Unique uncensored musings about life’s content drizzled with music.
Sometimes an unusual question, asked on the fly at any time anywhere in your life can really throw you. A stop you in your tracks kinda thing. This has happened to the Boyz so many times over the years. Usually, while they are deep into a late night of recording conversation in the Homan Studio. After a few sips of firewater and a puff or two of the magic dragon, you forget about the microphone that's only a fist away. You don't even see it anymore. It's just a conversation between long-time friends. Then all of a sudden, there it is. A curve ball question nobody anticipated. In this case, the question that kicked it right out of the gate on this episode of the Hamlin Avenue Boyz Podcast is on track 1 and it was a simple one posed by Vince. Do you have a child among your children who you would have to say is your FAV? No names. Just do you? How do you answer it? Can you answer it? Especially since the world will hear your answer. And oh by-the-way you've made the commitment from the very beginning to always “Just Roll Tape” and capture it all no matter what. And it's at that very kind of moment that you're glad you have a regular in-house studio recording consultant. In this case, our dear friend Jack Herer whom The Boyz have known for such a long, long, long time. Whenever a moment like that occurs, you're glad Jack is around before the tape even rolls. He simply and consistently advises in his own special way to just relax, blow it out, and then fogetaboutit. Just let the tape roll. And that's just what the Boyz always end up doing. By-The-Way thanks to the many listeners of the Hamlin Avenue Boyz Podcast for pointing your ears in this direction now and then. And remember, you can send along your comments, questions, or topics for the Hamlin Avenue Boyz to ponder: JustRollTape@mail.com Vince Hamlin Edward Hamlin TRACKS: 1. My Fav 2. HoldEm 3. The Zone 4. So very late one night Da Boyz were taking a break from recording in the studio while their Engineers, DB Cooper, Dick Goesinya, and Barry MyKockinher (aka The Crew) worked on the Homan Studio A master control board where some wire(s) had come undone. The Boyz took the opportunity to elevate several bottles of cerveza each and fill the studio with music while they conversed at least a ‘dime's worth' along with their recording consultant, Jack Herer. Needless to say after more than an hour's delay in recording in the early morning hours that night they began to have some trouble with space and time once 'the crew' began to again roll tape. And there was a reason. As their senior producer, Tiffany Rosdedale, likes to say, “when dem Boyz open up a dime they open up their mind and they roll joints bigger than King Kong's fingers and smoke it down till they're stingers”. So listen up listeners don't Bogart this episode. Pass it on! Vince Hamlin Edward Hamlin TRACKS: 1. Welcome To The Christmas Tree Farm 2. Graveyard People 3. Take A Chance 4. Worry Wort 5. The Hamlin Boyz Life. Yes, it is. Work, Family, Money, Health, it's a journey. Every time the Boyz gets to talking, especially when recording those conversations, it seems inevitably one, some, or all of these components of life will come into play in one form or another. Some produce funny moments, some give serious pause and still, others make them think a little deeper than they might otherwise. If you have followed the Boyz for any length of time; you already know this and hopefully that's the very reason you keep coming back. By-The-Way, thank you to all of you who have written in with your comments, questions, and ideas for topics. The Boyz and the studio crew love sharing all of this with you. The Hamlin Avenue Boyz always enjoy the process associated with scheduling another ‘sit down' at the Homan Studios on Chicago's Southwest Side. They refer to it as a ‘sit down' because that's actually what they do when they occupy the Homan Studios for any length of time. Two comfortable chairs. Vince faces the door for security and Edward directly across with an eye towards their recording engineer and long-time producer behind the glass. There's always a third chair between them for their long-time studio consultant, Jack Herer. These recorded conversational adventures are never boring for the Boyz or the studio team and they often consume a number of late-night and daylight hours. They always leave exhausted, buzzed, and happy as they head to the alley behind the studios for their two-wheeled ride home. There's another recording session in the proverbial can to be combed through at length with tasty selections marked for editing, mixing, and mastering. Thanks to the support and collaboration of their long-time Producer, Tiffany Rosedale, Board Engineer, DB Cooper, and Studio Consultant, Jack Herer (They also refer to Jack as the “Emperor of Hemp”); the Boyz have consistently been productive in their studio time. If you didn't already know, studio time is an expense and they always make it count. Whenever the Boyz have a ‘sit down' they cover a lot of topics and subsequently the published recordings are from any number of sessions over a period of time. However, this particular LP recording presents a little twist to their typical LP format in that the Boyz decided to include a ‘medley' of discussion topics on track 5 that were recorded in the specific order you will hear. Track 6 is the first time the Boyz respond to ‘off-the-wall' questions and topics from you the listeners. And there's a rather large amount of conversational ‘scatter shooting' on track 8 that was also recorded in exactly the sequence you will hear. Finally, you should know, the Boyz have been ‘in conversation' with each other for decades so there is a natural familiar quality to every recording that tickles the shit out of both Boyz and those present in the studio. They sincerely hope you enjoy being a fly on da wall as you listen in….. Oh yeah and remember “Don't Believe Everything You Think” !! Not too very long ago while deep in the middle of some late-night Homan Studios conversations; the BOYZ were discussing the emergence of legal cannabis coffee and bakery shops in Chicago and the surrounding areas. This became a point of inspiration for the BOYZ who subsequently made plans to visit the 'Wake & Bakery' in Homewood, Illinois to sample some of their offerings and record the process of doing so. This they surmised was an interesting plan. So that's what they did. The BOYZ and their Homan Studios Producer, Tiffany Rosedale, showed up at the 'Wake & Bakery' on a Friday afternoon, and well.......you'll see how it turned out. When they brought back the recordings from that adventure; the Homan Studios Production Team at work on the next Hamlin Avenue Boyz LP felt the results clearly showed that "Waking and Baking" on that Friday afternoon had an impact on dem BOYZ for sure! And that it should be included in the HAB7 LP already in post-production. See if you can notice the ch ch ch ch changes as that visit unfolded. Vince Hamlin Edward Hamlin Tracks 1. There are all sorts of clubs in the world. The Hamlin Avenue Boyz (HAB) have belonged to a few different kinds of clubs over the years both individually and collectively. Most notably - together they have both joined the special club of those who have made seminal recordings within the Homan Studios environment on Chicago's Southwest Side. Every time they return to the Homan Studios, no matter how they arrive or how long they stay, they leave behind conversational impressions, moments, memories, and laughter that are inevitably worth saving and sharing. So it is with HAB6, their latest release. Or, as they like to call it - " Bad Girls Club". You see, both Vince and Edward have lived baby! And the many conversations and stories shared with you the listener are the evidence. The world today is occasionally nuts. If as has been said - IN THE BEGINNING - we actually came from an original beautiful earthly garden vs some kinda BIG bang crawl out of the water thing; we need to get back there. Life was surely simpler then. Dominion over the animals. No clothes are required. It's always sunny just like in Cleveland. And when you get bored; all of a sudden you find yourself maybe one rib short of a full rack, but in the company of a very very curvy companion. Sprinkle in the ability to make choices and the only worry you have is to stay clear of that good-looking apple tree. That should be no problem at all - right? With all the craziness in the world today; maybe we just need to get Back 2 a simpler way of life. Back 2 da Garden. But this time no fruit. Here's a Chicago Southside Hamlin Boyz roundtable for ya. What if you could create as much money as you want once per day - every day - and all you have to do is come up with a number - every day. And poof - there it is. The potential freedom from ever worrying about money again. And what if there were only two requirements. (1) You must create some amount every single day (never missing a day), and (2)....? Would you still do it or take a pass? I once heard it said that oh, well, a young man ain't got nothin' in the world these days. Have pity on the young man cuz they ain't got nothin' in the world these days. Well, you know in the old days when a young man was a strong man, all the people, they'd step back when a young man walked by. But you know, nowadays, it's the old man he's got all the money. And a young man ain't got nothin' in the world these days. So have pity on the young man cuz they ain't got nothin' to offer, but some special sauce in the world these days. They got sweet fuck-all! So, not long ago I was feelin a little anxious about things. A lot of things. And I thought to myself....maybe I should sit quietly with my hands folded and meditate or self-medicate with one or more substances. Or, dial-up my dear friend Gino in Brooklyn, New York for a little perspective. Thank the phone Jesus he was there right when I needed him. And boy did he bring it. Thank my lucky stars for that decision to call because Gino never disappoints in getting me back to a place of calm crazy vs crazy crazy if you know what I mean. Calm crazy is always preferable. Anyway, along the way, Gino essentially told me yet again "So follow me, it's good for you. That good ole fashion medicated goo. Ooh - ooh ain't it good for you. My own recipe will see you through." And it surely did. Thank you, Gino! Edward Hamlin --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/edward-hamlin/message
Amidst the very unusual times, we are now living in - the phone, FaceTime, Facebook Messenger Portal, Zoom, Google Nest Hub, Google Duo, Skype, and Amazon Echo have all become important tools for helping us get beyond the world's increasing isolation and staying in touch with relationships that we care about. And every now and then just when I need a pick-me-up conversation to get me out of some level of life funk; I dial up Gino in Brooklyn, New York. He never fails to boil it all down for me so I can laugh and maybe even melt my isolation blues away. Maybe you have a dear friend you can call at those times too. I hope so. For me, that and immersing myself in the sounds of nature are the true calming currencies of life. So, call a friend. While I can't promise a conversation with a friend will soothe every situation; I can assure you that being in or near nature will make you feel better. Just listen to a blackbird song sometime. Whether you have or have ever had a family with kids you have at least probably heard or read about the many diverse stories that come out of that paradigm. Most often a little crazy, for the most part good, definitely at times a whole lot of fun, or even just plain cute, but sometimes those stories can be a little otherworldly. The legendary businessman, Joey K is no exception to having experienced all of it with his two now-grown daughters. They are beautiful, intelligent, and most importantly powerful individuals who have been raised to be who they are regardless of the conditions they may find themselves in. And boy do they. One day while catching up with Joey K smack dab in the very early stages of the once-in-a-lifetime pandemic; we found out both of his daughters had just returned home to spend the national pandemic lockdown with their parents. And while both young adult daughters were living in Dallas and L.A. respectively they chose to return to the nest and with it the awesome relationship dynamics that seem to always be there no matter the circumstances. It's definitely a family affair. Edward Hamlin --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/edward-hamlin/message
To speak hypothetically means to base a statement on a hypothesis or a proposed situation, sometimes for the sake of reasoning some humorous responses to a hypothetical from another person. Sometimes maybe even while they are in an altered state? In simpler terms, it's like saying 'what if' and creating a scenario to support an idea that just might illicit fun or funny dialogue between two or more people. Now, I have to say that whenever I happen to be alongside the legendary businessman, Joey K, it is always a consideration for me to bring along some hypotheticals for him to digest. Fortunately, Joey digests things quickly and thoroughly with absolutely nothing going to waste. This usually makes for delightfully tasty conversation. Yum. So what if you could have spent a day or an evening or both 'Drinking With Mickey Mantle'. Could ya? Would ya? If you did, imagine how that might have turned out? Every now and then, if you pay attention, life presents nuggets or pearls of experiences you really need to appreciate. Catching up with old friends you haven't visited with for a long while being one of them. One very late night as I was heading to the lobby bar of a beautiful music venue in Dallas, Texas I ran into the legendary businessman, Joey K. It had been a while since we last found ourselves together anywhere for a tasty stop-N-chat. And as has always been the case, Joey K didn't disappoint even if the visit was brief - it was delightful. I just let Joey drive the conversation. Most people are familiar with The 7 Deadly Sins. Just to review, they are LUST, GLUTTONY, GREED, SLOTH, WRATH, ENVY, and PRIDE. And they all reside in Sin City. Now supposedly they aren't the 7 Deadly 'Options' in terms of experiences you can select from. And, it has been said you are to try and steer clear of these things. However, how bout this - let's say you have to select at least one (or more) that you would like to fully experience in this life. Without the religious or legal repercussions that might come along with that decision. Which one do you choose? Or, have you already previously selected one that has actually already dominated your life for some time now in which case we may need to have a talk, my friend. I'm putting my toe into Sin City. As I and my brother from another mother were fast approaching the dinner hour one fine day; we got to talking about the idea of the 'Blue Plate Special' that might be on tap for the last meal of someone on death row. For that matter, what would someone actually choose, what can be chosen and what does that say about them, their crime(s), and the soon-to-be execution of their sentence? One late spring early summer afternoon, I found myself hanging with a brother from another mother. Vince Hamlin and I go way back. I mean WAY back. We were and still are known as The Hamlin Avenue Boyz from the far southwest side deep in the city with broad shoulders. Chicago. On this particular afternoon as we swam to the bottom of several Stella Artois 12oz bottles and lit a fire under more than one 'Dogwalker' pre-roll; we found ourselves heading down a rabbit hole of conversation about "time". We've all heard that time waits for no one and it supposedly won't wait for you or me, but by the end of our afternoon visit what we discovered was time is actually on our side after all. How do we know? Because what seemed like hours during our visit turned out to be much shorter. Don't let the clock fool ya. It's all made up to simply measure movement from one thing to the next. Who knew? Edward Hamlin --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/edward-hamlin/message

I've been to so many places in my life and time. Technology is evolving crazy fast these days. In fact, it is reasonable to suggest that before too long we may be able to even more easily facilitate remote love or even nefarious criminal activity. We hope not because there is seemingly no substitute for the real in-personal thing. Or so we thought. Edward Hamlin --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/edward-hamlin/message
And then there were hats. Lots and lots of hats. The history of the planet has brought about numerous forms of head-coverings. For men and women. Just in the last 100 years or so, there have been so many styles to choose from across the world. Are you a hat person? Guess who thinks he's not. Is it the legendary businessman, Joey K, or the inimitable, Edward Hamlin? Let's just see. Edward Hamlin --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/edward-hamlin/message
It seems we're getting closer and closer to the potential for each of us to literally have the option to 'live on' indefinitely in an artificially intelligent digital form. To the point where future generations could interact with that "you". Forever. Holy Shit is right! It can be both exciting and frightening to ponder it. And it was through the wonder of today's digital technology that I was able to ask the legendary businessman, Joey K, what his thoughts were on the subject. After hearing him out; I have concluded that he's on to something. Edward Hamlin --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/edward-hamlin/message
Dear Listener, What a dream I had this morning as I broke through from a night of deep sleep to twilight sleep. Go figure. So you're standing in the woods late at night next to your very dear friend and you are both looking straight at a close encounter of the 5th kind. A being from outside the solar neighborhood. Neither of you moves a muscle, but you can hear this stranger speak to you only in your head. Not in your ears. And this interstellar stranger starts out with a very unusual question about life on planet earth. "What is sales?" Wait. What? Did we hear that right? Man, talk about a curveball question at a time like this. Well, in that case, there is no better friend to be alongside than the legendary businessman, Joey K. Thank my lucky stars for that. Technology is an awesome thing when it comes to communication. Even when it doesn't work as planned. And if It doesn't work? In the early part of a southern California afternoon not too terribly long ago - I met up with the legendary Joey K at a somewhat otherworldly watering hole called “The Encounter Cocktail Lounge” in the Los Angeles International Airport. Turns out, the iconic atomic architecture themed building is the perfect pitstop between flights or as a destination unto itself. In either case, it is worth the adventure if you are ever in that part of the world. On this particular afternoon, we began our conversation innocently enough after just a few strong libations between us. But by the time we climbed out of the conversation rabbit hole that afternoon - we had covered a number of subjects from being famous to eyebrows and a whole host of things in between. The conversation ‘and’ atmosphere produced some words to live by. When we were done we executed the perfect WEST LA FADEAWAY. Let’s “Just Roll Tape 20” ….. On a very snowy night driving from Boston to Keene New Hampshire with Joey K at the wheel (because after all - you always Let Joey Drive, right?); we encountered full-blown blizzard hypnotizing moments - one after the other - where we weren't quite sure if we were still on the road. Or still in the car. Clock time never seemed to match our recollection when we tried to recall the drive later that night at 'A Cup Full Cafe' in Keene. But it did produce amazing coffee talk inspired as is often the case by the legendary businessman, Joey K. Hear now - "An Easy Guide To The World" in exactly 8 minutes and 59 seconds. Take the incomparable Joey K and his grasshopper mensch, Edward Hamlin. Mix in multiple trips to The Atlantis Paradise Island Cove and Poolside Cabana where they served themselves and others with loquacious conversation cocktails during many a day and night. And hopefully, that will satisfy even the most discriminating eavesdroppers. The Choice is Yours! "Whatchusayin?" "Yeah, ya see." The Legendary Super Mensch Joey K was recorded 'live' at the Starlite Club offering his sage advice to all who have questions about life and love that must be answered. If you ever need a shoulder to cry on, an arm to hang on, or just a plain Ol good listener that just happens to have a Master's Degree in Counseling no less. Joey K is your go-to life and love questions resource. He didn't ask for that mantle, but as it sometimes happens, life tapped him on the shoulder and told him "Joey, you can do this. The world needs you!" So, he simply accepts it and lets the fun begin. Got a question for Joey K? Air travel has always had the potential to be otherworldly at any time depending on circumstances, but these days 'otherworldly' takes on a whole different vibe. In front of a fire on the shores of Lake Tahoe one August night, we learned much from a human wisdom channel we tuned in to. We agree. Music makes the world go round. However, we don't care what the voices tell him. Gingers ‘are’ beautiful life adventures. Edward Hamlin --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/edward-hamlin/message
There are a million stories in the naked city. And this is just one we ran into over lunch one day. Take a legacy of over two hundred years of defending our nation. Mix in a little 'perspective' on how one individual might get into that line of work and you will become more aware of a unique national and personal history that is unfolding right in front of you. With the entire world spending time 'behind the mask' a lot these days - we wondered what a movie review might be like living in this new world. Each one of us has a favorite dish we'd like to see every now and then. And sometimes that dish is so special to us - it almost deserves a totally custom name because it simply represents all of our most favorite personal tastes. It almost becomes identified with us. It is our dish. Let's claim it as our dish today and name it after ourselves once and for all. If you were going to name your favorite dish after yourself and let others partake in the edible joy that is you.....what would it be called?
