Key Takeaways We get humbled by our breakdowns in a very positive way. And breakdown is the beginning of breakthrough. If any of our viewers right now are in a breakdown, things aren't working or malfunctioning, screwed up, nasty or bad, that is to be celebrated. There's a thing that talks in your head that isn't you, it's biological. It just talks whether you want it to or not. Stop trying to solve problems through your agitation and start trying to solve problems through your alignment. Accept what you cannot change and to do something about what you can change. My recommendation is for the next 30 days, please just go on an opinion diet, see what happens. You can't separate me from what I'm attracting because I'm not attracting it. I am it. Lab Rat Chat - Episode 29 with Dr. Kyle FlippoIn this episode of Lab Rat Chat, Jeff chats with Dr. Kyle Flippo, PhD, who is a postdoc in the University of Iowa Neuroscience and Pharmacology Department.   He studies the role of endocrine signaling in the CNS in regulating metabolism, amongst other things.  One of his current research projects has explored the role of a hormone (FGF21) in suppressing alcohol consumption in monkeys. Not only is this promising for providing a treatment for alcohol use disorders, they've also found this hormone plays a major role in reducing sugar intake as well.  This research is really groundbreaking stuff and thankfully we have scientists out there like Dr. Flippo who works compassionately with laboratory animals to make these sorts of discoveries.Topics discussed in this episode:Dr. Flippo's extensive and impressive background and his journey to get where he's at in her career today. The prevalence of alcoholism in the United States and why Dr. Flippo decided to pursue this area of research. Why vervet monkeys are best suited to study alcohol addiction compared to rodents and why alternative models (e.g., organs on a chip, computer models, etc.) are not viable options. The future application of this research on the human populationPurchase Lab Rat Chat merch and help support our podcast and biomedical research!https://labratchat.myteespring.co/Sign up for the Lab Rat Chat newsletter!https://www.amprogress.org/raising-voices/lab-rat-chat/Resources & Links:A Molecule Tested in Higher Primates Reduced Alcohol Consumption By Half | Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (bbrfoundation.org)Americans for Medical ProgressAmericans for Medical Progress COVID-19 ResourcesFollow us on Twitter! In Elan Barnehama's new novel, Escape Route (Running Wild Press 2022), it's 1968 and 13-year-old Zach is about to become a bar mitzvah. That's when his sister changes his life by switching his radio from AM to FM. Zach's family lives in Queens, and he's comfortable roaming the New York City subways, heading to the public library, the Metropolitan Museum, and all kinds of diners. Zach is in accelerated classes, smart but confused. He worries about his older sister at Columbia, the war in Vietnam, his grandparents, and how his parents escaped Europe during the Holocaust. He meets a cute girl and is beyond relieved to have his first girlfriend, his first kiss. He thinks about music, math, religion, drugs, and more than anything else, baseball. He doesn't know when to stop asking annoying questions or irritating the people around him with his goofiness. And just in case there's another Holocaust and they have to leave the country; he joins the AAA auto club and figures out an “Escape Route.” Elan Barnehama grew up in Queens, NYC, has lived in several places on both coasts, and currently lives in Boston. He earned an MFA from UMass, Amherst, and a BA from Binghamton University. He writes literary fiction, flash fiction, and creative non-fiction, which has appeared in Drunk Monkeys, Entropy, Rough Cut Press, Boston Accent, Jewish Fiction, RedFez, HuffPost, the New York Journal of Books, Public Radio, and elsewhere. Barnehama was a Writer-In-Residence at Wildacres NC, and Fairhope Center for the Writing Arts in Fairhope, AL. He's the fiction editor at Forth Magazine LA, and at different times has taught college writing-currently at American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, worked with at-risk youth, had a gig as a radio news guy, coached high school baseball, and did a mediocre job as a short-order cook. When he's not reading or writing, Barnehama likes running and walking urban landscapes, travelling to see friends, seeing new places, coffee shops, diners, libraries, and public spaces. He remains a Mets fan. G.P. Gottlieb is the author of the Whipped and Sipped Mystery Series and a prolific baker of healthful breads and pastries. How Motivational Interviewing Helps Reduce Alcohol Use Problems in Young Adults: Session 158 with Jim Murphy

Rather than writing up a compelling introduction to this episode, I'm tempted to say, "just listen to the whole thing!" and leave it there. In Session 158, I chat with one of my oldest friends and Auburn classmate (obligatory "War Eagle!"), Dr. Jim Murphy from the University of Memphis, about the impossibly-broad topic of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). Fortunately for us, Jim has spent over 20 years studying this issue from Behavior Analytic/Behavioral Economic points of view, and he has developed an uncanny ability to discuss these complicated repertoires in easy to understand, everyday terms. As such, in this episode we cover the following: How the environment often plays a key role in substance use. Why the abstinence model for problem drinkers may not be the best fit for some individuals. Why the terms, "alcoholic," and "addict," are neither descriptive, nor helpful. Why we should be more concerned about binge drinkers. How alcohol increases social interactions. How certain age-ranges are at risk for binge-style use patterns. What is Motivational Interviewing, and how it can be used to address binge drinking. The differences in substance use patterns between young adults who do and don't go to college. How developing hobbies and other values-based activities can help curb problem drinking. What does the research say about Alcoholics Anonymous and similar 12-step programs, and in general, the pros and cons of these approaches. How using a Hypothetical Demand Curve analysis can be used to assess motivation to reduce drinking behavior. Why BCBAs should consider getting training in Motivational Interviewing. Jim was also kind enough to stick around after the interview for a few more minutes in the commercial-free Patreon feed. In this bonus segment, Jim shares his thoughts on drug legalization in America, particularly the legalization of cannabis. If you're interested in checking this out, as well as partaking in other Patreon-only benefits, check out patreon.com/behavioralobservations. Here are the links to the resources we discussed: Jim's page at The University of Memphis. Jim's Google Scholar page. Drunk Monkeys video. Rat Park study. Alcohol/Social Bonding experiment. Maureen Dowd's NYT column (2014; will make sense for those listening to the extended Patreon episode). Please permit me a few quick housekeeping notes: We had a few connection issues, so the audio fades in a few places, but I don't think it detracts from the overall content of the show. As with Session 157, this episode was recorded in December of 2020, so there may be a few time-based references that will seem out of sync... however, I don't think they have much bearing on the overall gist of the podcast. Brodie Hubbard, otherwise known as Hub, is a writer, storyteller, and performer from the Phoenix East Valley. He is also a husband and full time dad working from home since the beginning of the pandemic. In a past life, he was an English Lit major and also received an MFA in creative writing. He's from Arizona but did a stink in LA but ended up closer to home as he and his wife were growing their family. Hub talks about how he has engaged in work in a few different industries over the past decade and how having a family has changed some of his priorities. He continues to write but also started working with a local startup that has recently been acquired by a larger corporation in recent years. As with so many others, his office job was switched to a home office setup; and Brodie and his team have worked together to adjust their schedules to accommodate clients in various time zones and to also cover one another by flexing their schedules to accommodate some personal responsibilities such as caring for loved ones during the pandemic.
