We are studying Perek Shira and we are now up to our second creation that says Shira, and that is the Earth. We quote a pasuk that might not be so familiar, from Yeshaya 24,16 מִכְּנַ֨ף הָאָ֜רֶץ זְמִרֹ֤ת שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ צְבִ֣י לַצַּדִּ֔יק From the wing of the earth we have heard songs, do the will of the Righteous one. What does it mean that we heard songs from the wing of the Earth? Normally, songs come from the mouth, not from the wing. The Or HaChaim HaKadosh on Bamidbar 16,30 tells us that when the Gemara tells us that when Kayin sinned, it says, “ You're more cursed than the ground that had opened up its mouth.” The earth was punished because it swallowed the blood of Hevel and as a result the Earth's mouth was sealed and it could no longer sing a song like all other creatures. That's why it says, “ מִכְּנַ֨ף הָאָ֜רֶץ זְמִרֹ֤ת שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ / From the wing of the earth we heard songs,” as if it's making noise in other ways, like a bird might make noise with its wings, but not with its mouth. When Moshe Rabbenu wanted to punish Korach, he said, “ If a creation will create. ” What does that mean? If h creation was once there, he will recreate. There once was a mouth there, but the mouth got closed. “Reopen it now and let this mouth swallow up Korach.” The Or HaChaim HaKadosh says this was a tikun . The earth made a tikun because the first time it swallowed the blood of Hevel, who was a Sadik , צְבִ֣י לַצַּדִּ֔יק and now he'll swallow up the rasha Korach and that fixed the earth. The earth made a tikun . Parenthetically, it says that Moshe Rabbenu was a gilgul of Hevel. It says Moshe was a shepherd , once upon a time –meaning in the times of Hevel. And Kayin came back as Korach, who was jealous. that's why it says, “ Hashem says, Im Tetiv/If you do good, Se'et/You will lift,” you'll carry the Aron. And if you don't fix yourself, your sin will be waiting by the mouth/the opening, and you'll will be swallowed up by the earth. So here, on round two, the earth fixes its sin. Rather than swallowing up the blood of Hevel, he sticks up for Hevel and swallows up Korach, who is Kayin. Beautiful. What's our message? Again, in every one of these pesukim, there's a mussar as well. The mussar is that you can sin, and you can fix it. And we can once again sing to Hashem, even though we might have lost the ability to sing. That's the first beautiful point on this pasuk. Beautiful point number two is that (again, the earth now is being used as praiser) it says that when Sanheriv's army was wiped out, miraculously, Hizkiyah was supposed to be Mashiach. He was a devout sadik and a Baal bitachon . He went to sleep at night and God brought the miracle, and he was supposed to become Mashiach. But the Middat HaDin/Justice said, David Hamelech said so many songs and he wasn't Mashiach, and this king Hizkiyah had this miracle and didn't sing afterwards and You're going to make him Mashiach? Therefore, he did not become Mashiach. At that point, the Earth said, “I will replace his song, I'll sing instead of him, and please make him Mashiach. That's what it means, מִכְּנַ֨ף הָאָ֜רֶץ זְמִרֹ֤ת שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ צְבִ֣י לַצַּדִּ֔יק Please make the Sadik Hizkiyah into Mashiach. But it didn't work. It was too late. But the earth did try to stick up for the Sadik and sing a song. We can, once again, reignite this Mashiach-like happening. The Tosafot in Sanhedrin brings down from the Teshuvot HaGeonim that the Bnei Yisrael only say Kedusha on Shabbat. Based on this Tosafot , we all have a different type of Kedusha in our Shabbat Amida, whatever community you come from. Why? Because the pasuk tells us that the angels have six wings, and every wing corresponds to a different day of the week where they sing a song with that wing. Come Shabbat, there's no wing. So, God says, I have another wing that will create song for me. That's the מִכְּנַ֨ף הָאָ֜רֶץ /the wing that's down here on earth. That's the seventh wing. And that's the day of Shabbat. זְמִרֹ֤ת שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ when we'll hear the songs from the Jewish people. That's the source that we sing songs on Shabbat, and on Shabbat we are elevated to be higher than the angels. The angels ran out of wings and we, the Jewish people, sing the songs of Shabbat. That's our opportunity to, so to say, bring a Messianic time. Shabbat is Me'en Olam Haba. On Shabbat, we evoke this force of the songs of the earth. Finally, one last beautiful piece: The Chida on his sefer Kikar LaAden ( siman ה ) has a commentary on Perek Shira, he brings there from Rav Shimshon Ostropoli, the following explanation. It says in Pirkei D'Rav Eliezer there that there are five letters that are called Sophiot – מנצפך - it spells Mansepach And it says, these are letters of Geula/redemption. You might have seen this concept when banging the Aravot five times according to the Sephardic custom. And it says, each time you bang, have one of these letters in mind. And we'll see in a moment why. It says Avraham Avinu said Lech Lecha, ל ך ל ך He had 2 ך s Yitzhak Avinu said ‘ כי עצמת מ מנו מ אד / You become much stronger than us, a phrase with two Mems Yaakov Avinu said, ה צלי נ י נ א /Save me, with two Nuns . And in Mitzrayim it says פ קד פ קדתי , with two Pehs . In the future we're going to have two Sadi's because it says איש צ מח י צ מח /the man of Semah, which is the Mashiach, will grow- there's the two sadis . So that's what we say, מִכְּנַ֨ף הָאָ֜רֶץ זְמִרֹ֤ת שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ /We already heard the songs of the Mem the Chaf , the Nun and Peh .. צְבִ֣י לַצַּדִּ֔יק /We're looking forward to Sadik . We're looking forward to hear the Sadik , the Sadi letter that's going to bring the final Geula-And the earth is going to sing that. So this pasuk refers to Geula, Geula comes from singing songs and it connects itself to Shabbat. Another beautiful thought on this pasuk. And once again, we are fulfilling that we're involving ourselves in in-depth learning of Perek Shira. Have a wonderful day.

Daily Bitachon

Today's pasuk is the first of a new unit in the list from the Maharal called Pesukeh Chisayon/refuge. We finished the pesukei bitachon and we are now onto those that mention the word chisayon/refuge. Hashem is my Rock and my fortress, and my rescuer, my God, my rock in whom I take shelter. My shield, and the horn of my salvation; my stronghold. These are all words describing tremendous strength and fortitude. They aren't necessarily describing that he clearly relies on Hashem, but that Hashem is a great protection for him. We invoke this pasuk every morning in our prayers where we say in Shaharit, in the Beracha of Yotzer , Eloheh Avraham /God of the world, in Your great mercy… and we go on to describe God, Adon Uzenu/the God of our strength, Sur/the rock Misgabenu/of our fortress , Magen Yishenu/the shield of our salvation . Misgav BAdenu/the One who is our fortress in protection , and the Avudarham says that this Tefila is based on this pasuk of David Hamelech. So, every day we mention how God has this special power over us. David Hamelech uses many terms, but we're just going focus on one of them, which is Suri . God is my rock . Sali , also means My rock. What is this about the rock that David Hamelech is mentioning? Simply, it's a metaphor. God is like a rock that He saved me . But Rashi tells us he's referring to a specific incident in the story in Shemuel א ,perek 23. David Hamelech was hiding behind a mountain and the people of Shaul were surrounding the mountain, getting closer and closer to him. He did not know where to go. Then, just at that moment, An angel came to Shaul . He looked like a human but he was actually an angel from God, say the commentaries, who said, ‘ Mahara/go fast. You have to move now. It's not time for a local dispute between you and David. It's not time for an internal issue. We have a massive Pelishtim attack at the border. You have to refocus your army.' When Shaul heard that, he left, at the last moment and he went to the Pelishtim. They called that rock, Selah Hamachlekot/the Rock of the Argument. The Radak, quoting from the Targum, explains that there was an argument between Shaul and his men. They were passionate; they were so close to getting David. But Shaul, the king, said, “ No, our responsibility is to the country.” They therefore left, and David Hamelech was saved. That's why David Hamelech said, “ God is my Selah/my rock, referring to the rock where they had this argument. How is this relevant to us? It's extremely important. If David Hamelech did not tell us this story, we would never have known about how this angel got involved in saving him. God is our protection . The word מחסי Machsi , Rashi says, we translate as refuge . The Chet and Chaf are interchangeable. It also means אכסה Echseh/ He's my cover. Kisoy is a cover . God covers me. He covers me up when I, or things about me, shouldn't be seen. God covers up for me. Something like this happened to someone I know recently. A man told me he was driving on the Verrazano Bridge one night, coming back from Deal, admittedly speeding. (He shouldn't speed. It was a mistake. He wasn't paying attention. It was late at night and the roads were open and he was going way over the speed limit. We're not condoning his actions.) The officer pulled him over and took his license. The man said, “ Hashem, I can't afford a ticket now. I can't afford points. En Od Milevado. I'll never do it again. You're in charge. I'm sorry I made a mistake. And Hashem, you can make anything happen.” Normally they take your license and registration for around 10 minutes. But literally seconds later, the cop came back to the car and said, “ You're a lucky man. I just got a call on my radio. There was a shooting (or robbery) not far from here. I have to leave. Don't speed again.” So, Hashem can send that angel. In this case, it wasn't an open angel, but there are situations that we'll never know about. Of course, we try to be honest and do everything right, but they could check anyone's taxes and they'd get in trouble. Who knows if they were looking to audit somebody and then some angel of God came and asked the guy to get a cup of coffee and he went to the next file and skipped your file… we don't know. But we have to understand how Hashem is always protecting us. And that's this pasuk. Hashem Sali/He's my rock, David Hamelech used this to remind himself of the miracle of the rock. These are beautiful, beautiful messages and lessons hiding in these pesukim. יְהֹוָ֤ה ׀ סַ֥לְעִ֥י וּמְצוּדָתִ֗י וּמְפַ֫לְטִ֥י אֵלִ֣י צ֭וּרִי אֶֽחֱסֶה־בּ֑וֹ מָֽגִנִּ֥י וְקֶֽרֶן־יִ֝שְׁעִ֗י מִשְׂגַּבִּֽי׃ Hashem is my Rock and my fortress, and my rescuer, my God, my rock in whom I take shelter. My shield, and the horn of my salvation; my stronghold. The rabbis tell us the best time to remember these is in our prayers. Make a little mark on your siddur. I have a dear friend, who, anytime he hears a nice thought on the siddur, he puts it into his siddur and boosts his kavana . So tomorrow morning, remember- Sur Misgabenu/ God is my Rock , the rock of my protection. Magen Yishenu/ He's my shield. By remembering these concepts, we will earn Hashem's special protection.

A Firstborn Son's Rights to a Double Portion in the Inheritance

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The Torah establishes in the Book of Devarim (21:17) that a father must "recognize" ("Yakir") the distinction of his firstborn son by awarding him a double portion in the inheritance. Thus, for example, if a man had three sons, after his death his estate is divided into four portions, two of which are awarded to the firstborn; each of the other two sons then receives one of the remaining two portions. Interestingly enough, the Hebrew word "Bechor" ("firstborn") itself alludes to this Halacha. This word consists of the three letters "Bet," "Chaf" and "Resh," which have the respective numerical values of 2, 20 and 200 – all of which signify the notion of "double." This Halacha applies only if the deceased's first child is male and born naturally (not cesarean.) If his oldest child is a daughter, then the oldest son does not have the status of "Bechor" and does not receive a double portion of the inheritance. Furthermore, this Halacha only applies to the first born of the father, not the mother. The right of the firstborn to a double portion does not apply if the father died, Heaven forbid, before the oldest son's birth. Meaning, if a woman conceived with twins and her husband passed away during pregnancy, the estate is divided evenly between the two twins. As mentioned earlier, the Torah presents the law of the firstborn's double portion with the word "Yakir," which means to "recognize" or "know." This term alludes to the fact that a firstborn receives a double portion only if his father "knew" him," to the exclusion of a tragic case of a firstborn whose father passed away before his birth. If one's oldest child is a son but he was born after a miscarriage, he is nevertheless considered a "Bechor" with respect to this Halacha. Even though a firstborn son after a miscarriage does not require a Pidyon Ha'ben (the symbolic "redemption" of a firstborn son from a Kohen), he is deemed a Bechor as far as inheritance is concerned. A firstborn son thus receives a double portion even if he was born after a miscarriage or several miscarriages, and even if he was born after a stillborn child (or several stillborn children), Heaven forbid. These Halachot apply only in cases where no will was written, and thus the deceased's estate is distributed automatically in accordance with the system prescribed in the Torah. We do not discuss here the issue of if and how one can circumvent these laws by drawing up a will during his lifetime. Summary: When a father's naturally (not caesarean) firstborn child is a son, he receives twice as large a share in his father's estate as his brothers. This applies even if the firstborn was born after a stillborn or miscarriage. It does not apply in a case of a man who dies while his wife was pregnant with twins; since he died before the birth of his firstborn son, the son does not receive a double portion. See the book- "Pure Money" by Dayan Cohen, pages 222-223. See Hoshen Mishpat, siman 276.

Parashat Tesaveh- Olives and Olive Oil

Insight of the Week

Many commentators noted that Parashat Tesaveh is unusual, in that Moshe Rabbenu's name does not appear anywhere in this Parasha. It is one of the only Parashiyot since the account of Moshe's birth (in Parashat Shemot) that omits his name. The explanation given is that after the sin of the golden calf, G-d decided to annihilate Beneh Yisrael and create a new nation from Moshe, but Moshe interceded on the nation's behalf. He demanded that G-d forgive the people, adding, “…and if not, then erase me from Your book which You have written” (Shemot 32:32). A righteous person's words are so powerful that they have an impact even when spoken on condition – and therefore, although G-d indeed forgave Beneh Yisrael, Moshe's demand to be “erased” was fulfilled in some way, through the omission of his name from Parashat Tesaveh. The question naturally arises as to why Parashat Tesaveh was selected as the Parasha through which Moshe's plea would be fulfilled. What is unique about Parashat Tesaveh that Moshe's name was omitted specifically from this piece of text? One possibility is proposed by the Hida (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806), who noted that Moshe asked G-d to “erase” him from “Sifrecha” (“Your book”). This word could be read as a combination of the word “Sefer” and the letter “Chaf,” which in Gematria equals 20. Meaning, Moshe asked to be “erased from the 20 th “book” – and Parashat Tesaveh is the 20 th Parasha in the Torah. Therefore, his name is omitted from this Parasha. There may, however, be an additional explanation. Parashat Tesaveh begins with the command that pure olive oil be provided for the kindling of the Menorah in the Mishkan. The Gemara makes an enigmatic comment about olives and olive oil, teaching that eating olives has the effect of compromising one's ability to retain his Torah knowledge, whereas consuming olive oil has the precise opposite effect, enhancing one's ability to remember the Torah that he learns. The holy books explain the meaning behind this Talmudic teaching. An olive contains its oil within it, and thus represents the student of Torah who keeps his Torah knowledge for himself, without sharing it with others. Olive oil is what the olive has shared with the world, by allowing itself to be crushed. Hence, olive oil symbolizes the person who shares his Torah with other people. Scholars might be reluctant to teach because this takes precious time away from their own growth and development. The Gemara here instructs that to the contrary – it is specifically the “olive,” the person who keeps his Torah to himself, refusing to invest time and effort to teach, who is prone to forgetting what he has learned. But a person who resembles olive oil, who humbly takes the time to share his precious knowledge with other people, is guaranteed to be rewarded with the ability to retain the material he studies, despite the sacrifice he makes for the sake of teaching other people. The first time the olive is mentioned in the Torah is the story of Noah, who sent a dove to determine whether the waters had subsided after the flood. The dove returned with an olive branch, informing Noah that indeed, the world had again become habitable. In light of what we have seen, we could explain the significance of the olive in the story of Noah. The prophet Yeshayahu (54:9) refers to the flood as “Meh Noah” – “the waters of Noah,” and the Zohar explains that Noah is blamed for the flood because he did not pray to G-d to save the generation. The Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria, Safed, 1534-1572) taught that Noah's soul was reincarnated in the person of Moshe Rabbenu so that this mistake could be rectified. Moshe achieved this rectification when he petitioned G-d on behalf of Beneh Yisrael following the sin of the golden calf. In direct contrast to Noah, who made no attempt to save his generation, Moshe appealed to G-d to save Beneh Yisrael, going so far as to declare that he was prepared to be “erased” together with them. Appropriately, then, Noah is presented with an olive branch, a symbol of his failure to concern himself with the needs of others, and focusing on his own wellbeing. Moshe, by contrast, embodied the message of olive oil, the notion of sharing one's blessings, and looking out for others. Therefore, in Parashat Tesaveh, the Parasha which speaks of the olive oil used for the Menorah, Moshe's name is omitted, expressing his selflessness and boundless concern for others, the way he was never concerned only with himself, but rather looked out for the needs of the people he led.

Parsha with Rabbi David Bibi
Protection during the three weeks and all year - Pinchas

Parsha with Rabbi David Bibi

A Segulah for Protection Theportion of Pinchas includes the readings of all of the holidays of the year. The renown Gaon and MeKubal , Rabbi Chaim Palagi in his sefer Refuah VeChaim12/46 – (Healing and Life) brings an incredible segulah. The Rabbi explainsthat the reading of these perekin 28 and 29 is a protection against judgment, andspecifically with regard to court and legal cases especially from the nationsof the world. Whowas this great Rabbi: Rabbi Chaim Palagi was a prolific author. Seventy-two ofhis works are known, but it also is known that some of his manuscripts were destroyedin the great fire which struck Izmir in 1841. Every time R' Palaji published anew book, he made a festive meal and ate a new fruit, on which he would recitethe blessing of 'She'he'cheyanu Inone of his works, R' Palagi describes his own life as follows: I call heavenand earth to testify that from the age when I could control my faculties untilI was 20, I used to devote myself single-mindedly to Torah study, day andnight, with no wasted time. I had no involvement with worldly matters. From age20 to age 40, when my children were dependent on me, I dealt with worldlymatters as a broker. Nevertheless, whenever I had no work, I did not turn tofrivolity and wasteful things, but rather I returned to my studies. From age40, when I was appointed to be a rabbinical judge and teacher and to handlematters of concern to the public, until this day, there is not a minute when Iam not surrounded by litigants or by public affairs. These matters come bothfrom this city and its environs, and also various decrees of the governmentkeep me busy with matters affecting the public. Therefore my heart worrieswithin me that I do not spend sufficient time studying. I, therefore, forcemyself to use the limited time that I have for studying, and may others see meand do the same; may they learn from me that when distractions come along, whether they come from public or private matters -- for one's eyes and heartsearch for a spare moment -- that spare time, when it comes, should not bewasted. If one lives thus, his Torah studies will be blessed. R' Palagi's son wrote of him: His behaviorwith his family and the excellence of his character traits in dealing with themwas unique in the world. He never became upset about any household issue; tothe contrary, he always made peace overtures. He never became upset at thechildren's noise. He used to call them to him each morning to recite themorning blessings, and they prayed out loud. Very patiently, every day, heperformed the mitzvah of 'You shall teach them to your children.' Hewould instruct his children in fearing Hashem . . . and never to make fun ofany person. Once, a member of his household offended another person, and he[i.e., R' Palagi] did not rest until that person had been appeased. A number oftimes, he even gave money to a person who had been offended. Acouple of weeks ago, a friend who is dealing with issues exaggerated againsthim by seemingly overzealous government employees asked about a Kameyah writtenand segulot which might come to assist in his defense against these malevolentforces. As these subjects are way above my rabbinical paygrade, I spoke withsome rabbis who frequent these worlds to understand the power behind thekameyah and suggested some tefilot and actions to add. I also employed mybrother Victor who I can depend on to always explain to me difficult tounderstand kabbalistic concepts and he too gave me some tools. Earlier thisweek Victor was excited to share the words of Rabbi Chaim Palagi as recalled byRabbi Daniel Gladstein from the Sefer quoted above. Itis our custom every day to begin Mincha with Lamnaseyach and before the ketoretto recite the first 8 verses from Bamidbar Chapter 28 recalling the dailingTamid offerings. In another sefer, Moed LeKol Chai, Rav Palagi mentions that itwas his own custom to not stop at 8 pesukim but to continue at mincha gedolahto read these two chapters in full beginning with Shabbat through the 21 daysof holidays culminating with the sacrifices brought each day of sukkot, the 70offerings brought on behalf of the 70 nations. Rabbi Palagi who dealt withgovernment entities each day explained that through the reading of theseofferings, there is a reduction in spiritual power against us for thosenations. He continues and he elucidates that anyone who has a claim againstthem from the nations of the world, whether a government or court should employthis method as a segulah to protect themselves. TheRabbi brings a story of a man would been incarcerated on an inflated charge inIzmir, and he suggested to the man to read every single day in the afternoonprayer these two chapters. Thisoccurred during the month of Elul and miraculously and without explanation, theman was released on Sukkot. Thepower of these verses is not limited to Sukkot and in fact during our period ofben hametzrim they can be a very commanding protection activating theincredible power hidden within this portion of Pinchas. Reading of a portioninfluences the time of the year, especially now when we go into this difficultperiod of the three weeks when we caution against court cases againstadversaries. Hashem brings this to assist us. Continuingon this path, if we examine the reading in this portion where we see thelisting of all of the holidays, we see in the chumash that between all of theholidays, there is the letter samach. For example between Passover andShevauot, there is a samach and between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur and YomKippur and Sukkoth through each day of the festival, but between the new yearand the day of atonement there is a letter S and then another one before thefestival of booths . But between Shavuot and Rosh Hashana there is only a Peh,take a look and ask why? What could bethe significance of this? TheApter Rav suggests that this period of Ben HaMesarim which we call the threeweeks is comprised of 21 days, relating to the 21 holidays we mention in thesechapters of Pinchas. They are Shabbat, Rosh Hodesh, Pesach(7), Shavuot, RoshHashana (2), Yom Kippur and Sukkot (8). And there is a reason in reading aboutthem at the start of this period. Thehint in the word ACH, we say Ach Tov – just good. The good for Yisrael is inthe Ach, which has the numerical equivlent Aleph and Chaf of 21. Tov of goodcan be found in these 21. And these 21 holidays are rooted in the 21 days ofthe Three Weeks. Soone must ask a question, why would all our holidays all be rooted in the 21days of Ben HaMesarim? Wemust remind ourselves of what Rabbi Abittan taught. These 21 days should'vebeen a very special period. We recall that the day Moses came down with theluchot was the 17th of Tammuz. That should have been an incredible holiday. Andthe day the spies returned and we could've made the decision to go marchinginto the land was the ninth of Av. We reversed the dynamic of these days. Wecut the wires holding incredible power and turned the great spiritual energyinto great spiritual danger. But the potential remains. RabbiGladstein also suggested that all of the fast days represent the root of theDavidic dynasty. We are taught that the Mashiach was born on the ninth of Av.And the 17th of Tammuz is the wedding night of Ruth and Boaz when theconception of Oved occurred. We also have the 10th of Tevet, 9 months prior tothe 9th of Av, as the conception date of the Mashiach. These21 days are really festive days at a higher plane, but because of our actions,we have dimmed them and we await the reconnection of the wires, the restorationof that energy and light that will transform these 21 days of mourning to 21days of a festival of joy. And the greatest holiday will be the one on the ninthof Av. Therefore,as we begin these 21 days, it is important to read about the 21 days ofholiness. TheBenai Yissaschar asked, why do we (other than in a leap year) always double upthe last two portions Matot and Masei of the book of Numbers? Why not double upthe two portions of Chukat and Balak as we read last week in order to catch upwith Israel? He answers that it's important for us to read the portions ofPinchas, Matot and Masei now as they discuss the distribution of the land ofIsrael especially during this time when we read about or we live through theaspect of exile. Andas we explained in the class we posted earlier this week, “Incapacitating theAngel of Death”, we have to remember that Pinchas as explained by Rabbi PinchasFriedman, is Eliyahu and Eliyahu will announce the coming of the messiah. Thiswas also the claim Moses made against Hashem at the burning bush, shelach beyadtishlach, when he told Hashem to send instead, Eliyahu, who would usher in thefinal redemption as Moses did not want to be the guy to bring in a halfredemption. Hashemalways gives us the cure before bringing the malady. We can suggest thatPinchas is the cure being Eliyahu, which we read at the outset of the threeweeks in order to show us as we go into the three weeks that the cure isalready there, and Eliyahu is waiting for us, and we just need to bring thecure. Thenwe have the distribution of the land, showing us that, even though we are in aperiod where we recall the exile, and we are living within this very longexile, just as the land was distributed for us back then, the land is for useven now, and into the future. Andfinally, we can allude to the 21 days of holidays that are mentioned as the 21days of holidays we have, and the source for those 21 holidays and the factthat these 21 days Ben HaMEsarim, will be transformed into a great holidayculminating with, the great festivity of The new Tisha BeAv Returningto our original question where we asked why there is a Samach between all ofthe holidays with the exception of between Shavuot and Rosh Hashana, we canthat Hashem reserved for us another holiday to fit into that time slot betweenJune and September, and that is the 21 day holiday to be re-introduced into thesystem, leatid lavoh. We've mentioned often that the original plan was to havea holiday each month and when we messed it up with the Golden Calf and with theSpies, everything got pushed. But we are hoping that with the imminent arrivalof Mashiach we will be blessed to celebrate these 21 days in joy together withthe rebuilding of the Mikdash speedily in our days. ShabbatShalom DavidBibi

Ahavat Yisrael
Hoshana Raba- Fix Your Lips

Ahavat Yisrael

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2022

This Saturday night is Hoshana Raba, which is connected to Achdut . Rav Yerucham Olshin, in his Sefer Yerach L'Moadim (page 533) explains a fascinating concept. In Parashat Ki Tetzeh (21/13) the Torah tells us about the Yefat Toar, וּבָ֥כְתָ֛ה אֶת־אָבִ֥יהָ וְאֶת־אִמָּ֖הּ She cries over her father and her mother. The Zohar tells us that this is symbolic of the Jewish people doing teshuva , crying in the month of Elul. The father refers to God and the mother refers to Knesset Yisrael, which literally means the gathering of the Jewish people . The Sefer Shelah HaKadosh explains that although the Jewish people down in this world look like they're separate, in the heavens above, in the secret of their souls, they're really united and they're one. So when there's a separation down here amongst Jews, it impacts a separation in the heavens above. As such, there are two aspects of teshuva. One is to fix the sins that impact on our relationship with God, and the other is to fix the sins that cause of the separation between the Jewish people. He says that the first 10 days are Aseret Yeme Teshuva, but there are another 10 days from after Yom Kippur to Hoshana Raba. The first 10 days are to work on our disconnect with God, and the second 10 are to work on the disconnect from man to man. This continues the theme of unity that we've been talking about until now, with the Lulav and Etrog , Aravot and Hadassim that symbolize unity, and also the Succah- as we mentioned, the whole Jewish people could fulfill their obligation with one Succah. He adds a beautiful thought: on Hoshana Raba, which is the final judgment day, we bang the Aravot because symbolize the lips. What do the Aravot have to do with lips? Mainly, we are talking about fixing the divisiveness among the Jewish people, which is all about Sinat Hinam , and the Chafetz Chaim says that the main cause of Sinat Hinam is Lashon Hara. Therefore, our job on Hoshana Raba is to fix our lips. That's the Aravot . And as we mentioned in the past, we are supposed to bang the “lips” on the ground. If someone says something that bothers you, what should you do? Put dirt in your mouth, put a cork in your mouth. Don't respond. That's the fixing of the lips. And he brings down a beautiful thought from the Gaon of Vilna. There are different areas where our speech is made- we pronounce things with our teeth, with our lips, with our palate, and our throats ( the tongue is in a separate category as it's the main part). The letters that come out of the teeth are Zayin, Samech, Shin and Resh. Then we have letters that come from the lips. Bet, Vav, Mem and Peh . Then we have the letters that come from the Palate-the Gimmel, Yud, Chaf, and Kuf . The Alef, Heh, Chet and Ayin come from the throat. (The tongue letters are Daled, Tet, Lamed, Nun and Taf ) He says that the word Succah has a letter from the four enabler units. It has a Samech from the teeth letters, It has a Vav from the lip letters. It has a Chaf from the palate letters and the Heh from the throat letters. The point is that we're trying to fix the different parts of the body that are involved in speech. Because, again, the main theme of Succot is to fix the divisiveness that's comes from speech. One last little tidbit is that on Shabbat Mincha we say Atah Echad V'Shimcha Echad, Umi K'Amcha, Goy Echad B'Aretz. You are One, Your Name is One, and who is like your people Israel, A unique nation on earth? Why do we say this on Shabbat? One explanation is that when the Jewish people are goy echad b'aretz/when we are united, then it brings about that Hashem Echad U'Shmo Echad. Since Shabbat Mincha is a time that symbolizes Mashiach's times, that is why we talk about that concept. (There are three Shabbats, that we've mentioned in the past- the Shabbat of creation, the Shabbat of Torah, and the Shabbat of Mashiach). The Shabbat of Mincha is the Shabbat of Mashiach, so we talk about the Jewish people being united. That will bring about the Oneness of God and the Oneness of His Name. So B'Ezrat Hashem, we will dedicate ourselves, this Shabbat and the following Sunday, to being cognizant and introspective of the concept of Lashon Hara and B'Ezrat Hashem that will give us a good final judgment. Have a wonderful day, Shabbat shalom and a pitka tava , which means a good note because the notes are given out on the judgment day of Hoshana Raba. All the best.

Succah Unity

Rav Chaim Pilaggi, in his sefer Moed L'Kol Chai ( chapter 20) discusses a beautiful concept connecting Ahavat Yisrael to the holiday of Succot , quoting from a rabbi called Lachmei Todah . He says that the Succah symbolizes unity, because it comes to remind us of the clouds of glory that engulfed the entire Jewish people and carried them as one unit . And that's why it says, “ The entire Jewish people can sit in the Succah.” The Gemara learns from this that technically, if you have a large enough Succah, the entire Jewish people could fulfill their obligation in one Succah. This hints at the unity factor of the Succah. Additionally, when the word Succah , is spelled סכה (without a Vav ) using the concept of Mispar Katan( reducing the number to its lowest value) , then the ס Samech which is 60, becomes a 6. כ Chaf ( usually 20) becomes a 2 , and the ה Heh is 5. 6+2+5= 13, the numerical value of אחד Echad / One . Again, this shows us that the Succah symbolizes unity. And the Gemara in Masechet Avodah Zara says that at the end of time, the nations of the world will complain that they want an opportunity to prove their loyalty. God will says, “ I'll give you an easy mitzva. It's called a Succah. ”Why is that the one? Because it's something that they can't connect to. They cannot connect that concept of unity. The Gemara says that the reason it's called a Mitzvah Kallah , a light Mitzvah, is that it doesn't cost a lot. How can that be ? Succot cost a lot of money. But the answer is that since all the Jewish people could chip in together, it would cost less than a pruta per person, (a small amount of money), so it really doesn't cost anything. Rav Chaim Pilaggi adds (and this is always the rule) thar whenever we're supposed to reach a certain level, there's a bigger test. And therefore, Rav Chaim Pilaggi says that at this time of the year, there are a lot of Ahavat Yisrael challenges. ln his times, people would fight over getting Aliyot, Hoshanot, or Hataneh Torah. Or more commonly, neighbors would have difficulty getting along, complaining about the Succah blocking them etc. Therefore he says, it's a Mitzvah to tell people that it's a time to have salvalut/tolerance, and that it's a time to increase peace, as we say, “ God spreads the Succah of peace upon us and all the Jewish people .” Amen. Have a wonderful day and wonderful preparation for Succot.

Multiple rocket attacks from Gaza This morning there was dozens of mortar shells fired from the Gaza strip into Israeli territory but just now we're seeing yet another barrage. Two rockets have apparently struck Israeli territory near a kibbutz in the region and this mirrors a similar close-call this morning, when a mortar shell actually struck a children's kindergarten. 25 rockets fired overnight from Gaza Dr. Martin Sherman, Founder & Executive Director of the IISS speaking at ILTV Studio about the developments in Gaza while Israel retaliates but many are calling for more to be done. State reportedly set to indict Netanyahus Both Prime Minister Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, are facing a number of corruption allegations and now several of those police investigations appear to be coming to a head. We've just learned that state prosecutors are strongly leaning towards criminal indictments against the Prime Minister, for allegedly receiving nearly a million shekels worth of illicit gifts from his millionaire friends. Justice Minister pitches new reforms A tried-and-true mantra of most judicial systems is that those suspected of a crime must be considered innocent until proven guilty but for certain high-profile cases that play out in the public eye, the spotlight can make that a difficult ideal to uphold, and this is the basis of a new bill proposed by Israel's Justice Minister. The overwhelming majority of Jews celebrated the event - but there were some leaders who didn't. TIS explores what happened on that day and shares rare audio of Zeev Jabotinsky and Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook. and the "not to be missed" weekly Israeli music mix.

God’s Faithfulness in Seasons of Change [Ep 91]

Seasons of change are part of life. There’s no avoiding it. Sometimes the season can linger for much longer than we like. Other times it’s fairly brief. And as is common for almost everyone, change is hard to handle. The same goes for me. I’ve been away from the Christian Home and Family podcast and website for some time. You may have seen a few blog posts pop up here and there when something was on my heart, but the truth is that I’ve been anything but consistent. This episode of the jump-started podcast is aimed at explaining my absence and hopefully, I can also give you some idea of where I think this thing is headed in the future. Unexpected seasons of change and how to handle them If you’ve never been through an unexpected and significant season of change I can tell you, it’s something that throws your whole world off kilter. The things you thought you were supposed to be doing suddenly lose their place in the list of priorities. You have to restructure almost everything. At least that’s how it was for me. But I learned something powerfully important during my most recent time of change. I’d like to share it with you on this episode. Where is God when sudden and unexpected changes hit? When sudden unexpected changes come to significant areas of your life, things like your career - that was it for me - it can be very disheartening and disorienting. It’s easy to question God, to wonder where He is in the mess. It’s hard to believe but He’s right there, in the middle of the mess. In fact, He’s the one who’s making it - and for good purposes that you can’t see. You can hear how it happened to me and what I learned from it if you make the time to listen. I hope you will. Is radical faith for generations still on my radar? I started a podcast way back in 2012 (I think). The Christian Home and Family podcast - and it’s taken on many different forms since then - is something I still love and still want to promote. But I simply haven’t had the time over the past 3 or 4 years. But I THINK that is changing. So I’m giving it a go again. Here’s my approach and what I’m thinking. I hope you’ll get on board to help me challenge Christ-following parents to set their sights higher, to radical faith that lasts for generations. This episode is brought to you by... DRAGON SLAYER: BEGINNINGS - Book 1 in my Christian fantasy series. The reviews I'm receiving on this book are both encouraging and incredible. Believe it or not, lives are being changed by this work of fiction. You can get your copy at htttp://www.DragonSlayerBook.com Now, on with the podcast... OK, I agree, the title of this episode is a bit weird. I mean, who really WANTS to destroy the people they love? But the sad fact is that all of us do thing, say things, and neglect things that wind up being hurtful to the people we love the most - our families. And the way that I see people destroy their loved ones more than anything else is not what you might expect. It's not through physical violence. It's not by neglect. It's not by harmful teaching or education. It's with words.  When I was a kid there was a taunt we said to each other in an attempt to console ourselves when harsh words came our way. It was, "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never hurt me." It was and still is, a lie. Words can do at least as much lasting damage as any stick or stone. I still remember hurtful, untrue, vengeful things that have been said to me. Even trial things come to mind sometimes and give me reason to doubt myself, become discouraged, want to give up. I'm sure you have some similar experiences. Words are powerful, powerful tools for both good and evil. The Bible says, Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. (Proverbs 18:21) Death and life - those are two extremes, two different points on a continuum. One is what we all want, the other is what we all fear. And words have the power to produce both. So here's a point I want you to ponder, as a spouse and as a parent. DO YOU REALIZE THAT YOUR WORDS HAVE THAT KIND OF POWER? Do you recognize that your spouse and your children can be given life by your words, or that they can be destroyed by your words? That's a lot of power, for good or for evil. Let me ask you a follow-up question: WHAT KIND OF EFFECT ARE YOUR WORDS HAVING? Would the people in your home, your spouse and your kids, say that the typical type of words that come from your mouth are life-giving? Or would they say that what typically comes out of your mouth is destructive? Are the kinds of words you typically use words of encouragement, affirmation, or equipping? Or are they typically critical, negative, and pessimistic. Look at yourself, right now. Look at the relationships in your life. I'm not pushing this so hard because I want you to feel badly about yourself. I'm pushing this because every one of us is prone to self-deception. We don't see ourselves realistically. We don't really see how we truly effect others. I want you to step outside the bubble of self-deception and see yourself realistically. There are two reasons I'm encouraging you toward this kind of clarity about yourself... #1 - You'll be able to see yourself realistically SO THAT you can go to God in true sorrow over what you've done and what you've become. I know, that's a pretty heavy thing to say. But I say it that way for a reason. The Apostle Paul says it this way, For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. (2 Corinthians 7:10) Sorrow, or grief over what you've done and who you've become, is the first step toward change. It's where you have truly come to grips with your own sin and the damage it has done. Once you are there, you are ready to go on to the next step... #2 - You'll be able to go to God in repentance. Godly repentance is where you take your sorrow to God, asking for forgiveness and the power to change. It's where God takes your broken and contrite heart and begins to work His miracle of transformation in you as a person. So, here's the real question... HOW DO YOU FIND OUT THE EFFECT YOUR WORDS ARE HAVING? You have to ask the people who are most affected by your words. You've got to be brave enough to ask your family members for their honest, nothing-held-back assessment of your words. If you do, and if they're honest, you'll see a real picture of how your words are impacting them. When you do, make sure you respond well. You asked for the honest assessment and they were brave enough to give it, so make sure you use it to truly move toward godly sorrow and true repentance. Use their loving criticism to move toward becoming a source of life for them.  If you'd like to engage with me directly about this topic, please feel free to do so in the comments below. Believe it or not, lives are being changed by this work of fiction. You can get your copy at htttp://www.DragonSlayerBook.com Now, on with the podcast...   The more days of life I log on this planet, the more I come to realize that the way we humans perceive ourselves is foggy at best. There are all kinds of ways it happens, from over-confidence, to lack of confidence, and everything in between. Another example is that we tend toward being unable to see our sin and the consequences of it with any sort of clarity. We excuse things we shouldn't and condemn things in ourselves that God put there for His divine purposes. Living in a fog is no fun. And here's the sobering thing: Our kids live in the same fog of self-perception. Just like us, they don't see themselves rightly. They struggle with doubt, condemnation, pride, and a host of other things just like we do. We BOTH need the clarity that only the wisdom of God can provide... and that's where we are incredibly blessed. God Himself has promised that if we lack wisdom, there's an incredible resource at our disposal. Here's how the Bible states it... If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5) Do you realize how incredible that verse is, for you and your children? In my mind, it's one of the most amazing promises evergiven to us. Let's walk through it... 1 - GOD GIVES WISDOM. That is truly amazing. We don't have to stumble along in the fog of what we think and feel and believe. We have access to a wisdom that can cut through the fog. 2 - GOD GIVES WISDOM GENEROUSLY God is not stingy when handing out His wisdom. He gives it freely, generously, abundantly, to anyone who wants it. 3 - GOD GIVE WISDOM WITHOUT REPROACH When we go to God for wisdom, God is not going to chide us for not being smarter or for not having things figured out. He's simply going to give us what we ask for. 4 - ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS ASK FOR IT There's no outrageous pricetag on the wisdom of God. He WANTS His children to be wise (like He is). So He freely gives wisdom to us when we ask Him for it. SO HOW DO WE APPLY THIS INCREDIBLE PROMISE? 1 - Memorize James 1:5 as a family. Talk it over. Make sure everyone understands the amazing gift that God offers. 2 - Encourage everyone in the family to ask God for wisdom daily. Hold each other accountable. Make it a project you work on together. 3 - Follow up. Ask everyone how they're seeing God's wisdom come on line in their lives. Share your stories to give your kids examples of what it might look like. 4 - Don't let it die. Continue to talk about the importance of wisdom. Continue to pray for it as a family. Continue to trust God for the wisdom each of you need to see yourselves and God rightly, as you walk through life.   If you'd like to engage with me directly about this topic, please feel free to do so in the comments below. Believe it or not, lives are being changed by this work of fiction. You can get your copy at htttp://www.DragonSlayerBook.com Now, on with the podcast... [gn_divider] When I was a kid, I had a terrible habit. I bit my fingernails. It doesn't sound like such a bad habit, but it wasn't just the nails themselves, I bit the skin surrounding my finger nails. I even nibbled the skin on the tips of my fingers. My fingers looked like trees after a beaver had gotten a hold of them, little tooth marks everywhere. I remember trying to break that habit. It was extremely hard. Why? Because it was long-standing. I had begun my finger nibbling, probably around the time I was six years old, but I didn't try to break it until I was in my mid to late teen years. I was fighting ten years of physical repitition, psychological conditioning, absent-mindedness about the habit, and it wasn't easy. I tell you that story to illustrate the power of a habit. But you probably didn't need the illustration at all. Every one of us has been challenged by the need to kick a habit of one kind or another. Smoking, drugs, cursing, anger, criticism, pride... the list goes on and on, doesn't it? When we think of habits, we tend to think of the negative side of the subject, but I want to suggest to you that just like a bad habit starts young and becomes incredibly hard to break - a good habit can be built early, in the life of your children, and can serve them positively for their entire lives. SO WHAT KIND OF GOOD HABITS WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR KIDS (or yourself) DEVELOP? HERE'S TWO THAT I CONSIDER MOST IMPORTANT #1 - DAILY TIME WITH GOD Our family has been blessed by God to have the determination to build this habit into the lives of our kids, from the start. I see the fruit of our efforts in their lives. At the time of this recording, my three oldest children are young adults, one of them already married and a father (that makes ME Grand-pop!). The LORD led us to integrate daily time with the LORD into their lives from the time they were able to hold a book. The results have been nothing short of amazing. Today, each of them engages in their own relational time with the LORD in a genuine, life-giving way. It happens at least in part, because they started the habit of setting aside the time to be with the LORD, early in life. If you'd like to hear more about that, from their own lips, you can at ChristianHomeandFamily.com/73 #2 - GODLY ATTITUDES The scriptures are full of attitudes that are supposed to be true of believers in Christ. From generosity, to kindness, to humility, the scriptures make it clear that all of us are fully dependent on the Spirit of God to produce those things deep down in our souls. But as parents, we can have a significant impact on our children's growth in those areas from before the time they are born. Yes, I said from before the time they are born. So the first thing you should do is begin praying for God to fill them with His Spirit, so that they can then demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit. We began praying for each of our children the moment we knew my wife was pregnant. Once we knew if they were boy or girl (yes, we did find out), we gave them a name and began praying for them by name... all before they sucked in their first breath of oxygen. I believe it had a significant impact on who they are and God's work in their lives. Once they were born, we did a number of things to encourage godly attitudes. First, we made sure that we, the parents, were working on improving those attitudes in our own lives. If you preach one thing and do another, you'll find rebellion rising up in the heart of your kids. For more on that, see episode 70 of this podcast, at ChristianHomeandFamily.com/70. Next, we worked hard not to underestimate our kids' capacity for absorbing the truth of God. We read scripture to them, found scripture-filled children's music for them, and talked about what the songs and stories were saying. Parent's, don't underestimate the Spirit's power through the word of God. He is able to drench your child with Himself from an early age. John the Baptist was filled with the Spirit in his mother's womb (Luke 1:15). Why couldn't your child be significantly shaped by the Spirit from an early age too? Once our kids were old enough to carry on a conversation, no matter how elementary, we started practicing a number of additional things... [gn_list icon="icon: check-square-o" icon_color="#2f99ec"] We talked about desirable godly attitudes in positive terms. We pointed out people who were doing a good job at allowing the Spirit to produce His fruit. We read them stories of admirable Christians who could serve as role models. We discussed desired traits repeatedly, covering why the trait in question was so important and what God thought about the issue. We worked as a family to memorize scriptures that taught about the godly traits we were encouraging. Once they were old enough to understand the word "no" and what it meant (around 1 year old), we began requiring them to behave in godly ways, even applying discipline when needed, as the scriptures encourage parents to do. [/gn_list] Now don't misunderstand, we weren't heavy-handed or stern with our kids. Everything was drenched in love and acceptance, and taught in a spirit of dependence on God to help them do what they were expected to do. All of this was based on the belief that God will use our efforts as parents as some of the means by which He develops them into the people He wants them to be. My belief is that part of the effectiveness comes from getting our kids started down a path of thinking rightly about godly attitudes and actions, early in life. We're helping them, guiding them, with the help of the Spirit of God, to develop their own godly habits in the areas of thinking and behavior. Parents, take this issue seriously. Just like my nail-biting, your kids are GOING TO DEVELOP HABITS. Why wouldn't you want to proactively help them develop powerfully good ones?
