This week's Blues is the Truth is packed with soul, grit and powerful music from across the blues spectrum, hosted as always by Ian McHugh. There's a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Joe Louis Walker, who features heavily in the show, and Ian also brings news about two outstanding new blues films you won't want to miss. Musically, it's a journey through classics and new favourites, including the raw emotion of John Primer and the powerful collaboration between Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Bobby Rush. Katie Bradley and Chris Corcoran light up the speakers with their distinctive style, and we've got searing guitar work from the likes of Eric Clapton, Popa Chubby, Matt Schofield, Robin Bibi, Sean Chambers, and Eric Johansen. The iconic sounds of Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, Charlie Musselwhite, and the Vaughan Brothers sit comfortably alongside the soulful voices of Janiva Magness, Kyla Brox, Lou Pride, and Ally Venable. There's also music from Darcy Perry, Jordan Officer, and a brilliant track from Joe Louis Walker that reminds us just how much he's shaped the modern blues landscape. Don't miss this emotional, exciting and expertly curated episode. As always, like, follow, share, subscribe, and leave a review—it all helps spread the blues even further!

HAHAHAHA OK, OK...we're just a bunch of professional musicians with pretty diverse backgrounds who decided to take on a pretty big challenge and have some fun in the process.  Now, you might ask, “Oh yeah? Professional musicians, eh? What makes you think you can play Frank's music as well as [insert Zappa family/band member here]?” Well, maybe you haven't heard of us individually, but  "we're pretty good musicians"  and you probably have heard of the folks on our resumes:  BB King, Mick Fleetwood, Vinnie Colaiuta, Googoosh, Dweezil Zappa, LA Philharmonic, Arthur Barrow, Munich Philharmonic, Bryan Beller, Popa Chubby, Yo Yo Ma, Limelight: A Tribute To Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Chicago Lyric Opera, Madison Opera, blah blah blah....you get the idea. As for Frank's music, he was constantly changing things, both for his own creative choices and to adapt to the different musicians he had over the years. He also understood that his live performances were entertainment: it's supposed to be a rock show, not a piano recital. With all that in mind, we don't think playing Song X from Album Y note-for-note while staring at our shoes is the proper way to go about this. The result of that approach (combined with a lot of homework) is a show that pays respect to Zappa's legacy, but is also new and different and dangerous and FUN, with lots of eyebrows. Kinda like Frank.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

Roaring out of New York City comes Popa Chubby with his unique blend of blues, rock and soul. Born Ted Horowitz, he cut his teeth on the late Seventies' NY punk scene, even joining Richard Hell & the Voidoids for awhile. He issued his first album in 1994, and he's never looked back - 38 albums to his credit. For his latest album, Live at G. Bluey's Juke Joint NYC, Chubby took an unique approach: do a live record in a studio, and invite only 50 friends. The result feels like you're onstage with the musicians. Chubby decided to let those friends help pick some of the songs, resulting in an eclectic mix of hits and rarities, some he hadn't played live in years. No overdubs, just Popa Chubby and band, as it happened. We chat with the guitar slinger, who was in the middle of touring Germany during our talk, about stretching out on some of the songs, interacting with the great musicians, and how he feels about rap music and its lineage to the blues.

The Hamlin Avenue Boyz always enjoy the process associated with scheduling another ‘sit down' at the Homan Studios on Chicago's Southwest Side. They refer to it as a ‘sit down' because that's actually what they do when they occupy the Homan Studios for any length of time. Two comfortable chairs. Vince faces the door for security and Edward directly across with an eye towards their recording engineer and long-time producer behind the glass. There's always a third chair between them for their long-time studio consultant, Jack Herer. These recorded conversational adventures are never boring for the Boyz or the studio team and they often consume a number of late-night and daylight hours. They always leave exhausted, buzzed, and happy as they head to the alley behind the studios for their two-wheeled ride home. There's another recording session in the proverbial can to be combed through at length with tasty selections marked for editing, mixing, and mastering. Thanks to the support and collaboration of their long-time Producer, Tiffany Rosedale, Board Engineer, DB Cooper, and Studio Consultant, Jack Herer (They also refer to Jack as the “Emperor of Hemp”); the Boyz have consistently been productive in their studio time. If you didn't already know, studio time is an expense and they always make it count. Whenever the Boyz have a ‘sit down' they cover a lot of topics and subsequently the published recordings are from any number of sessions over a period of time. However, this particular LP recording presents a little twist to their typical LP format in that the Boyz decided to include a ‘medley' of discussion topics on track 5 that were recorded in the specific order you will hear. Track 6 is the first time the Boyz respond to ‘off-the-wall' questions and topics from you the listeners. And there's a rather large amount of conversational ‘scatter shooting' on track 8 that was also recorded in exactly the sequence you will hear. Finally, you should know, the Boyz have been ‘in conversation' with each other for decades so there is a natural familiar quality to every recording that tickles the shit out of both Boyz and those present in the studio. Episode 45 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 10 Nov 2022.  The show kicked off with ACDC and a track off Let There Be Rock called ‘Overdose'.  From there we continued with Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, and White Zombie.  We went into the ‘00s and cranked the Nu Metal with Drowning Pool and the title track off the Sinner album, the one that gave the world 'Bodies' and 'Broken Home' off Papa Roach's Infest album.  Strangely enough, we went from that into some mellow blues, courtesy of Popa Chubby and ZZ Top with Trouble and Blue Jean Blues respectively.  It was the Papa to Popa connection that did it. From the Blues, we checked out Iron Maiden and another track off Power Slave called ‘Back In the Village'.  Herman Frank, ex of Accept got a look-in with a track off his latest album Two For a Lie.  We stayed in Germany for some Rammstein and a bit later 'Blackout' from Scorpions, another song written about Eskom.  A highlight of the show was the back-to-back pairing of Tony Martin and Joe Lynn Turner, two vocalists who have played in the best bands in the world and have both released solo alums in the last 12 months.  Joe Lynn Turner has Peter Tägtgren producing and doing the guitar work and it is one hell of a combination.  We had some more Nu Metal courtesy of Limp Bizkit and then used Courtney Love's band Hole,  with a track called 'Rock Star' to lead us into a quick farewell and RIP to Nazareth's Dan McCafferty who passed away this week.  As explained on the show Nazareth are a very special band to those of us growing up in the '70s and '80s and we thanked Dan for writing and performing some awesome classic songs.   We took in 'When Your Love is Gone' by Assie legend Jimmy Barnes and then spent nearly nine minutes on the Thin Lizzy classic ‘Still In Love With You'.  It came off the Live album called Life and features all the Thin Lizzy guitarists Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White, and John Sykes.  Texas Hippie Coalition moved the show out of the ballads and Night Ranger and Queensrÿche continued the excellent medicine and took it to the next level.  The new Queensrÿche, Digital Noise Alliance' is fantastic, check it out.  This show just had too much material and not enough time.  We tipped the hat to Judas Priest for their well-deserved and long overdue inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we listened to another awesome Vivian Campbell solo and heard how powerful Andrew Freeman is on a track called ‘Year of The Gun' and we squeezed in an amazingly emotional track from My Chemical Romance called 'The World is Ugly'.  The consensus on the chat was that MCR are correct on this point.  Cheers all, see you next week, I hope you enjoy the episode.     Artists featured:  ACDC, Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, White Zombie, Drowning Pool, Papa Roach, Popa Chubby, ZZ Top, Iron Maiden, Herman Frank, Rammstein, Anthrax, Dead City Ruins, Burning Rain, Skid Row, Five Finger Death Punch, Scorpions, Tony Martin, Joe Lynn Turner, Leslie West Tribute, Limp Bizkit, Hole, Nazareth, The Gaslight Anthem, Jimmy Barnes, Thin Lizzy, Texas Hippie Coalition, Night Ranger, Queensrÿche, Halestorm, Judas Priest, Last In Line, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Johnny Cash, In Flames     The Story of Rock and Roll. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Popa ChubbyPopa Chubby, born Ted Horowitz, has been hard rocking the blues in his fierce and soulful way for more than 30 years. Over the course of a career that dates back to 1994, he has been a force of to be reckoned with on the guitar, and his tempestuous, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head, tattooed arms, a goatee and a performance style he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson," Popa Chubby is an endearing character who is one of the genre's most popular figures.

Pete Thorn Bio-While prolific guitar sideman Pete Thorn may refer to himself as a “guitar nerd” – his resume proves he's anything but. His effortless, dynamic playing has landed him onstage alongside such legendary artists as Don Henley, Chris Cornell and Melissa Etheridge among others — and his debut solo CD Guitar Nerd garnered critical praise and landed on CD Baby's top selling albums list.Channeling his inner gear nerd, Thorn has taken to demonstrating guitar gear and accessories on his wildly popular Youtube channel (at this writing, 90,000 subscribers and growing rapidly). Pete's videos have so far garnered more than 17 million views – proving there's a lot of “guitar nerds” out there. But if a lifelong, unabashed passion for playing guitar in all its styles and permutations with some of the best artists in the world qualifies as “nerd” status…? Then Pete Thorn is, indeed, a fabulous guitar nerd.FELIPE TORRES Drums/Percussion/Backing Vocal Performance /Recording Artist/ClinicianFelipe has performed around the USA, Europe, Japan, Australia, and Canada, as well as appearing on The CBS Morning Show, TV Land, The Biography Channel, The Modern Drummer Festival 2008 and has had his articles published on the Evans and Vic Firth websites. Over the course of a career that dates back to 1994, he has been a force of to be reckoned with on the guitar, and his tempestuous, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head, tattooed arms, a goatee and a performance style he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson," Popa Chubby is an endearing character who is one of the genre’s most popular figures. Popa Chubby,Baby Put On Your Mask,"""Tinfoil Hat"""Popa Chubby,You Aint Said Shit,"""Tinfoil Hat"""makingascene,Popa Chubby,Popa Chubby,No Justice No Peace,"""Tinfoil Hat"""Popa Chubby,Another Day In Hell,"""Tinfoil Hat"""

The 265th Roadhouse is all over the map; from Texas to the West Coast, Chicago to New York, it's the universality of the blues that brings more than 10,000 of us together weekly in the dark little club we call The Roadhouse. Kirk Fletcher, Popa Chubby, Mannish Boys, Nick Moss, and Kilborn Alley Blues Band bring new blues that touch the past and reach for the future. It's another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 265th Roadhouse.
