Angela Robinson Whitehurst returns to the show to bring her Broadway experience to discussing Wicked and the translation from stage to screen. Dr. Gee and Angela discuss the timing of seeing race brought to the forefront of this version of Wicked, compared to when the stage musical was first a part of our culture. The power of fantasy and musical stories is that deep ideas about culture can be explored through an alternate version of our world. It allows us to see the realities of our world through a different lens. Angela also exposes the way that Black women were not allowed into the Alphoba role before the film version, but now that will be the standard as the significance of the character has been redefined by Blackness. They continue their conversation about Black voices and stories in Hollywood, including having to make representation happen for themselves. A native of Jacksonville, FL, Angela Robinson is best-known as The Ice Queen Veronica Harrington of Tyler Perry's The Haves and The Have Nots. For her work as Veronica she is the 2015 recipient of the Gracie Award (Best Female Actress – One to Watch). Angela has worked on Broadway, off Broadway and on stages throughout the US and abroad. Broadway productions include The Color Purple with Fantasia, Wonderful Town, Bells Are Ringing, and Play On! She has participated in National Tours of The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, and The Wizard of Oz with Eartha Kitt. Her television/film credits include Law & Order: SVU, Another Bed and several regional and national commercials. She is the Winner of an Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) award for her work as Shug Avery in The Color Purple, Angela has been nominated twice for a Black Theatre Alliance Award (The Color Purple, Dreamgirls), and for an Audelco Award (Radiant Baby). She is also a member of the Tony Award winning Broadway Inspirational Voices. In 2008 Angela and her husband Scott founded the WhiteRobin Group. Rob Acton is the Founder & CEO of Cause Strategy Partners. Through his firm's signature program BoardLead, Cause Strategy Partners has placed nearly 3,000 professionals in the United States and the United Kingdom on nonprofit boards, while training tens-of-thousands more in high-impact nonprofit board service. Rob is a recognized expert on nonprofit governance and leadership. He has nearly three decades of experience founding, leading, and scaling social good organizations as both a nonprofit chief executive and board leader. Rob currently chairs the Board of Directors of Broadway Inspirational Voices. His causes are second chances for formerly incarcerated individuals, nonprofit capacity building, and the performing arts. Rob's forthcoming book, Becoming a Causie: Champion Your Cause Through Nonprofit Board Leadership will be available for preorders on July 5th and is slated for release in early September. In this episode, we discuss: ● The personal—and professional—benefits of joining a nonprofit board ● What makes a great board member (and what makes a terrible board member) ● Why diverse representation on nonprofit boards matters Key Takeaways: ● Shifting The Conversation To Meaningful Action. “What causes do you support, and how do you support them?” This was a question Rob started asking people, instead of the standard “What do you do for a living.” It stopped people in their tracks. I love this question. In an age when so many people confuse liking an Instagram post with action, this question moves beyond what causes matter to you and into the world-changing realm of actions. With that in mind, I'd like to ask you: “What causes do you support, and how do you support them?” ● The Three T's of Board Commitment. Rob discussed the commitment expected of nonprofit board members, emphasizing the three T's: Time, Talent, and Treasure. Time involves dedicating 4-6 hours a month, manageable alongside a regular job. Talent means leveraging your professional skills to guide the nonprofit. Treasure is about financially supporting the cause, reinforcing your commitment. There's a psychological shift when you invest your own resources, and it feels disingenuous to ask others to donate if you haven't done so yourself. ● Setting Up for Success. Cause Strategy Partners provides a blueprint for success that all organizations can learn from. They emphasize three key components: high expectations, training, and accountability. High expectations mean clearly defining the job role and responsibilities from the start. Training ensures individuals acquire the necessary skills to excel. Accountability involves regular check-ins to track progress and ensure each person meets the established expectations. This structured approach sets new board members—and employees—up for success. Ever wondered about the profound significance behind some of your favorite Christmas hymns? Prepare to embark on a journey with us, your hosts Greg Thomas and Dorian Johnson, as we unearth the theological truths embedded in the beloved "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." We dive deep into its history, tracing its origins back to Charles Wesley in 1739 and its later transformation by George Whitfield. Along the way, we experience the wonderful arrangement by Samuel Tolbert and Greg Thomas. Greg takes us on a musical journey with full length versions of some great choir Christmas recordings and live performances that are sure to get you singing and clapping right where you are. We take a moment to recognize and experience those spontaneous occurrences in church worship services, particularly during Christmas services, that have left indelible marks on our hearts. We share a heartrending performance by the late Duanice Pace, whose music continues to reverberate even after her passing. Looking ahead, we are eager to delve into the unique singing style found in gospel music. So, come, join us in preserving the beautiful tradition of choir and corporate singing, one hymn at a time, one choir song selection at a time. We're excited for this journey and always welcome your thoughts and ideas for future episodes. Let the singing begin!Glory to the New Born King, Samuel Tolbert and Gregory L. Julie and Casey interview each other about the best and worst of the year that was, a different way into goals for 2023, and what they're excited about for the future. TOP TAKEAWAYS: What could change if you asked yourself this question: “What would make this (mood/task/day/moment/action) feel 5% better?” Small goals for the win! One of the most fundamental things we've leaned into and accepted this year is the need for a team — for community care, instead of just self-care. Emotions are necessary for communication — they are the crucial information that takes our experience of the world from a line drawing to full Technicolor. And we won't be debating that emotions are crucial and not something to be “eliminated” at work anymore. Casey Erin Clark is a voice, public speaking, and communication coach, performer, author, entrepreneur, podcast host, and leader in both the entertainment and business worlds. She is a fierce advocate for gender justice and spends her days speaking, teaching, and writing about the power of women's voices, while seizing fulfilling opportunities to perform on screen and stage. In 2014, Casey and Julie Fogh co-founded Vital Voice Training, a voice and speech coaching company on a mission to change the conversation about what leaders are “supposed” to sound like and empower everyone to own the power of their full vocal instrument and presence. Casey hails from the cornfields of southern Illinois (where she grew up singing with her family Von Trapp-style) and has a BFA in musical theater from Illinois Wesleyan University. She also coaches musical theater pros of all ages, is a member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA, performed at the 2013 Oscars with the Les Miserables movie cast, and sings with the Grammy-nominated and Tony-honored Broadway Inspirational Voices choir. Recommending books and breakfast restaurants is her love language. Will perform the Lafayette speed rap from Hamilton on demand. Julie Fogh is a voice coach and interpersonal communications specialist who works with actors and business leaders helping them navigate their individual tensions and blocks, revealing the personal power and unique and captivating humanity that exists in all of us. Through Vital Voice Training, Julie and her co-founder Casey Erin Clark blend the toolbox of the professional actor with their powerful frameworks for embracing one's authentic speaking voice to businesses, schools, and organizations all over the country. Julie was raised in Seattle and earned her BA in Theatre and Women Studies from University of Washington. She earned an MFA in acting from Northern Illinois University, a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum that engaged with the physical body, the emotional life, imagination, use of language, character construction, non-verbal communication and the truth of the moment. She has studied with the Moscow Art Theatre and University of Copenhagen and has studied Meisner Technique with Kathryn Gately, Michael Chekhov Technique with Deborah Robertson, and Movement and Period Style with Lloyd Williamson. She loves YA novels and her cranky rescue cat, Ashland.
Casey Erin Clark sang at the Tony Awards a few months ago: a dream come true for a Midwestern girl who grew up singing in church and starring in school musicals. But it may not have happened if she had landed the Broadway role that she thought was her ticket to the big-time. After earning a degree in fine arts, Casey came to New York City to try to make it on Broadway. After making her off-Broadway debut, she soon found success when she landed a role in the cast of the 25th anniversary national tour of Les Miserables. A few months after the tour ended, Casey was in final callbacks for the show's highly anticipated Broadway revival. It was the role she was made for; she could feel it. But she didn't get the part. And that's when Casey began to realize that she might just have another calling. Kate Chapman is a performer, writer, visual artist, teacher, and coach. Her Broadway performing credits include Mary Poppins, Les Misérables, Pajama Game, Sweet Smell of Success, Saturday Night Fever; also, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular (Mrs. Claus for 5 seasons), Shakespeare in the Park, Lincoln Center and countless others. A 24-year member of the Tony award-winning Broadway Inspirational Voices (BIV), Kate sings with BIV at many events each year, works with BIV's outreach programs at Covenant House and The Ronald McDonald House, and is the organization's copywriter. Kate holds a Bachelor of Music Education (Boston University), a Master of Arts in Health Arts and Sciences (Goddard College), and trained with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and Wayfinder Life Coach Training. Kate is an exuberant spirit who combines her Broadway talents with health and life coach training to help people explore play and make them feel better. We had a very fun conversation that sometimes wanders into different directions! We speak at length about Kate Chapman's Broadway career and the physical expectations placed on her throughout, whether or not those expectations kept her healthy (spoiler alert: they didn't). However, because of her Broadway career, Kate was invited to be a part of Broadway Inspirational Voices in her late 20s, discovering gospel music and becoming involved in BIV's outreach programs that use music to support and inspire homeless and runaway youth, as well as sick children and their families. Kate found Goddard after training with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). She studied the self-healing model, medical anthropology (“how did we get to…a very harsh medical system that deals with quieting symptoms and not causal issues?”), and how talk shows are created. Kate wrote A Pixie's Prescription: A Fun Toolkit for a Feel Better Life, available now on Amazon. Her friend told her “it's a wonderful toilet read.” In the book, Kate explores aspects of her life that she tries to keep at the forefront that make her feel better (such as curiosity, play, relationships, home environment, health, exercise, education). She illustrates each aspect with an anecdote from her life, such as learning play from Marvin Hamlisch (composer of A Chorus Line, Sweet Smell of Success). Julie chats with Casey Erin Clark (her co-founder) about her winding path from “small town girl trying to make it in Broadway” perfectionist to multi-hyphenate rebel. Along the way, they cover the profound joy of using your voice, embracing your edges, seeing possibility all around you, and finding your “I want” song. Thank you to our Season 3 sponsor, Armoire! For 50% off your first month's rental + a free item, go to http://armoire.style/voiceis and use VOICEIS in the referral box! TOP TAKEAWAYS Casey was born a classic people-pleasing perfectionist. It took her years, a few serious bumps in the road, and one devastating election to finally clarify what was really important. (Hint: the answer was not “what other people think.”) Articulating what you want is powerful. An “I want” song in musical theater tells us about the character's desires and ambitions and needs…and spending your life and career exploring this kind of material is awfully helpful when you need to express your own wants. (Try finding your own “I want” song!) Every human being contains infinite possibility and potential—seeing more in ourselves and each other requires self-exploration, curiosity, a supportive community, and a willingness to see what's beyond the surface. Long time no see. Can you believe it's already October and the holidays are right around the corner? Literally. And I think we're all still waiting to see what it's going to be like this year as we begin peeking out from behind this life-altering global pandemic. I know one of the traditions my family missed out on last year was an in-person holiday handbell concert by the Raleigh Ringers. It wasn't safe and like most arts organizations, they took their performance to cyberspace. This pandemic has really turned the way we experience life upside down, and I truly believe that one of the hardest hit subsectors in the nonprofit world is arts & culture. And yet, the sector rose to the occasion as it provided us with virtual concerts we'd otherwise never been able to attend (Third Coast Baroque and Broadway Inspirational Voices, I'm talking to you!), virtual gatherings to create and reflect on beauty, and so much more. My guest today is Dionne Powlenzuk, the Executive Director of the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington in Bowmanville, Ontario Canada. We recorded this podcast earlier this year before adding video, so ironic as it is, we only have audio for this interview. So… could you imagine how to run a public art gallery during a pandemic? Like how can you even? How do you continue serving your community when everything is on lockdown? Or not? Or again? The fact is: Even though we are finally seeing the light at the end of the Covid tunnel, this pandemic has hit the arts sector the hardest of all. And yet, I cannot fathom how we would have survived this pandemic without leaders like Dionne who took what was primarily an in-person only experience and moved it online and outdoors so we could learn and refresh our spirits during one of the darkest times in our lifetime!. In this interview, Dionne and I talk about how she started volunteering at the organization she now leads, and what that journey has been like. We also explore the various ways the pandemic has changed the way we experience the arts, and how her local gallery has not only expanded their audience, they've also grown the pool of artists they support—with living wages—to include artists worldwide. So with no further adieu, allow me to introduce you to Dionne Powlenzuk, the Executive Director of the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington. https://yournonprofitlife.com/s2ep16-dionne-powlenzuk
This week's guest Michael McElroy is an actor, singer, musical director, educator, and founder of the Tony award-winning Broadway Inspirational Voices, the multi-racial gospel choir, 'united in changing lives through the power of music and service.'' In this shorter than normal interview, Michael explains how being immersed in the fusion of gospel music, musical theatre, and R&B as a child developed his love and appreciation of music. He also discusses how his Grandmother instilled in him a lifelong commitment to service and giving back. Although acutely aware of racism, Michael felt insulted; being surrounded by black excellence helped him develop a personal sense of limitless possibilities for anything if prepared to invest in the work. Michael discusses his journey through education, developing his sense of identity, and how he resolved to overcome the barriers he encountered, to reinforce his self-belief, and conviction to succeed. We discuss how serendipity played a pivotal part in landing his first Broadway role in Miss Saigon. Michael explains what led him to create the social impact organization, Broadway Inspirational Voices, to create an impact and welcoming space that has evolved over 25 years to become a platform where artists change lives through the power of music. Michael also discusses how he and his fellow artists responded to the pandemic's lockdown and the murders of George Floyd and other victims of race crimes by creating virtual outreach programs for Broadway inspirational Voices and Covenant House. Michael discusses how Broadway has been responding to the last eighteen months, addressing its institutional inequities to become more inclusive, diverse, and accessible by embracing New Deal proposed through Musicians United For Social Equity and Black Theatre United. Finally, Michael describes the steps he is taking to empower faculty and students in DE&I and create systemic change through his new role as Chair at the University of Michigan's Department of Musical Theatre. This week's storytellers are broadway actor and singer Kimberly JaJuan, broadway actor E Clayton Cornelious, magician Ran'D Shine, and broadway actor Stanley Wayne Mathis. This week, in observance of Juneteenth coming up this Saturday, I'm featuring stories all from Black entertainers. If you're unaware of what Juneteenth is, having only glanced past it as a seemingly obscure holiday on your calender, Juneteenth, observed on June 19th is a day in which we celebrate the day that the slaves in Texas found out that the Emancipation Proclimation was happening. In short, it declared that "all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free." Although that happened in 1863, 158 years ago, Black people today unfortunately are still facing challenges of equality. It may or may not come as a surprise that these challenges also crop up for those in the entertainment industry as well. It's my goal this episode to shine light on some of these challenges to bring awareness and inspire change because this is something that needs to be addressed, not just by those experiencing it, but by all people. Kimberly JaJuan The first story is told by Kimberly JaJuan, a singer and actor both on and off Broadway. She's a graduate of The Eastman School and of Julliard School earning both Bachelor's and Masters Degrees. Some of her more notable (and favorite) roles have been Singing with Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick, Jr. at the Papal visit at Madison Square Garden, portraying the role of Sarah in RAGTIME on Broadway, and creating the role of Lisette alongside classmate Audra McDonald in MARIE CHRISTINE. She's also a broadway investor debuting as an Associate Producer on productions like American Son, Ain't Too Proud, and Hadestown to name a few. Here she is talking about a time she had to be judicious with her words in regards to cultural differences having been asked for her thoughts on a scene being rehearsed. E Clayton Cornelious The second story is by E Clayton Cornelious, a 22 year broadway veteran with credits including The Caterpillar in Wonderland, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Scottsboro Boys, and A Chorus Line. Add to this, a number of National Tour credits that include Kinky Boots, Sister Act, Jersey Boys, and Dirty Dancing. In addition to his countless theater credits, he's a broadway investor and producer as well as a member of the Broadway Inspirational Voices. He's also a recent recipient of the, "Legacy Robe" for his role in the Broadway hit, Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. Here's E Clayton telling about a time he didn't land a role because he didn't fit the picture of what they were looking for. Here's where you can find out more about E Clayton: E Clayton's Website: https://www.eclaycorn.com Ran'D Shine The third story is my magician Ran'D Shine, the face of the new millennium magician who's magic has taken him around the world from Cape Town South Africa performing his one-man show, "Mysterious Ways," to Presidential Inauguration banquets at the White House. He is one of the most sought after magicians on the college circuit, and has been featured at Hollywood's 'Magic Castle' as well as 'Monday Night Magic', New York's longest running Off-Broadway magic show. Here's Ran'D talking about a time he was mistaken for waitstaff at a networking event and then questioned as if he didn't belong there. Here's where you can find out more about Ran'D: Ran'D's Website: https://www.randyshine.com Stanley Wayne Mathis The final story is told by Stanley Wayne Mathis, a broadway veteran who made his debut in 1990 in the revival of Oh, Kay!. His other credits include The Book of Mormon and the original casts of Jelly's Last Jam, The Lion King and Nice Work If You Can Get It, as well as revivals of Wonderful Town, Kiss Me, Kate and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Welcome back to BeREAL! This week, Diana and Ednesha are joined by Diana's good friend, Michael Lee Scott. Michael is here today to discuss Pride month 2021 and Broadway Cares: Equity Fights AIDS. Michael starts off the episode by telling the story of how he and Diana met. He then tells of many experiences the two have shared together throughout the years, until he changes to conversation to talk about how he got into the arts. He traces back his creativity to his parents, and tells of how they encouraged his artistic endeavors. These kept with him throughout his career when he ventured into musical theatre. Next, he talks about his career in recent years and his interpretation of the creative process. He highlights why it is important for artists to carry through with their work. He explains that even though in the middle of a project, you might think it looks terrible, it will come together in the end. Before the break, Michael tells one more of his favorite stories as Diana can't emphasize enough how good of a storyteller he is. After the break, the trio return to discuss Pride Month 2021. Diana and Michael tell the story of them attending the first pride parade in NYC together. Michael then delves into Broadway Cares: Equity Fights AIDS. He retells how the organization came to be. The Broadway Bares event started as a biannual go-go dance night. These nights used to bring in around $8,000 a night. Since then, the organization has grown, and last year the event brought in over $2 million in one night. Lastly, Michael talks about his work with Broadway Cares: Equity Fights AIDS now. He has since retired from being a performer and now works as a choreographer. BeREAL's very own Jessica chimes in to talk about her experience with the show, since she joined as a performer in 2014. She has also created standalone pieces for The NYC Gay Men's Chorus, Broadway Inspirational Voices, and Wicked's 16th Anniversary Commemoration and music directed the Michael R Jackson's A Strange Loop. Billy Recce is a MAC award-winner, and a recipient of the York Theatre Company's NEO Award. Special Episode #2: I'm so thrilled to be joined today by the uber-talented and outrageously foxy Michael McElroy. You probably remember his stand-out, Tony-nominated performance as Jim in the Deaf West/Roundabout revival of Big River a few seasons ago. Or perhaps you have been enjoying his fantastic performances on the original cast recordings of Michael John LaChiusa's The Wild Party or Violet or Blue or Tommy. Or maybe you watched him in the Chenoweth/Lupone Candide telecast (with Yours Truly). Or maybe you're a fan of The Broadway Inspirational Voices, the gospel choir that he founded and directs. Or maybe you heard his killer gospel arrangement of Sondheim's "Sunday" for Billy Porter's CD, At the Corner of Broadway and Soul. Or maybe you just like checking out pictures of his cute self. No matter how you slice it, he comes up delicious and nutricious. For this second special episode, I'm breaking tradition. Instead of a performance recorded live at my piano, I'm using a recording from a concert of my music presented at Birdland on November 20th, 2006. The song, "Vonce," like "Man in the Moon," is a spec song I wrote this past summer to audition to be the composer/lyricist of a new musical. (I'm currently working on that show, although I'm still not at liberty to discuss it freely.) It's unlikely that this song will end up in the show, but I wanted to share it with you all, because Michael sings it so beautifully. As it is a jazz tune, I felt that this concert recording with band was a much better way to present the song. Michael and I got amazing support that night from Todd Groves on sax, Peter Donovan on bass, and Sean McDaniel on drums. (The interview with Michael was recorded 1/13/07.)Bonus video! My friend (and Freefall star) David Perlman was kind enough to videotape that Birdland concert for me, so you can also check out Michael singing the song on YouTube!
