Send us a textRepresentative Frank Tomaszewski of Fairbanks got his start in local politics opposing a plan by North Star Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins to build a parking lot near Frank's home. He ran for the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly in 2019 and served until 2022. He then ran against Luke Hopkins' son Grier Hopkins who was serving in the Alaska State House, and Frank defeated him. Frank and I were freshmen together in 2022, and now as we start are second terms together, we sit next to each other on the House floor.

If you store vegetables for any length of time, you're going to want to hear this interview with Sam Knapp of Offbeet Farm. Sam has practiced “storage farming” for years, growing during the summer for off-season sales from stored crops deep into the winter. In this interview, he tells us about how he figured out his own best practices along the way, as there was little available information on modern veg storage techniques that would keep produce in top shape over an extended period of time. The product of all this learning is Sam's brand-new book, Beyond the Root Cellar. It covers every aspect of storage farming, from which crops to grow for storage, to how to grow and harvest them, to what kind of a structure to build for long-term storage and the conditions that will keep vegetables fresh for as long as possible. We cover a lot of it in this interview, though for all the details, you can order Beyond the Root Cellar, which is now shipping from Growing for Market; magazine subscribers always get 20% off all books, including Beyond the Root Cellar. Journey with us up north to the “Golden Heart of Alaska” as we chat with Terrell Echols, General Manager of the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. As you can imagine, there are many differences and exciting challenges with running a venue in Alaska. Terrell tells us about the venue's place in the city and what they aim to provide. In addition to hosting touring events, the Carlson Center also serves as a community center, recreational skating rink, and even home to an indoor playground – which is great on short, cold, winter days, which at one point in the year is only two hours of daylight. Hear how Fairbanks, located in the Tanana Valley, between the hills and the Alaska Range, works closely with Anchorage to make routing shows more attractive to promoters, which is sometimes their biggest challenge. Terrell talks about his history, from growing up in Chicago to following different interests to ultimately getting into sports management at Columbia College. He tells us about his experience with community engagement and how his time working with students who had behavioral issues taught him so much about communication, the importance of listening to people, and how that experience has helped him in his work of making sure their venue is open for everyone, no matter their interests. Enjoy this informative, fun, episode that may inspire you to follow that interesting career opportunity to a new and exciting job.Terrell Echols: LinkedIn | EmailFNSB Carlson Center: Facebook

Episode 7: Aurora Borealis, Galileo coined the term "aurora borealis". aurora borealis comes from greek "aurora" meaning "sunrise," and "boreas" meaning "wind," the Greeks believed Aurora to be the sister of Helios and Selene. Helios was the sun. Selene was the moon. Other names include Northern lights, Southern lights, Rory, Ro, Orie, Dawn. Norther Lights can be seen at Grotta Lighthouse Iceland, Tromso Norway, Churchill Canada, Aurora Sky Station Sweden, Nuuk Greenland, Lapland northern Finland, Fairbanks Alaska. Southern lights can be seen at Eaglehawk Neck Australia, South Georgia Island, Cradle Mountain Australia, Stewart Island New Zealand, Ushuaia Argentina. Auroras occur when charged particles (electrons and protons) collide with gases in Earth's upper or lower atmosphere. Those collisions produce tiny flashes that fill the sky with colourful light. As billions of flashes occur in sequence, the auroras appear to move or " dance " in the sky. When the solar wind reaches Earth it sends a flurry of charged particles into Earth's magnetic field lines, towards the poles. The interaction of these particles with Earth's atmosphere can produce glowing aurora displays above polar regions as all these flashes occur in a sequence the scotts thought that merry dancers were dancing causing the lights. My favorite place to see aurora in fairbanks is creamers field it is quite dark but not as good as chena river. And if you go to fairbanks try and pick the day when the kp index is 4 or more this is so the aurora can be visible to the naked eye. Forecast and Webcam link for Alaska - https://www.gi.alaska.edu/monitors/aurora-forecast . Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, solar wind (charged particles flowing from the Sun) interacts with planetary magnetic fields to create auroras. On Mars and Venus, auroras come from solar wind interacting with the atmosphere. The aurora in the sky have occurred since the dawn of our planet. Dinosaurs walked under them, just as we do today.

Too many people speed through Fairbanks, Alaska. But there's much to reward travelers who spend a little time here.
Dianne and Jennie are joined by special guest Janet Richardson from Fairbanks, Alaska who shares stories of those buried in Fairbanks's first cemetery and shares many of the details of the years of restoration and preservation that has kept this cemetery alive. Clay Street Cemetery, formerly called the Fairbanks Cemetery, was established in 1903, the same year the city of Fairbanks was established on the banks of the Chena River. Here are buried people from all walks of life from local Native Americans to the first pioneers who came from all over the world to the Fairbanks area, most seeking their fortune in gold. In 1982, the cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and The Clay Street Cemetery Commission was formed. The commission has spent countless hours researching every Ordinary Extraordinary individual buried here and making sure their stories are not forgotten by engraving them on beautiful granite headstones often provided by members/businesses of the Fairbanks community. For more information on Fairbanks history and The Clay Street Cemetery, visit: https://www.fairbanksgenealogicalsociety.com/To help support Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York with your $5 donation click here: https://gofund.me/062c87d8To watch the video of our adaptation of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, click here: https://youtu.be/uWaWbg4C82s

This week on Minnesota Native News, the Line Three protest comes to the capitol and – New Native Theater takes its new show to the street. I'm Marie Rock.MARIE Story 1If you drove past the state capitol this week, you saw lots of state patrol – and you couldn't miss the teepees occupying capitol grounds. Laurie Stern explains:Laurie: Enbridge's Line 3 is almost complete, yet, if anything, opposition to it keeps mounting. This week indigenous-led environmental groups held ceremonies of prayer and protest at the state capitol. One of the organizers is Simone Senogles, a Red Laker with The Indigenous Environmental Network.SG: it's crazy to embrace an fossil fuel project of this magnitude, you know, the largest fossil fuel project that this company Enbridge has ever undertaken, in the time when really, we should be phasing out fossil fuels. And I think that we're at this kind of moment in time where we have to make the decision for life or for death. And the fossil fuel industry needs to go and I feel like it's on its last legs. But just like an abuser who finally knows it's their time to go, you know, that's when they're the most dangerous.Laurie: Another organizer is a new coalition called including RISE - Resilient Indigenous Sisters Engaging. Dawn Goodwin from White Earth is a founding member of RISE. She's been a water protector since she was a young girl.I went to my dad and said, Dad, what are we going to do if the water gets poisoned? And he said, Don't worry, my girl. There's the Clean Water Act. So I just went forward thinking, yep, it's going to be protected.Laurie: Dawn Goodwin lives on Lower Rice Lake in Clearwater County, which officials say is experiencing exceptional drought this summer. Goodwin says the lake is so dry it looks like a field. In her experience, The Clean Water Act has not been enough. State regulation has not been enough. And that all goes back to treaty rights that were supposedly enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. And so like one of my grandma's said that these treaties have been ignored for so long, that people think it's okay. But it's not. It's not okay. Laurie: Goodwin and the others are here to make a stand. Against the new pipeline. In favor of a more sustainable path. FOR MNN I'm Laurie Stern.Because if we can be honored, and have our treaties upheld, we can have a say about how things go forward. So that we can protect all that we have left, the little bit of natural environment that we have left. Marie: Also this week - New Native Theater is getting ready to perform for a live audience. It will be the first time since the pandemic, and performances will be outdoors. Diego Luke reports: Here's Laurie Stern again:New Native Theater has been practicing over Zoom most of the summer, but now actors directors and crew are rehearsing in person at the Gremlin Theater in Saint Paul.[hi scene]The play is called The Unplugging, based on the bestselling book “Two Old Women” by Alabascan author Velma Wallis, who lives near Fairbanks Alaska. The Unplugging takes place after the apocalypse. Two old women are exiled from their village but learn to survive by traditional ways. Then they meet a stranger from the village that rejected them. YN: It's sadly still as relevant as it was when I wrote it 10 years ago, when I was worried about what happens if the lights go out. This is playwright Yvette Nolan from the Gitigan Zibi Algonquin First Nation. And so they have to make a decision about whether they want to be part of a society. And so the scene you saw, the scene that we were that we were doing when you guys arrived was about the arrival of the outside world to their life.Scene excerptActor Christina Woods from the Bois Forte Band, plays one of the old women. There's a number of moments in the play that choke me up. One is when we're talking about community, and when we think about the historical impact of government, on our tribal communities, it's, it's rough, it's hard.Christina Woods is a first-time actor, but she has long experience in the arts. She is executive director of the Duluth Art Institute.I'm the first Anishinabe to be in this leadership role. And it makes a really big difference to come in with a lens that can see the absent narratives.Telling those missing stories is the purpose of New Native Theater, which is one of just a handful of indigenous-led theater companies in North America.CW: The main impact is having people that look like us on stage, and you'll see a lot of people in the audience who look like us on stage. Another impact is having space to really enjoy our unique native humor that you're not going to get in other places.Unplugging tickets are pay-what-you-can, with a suggested donation of $35. The play will be performed at the former Migizi Communications & Gandhi Mahal Site 27th Ave South and Lake Street at 2pm from Sept 2 through Sept. 19. For more information visit newnativetheatre.org. The title says it all. My life odyssey brought me from being a nature boy working on a tree farm in small-town Minnesota all the way to playing with my own forest in Fairbanks Alaska. I've never stopped being obsessed with trees. One day at work, somewhere about 27,000 feet above the Alaska range mountains, I learned that my co-worker created something amazing that embraces the service trees give to the earth. Listen along and learn about the organization Green Stand and how they are changing the paradigm of how we are using trees to care for the earth. My husband and I lived near the small quaint town of North Pole Alaska while serving at Ft. Wainwright Army Base in Fairbanks Alaska. The North Pole has a population of just over 2000 people. With street names like Kris Kringle Drive and Mistletoe Lane, It's known for its year-round Christmas decorations, including candy cane–striped street lights. The Santa Claus House in the North Pole is a Christmas store with walls covered in children’s letters to Santa. In the early days of Christmas letters, it was Santa who wrote to the children, but soon kids starting writing back, placing their letters on the fireplace smoodging Santa to bring them gifts. Now, the North Pole receives so many letters to Santa from children, they can hardly keep up. Sounds to me like they could use a wayzgoose after Christmas. Wayzgoose is a term for a printer’s holiday!

Kevin Lambert currently works as the Program Development Administrator for NEADS, World Class Service Dogs. He was the first veteran NEADS provided a dog to for PTSD in 2009. Previous to his current role, Kevin worked as the Director of Special Populations Programs and Services for the MA Department of Veterans' Services. Kevin is a combat veteran from the United States Army Infantry. He served with the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team out of Fairbanks Alaska and spent 16 months in IRAQ from August 2005-December 2006. Kevin Lambert- Extended Experience Kevin joined the United States Army and served from December 2004- December 2007. He was based out of Fairbanks, Alaska and was infantry out of the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Kevin was a despondent machine gunner and served in Mosul, Iraq August 2005-2006. They were then extended the day the were to fly home to Baghdad as the initial surge from August 2006-December 2006. “Some of our guys and girls were already back home in Alaska. Some were in Kuwait, my company was one of the last with boots on the ground and that night or early the next morning set to fly out. It was one of the rumors we never heard that we were getting extended so it was quite the shock.” – Kevin Lambert Transitioning Cultures When Kevin returned home from war, they discovered that he had fractured his L-4 bilaterally in his spine so his service quickly came to an end. He had just reenlisted for 4 years and no intentions of leaving the Army. Kevin was able to transition into a veteran program that understood the military culture and the needs as veterans come home from war. “I was very fortunate that I was coming back to Massachusetts, I had previously connected with our Secretary of Veteran Services in the state who was a Medal of Honor recipient from Vietnam, Thomas Kelly. Through our connection as I was getting out he encouraged me to apply for a job in one of the new programs the department was forming to help prevent suicide and getting a job like that was crucial to my transition.” – Kevin Lambert NEADS World Class Dogs Kevin was working for the MA Department of Veteran Services and through some of his outreach he had met with staff at NEADS. It was one of the first organizations to provide service dogs at Walter Reid for some of the physically disabled and hearing impaired disabled veterans. NEADS wanted to create a program for veterans returning from war with PTSD. “They were training dogs to assist veteran with the PTSD symptoms; I was fortunate enough that they said if I wanted to participate in their research program we’d be happy to have you. It was the right time, right place, said yes to the right thing. I ended up accepting the first dog that they gave to a veteran during the research program in July 2009.” – Kevin Lambert To hear more from Kevin Lambert and how NEADS serves our military community with PTSD, download this episode. There, during cold and dark winter days, Ruth searched for an interesting practice that would bring her joy. Ruth found it in the ceramic department of the University of Fairbanks Alaska. The ancient art of ceramics found a warm place in her heart. Currently Ruth resides in the southern desert in Israel, managing her own studio and teaching.
