I speak with artist and multi-instrumentalist Robert Ellis, one of the best singer-songwriters of his generation. I'll tell you why: first, his songs do what great pop songs do - grab your attention with a hook as sticky as hot honey (check out “Bottle of Wine” for an example), but you get a sense there's always something held in reserve, something that won't be revealed until you come back for a second or third or fourth listen.That might have to do with Robert's respect for the mutable laws of music theory (we talk about the relationship of the V to I cadence as the backbone for all music since Bach), or his sense of play evident in a catalogue that already spans 6 albums across genres as diverse as bluegrass-inspired ripper (“Sing Along”) to 70s' Rock (“Nobody Smokes Anymore”), or the soft spun album “Yesterday's News” reminiscent of Willie Nelson's “Rainbow Connection”.Or it could have to do with the fact that while guitar is his primary instrument (he is a *very* good guitar player) his chops on piano are formidable enough that not only did he release an album on ivories (2019's Texas Piano Man), but he toured it heavily - in a white tux and top hat, often solo at the keys.The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Robert has played Tiny Desk, Mountain Stage, and more recently, Carnegie Hall and collaborated with countless musicians from Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes to Jamestown Revival to Tift Merritt.A few weeks ago he took time off his tour with Parker Millsap to talk with me about his free-spirited approach to songwriting, playing and creativity in general.In this wide-ranging conversation we talk about the narrative parallels between music and literature, and how even chord progressions have a narrative arc. We talk about the importance of — when evaluating a prospective work of art — shifting the question from “Is it perfect”? to “Is it me?” We even venture into territory of a purely philosophical bent, discussing Free Will and its role in a empathic worldview. Robert is consistent with his meditative practice, and as a father of three, his kids often join in for the morning meditation. We hit on the importance in being absolutely present while both performing and producing, and how that ethos applies to acting. Robert recently acted in a short film, directed by his wife, filmmaker Erica Silverman. He talked a little about that experience which I found revealing and charming and hilarious.Finally, the Texas Troubadour sat down to play his original “On the Run” live in studio on solo guitar. Watch and listen below.There's a lot more in this conversation, one of my favorite ever on this podcast. Get full access to The Morse Code at korby.substack.com/subscribe

One of this year's most Tony Award nominated new musicals (with 12 nominations) is THE OUTSIDERS, the new musical adaptation of The S.E Hinton Novel currently playing at Broadway's Jacobs Theatre. Here is his ★★★ review on the musical. The Outsiders is a 12-time Tony Award-nominated musical adaptation of the groundbreaking novel by S. E. Hinton and film by Francis Ford Coppola. The cast features Brody Grant as "Ponyboy," Sky Lakota-Lynch as "Johnny," Daniel Marconi as "Randy," Kevin William Paul as "Bob," Brent Comer as "Paul," Ryan Vasquez as "Darrel," Da'Von T. Moody as "Dallas," Jason Schmidt as "Sodapop," Trevor McGhie as "Two-Bit," Piper Patterson as "Cherry," and Kiki Lemieux as "Marcia." Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two teenage gangs sustain a rivalry: the well-to-do "Socs" (short for "socials") and the ne'er-do-well "greasers." The greasers, including the iconic characters of Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade, have an often rocky brotherhood, but in a society that's all but abandoned them, it's all they have. The Outsiders musical tells a timeless coming-of-age story about finding hope and connection in a rough world. Hinton published her novel in 1967, the same year the show is set and three years after she started writing the novel while still in high school herself. The Outsiders book and its subsequent 1983 film adaptation remain groundbreaking for their naturalistic, unsanitized portrayals of how teenagers talk and act and what happens when they're neglected. The film also launched the careers of then-new actors like Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, and Matt Dillon. The Outsiders Broadway musical features original songs by Justin Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival, composed of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. The book is by Tony-nominated playwright Adam Rapp, known for The Sound Inside, and Levine. • 00:00 | introduction 03:36 | overview / synopsis 07:16 | the material 13:59 | the highlights 17:21 | performances • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. There are all sorts of clubs in the world. The Hamlin Avenue Boyz (HAB) have belonged to a few different kinds of clubs over the years both individually and collectively. Most notably - together they have both joined the special club of those who have made seminal recordings within the Homan Studios environment on Chicago's Southwest Side. Every time they return to the Homan Studios, no matter how they arrive or how long they stay, they leave behind conversational impressions, moments, memories, and laughter that are inevitably worth saving and sharing. So it is with HAB6, their latest release. Or, as they like to call it - " Bad Girls Club". You see, both Vince and Edward have lived baby! Un nuevo tema de los fantásticos The Youngers abre hoy para dejar paso a dos excelentes versiones de country de los 90 en el nuevo volumen 2 de los American Aquarium. Kieran Ridge y sus Moonrakers tocan americana acústica desde Boston (por eso suenan como irlandeses), cercana a los tejanos Jamestown Revival que hacen una mezcla de country sureño, americana y música western. Otra de las grandes novedades es por fin ya el disco de John Mellencamp, con colaboraciones de Bruce Springsteen, que ofrece su versión radical de la cultura estadounidense que evoca tiempos más oscuros antes de que naciera el compositor que tiene ya 70 años. Los Lumineers finalmente presentan un disco flojillo (al menos para nosotros) aunque para no romper la atmósfera suave, recuperamos de ayer a Malcolm Holcombe con sus piezas casi acústicas. Y el final newmexicano de Dean Owens también le pega de sobra al ambiente plomizo que parece haberse quedado.The Youngers, Cat EyesAmerican Aquarium, That Ain't My TruckAmerican Aquarium, Money in the BankKieran Ridge & the Moonrakers, The Last One to KnowKieran Ridge & the Moonrakers, Straight to the Heart of LoveJamestown Revival, These DaysJamestown Revival, Slow It DownJohn Mellencamp, Did You Say Such A ThingJohn Mellencamp, Lie To MeThe Lumineers, BirthdayThe Lumineers, RepriseMalcolm Holcombe, Crazy Man BluesMalcolm Holcombe, Good IntentionsDean Owens, New Mexicop { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 115%; background: transparent }

Is that optimism I hear? MLB owners and players finally met to discuss the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, and while they didn't make much progress on the face of it, Mark, Bryson and Jacob discuss if anything productive came out of the talks. They also look at the Toronto Blue Jays' international signings and what it means for the organization. Lastly, Bryson presents a series of questions on the 2022 Blue Jays, including whether Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will hit 50 home runs in 2022. What will Hyun Jin Ryu's ERA be? Can George Springer stay healthy? Will Bo Bichette get below 20 errors? Subscribe to Section 138 on YouTube for video podcasts: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTCRKhBRu9kVO2fDuc2q8Aw/featured. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jamestown Revival over Zoom video! Jamestown Revival have made the quietest record of their career with Young Man, yet it may resonate the most. Recorded in their home state of Texas, it is their first project without electric guitars, with the emphasis instead on skillful songwriting, flawless harmony, and intricate fingerpicking. In addition, it's the first time that bandmates Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance have created an album with a producer -- in this case, Robert Ellis, a fellow Texan and a recording artist in his own right.Sonically the album draws on inspirations such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and The Doobie Brothers (particularly “Black Water”), yet there's also a dusty Western feel to Young Man, similar to a Guy Clark or Townes Van Zandt album where the detailed backdrop and acoustic arrangements convey the story as eloquently as the lyrics do..Young Man opens with “Coyote,” a plaintive ballad the duo wrote on their ranch near Huntsville, Texas, about an hour north of their hometown of Magnolia. With its lonesome tones and sly title character, it sets the tone for the album, pulling in listeners with blended voices and a narrative that befits a campfire setting. From there, songs like “Young Man,” “Moving Man,” “Northbound,” and especially “These Days” further explore their restless frame of mind, due in no small part to the pandemic.Chance and Clay envision Young Man as a collection of songs that should be played all the way through, like reading a book. “We had the most amazing time recording this album. We laughed nonstop,” Clay says. “When I listen to this album top to bottom, I'm really proud of what we did. I hope that this album transports people because it's like a time capsule. It takes us right back to that studio and to that couple of weeks. It felt like we were doing what we were meant to do.”ABOUT JAMESTOWN REVIVAL:Jamestown Revival deliver skillful songwriting, flawless harmony, and intricate fingerpicking on their newest album, Young Man. The project is their first without electric guitars and their first to be recorded in a studio. Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance forged a musical bond as teenagers growing up in Magnolia, Texas. They draw musical inspiration from groups like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and The Doobie Brothers, as well as songwriters such as Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. With themes like coming of age and settling into an identity, Young Man is envisioned as a collection of songs that should be played all the way through. Sonically, the album evokes the experience of musicians huddled together, singing and playing without headphones or click tracks. Chance and Clay are joined on the Young Man sessions by producer Robert Ellis and the band's longtime rhythm section of bassist Nick Bearden and drummer Ed Benrock. We want to hear from you! This show is going to be a little different from our usual programming. As I'm sure you've noticed- we've taken a little bit of a break over the last few months as we've taken the time to regroup, and reconstruct etc. As we move forward, it is important to us to reiterate that we are still very much dedicated as a platform to the expansion and definition of Americana Music through conversations with those working within its spectrum.This show has come a very long way from its initial launch. From interview formatting, the artists we book, the kind of questions we ask, and the locations we've been- it's grown and expanded in ways I don't think we could have ever imagined. And admittedly, sometimes it's hard to appreciate the work we've done as we look at the work we want to do. As we plot out that future, we wanted to take this time and opportunity to look back on some of our favorite moments that we've had. In our very first Artist's Archive, we go back to the very beginning and revisit some of the best times with artists we love and cover everything from the hardest conversations to the most rewarding laughs and all topped off with the music we all love so well. We hope you enjoy this nod to our past and continue to join us as we look (or should I say listen) to the future.
Jamestown Revival strikes gold in The Marinade! Jamestown Revival is a musical duo made up of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. They have released three full length records, a live album, and four EPs, including the most recent offering Fireside with Louis L'Amour. In addition to those wonderful records, the guys just collaborated to write the music for the stage production of SE Hinton's classic novel The Outsiders. Jonathan and Zach and thoughtful, funny, open, and honest conversationalists.
New music from H.E.R, Joy Oladokum, Jamestown Revival, Pat Chessell, Steve Earl, Rose Cousins, Garrison Star, Valerie June, Born on Wednesday, and more.
We're delighted to share a conversation that we recently had with the band Jamestown Revival and Beau L'Amour, the son of the immensely influential and prolific author, Louis L'Amour. They all stopped by to chat with Amy Wright about the new EP, Fireside with Louis L'Amour: A Collection of Songs Inspired by Tales from the American West, which Jamestown Revival released on May 28th. L'Amour's stories have been a major influence on Jonathan and Zach's writing, and their lives, for that matter, and to see this project come to fruition has been a real treat for everyone. Grizzly Goat's music is as the band's name suggests, undomesticated. Grizzly's blend of folk-rock spans the entire breadth of the Americana genre; from soft and sincere campfire ballads to rocking electric harmonica solos on top of pounding drums and flailing banjo. The band is hardworking and tireless. They've brought their rootsy compositions from coast to coast in their white passenger van. Whether at a festival or a small scale BBQ joint, Grizzly Goat's aim is to connect with their audience on an individual level, building a relationship with each listener. Specifically, the band has supported acts such as Greensky Bluegrass, Jim Avett, River Whyless, Town Mountain, Jamestown Revival, and Brett Dennen, along with playing at such festivals as the John Hartford Memorial Fest, Treefort Music Festival, Mayesfest, Forest Fest, Decatur BBQ Blues and Bluegrass Fest, Zion Canyon Music Fest, and the kick-off for the Cold Mountain Music Festival. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

En realidad, se querían llamar Derek And The Dynamics. Escuchar audio

This week on The Show On The road, we feature a conversation with Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance, two Texans and expert harmonizers who for the last decade have toured the world as Jamestown Revival. Right before all tours got sent home, host Z. Lupetin was able to hop on the Jamestown Revival tour bus (sorry for the engine hum) to discuss their intimate new record, San Isabel, and their journey from meeting as curious singing teenagers in Magnolia, TX to their move out west and back home again. While their previous record, The Education of a Wandering Man, saw them harnessing the muscular roots-rock that can be heard at their powerful live shows, San Isabel strips everything back to their intimate two-voices-around-one-mic, “southern and Garfunkel” sound that brought them together in the first place -- and has rightfully won them hordes of fans coast to coast. They say sibling harmony can't be compared and we've had several sets of twin bands on the podcast, but what about soul-brother harmony? If one thing is clear just sitting on the bus and listening to them weave their stories and songs together, it's that Clay and Chance were born to sing together. San Isabel was laid down at Ward Lodge Studios overlooking the San Isabel National Forest in Buena Vista, Colorado and often includes the natural sounds of the nature all around them. Give it a listen -- it's peaceful and powerful and raw and maybe just what we all need right now.
In the summer of 2018, we said "We need to talk about Americana music". At the time it felt that there was an apparent disconnect in not only the discussion around the genre but in the would-be community as well. Industry workers and audiences were leading the conversation, but there appeared to be a disturbing absence of input from the most important individuals in American-roots-based music… The artists themselves. On April 30th, 2019, after a year of writing, recording and refining- Americana Podcast was released into the world. We have recorded in studios, green rooms, and in front of live audiences- we have stayed up into the wee hours of the morning researching, conducting interviews and editing.. (so much editing..) And have dedicated ourselves to defining not only the genre but the experience fo Americana artists, with parameters set by the artists themselves. On this, our anniversary episode, we invite Zach Chance and Jonathon Clay of Jamestown Revival back.. but on their recommendation- with a twist. Zach and John will be interviewing our host and moderator of Americana, Robert Earl Keen. So join us from the BMI offices in Austin, TX as we celebrate our one year anniversary episode and look to the future of Americana music.
This week on the podcast I'm talking about risk when we look at investing in our selves to solve a personal issue like over-drinking. So many of you don't want to invest because it's a risk. You might not have used this word before but if you have thoughts like, it might not work or I don't want to spend more money on another program that won't work or I can probably do it on my own, I don't need to pay for it, then you aren't willing to risk the investment. The truth is we take bigger more costly risks every day but the difference is that we BELIEVE the benefits outweigh the risks. Tune in to learn what you are RISKING when you don't invest in yourself. I pulled the trigger on the Rode Rodecaster Pro. You're listening to it now. I'll update you on what's happening here inside The Yellow Studio at the end of the show. Thanks to everybody who contributed. I'll be reaching out in the next few weeks to get the Skype calls scheduled. Randy Some nights ago. I don't remember what day. Or night. It's 2:15 am and I'm wide awake. Not uncommon. I fire up Apple iTunes, where all my music resides, including the thousands of CD's I've burned. And the digital downloads I've purchased. I slap on a pair of headphones, one of about four within arm's reach. I turn up the headphone amp to about 10 o'clock, plenty loud for me at this hour. Jamestown Revival album UTAH is calling out to me for some reason. Released in 2014 it's been a month or more since I've given it a go...so why not. I've been practically living on their newer release, circa this year 2019, San Isabel. So it's time to dive into my catalog a bit. This all happens because revival is on my mind. Their band name sparks it, but my love of their music is the draw. UTAH has a song entitled, Revival. So let's do it. I click PLAY. It's track 6 and track 7 follows, a song entitled Truth. A theme begins to emerge and intersects what's been on my mind the last week or more. Vince Gill's new record OKIE is a few weeks old and I've listened to it through a handful of times by now. As I'm pondering revival I start thinking of one particular song from this record, The Price of Regret. So I click PLAY and give it a go. Again. "Everyone knows the price of regret, the things in life we never forget." Regret. Revival. By the time I get to the 11th track of Vince's new record (there are 12 tracks total), I've added a third R-word, reputation. The song is entitled, That Old Man Of Mine. It's followed by the last track, A World Without Haggard. Songs of reputation. Legacy. What we remember about people. What people remember us for. Regret. Revival. Reputation. I don't suppose all three are important to everybody. Some people claim to have no regrets. I think that's foolish. Others refuse revival. Some perhaps because their character is so low they're nothing to revive. Did they ever have it? Maybe. Maybe not. Some refuse revival because they don't want to revive it. Easier, perhaps more short-term fun, to remain in sin and suffering. No going back to a time when they were more noble, more innocent, more helpful and made a more positive difference in the lives of others. So reputations are largely earned. Deserved perhaps. And I'm not talking about public reputation or how the masses feel. Most of us aren't subjected to that because we're mostly anonymous to the world. But inside our little corner of the world, we're known. For something. As something. What? When my kids were quite small - toddlers really - I was spending considerable time with an old man who was an important mentor in my life. Weekly we spent hours together talking and studying. I was burning life's candle at both ends, spending close to 80 hours working and devoting time to church and family. It was exhausting, but I was young and didn't think much of it. Truthfully, my energy was quite high much of the time. So one weeknight each week sitting at his kitchen table - sometimes with my family in tow - wasn't burdensome. I wanted to know what he knew and was anxious to learn all I could. One evening talk turned to family. He was a father with grown children. I was mere years into my own fatherhood and I inquired about regret. He said he had no regrets. Here was a man I respected. A man 25 plus years my senior. I remember thinking of my own regrets and I had many years to go to reach his age. It seemed impossible to me, so I pressed him. "I can't think of anything I'd do differently," he said, referencing his fatherhood. I didn't pursue the conversation any further, even though I was supremely puzzled.

The title is a lyric from the newest Jamestown Revival record, San Isabel. The song is, "This Too Shall Pass." For those of you interested - and some of you are - here's some music I'm listening to at the moment...in addition to this new Jamestown Revival record. The Hunts - Darlin' Oh Darlin' (2018) The Hollering Pines - Long Nights, Short Lives and Spilled Chances (2013) The Bones of J.R. Jones - The Bones of J.R. Jones (2019) - he is Jonathon Robert Linaberry but performs as The Bones of J.R. Jones (he's a solo artist) Rickie Lee Jones - Kicks (2019) American Aquarium - Wolves (2015) Kylie Rae Harris - Kylie Rae Harris EP (2019) And of course, I'm listening to the usual suspects as well. Mandolin Orange is still aways a big player. Anderson East, Jade Bird, James Morrison and Josh Ritter. There's so much good music. Music and solitude go hand in hand for me. And writing. Sometimes drawing, which more closely resembles doodling these days. All this listening to music violates the true meaning of solitude - which is defined by psychology in a way not quite to my liking. Solitude is the state of being alone without being lonely. The authors of a book, Lead Yourself First, give a more detailed definition that I rather like. Solitude is a state of mind, a space where you can focus on your own thoughts without distraction, with a power to bring mind and soul together in clear-eyed conviction. Simply put, it's freedom from distraction. Technically listening to music violates the definition I suppose. But I count it anyway. Lyrics and melodies provoke thoughts, but I consider that a positive distraction. It feeds my solitude. It's part of rest, restoration and rejuvenation. A Coat Of Armor We all have one. Because we all need one. Every now and again. Truthfully, I think we need one more often than not. Sorta like being fully clothed. We spend most of our time being fully clothed. Okay, I won't get into a modesty debate just here, but you know what I mean. ;) Not many people see me running around in my boxers and a t-shirt. It's a select few. So it is with exposing ourselves sans armor. It's just not safe most of the time. Armor is protection. You're likely thinking of the armor worn by knights in medieval days. Or maybe you're thinking of the body armor worn by today's soldiers or law enforcement officers. Here in Texas, you could even be thinking of armadillos. We need armor to protect against attacks. From people intending to harm us. Armor can also signify resilience, our ability to protect ourselves against adversity. Circumstances. Events. People. Situations. It's not bad. It's necessary. And part of how we all must live our lives. Introversion Versus Extroversion Of all the personality traits these seem the most talked about. They're the biggest elephants in the room often used to describe ourselves or others. I can only speak to my own introversion, which is part of my armor. Just like an extrovert deploys that quality as part of her armor. My introversion appears quite frequently like extroversion. Somebody smarter than me will have to explain it. My way of looking at it is based on my internal energy. When my armor is weakened, I retreat. It's one way I can refuel and attempt to fortify myself. Attempt being the operative word. ;) I suspect extroverts do the opposite. When their armor is weakened, they likely seek the company of others in their effort to recharge and renew strength. Such is the individual nature of our armor - whatever characteristics and qualities make up our armor are largely individual to us. While it's true that we're much more alike than not, it's the subtle nuances of our personalities that make us US. In medieval days a big part of the armor was the shield. You could judge a knight by his shield. It was a primary identifier. For whom is this knight fighting? Who and what does he represent? Our armor,
