This week on ‘The KOKO Match Review' the boys are up bright and early nursing sore heads and weary eyes to give you ‘ra ra' roundup like no other. We will fine-tooth comb our way through Bledisloe two, where the All Blacks were pushed to the edge early by a brave and willing Wallabies team in windy Wellington. After getting off to a fast start this week the Wallabies mounted significant pressure, but when push came to shove, the points came a lot easier for the big brutal boys from the land of the long white cloud. The papers and social clips will read that the Wallabies went down two to nil in the Bledisloe Cup, but it is clear to the naked eye that our ‘Gangsters of Gold' are putting in a ‘Schmidt' tonne effort and are progressing nicely. With the TRC on the line it would be reckless of The KOKO Crew not to address the neat little treat in Nelspruit between the Springboks and Pumas. Although the Pumas had a snowflake's chance in hell to hold the TRC title in their sassy South American hands, it was the banging Boks in the end that got up really big for Eben Etzebeth in his record breaking match. The ‘Green Goblins' of gritty rugby proved way too strong at home for the pedestrian Pumas, claiming their much deserved place at the tippy top of The Rugby Championship. So if you are rising slowly this fine morning muttering the words “Sundays are for Swoop” then throw on your coziest crotchless pants and listen to our dulcet tones to get you really hot and heavy. Our 'To The Last Drop' hosts agree the Springboks have much to atone in this Saturday's Rugby Championship decider against Argentina in Nelspruit. They fell agonisingly short in rural Argentina last weekend but our hosts concur that defeat cannot be placed at the door of just one player. Besides, apart from missing one kick Manie Libbok actually had a decent Test in Santiago del Estero. Later in the episode former Blitzboks flyer Marius Schoeman tells Brenden and Liam about his transition from Sevens High Performance manager at SA Rugby to CEO of the SA Rugby Legends. Apart from being a decorated Sevens player himself, Schoeman in concert with Neil Powell, has been instrumental in identifying and developing the talents of Kwagga Smith, Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Co.
The Bokke let one slip in Argentina as Los Pumas have now toppled all three of their Southern rivals to line up a final in Nelspruit. We take a delve into where the Bokke went wrong, whilst also looking ahead to the final round of the Rugby Championship. The Wallabies came close, can they come a little closer? Just where will the log tally-up come Saturday night.
This week in the ‘KOKO Match Review' the boys peel back the layers on the All Blacks Bledisloe Cup victory in Sydney and they also have a little gander at top of the TRC tussle between Argentina and the Springboks. In James Slipper's record breaking 140th cap for his country, it was the men from the land of the long white cloud that started fast against the wasteful Wallabies, stacking on the 21 unanswered in the first 15 minutes. Despite a brave and gutsy comeback from our ‘Gladiators in Gold' in the second half, the early All Black rampage had us Aussies pushing ‘Schmidt' uphill. It might be another ‘L' in the results column for the Wallabies, but the KOKO Crew discuss at length the strengths and pitfalls of this young Aussie side heading into game two in Wellington. The fellas also find a morsel time to touch on the ‘Big Boy' bout between Argentina and South Africa. In a match where the stakes were sky high for both sides in relation to their TRC title hopes, but it was the punishing Pumas that went full alpha and said “hold my Malbec”, as they tightened up the TRC race heading into the final round in Nelspruit. With the Bled locked up at Razor's ranch and the TRC crown still up for grabs, it is time for the men of KOKO to bathe in the delicacies and nuances of our beautiful game, please enjoy another dose of the ‘KOKO Match Review'. The moon hung low over the dense canopy of trees, casting an eerie silver glow across the quiet expanse of wilderness. Deep within the heart of Nelspruit, where the echoes of civilization faded into nothingness, a sense of unease festered in the stillness. The air was thick, almost oppressive, as if the forest itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

Batteries are fast becoming the core of modern energy systems and more sustainable economies, underpinning the implementation of smart grids and minigrids, while fostering the rollout of renewable energy and e-mobility, and yet, South Africa's involvement in the battery value chain remains limited. Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies chief economist Gaylor Montmasson-Clair questions whether South Africa will be an importer of batteries only, or if it will manage to become a part of the value chain. He explains that lithium-ion battery (LIB) cells consist largely of four components: a cathode that determines capacity and average voltage of a battery; the anode that comprises the negative electrode; an electrolyte solution; and a separator, which determines the safety of a battery, preventing short circuiting and overheating. In turn, there are six types of LIBs – lithium/nickel/cobalt/aluminium, lithium/manganese oxide, lithium iron phosphate and lithium/nickel/manganese/cobalt. Montmasson-Clair says South African stakeholders need to understand where niche markets lie in this regard. China currently dominates LIB production, while there are also some production facilities in the US and European markets. The market has, therefore, already been captured by a few key players, including Panasonic, CATL and LG Chem; however, South Africa can still get involved in the battery value chain, he says. He believes South Africa has the relevant skills and expertise in mineral beneficiation, with entities such as minerals specialist Mintek and with battery-related manufacturing companies, as well as an endowment of some of the minerals used in LIBS, such as manganese. Montmasson-Clair mentions that neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe have lithium, which South Africa can leverage. If South Africa gets serious about cell manufacturing, it can access copper from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or Zambia, cobalt from the DRC and Madagascar, graphite from Mozambique, Tanzania or Madagascar, nickel from Zimbabwe and Botswana and phosphate rock from Morocco, Algeria or Egypt. As it stands, South Africa only beneficiates manganese and aluminium to battery grade, while nickel and lithium beneficiation is in the pipeline. Montmasson-Clair points out that Manganese Metal Company, in Nelspruit, is the only company in the world, outside of China, that refines manganese to battery grade. The company produces about 28 000 t/y of electrolytic manganese metal for use in high-purity manganese sulphate, and in cathode. While Montmasson-Clair is confident that South Africa has the industrial capacity and know-how to manufacture LIB cells, but says there is but one pilot plant for this in the Western Cape. South African company Metair produces battery cells, but does so in Turkey and Romania, owing to it being more economically viable than producing these in South Africa. Some companies such as AutoX and MegaMillion aim to develop cell manufacturing capability in the country, but it remains to be seen if these plans will proceed. Moreover, Montmasson-Clair explains that battery manufacturing based on imported cells, since cell manufacturing is more costly to start up, is a more vibrant prospect in the country. He confirms that numerous firms have developed intellectual property and expertise in the manufacturing of specific component parts of batteries, such as casing, and in the assembly of battery packs. In some cases, companies have used this expertise to develop additional offerings, such as specialised vehicles. “Perhaps these companies can tap into cell manufacturing,” he suggests. Looking at battery recycling, Montmasson-Clair says South Africa has companies involved in marketing second-life batteries on the local market and that only a few facilities globally are in a position to effectively recycle LIBs. Montmasson-Clair explains that South Africa may not be able to compete with leading firms in terms of cell manufacturing and may als...

While much of the rugby world's attention will be focused on events in Nelspruit, South Africa tomorrow morning, the clash between the Pumas and Wallabies in Mendoza holds plenty of interest in it's own right. Two evenly matched sides who will most likely be meeting each other in the knockout stages of next year's World Cup go head to head, with improvements aplenty needed from two teams definitely not short on talent.
Host Carl Lewis is joined by coach Dave Wessels and journalist Simnikiwe Xabanisa as they preview the heavyweight clash between the Springboks and the All Blacks. They also touch on Argentina v Australia, The Women Springboks and the Blitzboks winning gold at the Commonwealth Games. The All Blacks will be desperate to bounce back and prove their critics wrong when they go behind enemy lines to face world champions South Africa on Saturday. New Zealand clash with the Springboks at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, then Johannesburg seven days later, in the opening rounds of the 2022 Rugby Championship. The All Blacks have faced a barrage of criticism from pundits and fans in New Zealand since the humbling 2-1 home series defeat to Ireland. They have now lost four of their last five games. New Zealand's forwards must front up to the notoriously physical Springboks pack, but centre Rieko Ioane said the backs must also assert themselves.

An analysis of public infrastructure delivery in South Africa, prepared for consideration by the National Planning Commission (NPC), identifies the quality of procurement and client-delivery management as the main differentiators between those projects that have succeeded in recent years and those that have failed. Prepared by engineers Dr Ron Watermeyer and Dr Sean Phillips the analysis shows that, when a public-sector client adopts a strategic, rather than an administrative, stance to the design, procurement and implementation of infrastructure projects, value for money is typically secured. By contrast, when no distinction is made between the procurement of infrastructure and the acquisition of general goods and services and when that procurement is led by finance departments rather than at an enterprise level, led by the CEO, projects tend to run over budget and behind schedule. In their paper, the authors juxtapose several megaprojects, such as Eskom’s Medupi and Kusile, which have fallen short of original cost and schedule estimates, against two project-delivery success stories: the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and Strategic Integrated Project 14 (SIP 14), which involved the building of two new universities. Under the REIPPPP, government’s Independent Power Producer (IPP) Office oversaw the procurement, through seven bidding rounds, of 6 422 MW of renewables capacity, built by 112 IPPs at a cost of R209.7-billion. Under SIP 14, the Department of Higher Education and Training employed the University of the Witwatersrand as its implementation agent for the construction of new campuses in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga and Kimberley, in the Norther Cape. Facilities for the first intake of students were delivered within 28 months of a political decision being taken in 2011. The costs deviation was also modest, despite the project proceeding before many of the contracts had been priced. Phillips and Watermeyer tell Engineering News that, in the case of the REIPPPP, the quality of the procurement process run by the IPP Office resulted in the development of trust in the procurement process by developers and financiers. This, in turn, contributed to a marked reduction in the cost of renewable energy through successive bid rounds. Key strengths of the new universities project, meanwhile, arose from client governance and organisational ownership practices, which provided effective direction and oversight of the organisation’s infrastructure delivery programme. In both instances, there was also CEO-level client leadership, which helped ensure that a strategic and tactical approach was adopted throughout. “Value for money is realised when the value proposition that was set for the project at the time that a decision was taken to invest in a project is as far as possible realised,” the authors explain. For those megaprojects that ran well over budget and behind schedule the gap between what was intended and what was achieved is material: The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Programme cost R17.4-billion rather than the R11.4-billion initially estimated; The Gautrain budget increase from an original estimate of R6.8-billion to R25.2-billion; The capital cost of Transnet’s New Multi-Product Pipeline grew from an estimate of R12.7-billion to R30.4-billion; While Eskom’s Medupi and Kusile projects surged from initial estimates of R70-billion and R80-billion respectively to R208-billion-plus for Medupi and about R240-billion for Kusile. Most of these projects have also seriously lagged their original delivery schedules. In their paper, the authors highlight a direct linkage between the role played by the client, or the organisation initiating the project and playing the role of the client, and infrastructure project outcomes regardless of size, complexity and location. “The root cause of project failure or poor project outcomes can most often be attributed to a lack of...

After I left Pietermaritzburg, I went to St. Lucia – the hippo place of South Africa. There were signs everywhere saying that the hippos roam in the streets at night. The day after I joined a Hippo & Croc Boat Cruise in iSimangaliso Wetland Park just outside St Lucia, and I was picked up at the hostel and got into an open minibus with some of the others and our guide Ndu. It's a 2-hour boat tour, where they make a promise: “100 % Guaranteed Hippo Sightings or You're Money Back” And I guess it's a promise that isn't hard to keep as St Lucia is home to the largest free-roaming population of hippos in South Africa. Not only is it home to 800 hippos but also approximately 1000 Nile crocodiles not to mention the abundance of birdlife here in the Wetland Park. THE HIPPO IS A WEIRD ANIMAL Here are some interesting facts about hippos that you might not know. The name Hippopotamus comes from the Ancient Greek and means ‘river horse'. Hippos bask on the shoreline and secrete an oily red substance, which gave rise to the myth that they sweat blood. The liquid is actually a skin moistener and sunblock that may also provide protection against germs. An adult Hippo needs to resurface every 3 – 5mins to breathe. The process of surfacing and breathing is automatic, and even a hippo is sleeping underwater will rise and breathe without waking. Both reproduction and birth occur in the water. Hippo calves weigh approximately 45kg at birth and can suckle on land or underwater by closing their ears and nostrils. Each female has only one calf every two years. Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it can easily outrun most humans. Hippos have been clocked at 30 km/h over short distances. Hippos will travel on land for up to 10km to feed and spend four to five hours grazing and can consume 68 kg of grass each night. That might sound like a bit but considering their enormous size, their food intake is relatively low. The hippo is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world – and is often regarded as one of the most – if not THE most dangerous animal in Africa. But if they threatened on land they will most often run for water. We saw a lot of hippos and but no crocodiles… until the last few seconds of the trip. At the bank, we saw a huge Nile crocodile in the sun. I LOST RECORDINGS As I was continuing the second half of my road trip, I was still recording a ton every day, but then when I came to Johannesburg 10 days later something awful happened. As I travel around, I always carry a recorder and I record so much. Normally for one 30-minute episode, I might have 2 hours of recordings that I need to go through and decide what to put in each episode. And even though I'm only on halfway through my road trip – and also the last leg of my African adventures, this episode is … the season finale. Because I lost all the recordings, I did in the second half. I deleted all my recordings by accident. Long story how that happened. You have to listen to the episode to hear what happened. HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED ON THE LAST TEN DAYS IN AFRICA Let me tell you what happened after St. Lucia. First, I went to Swaziland – or 'the Kingdom of eSwatini' as it's called now. The king renamed the country shortly after my visit. Here I stayed at Sondzela Backpackers in Malkerns In Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. It's in the middle of a national park, and in the late afternoon, I went on a game drive into the wild. Here I saw a lot of animals and some stunning nature as the sun was setting. After that, we went back, where they were a wonderful cooking local meal over an open fire. MOZAMBIQUE From there I went to via Nelspruit to Komatipoort close to the Mozambique border and just south of Kruger National Park. I spent one day in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Here I couldn't drive, so I walked across the border and got into a small cramped minibus. In Maputo, I walked around the city, having coffee and lunch and getting a good sense of the local life there. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK And then, one of the highlights of my Africa trip: Two days in Kruger National Park. It's the flagship of South African National Parks and one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,485 km2 (7,523 sq mi) – or nearly 2 million hectares of land. It extends 360 km (220 mi) from north to south along the Mozambique border. And 65 km (40 mi) from east to west. It's larger than Israel. It's an almost indescribable wildlife experience – rated as the ultimate safari experience. Here are some of the numbers: Elephant: 13,750 Giraffe: 10,000 Hippo: 3,100 Impala: 175,000 Crocodile: 4,420 Leopard: 1,000 Lion: 17,000 Spotted hyena: 5,340 These numbers are from 2011 so they might have changed a bit. But there are a lot. ELEPHANT TOLD ME TO STAY WHERE I WAS One of my most interesting things was when I was driving in the park and a group of elephants were walking across. As one of the last the biggest male elephant, I've ever seen in real life appeared. He stopped right in front of my car and looked right at me. It was as he was saying: “You better stay right there. Because here comes the baby!” And then he walked on and two smaller female elephants came with the cutest little baby elephant. I don't think it was more than a few days old. It was one of those experiences where I had to pinch myself. Truly one for the memories. You can spend the night in the park in one of their guesthouses, but I chose to stay in Phalaborwa, just outside the park. And then I went back in there the next day. There was still so much more to see. JENSEN SAFARI I also wanted to visit Pretoria and ended up staying at the Jensen Safari Guesthouse. Here I met the owner Holger Jensen, a fellow Dane who moved down here in 1980 to start a safari business. He both does hunting trips and photo safaris. And then a wonderful little guest house. MANDELA'S HOUSE IN SOWETO My last stop on my road trip – and my Africa tour was Johannesburg. I spent my day in Soweto. In earlier years it was a rough township and now it's just a vibrant part of the city, with shops and restaurants. Also, I visited Mandela's House – a house on Orlando West in Soweto, where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962. Now it's a museum. As they say on their website, they strive to be a world-class visitor attraction and a leading centre for the preservation, presentation, and research of the historical heritage and Mandela Family legacy. It was really interesting to see where the place where this incredible man lived when he was a young man. END OF SEASON 4 And that's it for Africa. For this time… but since I've only been to 13 African nations, and there are 53 African UN Nations, I've only done 25% of them. So, I will be back. I promise you that I will be extra careful not to lose any recordings ever again. COMING UP In the next few weeks – while I work on episodes for the next season you will get some Flashback episodes. Like I did before this season, I've handpicked some of the older episodes from the archive, that you might never have heard. I'm also going to be dropping a few other bonus episodes. And then, I'm doing something crazy – something that's never been done before. That's all I'm going to say about that for now. You just got to stay subscribed and all this will be in your podcast app. SEASON 5 AND BEYOND I'm also looking forward to bringing you season 5 and we start by sailing from Spain to Greece, then heading up through Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia … and after that more USA, and a ton from South America. So, basically… we only just started. Thanks for staying with me and helping me spread the word about the Radio Vagabond. You're the best. See you. LETTER FROM A LISTENER Hey Palle Bo, Thank you for a fabulous show! You are a talented storyteller. I look forward to every episode. I'm a South African nomad waiting out COVID on the Garden route close to Tsitsikamma. I have so enjoyed your South African road trip driving up and down the N2 listening in. If you get a chance definitely go back to explore Lesotho, it's magical. Would love to grab a beer with you sometime if you ever back in this neck of the woods – and alcohol is back on sale. Take care, stay safe. Best wishes, Andrea Thank you so much. I'm glad you're enjoying the podcast. And since you're also a nomad we might bump into each other somewhere in the world… if not, I'm most likely coming back on the Garden Route and Tsitsikamma. It's one of the most beautiful places on the planet and I would love to spend much more time in that area. Even though, I'll be close to Bloukrans Bridge – and will have to do the Bungy Jump since I made a promise of doing that in episode 161. Andrea sent this by filling out the form on theradiovagabond.com/contact – and you could do the same. I always enjoy getting letters from listeners. It means the world to me hearing from you guys. You can also just send me an email on listener@theradiovagabond.com or send me a voicemail on WhatsApp on +4540105105.
– 5 min for at trække vejret. Her boede jeg på Sondzela Backpackers I Malkerns In Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. I hvert fald i denne omgang. BREV FRA EN LYTTER Hey Palle Bo, Tak for et fantastisk show! Episode 6 finds our hosts TeethSwag and Ndarkie yet again completely outclassed on the microphone as they’re joined by another caliber of guest beyond their intellectual pay-grade. Today we're joined by Nelspruit born Dineo Tsamela who leads a new wave of young and tech savvy South African financial industry professionals who are making it their business to educate and inform the African masses about better ways of managing their money. The self-confessed bookworm is no stranger to debt herself since early in her career she found herself overwhelmed with debt and no real plan as to how to get herself out of the financial distress that most young people seem to find themselves in. So she did what any young lady in her early twenties would do – moved to Joburg and took a four year break from all social activities, cutting down her spending to her most basic living expenses and proceeded to kick life’s financially draining butt. The best thing of all? She survived and lived to share her tail of survival with hippies all around the world!. Now far removed from the earlier stresses that slowed her down earlier on in her career, today Dineo finds herself professionally stationed as a Communication Manager of Global Markets in the banking sector as well operating as a sort-after media speaker, columnist and panelist on all matters relating to money and investing in South Africa. In between founding her labour of love financial literacy blog Piggy Banker, freelancing for City Press and The Sunday Times as a business columnist and authoring her own ebook “A Step-by-Step Guide to Paying off Your Debt”, Dineo also somehow finds time to be a mom and an avid traveler. In the next hour and a half, TeethSwag and Ndarkie attempt their first fully sober episode as they deep dive into her life journey so far, her love and passion for the arts as well as some critical pointers she gives our hosts on how to move from being in debt to being a smarter investor on a hippies budget. This is episode 56 and there are movements afoot. For instance, Transvaal President Paul Kruger is on his way to Europe on a diplomatic mission, Free State President Styen is moving through the Northern Transvaal, and General Louis Botha is harassing Canadian, Australian, and English troops stationed along the all important railway line between Pretoria and Delagoa Bay. Also moving through the veld are Generals Christiaan de Wet and Koos de La Rey. The former has made his way back into his beloved Free State, while the latter is making life difficult for the English across a broad swathe of the Transvaal. Steyn and the rest of the Free State government were returning to battle in the Free State after the all important meeting with Kruger in Nelspruit where it was decided to go ahead with the guerrilla campaign. The British, meanwhile, are considering winding down their forces in South Africa, with their commander in chief Lord Roberts planning his trip back home. The Boers have arranged a second major meeting of generals and government officials at Cyferfontein, a farm around 100 kilometres west of the gold ming city of Johannesburg set for October 25th. Steyn was en route here on his circuitous ride home, so too de le Rey and de Wet, while Botha would also rendezvous with these erstwhile Boer commanders. More about that gathering in coming podcasts. Lord Roberts has setup his army across South Africa to act more like police than soldiers. He believed the bandits, as he called these small groups of roaming Boers, would eventually surrender as long as their logistics could be smashed. So apart from ordering the farms destroyed close to where railway lines or bridges were blown up, he divided the country into areas of command. Garrisons were created in various towns and villages. To put down the insurgency in the countryside, he setup various flying columns. These were supposed to be highly mobile cavalry and mounted infantry units which were tasked with tracking down and trapping the Boer bands. In reality they could not obtain enough horses in order to achieve their main aim. However, the small bands of Boers began to multiply, and yet these flying columns could not locate the ever increasing commandos.
This episode features what's known as the Khaki election of 1900 in England, German mercenaries, Portuguese East Africa, and another update from the teenage schoolgirl called Freda who's unique view of this war continues through her diary. It also the point at which Lord Roberts makes another proclamation after his September 1st declaration that the Transvaal Republic is now officially part of the Queen's dominion. As we know, that was somewhat presumptuous as the British did not control the territory within South Africa, only the main railway line and cities. The veld remained unconquered. Transvaal President Paul Kruger and his government had been pushed inexorably towards the Portuguese EAst African territory and were based in Nelspruit, only 85 kilometers from the border. The British under Lord Roberts were about to strike at the town and a meeting of Boer leaders including President Steyn of the Free State had decided that Kruger would have to make a sea journey to Europe in an effort to beef up diplomacy. It was also to protect Kruger. Had he been captured its clear that most of the Boers would have surrendered so his leaving Africa would be both strategic and tactical. He bowed to the decision apparently as the sentence of God and on the 11th of September he bid farewell to his friends and his government at Nelspruit. Though he was really only taking leave for six months, most wondered if they'd ever see him again. He entrained for Delagoa Bay and while the Portuguese government received him with full diplomatic honours as he awaited his ship to Europe, he must have realised that this was symbolic of a circle which began with the Dutch colonising the Cape in the 1600s, leading to the Great Trek, the war, and now he was to return to the Netherlands amongst other European countries.
The beginning of September 1900 is characterised by small skirmishes that continue to plague Lord Robert's army in South Africa. It's also the start of Spring - which came as a relief for the men who'd slept under the stars with winter temperatures slipping well below zero in many parts of South Africa. But they'd forgotten what happened in mid-Summer as the blazing sun bleached the bones of the dead and powerful thunderstorms lashed the living. September and October 1900 also revealed the limitations of the political will. Remember there's been an uprising called the Boxer Rebellion in China which has occupied the minds of the citizens, whereas this show in Africa is receding in the public consciousness. The government of John X Merriman was to face more criticism shortly. Think about contemporary wars - the UN and American campaign in Iraq and Afghanistan for example. After initial reports from imbedded journalists with their dramatic stories, then the audience begins to wane particularly if the effect of the war is not immediate. Think too of how badly the Russians fared in Afghanistan after they invaded in 1979 - the result of which accelerated the decline of the Soviet Union. Unlike the first world war where people in England could actually hear the Western Front artillery barrages at times, or were bombed by Zeppelins, and in the Second world war where tens of thousands of civilians were killed in Britain, in the Anglo-Boer war the hospital ships limped into harbours with fanfare but no direct effect was felt. So the Anglo-Boer war drifted into the background, to be manipulated by political parties as they argued back and forth about ethics, empire and cost. Something like the American experience where the left and right grapple with internal issues through the lens of distant wars. For the Boers, however, this life and death struggle was very much front and centre, as it was for all South Africans. The Transvaal's political leaders were now compelled to retreat further eastwards, towards the Portuguese East Africa border, while the Orange Free State President Styen had joined Transvaal President Paul Kruger as they moved inexorably towards Delagoa Bay. Portuguese East Africa was neutral territory, and Delagoa Bay was a short-term bolt hole that beckoned both political leaders. Steyn had arrived at Waterval Onder in the final stages of the battle of Bergendal which we heard about last week. He wanted to confer with Ooom Paul Kruger and the remnants of the Transvaal government. Both were forced out of this town and headed further east to Nelspruit, only 85 kilometers from the Portuguese East Africa border. A meeting was held on the 28th August in Nelspruit and apparently this was a memorable occasion. A number of decisions were made including the crucial approval of the new method of war espoused by both General De Wet in the West along with General Koos de la Rey, and General Louis Botha in the East.
It's a full house at ERB HQ, with the Currie Cup and Rugby Championship the topic of the day's discussions. We talk to Lance Gleason of Polyglot Programming about the software, embeddable devices, biltong and how the local community stacks up against the rest of the world. Chantal, Kenneth & Kevin chat to Lance about his involvement with the South African tech community. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Lance has definitely made a name for himself in various local communities as a very involved member and connector. It was thanks to Lance that we met and invited Rebecca Franks for [episode 39](/39/), and Mandla and Theo for [episode 36](/36/). From gaming on a Commodore VIC-20 to building software for a family business to working at Kodak on satellite imaging system, to digitizing the vast media archives of CNN/Turner, Lance has had a storied career so far and leaves a great impression wherever he goes. Lance adopted a polyglot programming approach as a means to go to conferences and tap into communities. Lance gave his first ever conference talk in Cape Town at Rubyfuza 2010. Lance is also on the organizing committee for Rubyfuza, and support the yearly Ruby DCamp event that happens outside Nelspruit in the spring. Lance has also done the hard work of identifying the best biltong in the country, but you'll have to listen to find out where exactly. Lately Lance has been working with embeddable and wearable technologies and has some very interesting thoughts on the challenges faced in the field including a few things you might not think off initially. From fitness and mindfulness to medical, industrial and other applications. We wrap up the conversation reflecting on how our local talent compares against other communities overseas. Lance's perspective from having traveled from tech community to tech community is great and supportive and wants us to shine bright on the international stage.
