The ALL NEW Big Wakeup Call with Ryan Gatenby

Send us a textLegendary agent and producer Shep Gordon discusses his book THEY CALL ME SUPER MENSCH (From 9-21-16).It started with a punch from Janis Joplin. It was 1968 and Shep Gordon had quit the job that had brought him to L.A. after only one day. He had about a month's worth of cash in his pocket when he checked into a Hollywood motel. The first night, he tried to “rescue” a girl he thought was in distress. That was Janis, who punched him in the mouth. With the kind of serendipity that would mark the next five decades in a remarkable career, Gordon's life as a legendary manager, agent, and producer was launched. Famous among the famous, Gordon came to wider public attention through Mike Myers's “shagadelic rock doc” Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. Now, in THEY CALL ME SUPERMENSCH: A Backstage Pass to the Amazing Worlds of Film, Food, and Rock'n'Roll, this charismatic original tells his own version of his rollicking, good-spirited life story.

This episode was recorded and released in Feb 2021.   Who is Shep Gordon? You've probably heard the popular phrase "Chefs Are The New Rockstars" — you can thank Shep for that.  He's the visionary who brought chefs like Roger Vergé, Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, Roy Yamaguchi and Daniel Boulud to the mainstream and coined the term “Celebrity Chefs.” Coming from a colorful life as a music manager to artists like Alice Cooper, Luther Vandross, Blondie and Teddy Pendergrass to name a few, Shep brought his show business know-how to the culinary arts where he singlehandedly paved the path for chefs to become today's cultural icons. Shep Gordon is a legendary talent manager (he manages Alice Cooper and has done since 1968), film agent, producer, and was the subject of Mike Myers' directorial debut, the 2013 documentary, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. As well as managing household names such as Blondie, Eddie Pendergrast, Luther Vandross, to name but a few, the other thing to know about Shep is that he was (according to Emeril Lagasse) single-handedly responsible for creating the concept of ‘celebrity chef'. But, says Shep, none of this was by chance, his destiny was the result of taking action, of using a bit of knowledge and compassion where he could, to get to where he wanted to go. And considering he's cooked for the Dalai Lama, and credits as his mentor (and the man who changed his life), renowned chef, Roger Vergé, he's definitely gone far. From writing Buffalo, NY, history while high, to microdosing, to making Alice Cooper a global superstar, don't miss Shep Gordon's story, in his own words, on this episode of Into The Magic Shop. “I used to look every client in the eye and I'd say, if I do my job perfectly, I will probably kill you. Luckily for you, I'm not perfect. But I'm really good. So you will be maimed. That's the price, you're going to pay for this. You are going to be maimed. And they all laugh. But they all got maimed.”On today's podcast: Do the best you can in the moment Being a star is all about accepting rejection The benefits of microdosing Why Alice Cooper is the embodiment of a good Christian

The subject of the acclaimed Mike Myers-produced documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, Shep came to Los Angeles in 1968 and landed in the heart of rock and roll, instantly (and by sheer coincidence) falling in with Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and, a short time later, Alice Cooper, whom he continues to manage today.
