I’m sure you’ve heard the old axiom: Once bitten, twice shy. Or maybe you heard it another way: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I think that old saw may lie behind my skepticism of prophets. More than once, I have declared that I have never encountered anyone whom I considered a genuine prophet, in the biblical sense. I have no patience with pretenders to the prophet’s office, either, though I have encountered a few of these. One thing that made a major contribution to my skepticism was a book that appeared in 1967. The title was Famine 1975: America’s Decision, Who Will Survive? by William and Paul Paddock. The book had all the statistics, and was shocking in its conclusions and recommendations. What happened? Well, population growth slowed, and food production exploded in the years following. Development in disease resistant crops had been underway even as the Paddocks wrote their book. What is it about disasters that brings so many would be prophets out of the woodwork? It was something Jesus said, that—misunderstood—fuels this sort of thing. We’ll find it in Matthew, chapter 24.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, launched the ‘Rewild London Fund' to help make London a leader in urban rewilding, from restoring rivers to reintroducing species currently absent from the capital. One of them is the beaver and at Paradise Fields in Ealing, just down the road from the busy Greenford tube station, a family of five beavers have just been introduced to their new home by conservationist and vet Dr Sean McCormack. Together they will transform a gritty urban wasteland into a wildlife haven with ecosystem benefits for residents' wellbeing and flood defences. The beavers are just one example of the huge growth in biodiversity in the city. As Dan travels from Ealing in the West to the east of the city at The Paddocks in Tottenham Hale, he discovers that there is also growing diversity in the conservation community. He meets LGQBT conservationist Izzy Knight who shares his passion for everything wild and celebrates the ‘Queer Nature' festival at Kew, before heading back to Ealing to see whether he can spot those elusive beavers in their new home.Produced by Helen Lennard

Marla Foreman is a veterinarian, a horse trainer and a riding instructor. She's also a good friend so it was fun for us to get together for a Horses for Future podcast. I particularly wanted to interview Marla because she grew up on a ranch in New Mexico. From there she moved to Washington state, but not to the temperate coastal area. She lived on the other side of the state where rain was scarce and the amount of land she had was a mere postage stamp compared to the acreage she grew up on in New Mexico. And now she's living on the east coast near Boston. So she's learned how to manage horses in very different climates and that's what I wanted to ask her about - that and the O2 composter she had in Washington state. It turns out it doesn't matter where you are living - the concepts that guide your decisions around pasture management and horse care are the same no matter how much or how little rain you get, or how many acres you have. We begin in New Mexico and travel with Marla through years of experience managing horses. Included in the conversation is a discussion of O2 composters.

Herbicide Resistance Survey

A five-year survey of the entire Australian cropping belt has revealed a sobering picture of growing herbicide resistance in key cropping weeds. Dr John Broster from the Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation heads up a joint herbicide resistance monitoring project between Charles Sturt University, Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Universities of Adelaide and Western Australia. In a 5-year cycle the group visited 3000 randomly selected paddocks and took 2000 samples of the nation's number one weed, ryegrass, which is followed by wild radish in WA, wild oats in Queensland and NSW, and sow thistle in fourth place. The survey revealed that nationally, about 75 per cent of the populations of ryegrass are resistant to Group A ‘fop' herbicides, ranging from 99 per cent in WA and 90 per cent in southern NSW around Wagga to much lower levels in western NSW where cropping intensity is a bit lower, and in northern NSW where cropping systems are different. In the last five-year survey, the level of resistance in ryegrass around Wagga was 70-75 per cent, but John says the numbers can vary as the survey monitors different paddocks. But the most concerning discovery was the increasing resistance to the most important herbicide, glyphosate. Across Australia glyphosate resistance is 5 per cent in the populations of ryegrass, but in a region like the Liverpool Plains in NSW it was in 29 per cent of the populations that were surveyed. John says if growers lose glyphosate, they'll have to use more complex, more expensive methods of controlling weeds. He says the key to remember is that if you use herbicides, you will get resistance. By using other methods to control plants that survive herbicide applications and prevent them from setting seed, then growers will slow – maybe not stop, but slow – the development of resistance to enable the use of herbicides for longer. Paddocks are selected at random for the survey to provide an indication of what herbicides are still working and where, and what are at risk in the future. John says farmers generally are responsible in their management of weeds. Even though there are high levels of resistance in the ryegrass to selective herbicide groups, and even glyphosate, at harvest time when researchers collect the weed seeds, most populations are below one plant per square metre. So even though it's more complicated, he says they're managing populations quite well using alternative herbicides and other methods than herbicides to control the weed populations. If in life we align ourselves too closely with our neighbour, with our friends, with the status quo, could the weight of one man’s trouble cause a rippling effect to others? At R & R Property, through our extensive research, we know that the majority of our buyers are tree changers (clients leaving the city or highly suburban areas to move to the country) and where they are coming from. As a group, we generally know their habits, their dreams and their concerns. What we are finding though is that they have an ideal property style in their mind and we know that what we have with a little razzle dazzle could be what they’re looking for. But, they can’t see this. They can’t see past the privet lined creek bank, the farm rubbish lying around the paddock, the falling down old dairy. You – the seller, need to make it easier for them! So what we suggest to our sellers who may be receiving inspections, but their property keeps getting rejected is to look at it from a city persons point of view. Does your property appeal? Is it magazine worthy? Buyers today expect a well presented home in a certain style and a property to match. They would like to be able to envisage their stylish furniture in what could possibly be their dream lifestyle property. They are watching programs such as Escape to the Country on the Lifestyle channel. What your tree changers are reading is magazines like Hunter Lifestyle, Australian Country Style, Australian Country etc etc. Look at your property with fresh eyes: Does it fit the ideal? These magazines present beautiful images of homes where the furniture suits the home, a bit country but clean and modern. The front of the home is welcoming, tidy and stylish. Possibly a picket fence, which is painted, a gorgeous old style fancy gate, an attractive feature front door and a neat and tidy pathway leading to it. Gardens need to be relatively low maintenance but stylish and set the home off like a piece of quality jewellery makes an outfit. Do you have carefully placed attractive tables and chairs for morning coffee, afternoon bubbles, bickies and cheese? Or for that matter an alfresco dining area? Don’t forget a verandah space is another room and should be tastefully decorated accordingly. The paddocks should be slashed and park like if possible, with no rubbish or old building materials, dead tractors or cars etc lying around. If there is shedding or stables it needs to be well maintained and attractive, setting off the home and paddocks. If you have a river, creek or dam on your property, is it clear of weed such as privet? Is it easily accessible? They want to see it and be able to get to it without effort. Let them imagine them taking their little children or grandchildren down there for a paddle.  A cute little moored boat on a large dam also does wonders for eye candy appeal! The interior preferably should be freshly painted in light colours, with plenty of natural light coming into each room through either doors, windows or skylights. Under foot, usually timber floorboards or natural style flooring like bamboo or floating timber style floorboards is ideal. A minimal amount of attractive pieces of furniture, décor and artwork placed throughout. No clutter. All prospective buyers say they can see past mess and clutter – this is not the case. So make it easy and you’ll have far more chance of selling to this target group of buyers. These buyers are usually cashed up after a sale or living in an area where their current home could possibly sell within a week of hitting the market. Quick Checklist Front gate attractive Front fence freshly painted and attractive Pathways clear and neat and preferably attractive Gardens attractive but low maintenance, suit your home Front door, great pop of colour, attractive fittings Exterior paintwork in neutral colour and neat & well maintained Interior, clean, clutter free, light and airy, smells good. Shedding, useful and attractive, especially if it is stables Paddocks, slashed, rubbish free, fencing in good repair Creeks, river, dam attractive and easy access.   If you are struggling to do any of the above yourself or are not sure if your home fits this description please let the team at R & R Property know. We can provide you with free feedback, helpful hints and tips. We can also provide trade references to local builders and handyman services etc. R & R Property assist their clients with a regular Hints and Tips Service on their Facebook Page – R and R Property, and also hold regular Radio Segments with Great Lakes FM (101.5 FM) on Friday afternoons at 5.15pm and twice on Bucketts Radio Gloucester (104.1 FM) at 8am & 9am on Saturdays. The bottom line is that you are less likely to receive low offers on a home and property that is well presented and ultimately meets the dream. The old tag line of – “Move in – Nothing To Do” has been used for years for good reason. _________________________________________________________ Denise Haynes and the R & R Property Team have offices located in both Stroud and Bulahdelah but cover a large area surrounding them, including Gloucester and Karuah. 'Freed from Islam' Part 1, with Mostafa Nowroozi Rezvani, Iran  ------------------------ Mostafa was born into a devout Muslim family in north eastern Iran.  He came to the UK to study as a young man and led many friends and girlfriends into Islam.  He hated Jews, Christians – and Muslims, also!  But he still had a fear of death and of going to hell.   As his latest girlfriend rejected his Muslim religion and became involved in a Spirit-filled church, he witnessed miracles in her life that caused him to reach out to Jesus – and then Jesus himself appeared to him. (Mostafa died in April 2017) Website: Contact via Kingdom Come Trust ------------------------ Includes NEWS from 'Bread NEWS International' and music from: Simon Fox, (British Columbia, Canada) – 'Mapping the Paddocks', (A Winter's Tale); Janet Bates, (Oregon, USA) – 'He was Born', (The Little Spinner); Raggle Taggle, (California, USA) – 'Skulies', (Dublin Fusion); Rebekah Faith, (Florida, USA) – 'No More Chains', (Not Alone)                  Produced by Precious Oil Productions Ltd, for Kingdom Come Trust.
