    Ivy Insights

The Lab Rat Chat podcast is an incredibly informative and engaging podcast that sheds light on the important field of animal research. As someone who works as a lab animal technician, I found this podcast to be both interesting and comprehensive. The guest speakers are knowledgeable and provide valuable insights into the work being done in this field. The hosts have done a great job in creating a space where experts can share their expertise while also being relatable and entertaining. I appreciate their efforts in educating the public about the work that is happening behind the scenes in animal research.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the level of detail and depth that each episode explores. The conversations with experts in the field provide an inside look into various aspects of animal research, from ethics to regulations to advancements in biomedical science. The podcast covers a wide range of topics, allowing listeners to gain a comprehensive understanding of the field. Additionally, the hosts do an excellent job in asking thoughtful questions and guiding the conversation, making it easy for listeners to follow along and learn.

However, one potential downside of this podcast is that it may not appeal to everyone. While those interested or working in biomedical research or animal care will find this podcast highly informative, others may not have as much interest in these topics. Additionally, some episodes may contain technical terminology or scientific jargon that could be challenging for listeners without a background in these areas.

In conclusion, The Lab Rat Chat podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in learning more about animal research and its impact on biomedical science. The hosts have created an engaging platform where experts share their knowledge and insights. From ethical considerations to advancements in medicine, this podcast covers it all. Despite potential limitations for those outside of the scientific community, this podcast serves as an invaluable resource for individuals looking to gain a better understanding of animal research.

Lab Rat Chat - Episode 27 with Dr. Christine LattinIn this episode of Lab Rat Chat, Danielle and Jeff chat with Dr. Christine Lattin, an assistant professor at Louisiana State University.   She conducts incredible research using birds as a model to help our understanding of stress and how different neurotransmitters and hormones help wild animals successfully cope with challenges, from predators to disease.  Dr. Lattin's research will advance our understanding of how these hormone and neurotransmitter pathways work in humans as the pathways are very similar amongst all vertebrae species.  We also discuss an extensive and uncalled-for attack campaign by PETA on Dr. Lattin's research and personal life and how she's been able to continue to thrive and overcome these challenges.Topics discussed in this episode:Dr. Lattin's extensive and impressive background and her journey to get where she's at in her career today. Why and how birds are a critical model to use in order to understand her research interests. The future application of her research using birds and how it will be able to benefit humans and society. Why her research has been targeted by PETA, the extensive amount of work and money PETA has spent attacking her and her research, and how she's been able to adapt and overcome.Purchase Lab Rat Chat merch and help support our podcast and biomedical research!https://labratchat.myteespring.co/Sign up for the Lab Rat Chat newsletter!https://www.amprogress.org/raising-voices/lab-rat-chat/Resources & Links:What Makes Some More Afraid of Change than Others? This parasite cause toxoplasmosis and it can have devastating effects on humans, especially in pregnant women and to their unborn babies. Laura provides our listeners with some background information on this parasite, how to avoid it, and how her lab is able to conduct groundbreaking research with it utilizing a mouse model in the laboratory. Topics discussed in this episode:· Laura’s extensive background and experience throughout her education and career.· What exactly toxoplasmosis is, and why the public should be concerned about this parasite.· Laura’s incredible research helping to understand more about Toxoplasma gondii and ways to help those affected by it.· Alternatives to animal models and how Laura’s lab abides by the principles of refinement, reduction, and replacement to her research.Notable quote:“The public should be concerned because this is a really, really common parasite in humans. It is the reason pregnant women aren’t supposed to handle cats or cat litter, and it’s because toxoplasma has it’s sexual cycle limited to the feline intestine."“We were able to figure that out and take it one step further, because no one wanted to use cats in research. We were able to inhibit the enzyme in mice, and give them a linoleic acid rich diet and get the sexual cycle to occur in mice, and now the mice will poop out infectious oocysts just like the cat.”Sign up for the Lab Rat Chat newsletter!https://www.amprogress.org/raising-voices/lab-rat-chat/ Follow us on Twitter! So that’s why it seems like, in science, we’re sometimes changing our minds, but that’s because we gathered new information in a robust way.”Sign up for the Lab Rat Chat newsletter!https://www.amprogress.org/raising-voices/lab-rat-chat/Resources & Links:Texas Biomedical Research Institute (https://www.txbiomed.org/)Texas Biomed Humanized Mice Press Release (https://www.txbiomed.org/news-press/news-releases/sars-cov-2-rodent-study/)Americans for Medical Progress (https://www.amprogress.org/) Americans for Medical Progress COVID-19 Resources (https://www.amprogress.org/covid-19-resources/)All Lab Rat Chat episodes are edited by Audionauts: https://audionauts.pro/
