Please note that at times some of our episodes may contain stories that could be deemed confronting. Please read the episode blurb to determine if this episode is right for you. Mentally Fit EP began in 2014 with a collective vision to flip mental illness on its head; to create conversation about mental health and to focus on wellbeing and what is in our control. A group of 'go-getters' came together to create magic. Some of the key players being Kirsty Traeger, Angela Cordon, Jo Clark, Ash Lawrie, Penny Will, Leonie Green, Sue Berry and some of the Port Lincoln Rotary Club members. It started out as an idea to hold a Gala Ball to raise funds to run a program to empower people to take charge of their lives by educating, reducing stigma and up-skilling community members. The "Life is a Circus" Gala Ball was held in October, 2014, at the Port Lincoln Race Course. 10 years later, Mentally Fit EP follows the same vision and goals. The program organises and conducts workshops, this Podcast, community forums, guest speaking roles, courses, events and campaigns, among other things. Enjoy the trip down memory lane as Mick Traeger, Ash Lawrie, Lain and Emma chat about the last 10 years. What a journey! We give special mention to Kirsty Traeger and Jo Clark who are now no longer with us, earthside, but well and truly in our hearts. *This episode discusses anxiety and depression, which may be distressing to some listeners. Please take care when listening. Steven Johnson's life path was pretty ‘straightforward'. He did pretty well at school. Got some great bonus points, thanks to living in Port Lincoln, and enrolled in Uni. A story that sounds like so many other people. Steve soon realised the course he chose wasn't ‘right' for him and that was the beginning of his journey of choosing many different life paths. Life certainly involves many twists and turns. If you can change your mind, you can change your life. If you are concerned about someone who is struggling and finding it difficult to see their way out of mental challenges then we highly recommend Question. Persuade. Refer. *This episode discusses domestic violence, sexual assault, stillbirth and other topics which may be distressing to some listeners. Please take care when listening. This episode is a conversation with Rachel Sherry. With the world at her feet, Rachel headed up to Whyalla as a teen to study hairdressing. At their intro day the lecturer said that one of the girls WILL get pregnant. They were right. That young woman was Rachel. What followed was a series of challenging times and many ‘red flags' that led her to Yarredi Services in Port Lincoln. These days Rachel can still be found at Yarredi Services, but it looks very different to when she first connected with them. Take care and enjoy the inspiring conversation we were lucky enough to have with Rachel. If you are in a relationship or situation that is unsafe, please reach out. Yarredi Services vision is “An empowered, safe and respectful community”. Founded in 1979, Yarredi Services began operations as safe accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence. Currently the organisation offers service to women and children affected by, or at risk from, domestic violence. Yarredi provides a range of services that aim to support and empower clients. These services include; *Specialist domestic and family violence counselling utilising a case management framework. *Therapeutic Children's Wellbeing Program and family liaison *Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS) - providing an avenue for a person who may be at risk of domestic violence to get information about their partner or former partner, to help make decisions about their safety and the future of the relationship. https://www.police.sa.gov.au/your-safety/dvds *Community development initiatives, including group work, Healthy Relationships sessions in schools, and public speaking engagements. *This episode discusses farming, suicide prevention and Ski for Life. Hayden McFarlane has had a few different career changes in his time. He is now working on his family farm but has the best of both worlds by living 'in town'. Hayden's love for water skiing, teamed with his own challenges with his mental health, has seen him take part in Ski for Life. Ski for Life events have been held over the long weekend in March for over a decade. Starting at Murray Bridge and finishing at Renmark, Ski For Life is a water-skiing relay held over 3 days. Ski for Life Inc is an incorporated body whose members are committed to raising awareness and promoting mental health, wellbeing and suicide prevention. Their fundraising is enabling us to provide grants to groups undertaking projects which align with our mission. This episode drop is perfect timing as Ski for Life are thrilled to announce the registration details for their 2025 event! After their biggest event yet in 2024, they've made some changes to keep things smooth, accessible, and safe. They're capping the total number of boats at 40, including the chase boat. For more details check out their Facebook or head to their website, https://www.skiforlife.com.au/ If you are concerned about someone who is struggling and finding it difficult to see their way out of grief or mental challenges, then we highly recommend Question. *Please be aware that this episode discusses childhood cancer, death of a child and Voluntary Assisted Dying. Circa 2021, Liz Habermann appeared on ABC TV and in the media, but not due to being a famous actress. Unfortunately Liz's name became known to many across the Nation due to her heart breaking experience of losing her teen son, Rhys, to cancer. That wasn't the only reason her name became memorable because Liz also became a fierce advocate for Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD), spurred on by Rhys' strong support for the option; one he unfortunately didn't legally have access to. Take care when listening to our chat. It is emotional, but also insightful. Above all, it is a recount of Liz's experience and Rhys' wishes. VAD is not something that everyone is comfortable with or agrees with. It is a relatively new option for people in South Australia, enabling eligible people to voluntarily access and self-administer, or in some circumstances have a doctor administer, a medication that will cause their death, in accordance with the process set out in the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2021 (SA). Although it is an overwhelming choice to be given, it is ultimately a choice that did not exist a few years ago. Not necessarily connected to a cancer diagnosis, but if you are concerned about someone who is struggling and finding it difficult to see their way out of grief or mental challenges, then we highly recommend Question. *Please be aware that among the deep discussions of life and society, this episode alludes to hopelessness and suicidal thoughts. Mike Pearson wears many hats. Many of you may know him from his younger days at Cockaleechie. Many of you may know him from the music shop and venue, ‘Sound City'. We loved the journey this interesting chat took us on. Music creeps into another episode – what a great tool it is for wellbeing! Sorry, no songs or jam sessions in this episode though! *Please be aware that, among lots of amazingness, this episode discusses suicide attempts, hospitalisation and feelings of hopelessness. Dom Robinson is someone who loves to give back to his community and bring a smile to the faces of those around him. A talented, fun and happy person, Dom really highlights the fact that we really don't know everybody's story and to always be kind. *Please be aware that this episode discusses the death of a sibling. Brooke Montgomerie has always been one to 'give life a crack'. What many people, who knew Brooke from a young age, wouldn't have known is that she struggled with her self-confidence and often thought that she wasn't able to achieve targets she set. When Brooke was 30, her younger sister, Simone, tragically passed away in a horse riding accident. Through grief, Brooke began to challenge herself in ways she never thought she could; all the while honouring her dear sister. *Please be aware that this episode discusses living with a congenital heart defect, fertility challenges and depression. Louise Pickford was born with Congenitally Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries, which is a rare heart defect. In congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA), the heart twists abnormally during fetal development, and the ventricles are reversed: The stronger left ventricle pumps blood to the lungs and the weaker right ventricle has the harder chore of pumping blood to the entire body. The right ventricle is not built to last as long as the left ventricle. With this can come a handful of challenges. With this can come some incredible growth too. Lou shares with us the challenges and triumphs of a life with a congenital heart condition. If you would like resources relating to miscarriage, you are able to access support and information online through SANDS and the Pink Elephants Support Network. Simone Bertram is on a mission to leave no stone unturned! She is here to live her life to the fullest and is using her mindset to do just that! Simone is passionate about transformation and growth and is using her belief in herself and the universe to live a life she loves with her family, but also supporting others to live the life they wish to. Simone's mission is clear: to empower individuals, with the knowledge that you have the extraordinary ability to manifest and achieve everything you can envision – in your career, family, social life, and health. “There is a difference between WISHING for a thing and being READY to receive it. No one is ready for a thing, until he believes he can acquire it. The state of mind must be BELIEF, not mere hope or wish. Open-mindedness is essential for belief.”- Napoleon Hill. *A worthy note - At the time of publishing this episode in October 2023, teen entrepreneur, Clay Bertram of Squids Sandboards, has fundraised and donated well over $30,000 to the Royal Flying Doctors Service, Variety SA and the Tunarama Festival! Please note that opinions shared on this podcast should not replace medical care. The mental health journey is unique for every individual. Know that there are a range of avenues to support healing. Their website can be found at www.liftcancercare.com.au Jac's Podcast, 'Cancer Culture', can be found here! If you are looking for support, Cancer Council 13 11 20 is a free, confidential telephone information and support service for cancer patients, people living with cancer, their families, carers and friends, teachers, students and healthcare professionals. Trained staff are available to answer questions about cancer and offer emotional or practical support. They are open between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Cancer Council also provides online support through the Cancer Council Online Community, where you can ask questions and participate in groups, forums and blogs. Please also be aware that if you are seeking cancer treatment, you can look into the Patient Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS), which is a subsidy program funded by the Government of South Australia. Through PATS, subsidies are provided to assist South Australians who are required to travel more than 100km each way to access necessary and approved medical specialist services that are not available locally. Approved escorts are also eligible for PATS. For more information about PATS or to find out if you are eligible for subsidies, please visit www.PATS.sa.gov.au Another option, which many people are unaware of, is Angel Flight. Angel Flight is a charity which coordinates non-emergency flights to assist country people to access specialist medical treatment that would otherwise be unavailable to them because of vast distance and high travel costs. All flights are free and may involve travel to medical facilities anywhere in Australia. Charlie Giles has been living on Eyre Peninsula for a long time, in fact he is edging his way to 97 at the time of this recording. At 96 years of age his memory recall is pretty impressive. The life he describes is something that is so hard to fathom in this day and age where everyone is so connected... but are people really connected? This conversation definitely gets the mind thinking about different facets of life. Please be aware that this episode discusses dementia, death during the war and comes from a point of view with opinions of someone who was born in the 1920's- a big contrast to now! “The world is your oyster. It's up to you to find the Pearls.” – Chris Gardner *Please be aware that this episode discusses depression, low self-esteem and alcohol and drug use. Shane Grocke has been what many would describe as someone who is the life of the party. He has mates on both sides of the country and gets the opportunity to enjoy living up north for half the year and then back on the EP for the other half; ocean to ocean. Livin' the dream, right? As we have grown to know, sometimes the biggest party goer can be one of the unhappiest party goers. Using alcohol and drugs to mask thoughts and feelings are all too common. It sometimes takes some dark moments to realise that changes need to be made and then the changes don't come easy. But they are worth it. The book that Shane refers to in this episode is called 'The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach To Living A Good Life' by Mark Manson. It is described on Amazon as follows: Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited--"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek. The Podcast that Shane referred to in the episode was 'The Mindset Mentor™' The podcast is "designed for anyone desiring motivation, direction, and focus in life and blends neurology, neurobiology, psychology, early childhood development and cognitive behavioural therapy so that you can understand the way your brain and body work together, because when you understand yourself, it makes it much easier to make a plan to change and succeed. When you master your mindset, you master your life." *Please be aware that this episode discusses depression, hospitalisation and challenges related to motherhood. Blaise Baldissera is a brilliant Mum! Like many Mums she found the transition to becoming a Mum a challenge that she didn't quite expect. With the support from her family and loved ones, Blaise reached out and received the support she needed in the form of a stay at Helen Mayo House. Many people don't know about this great service in Adelaide which provides inpatient services for parents who have significant mental health problems in the postnatal period. Women/carers and their infant/s aged 12 months and under can be admitted to Helen Mayo House if they are the parent with primary responsibility for the infant and have a mental illness. Mental health problems, such as severe depression, anxiety or psychotic illnesses are considered to be significant if they impact on the parent's ability to function in everyday life and care for their child. If you have an admission to Helen Mayo House, you can expect an average stay of two to three weeks. However, you may have a longer or shorter admission depending on your needs. During this time the team, including Psychiatrists, Nurses, Clinical Psychologist, Social Worker and Parent-Infant Therapist will provide medical and therapeutic support for you and your child. *Please be aware that this episode (and blurb below) discusses death by drowning, life as a young widow, depression and grief. Danni Skinner is a kind, fun-loving and loved person. If you were standing next to her in the supermarket you would never know that she was widowed at just 27 when her husband Brad, at just 31 years old, passed in a tragic accident. Danni and Brad were together for 9 and a half years. Danni received their professional wedding photos just a few days after Brad's funeral. Looking at them without Brad ‘was just so bloody cruel', Danni says, but she also cherishes them and says that they now bring more happiness when she looks at them. 4 years on and it has been a journey for Danni (and Brad's loved ones), to say the least. There's lots of things that make grief tough. One example in this instance is that Danni and Brad's family still don't have his final death certificate and this is due to a possible inquest with a judge and jury to change rules and regulations around hookah sets, so they will be safer to use. Not having the death certificate is something that makes it difficult for Danni to have some closure. Danni speaks so fondly of Brad and says that it felt like he was ‘her' person and she was his, that they were like soulmates and had that kind of rare, special love. Danni said “I'm so lucky and grateful for our love story. He was amazing. An infectious person that could light every room he walked in. He was funny, that was his thing, and he was just loved by everyone. A real character with so many amazing qualities. He will be forever missed.” Something that Danni didn't get to mention in our chat was that she has upcoming travel plans next year around Australia, with Ernie! She wants to get a van with a bed in the back, and do some travelling. Danni then has a little exciting surprise in store as she is planning on also opening up a new little business in Cummins in January. We thank Danni for showing us that there is still hope to make a new life for yourself, and you can bring yourself out of the depths of despair. John Treloar, known as JT, is a bloke from Cummins who is an SA Ambulance Service volunteer, as well as the Chairperson of the local Suicide Prevention Network, Empowering Lower Eyre. He is well respected, well known and well liked and wears a multitude of hats in the Cummins community. First responder to a lot of people in their most vulnerable times, a face that brings with it hope and a sense that now that he is here everything will be okay. A Suicide Prevention Network is formed through a collaboration between Wellbeing SA, local government and the community.
