*Please be aware that this episode discusses the death of a sibling. Brooke Montgomerie has always been one to 'give life a crack'. What many people, who knew Brooke from a young age, wouldn't have known is that she struggled with her self-confidence and often thought that she wasn't able to achieve targets she set. When Brooke was 30, her younger sister, Simone, tragically passed away in a horse riding accident. Through grief, Brooke began to challenge herself in ways she never thought she could; all the while honouring her dear sister. SHOW NOTESIn today's episode of the Talk Heathen, Katy Montgomerie and Student Doctor Ben amaze you with their switching of accents, knowledge of innate beliefs, genomes, what makes a person trans, the blind intelligent designer, and general purpose of the show. Vaclav from CZ describes a study claiming children have an innate belief in a prime mover that is one god. How do you get a control group for this with the children never having been taught anything prior? It is interesting that many societies have come up with some kind of god but there are huge differences between these gods. Many cultures also got to a flat earth model. If god were real, why would some cultures be given wrong information? Billy in TX presents the following syllogism: The genome contains algorithms and these algorithms require intelligence so therefore the genome requires intelligence. Where in this process do we obtain the code and how is this code processed? What is the difference between the most basic chemical reaction and DNA? Chemical reactions and almost everything could be described as algorithms. What forces are in play that cause DNA to follow a pattern? Calling the genome a code is an oversimplification. Otavio from France would like to know what makes people trans. If we do obtain this knowledge, where do we go from there? This can end up gatekeeping people, because if someone does not meet the criteria for trans, we may end up not giving them the support needed. There could be horrific results of obtaining this knowledge because there are a lot of people with power that are invested in creating a world without trans people. The important thing to remember is even if being LGBTQ were a free choice, it is still morally neutral. Tibor in NY wants to know what the purpose of the show is. We are not just debating the people who call in; there is a whole side show. Doctor Ben shares that he deconverted as a result of these shows. Working with all these topics can help give the audience develop critical thinking. We are also showing other atheists that we are here taking on callers head on. We provide a community to people who don't know any other atheists. There are people out there that support you. TYmm in WA calls to say that it seems like the intelligent designer is blind. If you are an all powerful being with infinite powers, why would you put together something as sloppy as a human? Adam and Eve could have been millipedes. Maybe there is a team of engineers designing humans with a committee that can't agree on anything. Thank you for tuning in this week and please remember our essential workers. For the question of the week, fill in the blank: I made a deal with the Devil, and all I got was______.

In today's episode of the Talk Heathen, Katy Montgomerie and Student Doctor Ben will discuss the Bible proving the Bible, atheism as a religion, why communities exist, the ethics of using charity to spread religion, and if historical Jesus is important. Bernard in NY is our first caller and has evidence of god's existence! The proof is that the Old Testament says it would be accepted and it was accepted. Does having people accept a text make it true? Could a person write something that is partially true and partially false? Is it possible that god is lying? Do you know everything about this god? How do we know god told Moses to write this? The caller creates the best circle we have ever seen by stating that the people must accept the text first. Malachi from AR perceives that atheists seem religious because it leans left like the religious community leans right. We agree the community should not have political leanings. In many countries, religion is not a driving force, but in others, it is a huge deal to come out as an atheist. When this happens, the community wants to support freedom of religion or lack thereof. Ben's family was more willing to accept coming out as trans then they were coming out as atheist. The caller goes on to say that both the gay community and the black community are preposterous. Communities prevent civil rights from being removed. Adding rights to these communities that other people already have, is not taking away any rights. Prasad in India says that charity is a good thing and asks why it matters if this charity is from a religious group. When the underlying motive is to convert, it is not fair to the recipients because it teaches people to rely on religion and authority to eat. This works for conversion and the religions know this. People who truly believe they are doing the right thing with good intentions can still cause harm. If schools are created that teach religion in a place that does not have schools, indoctrination happens.Last caller is Evan in CO who asks if the hosts believe Jesus is a historical figure. It does not matter because we don't accept that he did what the Bible says he did. Even if we accept this as a premise, we don't need to care about it. It is interesting to see how ancient people lived, however, it is unacceptable when religious people exclaim that morality has changed because it was a different time. Either it is made up garbage, or god is not moral, or objective morality has changed. Thank you for tuning in and watching us talk to callers who believe in circular reasoning! This is your community!

After some small talk about the holidays, trans YouTuber, activist, and social media bon vivant Katy Montgomerie cheerfully and calmly explains how Gender Criticals aren't feminist, believe in sexed souls, advocate for the elimination of trans people, and want to ruin Katy's life. The O'Meara opened in 2002 and is traditionally known as a parkland course in KIldare. The Montgomerie is the polar opposite: An inland-links course lined with deep, intimidating bunkers. In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Katy Montgomerie and Johnny Angel will work through caller questions of Sharia Law, pronouns, god creating chaos, and judgemental atheists. First up is Brett in CA who describes a study in Islamic research that showed that 70% of moderate Muslims support Sharia Law. He is concerned about how many people believe it is okay to kill apostates or those who leave the religion. These findings are not surprising; we know that some of these places are not great for human rights. When anyone gives a number that is just percentages, it is easy to conceal the big picture. Progressive minded folks tend not to focus attention on Islam since it is not the dominant religion in the U.S. However, as humanists, we need to care about these things. Carlos in OK who askes about atheists that appear to be forcing their gay, transgender, and pronoun views on others. Katy explains that the pronoun thing is quite easy because you just address the person by what they request like you would their name. Sometimes when people get misgendered, they just want to make sure the person knows and move on. We don't know what a person has been through on a particular day or why they would react in different ways to an inadvertent misgendering. The trans person is not trying to force their beliefs on you, but just wanting to be treated like a person. Treat trans people with the respect they treat you with. What is the point in being disrespectful or impolite? Amanuel in TX says that maybe all religions have it correct since they all say similar things and when bad things happen, we can trace it back to God. What happens when religions make claims about each other? Can they all be right? Why is god not a monster for creating the laws of nature, Covid, and childhood cancer? Why is scripture the ultimate authority? If you choose not to take a risk, why are you not afraid of sparking the wrath of Allah? How do we know which scripture/religion is right and where to spend our time? How will one survive in heaven and not always be on pins and needles with the possibility of a Luciferian thought? Did god create non-believers with the purpose of not believing in order to burn in eternity? If god exists, why should we worship this immoral monster?David in CA says the atheist community is judgemental. People in the comments and live chat call him stupid. That is not cool, and we do not like this! People on the internet can be horrible, and that includes atheists. Atheists may be judgemental, but they are not uniquely judgemental or abusive. It is not judgemental if we ask you to bring something to the conversation other than giving us homework. Thank you everyone for tuning in! We will see you next week and try to be decent human beings!

In today's episode of Talk Heathen, we have Johnnie P. Angel and Katy Montgomerie join forces to destroy our greatest foe: Earth's yellow sun. Er, actually we're just talking to callers today, no sun destroying. First up! Stephen in WA asks how to talk with family that falls for the more sensational conservative talking points, like transgender panic. Typically people hate without knowing how others live or experience love, maybe introduce them to comedians or online personalities. You can educate and find common ground or just walk away, if necessary. Rick in Canada claims that Jesus predicted the current coronavirus. He quotes Matthew 24:15, “the abomination of desolation stand in the holy place”. This isn't the first pandemic, nor the worst, how does that verse predict Covid-19? You need to get way more specific in your predictions. Oh wow, now the emoticon “:)” in the KJV bible is proof of god? Our first Argument From Emoji!Kevin from NY argues that there is extra biblical evidence for the existence of Jesus, for example the apocrypha. How can we know if anything in an ancient book actually happened or if it's just a storybook? You can't assume miracles and the supernatural because of an old text. Sorry, a bible just doesn't work to prove anything divine. Jamie in TX asks how to tackle the argument that transgender folks need their own sports league. That might be a good idea to allow trans people to play sports without facing transphobia. Mandatory forced segregated leagues is a horrible idea, it's the same as a ban. We should try to let anyone compete, if possible. Thank you everyone for tuning in! Remember the essential workers and we will see you next week!

In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Katy Montgomerie and Secular Rarity will sort through callers as Katy drops us some fun lichen facts. First caller is D in DC who is wondering about the distinction between religion, deism, and theism when it comes to ecological circumstances. There could be a cultural practice linked with religion such as vegetarianism that can help. Having a ritualistic set of practices can have its benefits, but what happens if people decide to stop doing these things? Will ecologically beneficial religious practices be harmful in 1,000 years? Employ critical thinking to help guide that process. Next is Thomas in Canada who states that not having a belief in Jesus leads to murder. Do Christians murder and if so, were they just not real Christians? If we start throwing rules down on what makes an actual Christian, how many Christians will we have left? How does not knowing if you are going to heaven or hell have anything to do with your current state of belief? If someone isn't a Christian if they sin, and everyone sins, does that mean that no one is a Christian? This is a textbook No True Scotsman fallacy.Patrick in FL is curious about what Dawkins means by Pantheism being sexed-up atheism. When someone describes god as literally everything, it can be agreed that everything exists but to call it god is just a word game. With this definition, at the end of the day, god is indistinguishable from reality. How have you demonstrated to yourself that the universe is conscious? Even if you have, we would just have one new fact.Jasmine in Canada has some thoughts about atheists perceiving other atheists negatively. Some atheists will carry their arrogance to other domains just because they might be right about some things. Atheists can appear to be the only one that has a problem with something when in the minority, and there are also atheists that are just dickheads. Just being an atheist can put you in a position where you can't really live, while not affecting Christians. It does not matter what the label is and there is no sense in being worried where you land. It is okay to be apathetic and not care about what you call yourself. Tom in MI says that as a critical thinker, he uses Greek history as proof of the existence of gods. What is your definition of existing? Where does your god sit on this definition? What is the correspondence of ancient beliefs and the world we live in now? If people in the past thought something was real, does that make it real? We remain unconvinced of Zeus and Poseidon. Thank you for tuning into today's show, remember to thank the essential workers and turn us on next time for more of Katy's facts!

In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Student Doctor Ben is joined by Katy Mongomerie who will challenge creationists to refute crab facts and evolution, talk about trans brains, energy, and hateful atheists. First up is Humanist Reformation in OR who is going to use the bible to disprove the bible. God made some predictions and prophecies that never came true. Look at Matthew 23 and think through what, “this generation” means. If your religion has room for interpretation, how do you know that your version is the correct one?Eli in VA describes a link between the brain chemistry of trans people and the affirmed gender. He asks how this translates into cultures that don't hold the strict views of gender that we have here in the U.S. Gender identity is something that develops as a part of the brain or person very much the same way that left handedness does. Trans people are largely composed of nature parts, and it is more complicated than the binary brain model. Some of it is sexual bimorphism. With some parts of the brain you will find that trans men and women are like cis of the affirmed gender. We know that conversion therapy does not work even through torture and that the overlap between male and female brains is so tight that there is very little difference. This is still only 1% of what the hosts wanted to say. Rick from Canada defines energy as something that is all around us, comes in many different forms, is eternal, created the big bang, and that the only thing certain in the beginning was energy. We don't know if energy has always existed or was created by a divine being. An afterlife is a separate claim. Why should this concern us? Just because that energy exists, does not mean that there is awareness. Energy is the capacity to do work, not consciousness. We can detect energy, but how can we measure a soul? If energy cannot be created or destroyed, and if souls are energy, then where do the new souls come from? Why do we need to take the Bible's word for what a soul or energy is?Hayley in DE observed atheists being loud and hateful when she was growing up (particularly one person) and now views them as the cause of all sorts of discourse and rancor throughout history. Have you encountered enough atheists to know this? It is very easy to draw conclusions from patterns that we perceive to be there. Were these atheists already not nice people, or is it the atheism that caused them to be less kind? Sometimes you can see these same patterns in politics, sports, and other examples in our society. Try and make friends with an atheist, find common ground, and you will find that some of them are okay. Thank you for tuning in this week! Remember to check out our other shows and stay safe!

In today's episode of Talk Heathen we have Johnny P. Angel joined by the one and only Katy Montgomerie who will ask callers questions to make them think in addition to giving us some fun facts about the animal kingdom. Our first caller is Kyle in IL who argues that if there is no religion, we can end up having bad ideas, and productivity goes down. This is because his son made up a religion and has abandoned Christianity, and can't make money doing that. What is the difference between a 15 year old making up a religion and anyone else doing so? How do you determine which religion is the right one? We are not convinced that religion has anything to do with productivity. Is it necessary for a society to have a supernatural goal in order to succeed?Next is Ulrich in Mexico that wants to know how evolution results in being transgender.. Katy fires away with some examples in nature including an amazing crab fact. Often in meerkats, in order for the best survival of the genes, they need to work together. There are examples within the animal kingdom where the genes are not necessary to be passed on for survival. Gender identity is something that lots of animals have where the males and females act differently around each other. Some species often change sex such as clown fish. When this happens, the behavior changes happen first. 90% of all the sex that bonobos have is lesbian sex and this builds social bonds making them less likely to fight.Patrick in Fl asks why pantheism is laughable. He is exploring the possibility that the universe could be considered conscious and that it comes down to faith. He claims that atheists state that god does not exist. Just because we agree that the universe may have come from something, it does not mean that we believe in your god. Is there another reason we should believe other than faith? If a god exists, that god would know what it takes to convince us of that god's existence. If your god is a natural god, then you should be able to use science to prove it. Why do you believe that the universe is god if we do not have evidence for it?Joe from PA claims that the earth did not just come out of nowhere and there has to be a god. We could have three possible world views, one is god created the earth, another is that a spell was cast a day before you were born by a wizard named Gary, and a third is that planets collided. Of these possibilities, how do you go about determining the right one? Why does a child being born make you think that god exists? Why did god create humans where we need air to breathe?Last caller is Alok from CA that wants to know if being LGBTQ is a choice. All human behavior is a mixture of nature and nurture. In this case it is largely nature. There is evidence in every culture and all throughout history. We have evidence that conversion therapy does not work. If it was a choice, then they should be allowed to choose that. That is all for today heathens, thank you for tuning in and always stay safe!

In light of Father's Day, who was the worst dad in the Bible? Abraham? Lot? Noah? Jephthah? How about Yahweh himself?First up is Davan in NE who argues the soul could potentially exist partly because of having out of body experiences, even though rationally he attributes these experiences to a dream. The idea of the soul as originally brought out by the texts is valid is his stance. How can any given experience be evidence for a soul if we know these things happen in the brain? Why would we use the “soul” label? Does the soul have some other component that is not part of the brain or body?Next is Teo from Croatia who wants to talk about the possibility of a heathen experiencing a Christian god. Would you agree that it is possible for people to imagine things that are logical and make sense? How do we tell the difference between experiencing a god and our imagination? Is it possible to believe things on faith that are not true? How do you know you have had an experience with a god and if it is true? Why should anybody believe that a god has manifested anywhere? Could your same reasoning prove a genie? If you can't prove something does not exist, does that mean you can prove that it does exist?Judy from IN has an insight that we are stardust because fluorine from another planet is connected to the fluoride in our body. Katy explains who things formed including large stars, nuclear fusion, and supernovas. Scientific claims need to be supported by evidence. Truth is valued differently in the scientific community than it is the Christian community. If we have a claim, we should be able to test that model.Tony in NY feels that atheism only works in the physical world and that money is a god that we worship. Does not believing in Santa Clause only work in the physical world? Money is real and has transactional value as currency. What is the evidence of there being a non-physical world? Why do you think that thoughts are not physical? What in money maps the claim that god exists? Is there anything that religion is essential for, and we could not achieve through secular means? As atheists, we are not saying religions do not exist. We are only saying it is possible to exist without religion.Chris in Scotland would like to know if it is possible to be moral without knowing how bad you can be. He wants to know if you can truly know the best without knowing the worst. Morals are not well defined. First caller is Ruth in CA who has a message for Christians: Get out of the way and let us be people. You are taking us back to the dark ages and are afraid of losing your evangelical followers. Kenneth reminds us that the incentive for elected officials is not always to do the right thing, but to take advantage of peop's rage against those who are different. Katy connects the dots between misogyny, the Bible, and the opposition to abortion. It is scary when people weaponize religion. Ruth finishes the call by thanking the hosts for providing an education for us.Dani in the UK asks Katy if it is easier to be trans in the UK than it is in the U.S. Katy informs us that most people are not wanting to take away trans rights and are not bigoted in the UK. She mentions that the U.S. has states with varying laws and attitudes regarding trans people. Even within states, things can vary and it is not even as simple as rural vs urban. Xeno from South Korea has scientific evidence for god. His evidence is mathematical and starts by asking the hosts to put a number on how much they know about the universe. Even if the hosts know virtually nothing, where is the evidence? Can we convict somebody of a crime by using evidence found with all the stuff that we don't know? Science is the best method we know of to explain what is true. If you have another way to show if something is true, then you need to demonstrate that. How do we know that a frog wizard with colors is not the something that was the beginning of your god?Special guest Clara, president of the UTSA Secular Student Alliance (SSA) in San Antonio is our last caller. She got involved with the SSA in 2016 by noticing the students with the table and attending meetings. She slowly learned more and has been president since 2019. This is an important group because there are over 25 religious groups on campus, but this is the only secular group. The SSA has been around since 2013 and is there to support non religious students when they need help getting out of religion. The best way to learn about the organization or support is through the website. She brings up to religious people these questions: Did god create this huge area that we can't explore including black holes, radiation, and solar flares? In a universe so vast, why would we be the center of creation? Why did god not even give us gills, wings, or the eyes of a bee? Why did god create Covid? The discussion led to pondering the types of religious upbringing that can be considered child abuse such as conversion therapy, young earth, or women being inferior.Next is Forest in MA that would like to talk about bringing down the wall when communicating with religious people. He uses Philippians 4:8 as Hitchens suggests to assist with this process. If people are not wanting to know what is true, then they are not true Christians. Katie tends to not use verses when talking with Christians because they are open to interpretation. Genevieve has an approach where she will ask them if they want to make sure that what they believe is true when there are such high stakes involving eternity. She would like to see an inquisitive mind with what people believe.Billy in TX states that atheists don't argue against the existence of god well and just because the universe is hostile, and religious people are stupid, does not mean there is not a god. He never heard Christians say that god made the universe for them and says that most scientists will tell you that random mutation will not get us where we are now. He thinks that the hosts' responses are pointless and does not understand how mutations can be caused by the environment. He angrily wanted the hosts to prove what the majority of scientists believe. Should we contact every scientist and ask them? Why did god just not skip the whole heaven and hell thing and make the universe a giant playground? The two displayed patience as the caller got abusively belligerent with plenty of accusations and ad hominems. One of the things that my friends and I talk about a lot is what it really takes to hold your desire. It's not all puppies and rainbows. It can look glamorous from the outside, but it really requires you to be honest with yourself, follow the desire as it shifts, and take full responsibility for it along the way. Join me with my sisters, Aimee Batuski and Ellie Shepley Montgomerie as we share some real examples from our own lives and let you in on how desire works us over and over again! Greetings Heathens! In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Katy Montgomerie is joined by Kenneth Leonard. It's going to be a great show!Let's get to calls! Nick from Arizona would like to talk about the greatest contradictions contained within the bible. Katy brings up the idea of Hell and how an all loving God has a place like that for punishment. I hurt you because I love you is incredibly toxic.Alex in Australia is up next, he claims that God does exist and he has the arguments to prove it scientifically and philosophically. He goes on to try to claim that mathematics (and specifically the Fibonacci Sequence,) is magical or indicates a supreme being because of its complexity.Returning caller Gohan in Texas claims that the existence of morality is based on God and created the standard of what is right and what is wrong in terms of this morality. Sadly, Gohan doesn't really define their terms and the call devolves into arbitrary lists of do's and don'ts (morality.) His arguments don't really fly though.Jeff in Ohio says the Bible is accurate and that it explains and reflects the human condition very well. Except for when it is inconsistent and conflicts with itself but purports itself to being THE source for accuracy, morality, etc. So it doesn't explain it all very well at all. That's our show for this week, please continue to be safe in your area, wear your mask, and please please PLEASE get vaccinated and boosted if you can. Greetings heathens! Time to get down with our host Katy Montgomerie and special guest MD Aware.First up is Logical Apostate in MO that wants to understand how trans rights are impacted by religion. People tend to react to trans people the same way they would react to gay people because they look to the closest language to trans mentioned in their scriptures that would be considered an abomination. They use that as justification for their bias. The actual law of the religion is often not the driving force of prejudices.Ameet in NY is next and is asking about how the alkaline diet is purported to kill cancer cells. The pH of the body is extremely controlled. If the pH drops below 7 or rises up to 8, it is a sign of demise. Pushing these limits can be fatal. Whenever someone says “blank” kills cancer cells, remember that bullets do the same thing. Any normal alkaline diet can not significantly alter the body's pH, and if it did, it would probably kill the person as well.Mike from WA belligerently tries to argue with a real scientist that information contained in DNA must have come from somewhere and that there was no natural selection. Mike, ad hominem attacks do not change the fact that DNA are chemicals and are naturally selected according to physical and chemical laws. This is a physical process and is not the same as information nor is it a recipe. DNA is a chemical that self replicates under the correct conditions.Ron in Canada believes the Bible is entirely true and contains an ancient wisdom that has revolutionized Western Civilization. When asked what makes the Bible true, his answer is the same that Muslims give about the Quran. And that is that he believes the Bible is so great that it could not have been written by man. This is a false dichotomy because there is no evidence that a supernatural entity exists to have written the Bible as opposed to human writings. The claims in the Bible can't be used to prove itself; we need evidence. We are not convinced that what the people wrote in the Bible were inspired by a god. Finally we have Allison in CA who grew up in a cult and now considers herself an atheist but wants to understand why we need to use the atheist label because it feels limiting. The label is there and roughly describes what is believed. An atheist just means we are not convinced of any god claims. Descriptions are interesting to humans and communicate topics. More importantly, we need to address the struggle against atheist rights, and using the label assists with this. That is all for today folks! Thank you for tuning in to the show and we will see you soon!

Joseph from Ohio would like to talk about mythological gods and if we are 100% certain that they don't exist as well. Johnny was very excited to talk about Anubis and Odin and whether we can be certain they don't exist during this call.Mike in California is up next, he believes if humanity as a whole would reject religion completely, that it would be anarchy and chaos in the world. He goes on to say that the fabric of society would be more fractured than it is now. Show us the evidence this would happen Mike. Hmmmm… Along with Katy, we just aren't convinced of this.Returning caller Kevin in New York, is calling yet again wanting to discuss how the Earth and the Solar System is made especially for humans. What about the oceans and other inhospitable areas like the top of Mt. Everest Kevin, or the vacuum of space? C'mon dude, think about it for a moment. Wonder what his next topic on his next call will be… perhaps the apocrypha?David in North Carolina is calling about deplatforming evangelical extremists and charismatic Christian bigots in politics. Shannon Q where are you, we need you for this caller!Stewart in the UK is calling in about teaching critical thinking and the scientific method to recovering mental health patients and their success with it. Greetings Heathens! In today's episode of the Talk Heathen, we have a special “Dependence Day” Special with Lloyd Evans and Katy Montgomerie. First up we have Brian in Illinois who is comparing court testimony to the Bible's testimony, and this is the only reliable testimony for belief. Maybe someone else's religion is more reliable. How do we decide which religion offers reliable testimony? Simply calling something testimony does not mean we have to listen to it. Gerald from Europe is being bullied by an internet online preacher that sounded nice and convincing at first, and used the Bible to back his arguments up, but turned out to be a bully. Some countries have harassment laws that cover online harassment. Sometimes if these types of people have a big enough platform, you will be able to call them out every time they say something ridiculous. Follow due process and see what options are available to record and report to authorities. Christopher in AZ has experimental evidence showing that religious people are better off and do less of things like steal and use drugs. Confirmation bias may be the explanation for these studies. Looking at different data sets will show just the opposite of what the caller is stating. If the caller is correct, there is no need to use a pre-existing religion. We can just make up a new one with a whole new set of lies, and it can increase well being. How many lies do we need to accept to be happy?Gregory in TN wants to look at the human brain when a person is convinced of something. Why would one person accept risk and another not? It may come down to brain chemistry. Different people will have different thresholds to acceptable propositions. Brain development and age will also be a factor in how a person is convinced.Ryan in MN has a sister who is struggling with miscarriages. Due to the beliefs of life starting at conception, each of these is viewed as a death in the family and causing her to become more indoctrinated. Now she is getting into Q-conspiracy theories. Try and help your sister find a support group or professional health care and remember she is not to blame for this. Street epistemology could be one avenue to use but keep in mind you can only do what you can in situations that you have little control over.Mike in OH is a Germanic Polytheist who states that the human body is too complex for random chance. Once you understand to a reasonable degree evolution, it is apparent how natural selection really works. The scale of time is so big that it can make a person think that design seems right. Chemicals can do so much more than what we may remember from science labs such as remembering information. Consult some of the science books on evolution to be better informed on how life can arise naturally. Thank you essential workers for saving lives! Heathens and believers have a safe week!

Everyone believes for different reasons. Try working on re-rationionalizing your way through when you have these feelings and check out books on skeptically thinking. Give yourself some time.Shelby in ME encourages Matt to reread the bible because he feels the bible is true. Is 4 times enough? WAIT, you haven’t even finished it?Steve in OH made a bet with Matt and claims to have paid up. However, Matt has no idea what you are talking about.Don in CA is grieving the loss of his son and is struggling with the lack of resources for atheists. Religions have a privileged position in society but they often provide false comfort in platitudes like “God needs another angel”. That minimizes the one and only life we know we have. Check out secular therapy project and grief beyond belief.John in CA asks about the fairness of trans women fighting in ciswomen’s events, like MMA. People say trans women just dominate cis women in sport but we don’t have this epidemic that is represented in media. There are a lot of performance factors, weight class, divisions, etc. It is fair that trans women compete in sports.Seleste in FL argues that the fabric of reality is made out of a crystal that has memory and emotions. Something smaller than an atom is not a crystal and rainbows don't come from crystals. Now water is made of crystals? Atoms and quarks are made of crystals too?? Holy crap.Buzz in WA thinks Matt was wrong in saying nothing exists out of time, arguing that photons exist out of time. Photons move at the speed of light, that denotes time. What difference does this make? Try calling a physics show.Arnie in WA is an ex-mormon and asks if he is guilty of the no true scotsman fallacy when he gets upset that other “mormon” callers say they believe in hell. You can define what is a mormon but the fallacy is excluding someone from that label based on unrelated things. For example, no true Mormon lives in Canada or no real christian murders people.Lastly, Scott in Mexico asks how to tell the difference if someone is mistaken or lying when they tell me they are a trans person. It’s akin to sexual preference or left handedness in that we can’t just outright tell if someone is lying. Most people don’t lie about these things but its’ pretty uncommon. We haven’t had examples of people lying about their gender identity in top level sports. That’s all for this week. Welcome to Part 2 of Women on FIRE! I am so excited to have Ellie Shepley Montgomerie back on the Be You Podcast today for more on the topic of pleasure. In Part 1, we learned so much about Ellie and her journey to becoming an intimacy coach through vulnerability. In that episode, we opened a lot of doors to some possible topics to talk about today, but we ultimately decided that we would discuss the topic of pleasure today.   Ellie Shepley Montgomerie is a Pleasure and Intimacy Expert and Co-Founder of her company Desire on Fire. Through her retreats and programs she teaches women how to create confident intimacy and fulfilling relationships. She’s personally trained with some of the top Intimacy and Sensuality teachers in the world. Together with her business partner Aimee Batuski, Ellie has created a remarkable sisterhood of women who allow their desires and pleasure to lead the way as they step into a whole new world of freedom, manifestation, and ease.    In today’s episode, we talk about the trigger word for a lot of women - pleasure. There’s so much to unpack here, but in today’s episode we begin that conversation. What is pleasure? What does it look like? How can a self-pleasure practice change your life? You may be surprised by how powerful a woman’s body can be.   Show Notes: [2:10] - Pleasure tends to be a topic that makes women recoil. Ellie acknowledges the baggage that women have about pleasure and admits that that’s how she used to be. [3:43] - The reason that Ellie started this work was because she could not orgasm. She thought something was wrong with her and explains why she felt shame. [4:34] - Ellie found Regena Thomashauer and her book Pussy: A Reclamation. The thesis of this book is that we barely have a word to talk about this area. It’s called so many different things. [5:47] - After hearing Regena speak at a conference and reading her books, Ellie realized this was a part of herself that she ignored while she focused on everything else. [7:14] - Jill gives you permission to feel uncomfortable with this topic but to listen to and hear what Ellie has to say. Jill explains that she was not ready for this for a long time. [8:21] - It took Ellie about 3 years to hone in on a self-pleasure practice. This was the most vulnerable and uncomfortable thing Ellie has faced in her personal growth. [9:38] - The point of self-pleasure is not always to feel good. Sometimes it is about developing a relationship with that part of yourself. Ellie compares it to meditation. [11:16] - Taking the goal of climax off the table, Ellie and her husband started a practice of orgasmic meditation. [12:13] - Ellie admits that after months of starting a self-pleasure practice, she hadn’t felt much except a lot of emotions, specifically sadness and grief. [14:49] - Wires have been crossed. We think that the overgiving is how we serve. We think that that’s how you be the good mom, daughter, or parent.  [15:33] - Ellie describes the struggle she had in making choices for herself and how she is codependent by nature. [17:03] - The difference in how Ellie sees the world is tremendous and she describes the change in her life. [18:54] - Jill notes that this isn’t about sex and masturbation. This is about how women are conditioned to feel that anything done for themselves is bad. [19:40] - Ellie recommends taking baby steps. This isn’t an all or nothing thing. Have a date with yourself, even if it is just 15 minutes. Practice being with yourself. [21:11] - By spending time with herself and getting to know herself more deeply, Ellie could see the results in her energy and how she was showing up in her day to day life.  [22:19] - Aimee and Ellie host a 5-day Pleasure Challenge and Ellie describes what it entails, giving a coupon code of PLEASURE for Be You listeners to join for free. [24:00] - The female body is capable of so much and through self-pleasure, Ellie can’t put herself down now. [25:34] - If you are feeling called, lean in a little bit. Read a book, take the Pleasure Challenge, and take a step. [26:22] - While this part of our bodies is powerful, it can also be where a lot of pain lives due to trauma. This is a space that Jill has not visited yet. [27:11] - Aimee and Ellie are not just doing work on orgasms and self-pleasure. They also work on healing from trauma and onto a path of self-love. [28:20] - This part of the journey is not all light. For some women, it could mean looking at a lot of darkness. But it looks at the things for which we feel shame. [30:06] - Jill describes how most women see this part of themselves as a source of pain. [31:33] - Even though Jill says she has avoided this area of personal development, Ellie acknowledges that she has started the work simply by talking about it. [32:40] - As we learn to speak up in this part of our lives, everything becomes easier. [33:41] - It took Ellie about a year to start this work after putting it on her radar. It is normal to feel uncomfortable at first. I know there was something in this episode that you were meant to hear. Let me know what that is. Today’s guest is so amazing that this is just Part 1 of two episodes on pleasure and desire with Ellie Shepley Montgomerie.   Ellie Shepley Montgomerie is a Pleasure and Intimacy Expert and Co-Founder of her company Desire on Fire. Through her retreats and programs, she teaches women how to create confident intimacy and fulfilling relationships. In today’s episode, Ellie describes her journey to being an intimacy coach and how opening herself up to being vulnerable has completely changed her life. She explains how our culture and upbringing could be getting in the way of true alignment and how the connections we have with our body are crucial in understanding ourselves and what’s getting in the way of true pleasure.   Show Notes: [3:04] - Ellie and Jill have been friends and former colleagues prior to now and Jill has had the opportunity to see her growth and achievements. [4:03] - Ellie shares that she heard Jill speak at a conference when she was only 18 years old in a previous business and their paths have crossed again. [4:41] - Ellie’s journey began in theater as a college student but over time, she discovered that she is more passionate about wellness. She started a wellness business through the company in which she met Jill. [5:53] - In her late twenties, Ellie was struggling with dating. She admits that she was single and didn’t want to be. She was living in New York and thought that the problem was the men she was dating. [6:40] - A friend invited Ellie to a course on growth and healing and her mind was blown. She then started the journey of personal growth and let go to find what’s holding her back. [8:14] - Ellie describes her thoughts during a typical date during that period of her life dating in New York. She explains that she was so inside her head that there wasn’t enough room for real connection. [9:34] - A coach gave Ellie a strategy to use while dating to be real without jumping too far in the future. This caused her to get out of her head and she met her husband. [10:19] - Ellie admits that when she met her husband, she thought he was the perfect “practice person,” because there was no way he was “the one.” [11:06] - Because she was practicing being real and didn’t feel the pressure she was used to putting on herself, she was able to get to know Rob better. [12:01] - Ellie shares how being open with the things they struggled with in past relationships early on helped them understand each other. [13:57] - Men at their core want to provide and when Ellie wasn’t opening herself up to receive, their needs and desires were not being met. [15:52] - As soon as Ellie started learning about all of this, she realized how frozen she had been and immersed herself in personal growth. [16:34] - Through doing retreats and personal growth together, Ellie and Rob were becoming more honest and willing to express their feelings. Ellie actually told Rob that she wanted to marry him. [17:42] - Ellie admits that she had judgments about people getting married because she felt that she was supposed to be an independent woman. But through an exercise that she describes, she opened herself up to accepting her desire for a life partner. [19:10] - Once she realized she had the desire for a life partner, Ellie describes it as a veil being lifted and seeing Rob differently from that moment on. [20:30] - Rob hadn’t thought about marriage at all because he always felt that he would be a bachelor forever. But once Ellie told him what she wanted, it allowed him to surrender everything that was in his way. [21:45] - Ellie tends to be controlling and her need to control Rob had to be put aside. That is something she has had to come to understand and work on. [22:52] - You can’t have control and intimacy at the same time. [24:00] - Realizing that she was manipulative and subtly trying to control Rob was something that Ellie had to excavate and dig deep about herself to deal with. [25:00] - Ellie describes what she calls “hiring” people for different reasons in our lives. [27:06] - Ellie did this personal growth for about 2 years and never intended to do this as a career. They moved to LA in 2018 and had done coach training. [27:50] - Her friend Aimee, who she met through coach training, approached her to do a retreat together, and Ellie explains that something came alive in her. [28:53] - When asked if she wanted to start a business together, Ellie said no. But when something is your purpose, you can’t escape it.  [30:18] - The plan was to not go beyond in-person retreats, but with Covid, Aimee and Ellie shifted to online courses and it has become something bigger than they imagined. [32:00] - Jill shares how she has noticed Ellie’s transformation just through social media. [33:32] - Ellie describes an online mentorship program that currently has 53 women working on this journey. [35:56] - “We live in a culture and have an epidemic where we are living from the head down. My experience is that everything that we need and all of our answers live in the body.” - Ellie Shepley Montgomerie [37:00] - There are so many things that we are told not to talk about, but Ellie explains how important it is to learn and be open to learning new things especially when it comes to personal development. [39:20] - Ellie demonstrates how her body knows what it needs and how coming into alignment with that understanding has changed her life. [41:09] - This alignment has rearranged Ellie’s life in a way that she never would have seen from her previous achievement-centered mindset. Today's episode is also the final installment of Amanda Alexander week. Amanda is the founder of the Detroit Justice Center. AMANDA: We're lawyers who support people's movements here in the city and who are fighting for a world without jails and prisons. ZAK: Amanda and I have been diving into the letter she wrote to her niece, Fiona, and later published in the Boston Globe. It's all about how Black woman have created movements and cultivated joy. And Amanda's letter is filled with some deep, deep wisdom and advice. Like this, find what brings you joy and use it for movements. AMANDA: Given that the task is as big as remaking society, and ending mass incarceration, creating conditions for people to thrive, it means that the problem is so deep that there is work for everyone all the time. And so, that means that everyone can be part of the solution and being part of the world that we need. And actually, there's so many good examples of people putting their talents and passions and particular joy to work for movements. ZAK: Like Georgia Gilmore and the Club from Nowhere. AMANDA: They were a group of cooks and bakers from Montgomerie, Alabama who made and sold food to help fund the Montgomerie Bus Boycott. It was 382 days long. And people often think that it was Rosa Parks, she refused to give up her seat, and maybe a few days later the busses were integrated. ZAK: Right, this spontaneous thing. AMANDA: Right, but this was a very long time and so people were doing things like The Club from Nowhere did to take their skills in cooking and baking and using the proceeds from sales to power right back into the movement. So in that case creating some delicious food that would fuel people and fortify their bodies and then taking the profits from that and very literally funding movement work. ZAK: We watch a lot of Mister Rogers around here and he has a song that you just reminded me of. The song is, There Are Many Ways To Say I Love You. AMANDA: Oh, I love that. ZAK: And this is an example of...find the thing that you care about or that you are good at or that you love and, like, use that for the greater good. AMANDA: Yes. Everyone has a role to play. ZAK:I hope you enjoyed this week as much as I have. Thank you so much, Amanda Alexander. If you haven't read her entire piece, How Black Woman Have Built Movements and Cultivated Joy, you must. It's at The Boston Globe. It's also linked in our show notes. As always I want to hear your advice. Give me a call at 844-935-BEST.

Greetings Heathens! Hope all y’all are doing well out there, it’s Sunday, so that means it’s time for atheist church. In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, Vi La Bianca is joined by the absolutely amazing Katy Montgomerie. Welcome back to the co-host seat Katy, we are so glad you are here.Let’s get to calls! Paul in Texas would like to talk about how he has proof or evidence of an omnipotent being which leads from deism to theism. He has a step by step process in showing this evidence even! By proving this, he hopes to completely disprove atheism as well. Oooooh, this should be fun, if we can just get through his preamble/definitional stage! Tom in California is up next, they are seeking some advice on their recent deconversion. After deconverting, what is the next step? First of all, congratulations and welcome to the community! Secondly, it really depends on your needs and if you’re inclined to, continue researching. Katy and Vi really dig into this.Nick in California is also a recently deconverted atheist and is curious about our take on near death experiences. This is an interesting conversation and really good to talk about, especially for newly deconverted atheists struggling with understanding natural processes.David in California is calling in asking about determinism and how it relates to free will if that’s such a thing. Vi asks really important questions; can you control the motivations that cause you to make choices? Where does free will come into play? And further, how does this pertain to religion or god? Hunter in Illinois is neither an atheist nor a theist. Ok, how? But he wants to talk about morality and if it’s worth it or not. The conversation evolves into a pascal’s wager type discussion, with Hunter hedging his bets on whether a god exists or not. Michael in Alabama is wondering about morality as well. He proposes we use the word ethics instead of morality when discussing these themes with theists. Ah, interesting concept, but will it work though?Up next, Carpe Diem in Colorado is calling in with a question that is likely to cause some interesting conversation and debate. Should doctors be forced to perform abortions? This question is odd though, what situation would there ever be where a doctor is forced to perform this procedure? If one doesn’t want to do it, there is likely another that can. However, this may be troublesome in highly legislated areas that are trying to make it impossible or improbable to get (i.e. within abortion deserts.) That’s our show for this week, please continue to be safe in your area, wear your mask, socially distance, flatten the curve. The world is better with you in it. See you next week!

The old-school way to train someone for a task involves memorization, repetition, and practice, in order to make it like second nature. Not only is that time-consuming, but also, people aren’t very good at it. So why train, when AR makes it obsolete? Scope AR aims to help companies get out of old habits, and CEO Scott Montgomerie drops by to explain how. Alan: Today’s guest is Scott Montgomerie from Scope AR. Scott is the CEO and co-founder of Scope AR, a global leader in developing augmented reality solutions and products for industrial clients focused around field maintenance, manufacturing, and training. As the pioneer of utilizing AR for industry support and training, Scope AR are partnered with technology leaders such as Google and Microsoft. Since founding the company in 2011, Scott as one of the first executives to get augmented reality tools in use by multi-billion dollar corporations. Having launched many AR firsts, Scott has become one of the industry’s thought leaders and visionaries. He’s shared his knowledge and spoken about some of the most innovative uses of AR at several leading conferences, including South by Southwest, Augmented World Expo, Unity Vision Summit, and XRDC. Some of the clients include Unilever, Prince Castle and Lockheed Martin. To learn more about Scope AR, visit scopear.com. Scott, welcome to the show. Scott: Thanks a lot, Alan. Alan: Yeah man, I’m really super excited. We’ve been kind of chatting offline and it’s amazing, the work you guys are doing and you’re starting to really see this uptake of augmented reality being used in enterprise. Can you maybe give people a 10,000 foot view of Scope AR, what you’re doing, and who your clients are, and what they’re using it for? Scott: Yeah, sure. So we really view that augmented reality is a way of interacting with the world in a way that’s much more intuitive, the way that we evolved with our hands and our eyes. And so we really view that there’s a huge market central there. I think it was a stat out there that said that, 90 percent of Silicon Valley is focused on the worker that’s at their desk, using computers and screens. And there’s a vast market out there that is untapped, in these field workers that are using their hands and their eyes. And so if we can use augmented reality to get them the information they need, at the time of need, and really help them become an expert when they need to know that information. And like I said, we think that’s a huge market. So we really approach the problem in two different ways with our products. The first is a remote assistance capability. So we were the first to market with a product called Remote AR, we launched in 2015. So it was far before any of the other 30 companies that are out there today. The idea is that it allows you to communicate over video between a technician and an expert. So it’s almost like FaceTime. If you’re looking at a piece of equipment — maybe a car engine — you take your phone or a pair of smart glasses like a Hololens, and you can look at this piece of equipment and transfer this video back to somebody with expertise. And this expert can now draw on their side of the screen, and get a really good remote guide instructions. So the problem with something like FaceTime is that the communication channel is not wide enough to provide really good instructions. When was the last time you actually communicated with a mechanic over the phone or over FaceTime? There’s no chance. Alan: Never. Scott: Yeah, exactly. It would probably be very painful for him to guide you how to replace something simple like a spark plug. “It’s that one right there. No, to the left. No, no, the other le

Johnna Montgomerie continued by pointing out the way that finance's opacity, both in terms of its terminology as well as its legal contexts, builds barriers for a critique that need to be addressed. Such ‘expert knowledge' however is only one dimension of finance's power. Another is its historical legacy that extends into the present. For instance, the very identity of London today is built around an image of a city of commerce and age-old political privileges of City representatives in Parliament prevail. Building from an awareness of finance's opacity and its historical legacy, so Montgomerie, it is important for the critical project to start thinking about the intersectionality of contemporary finance and its power to produce the economy in gendered and racialized ways.

Jerry Kelly, winner of the PGA TOUR Champions 2018 MItsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai on Hawaii Island was very happy as he talked with Laura Vescovi, PGA TOUR Champions Communications Manager, JR DeGroote, West Hawaii Today, Paul Arnett, Honolulu Star- Advertiser and myself. JR De Groote's WHT column today had the headline ... Kelly Birdies 18, shocks Montgomerie with 1st win at Hualalai. Here is an excerpt from JR's column that tells well how Jerry won. "Staring down the wide 16th fairway at Hualalai, Kelly sliced his drive into an usually untouched patch of a’a lava. After a short search-and-rescue, the PGA TOUR Champions newly-named Rookie of the Year dropped his ball, saved bogey, kept his head, and down just a stroke, gave himself a chance. He would still need a little help to chase down Colin Montgomerie, but that came when the Hall of Fame Scot made an inexplicable mistake of his own on 18, setting up a finish for the ages at the Champions Tour’s season-opening event. In front of a crowd of 400-plus on the 18th green, Kelly nailed a 17-foot birdie putt, turning a one-shot deficit into a victory when he watched Montgomerie miss a 6-foot par putt." It was a beautiful trophy and closing presentation on Golf Channel and like every year the Lim Family Hula Halua performing on the 18th to a large crowd. I loved Jerry comments about his long time friendship with Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Operations at Hualalai and how their friendship played a part in his win. Fun stuff.
