Catherine Engberg was in town from the Bay Area, and I was so happy to be able to grab some of her time for the podcast! Catherine and I took lots of Zoom classes together from Broadway Dance Center during the pandemic. (The New York time zone was perfect for us Californians to take class before work!) But now we're both back to in-person dancing, and Catherine shares what it's like juggling dance with being an attorney! She grew up doing musical theater but eventually got busy with college and starting a family. But once her kids were more self-sufficient, she remembered how much she loved dance, so she started exploring it again. Her favorite styles are hip hop and jazz funk, and she's recently started her ballet journey as well. Catherine enjoys her dance vacations in LA and New York, and it was so much fun taking ballet with her at Westside in Santa Monica.

Jam Fam, we are so excited to welcome back Matthew Shaffer to the show! Catch up on what's new with Matthew, his new work and life after graduate school. Thank you Matthew, for sharing your time and story with us once again! You may already know interdisciplinary artist, educator, and advocate Matthew Shaffer from his television work on the top Netflix original series Wet Hot American Summer, or from his notable advice on Dance Moms, or perhaps you recognize him from his short-lived role as a Pottery Barn sales associate. Matthew's debut book So You Want To Be A Dancer launched as an Amazon #1 New Release in Performing Arts and continues to dominate the charts. His second book, Dancing Out of the Closet––a collection of creative nonfiction essays––is “One of the most delightful and insightful reads in the last few years . . . “ –CNN contributor Dr. Paul HokemeyerAfter attending the prestigious Orange County School of the Arts, Matthew continued his professional career as a principal dancer for the world-renowned company, Giordano Dance Chicago. Highlighted credits include Cold Case, Jackass Number Two, The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, Hansel & Gretel at The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Earth to America with Jason Alexander, Broadway Cares with Rosie O'Donnell, Disney XD's Kickin' It, Bunheads, he appears alongside Adam Levine on Broad City, and on the hit show Crazy Ex Girlfriend. In 2010, Matthew co-founded A Group Production, serving as executive producer and collaborating on over 40 projects between Broadway, Film, and Television. On the heels of a global pandemic, Matthew returned to graduate school to earn his Master of Fine Arts in directing and choreography from Wilson College. There, Matthew turned his attention to exploring gender, identity, and grief related to narratives in theater and commercial art. Whether directing and choreographing Matilda the Musical with a half-million dollar budget or working with emerging artists in community theaters and festivals, Matthew fosters a creative environment to craft a story grounded in the idea that emotion is genderless, that we're all looking to connect and feel validated. Art should be an equitable and accessible space for all. For the past 20 years, Matthew has worked as a dance educator at leading performing arts conservatories and conventions across the United States and Europe including the Broadway Dance Center and Giordano Dance Center. He is currently an adjunct professor at Hussian College; In Studio, Los Angeles and on faculty with Fluid Dance Convention. We are joined with actor, director, producer & teacher & writer Marishka S. Phillips to have an awesome conversation on the craft of acting!Marishka S. Phillips was born into the entertainment business. Her mother, Sandra Reaves-Phillips is an award-winning actress, in addition to being a writer and a singer. Marishka grew up immersed in theater, film and television, so it was not surprising that she would follow in her mother's footsteps. Ms. Phillips had been honing her skills as a dancer, taking classes at Alvin Ailey School of Dance and Broadway Dance Center, and had begun performing at a very early age. She got her first major theatrical break at age 13 when she was cast for the European tour of RAISIN. This opportunity offered her a chance to explore the world and served as an important confidence builder. Her career path has been anything but traditional, though it started off that way. She landed on Broadway, cast as part of the ensemble, on the musical UPTOWN: IT'S HOT starring Maurice Hines, in which she also understudied for the female lead. She continued amassing credits on Brodway with roles in BUBBLIN' BROWN SUGAR, FAME: THE MUSICAL, THE WIZ and THE ME NOBODY KNOWS. On television, she had re-occurring roles in the last two seasons of THE COSBY SHOW spin-off – A DIFFERENT WORLD. When she was not traveling the world with a musical or as a backup singer with recording artists like Sean “P Diddy” Combs and Cece Winans, she was developing and fortifying other aspects of her talents. She never considered herself a one trick pony. Like her mother before her, she began writing and eventually set her eye on directing, but not before fate would bring her together with the multi-faceted Susan Batson, who among her many other talents, was a world-renown acting coach who worked with some of Hollywood's A-list celebrities. Though she did not abandon any of her other career goals, Ms. Batson did open up new possibilities which she embraced with the same passion that she has every chapter of her life's journey. Today, in addition to being known as a working actor, Marishka is also a writer and director whose credits continue to grow. Her short film, Melinda: The Movie starring Tony Award-winning performers, LaChanze and Lillias White won numerous awards on the short film circuit. Ms. Phillips directed the one woman play, DOWN TO EARTHA, written and starringDierdra McDowell, which was a tribute to the invincible entertainer/civil rights and social justice activist, Eartha Kitt.Coaching other actors has become a central part of Ms. Phillips career development. She has been an instrumental force in helping actors such as Kerry Washington (Scandal), Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth) and Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill) achieve some of their best performances, and has received credit for doing that, as a result, she has become a much in demand acting coach. (visit her on YouTube) The Marishka Method. She currently coaches Nafessa Williams (I Wanna Dance With Somebody), Taja V. Simpson (The Oval) Shaquita Smith (Wicked City) and many more. Do you like to dance? What are you doing on Saturday, May 21st in New York City? How would you like to participate in a free event that attracts over 10,000 dancers, live bands, DJs and over one hundred unique styles of dance and culture? I'm talking about live Tango, Salsa, Afro-Cuban Conga bands, floats, Dance Battles, a Soul Train Line and much more? If all of this sounds too good to be true, then listen to my interview with Jamila Holman, the Festival Production Lead for the 16th annual Dance Parade. During the interview, Jamila discusses in detail, what you can expect to experience when you attend this awesome event. This is the largest dance event in New York City, and the only event (to my knowledge), where you are given a ticket if you don't move your body! That's right, instead of a parking or speeding ticket, you will receive a ticket for not moving. So, if you're looking to tone up your body and lose weight, why not have fun while doing it at the 16th annual Dance Parade? Jamila Holman began her dance career in NYC in 2003 with renowned Jazz Choreographer Frank Hatchett. Jamila danced at Madison Square Garden for the New York Knicks and was chosen to perform in shows in China, with John Legend and Paul McCartney. Jamila began her training under Frank Hatchett's principal dancer Kim Norrington and was bolstered by choreographers at the Broadway Dance Center and Hunter College. Her training varies in styles from ballet, to jazz, tap, hip-hop and African. As a teacher she has assisted Frank Hatchett at conventions such as The Dance Teachers Summit, NADAA, with the New York Knicks Cheering for Children Organization and at New York City's most popular gyms such as Crunch and David Barton. Currently, Jamila tours arenas nationwide as a choreographer and back-up dancer with R&B star Lisa Lisa of Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam.

There is so much to write about today's guest that I have restarted this intro many times. You really just need to watch to hear and feel all the positive vibes yourself! Since first walking into his classroom at Broadway Dance Center here in NYC, I knew I would be a fan of Jim Cooney. He has an energy that is a rare mix of welcoming and energizing but also grounded and professional-- all of that at once. Beyond learning steps, he delves deep into your why, showing up for yourself, centering yourself, and so much more, while challenging his students with such a variety of styles of dance. While he is an incredible (and award-winning) choreographer and director, he goes further, with a strong business mindset and belief in the abilities of all those he encounters. He took these skills, as well as a clear passion for helping people strive toward their greatest potential, beyond the physical classroom/stage, creating Amplified Artists, a platform for artists with a mission to create abundance and a bountiful life. Jim tells me so much more about this platform, actionable tips regarding being clear on who you are, what you are presenting, the importance of keeping it simple, and that yes, we all absolutely should be embracing our unique, varied backgrounds. @JimCooney: jimcooney . me/blog Instagram & Twitter: @jimcooneynyc “Amplified Artists is a membership community for those working in the performing arts. The mission is to create abundance in the type of art you make, but more importantly, to build a bountiful life. We do this by integrating our artistry with our money and health, which streamlines our efforts and creates a bigger, more fulfilling impact.” Find out more at AmplifiedArtists . life We need all the good news we can get. This brings me to Some (More) Good News, featuring mini interviews with people following their passions, even if that means leaving behind a potentially more comfortable career path, and making people feel better along the way. (Shout-out to John Krasinski for inspiring this whole thing in the first place!) S(M)GN episodes released each Friday. Follow @positively_kate for more.
