Our special guest for show #059 of Torque and Chatter is the ever so vibrant Christina Vithoulkas. Christina is a keen motocross and freestyle rider. Sadly an accident back in 2018 with a mistimed jump left her a T5 paraplegic. In the weeks after the accident, Christina was determined to be the quickest person out of the Rehabilitation Centre. Guess what, she was. These days you will find Christina travelling the roads of Australia, hanging out in the drift car scene and once her s13 build is completed behind the wheel of a drift car. Honestly, I have never met such a positive human being. I can only imagine the challenges Christina has had to over come after that day back in 2018. Her zest and raw passion for life is infectious and just purely inspirational. I hope you all enjoy listening to the show, as I really enjoyed recording this one. Welcome to another episode of The Words Matter Podcast. On this episode I'm speaking with pediatric pain scientist and psychologist Dr Melanie Noel.Melanie is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Calgary, and a full member of the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. She teaches and supervises within the CPA-accredited Clinical Psychology Graduate Program in the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary. And her behavioural research lab is based within the Vi Riddell Children's Pain and Rehabilitation Centre at Alberta Children's Hospital.Melanie completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology and Dalhousie University Canada, and held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Pain Research at the Seattle Children's Research Institute. The overarching aim of her research is to understand and harness the influence of cognitive-behavioral factors, like pain memories, on children's pain trajectories using developmental frameworks. Her interests cover the areas of acute pain (such as painful medical procedures such as surgeries or vaccinations) and chronic pain in a variety of clinical and healthy populations. Her clinical interests include child clinical and pediatric psychology populations, with particular interest in the intersection between children's physical and mental health. So in this episode we talk about: public health messaging in relation to pain, in particular the influence of these messages on children. the nature and prevalence of paediatric chronic pain, and some of the key predictors for such pain states. diagnostic uncertainty for children with chronic pain and their parents. her research in the area of children's anxiety and pain memories as cognitive-affective mechanisms underlying trajectories of pediatric pain and future pain as adults. the dynamic and dyadic relationship between a parent's mood and behavioural responses to a child's chronic pain and how parents' protective responses (such as pain catastrophising) influence a child's pain experience. her strategies to reconstruct and re-frame a Childs pain experience to engender more positive behaviours and attitudes towards pain. At the end of the show you'll hear our surprise that Melanie and I share a common experience, with her having triplets and me being a triplet. So this was an absolutely fascinating talk, with someone really at the edge of knowledge in this crucial field. Melanie's sheer enthusiasm and passion for her work is a joy to listen to as well as her compassion for the participants and patients that are involved in her work.On many instances the conversation is directed to the role of parents, rather than clinicians; but this episode has huge value for those without children, and significant value even if you never see children in your clinical work.If you seek to obtain an understanding of where your adult patient's pain beliefs, emotional responses and behaviours may originate from this podcast offers a real insight.Find Melanie on Twitter @MelanieNoel If you liked the podcast, you'll love the Words Matter online course in effective language and communication when managing back pain - ideal for all MSK therapists and students (discounts for students available)Follow Words Matter on:Instagram @Wordsmatter_education @TheWordsMatterPodcastTwitter @WordsClinicalFacebook Words Matter - Improving Clinical Communication★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

And in 2009 Grace was named 'Ugandan Woman Achiever of the Year' for her strength in the face of adversity as well as her tireless work to support former child soldiers returning to their communities. Today Grace is a Social Worker in Australia and has founded a organisation called 'Bedo Ki Gen' which translates to "Living with Hope" - a organisation that provides ongoing support for returned child soldiers and their families.
The Centre was founded by Dee Hendrickx, in 2014, the non-profit organisation hopes to rehome, rehabilitate and care for abused birds. From BENONI CITY TIMES ARTICLE DATED 6 June, 2020, by Stephan Lehman: Besides providing care to birds in need, the organisation gives educational talks to schools and companies about the upkeep of birds. It also offers services such as clipping of wings and nails and beak trimming. As an NPO, Brainy Birds is reliant on donations from the public to keep their doors open. Funds donated by the public is used for the upkeep of the property, purchasing food and paying veterinary bills. With the current global pandemic and current regulations in place, the NPO has been unable to host fund-raising events. They house over 2,200 birds, and Dee tells Dustin and Lesedi, that due to the way these birds were abused, they cannot simply be "rehomed", and must be kept where they are. In addition, the owner of the property must sell. This presents both an opportunity and a challenge, as buying the property would be great, however this requires One million rand. They must fund the purchase in the next couple months. Well, there’s no nice way to put it: the Ontario government wants to make permanent the spring season for killing black bears. There’s a whole lot of reasons the Ontario spring bear hunt shouldn’t exist at all, let alone be made a permanent fixture. To explore the myriad of reasons it’s a bad idea and more completely outline the harm this hunt can and does cause, I was joined by bear expert Mike McIntosh of Bear With Us Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre here in Ontario. An administrator responsible for mortuary services at the Mamelodi Hospital has contradicted the evidence of his counterpart from Cullian Care and Rehabilitation Centre over a decomposed body of a mentally-ill patient. Nwagu Rasidzoga from Cullinan told the Life Esidimeni hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg over a week ago that the body of Joseph Gumede was transferred to the Mamelodi hospital in a good state. And had requested an emergency service because Cullian mortuary's fridge was overheating. However, Mamelodi Hospital Admin officer Daniel Buda says the corpse was already decomposed when they received it on the 16th of August last year. Wisani Makhubele compiled this report.....
Trade union Solidarity says the Department of Health in Gauteng had limited access to families visiting their mentally-ill relatives at the Cullian Care and Rehabilitation Centre in Pretoria since May last year, to hide the disaster that was unfolding. The Life Esidimeni Arbitration probing the deaths of 141 mentally-ill patients yesterday heard that the facility was over-crowded, with almost double its 150 capacity. A social worker at Cullian, Daphney Ndhlovu, told the hearings that they were instructed to take more patients than they could care for. Wisani Makhubele reports.

In this interview we talk to host, Kevin MacKenzie about his role in the new Dog Rehabilitaiton Centre Capital Campaign. Find out how this centre will serve animals in Ontario and what you can do... Through its province-wide network of 50 plus Communities, the Ontario SPCA is one of the largest, most responsive animal welfare organizations in the country, providing care and shelter for tens of thousands of animals every year. The Ontario SPCA is unique amongst animal welfare organizations in Ontario: the Ontario SPCA Act mandates the Society to enforce animal cruelty laws and provides Society Branch and Affiliate investigators with police powers to do so.
Unlike many other sanctuaries in Ecuador, fee paying tourists aren't invited to the remote Merazonia Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, but volunteers who cover food costs for themselves and the animals (including monkeys) they get to work with are welcome. Lynn Freeman meets with some of the volunteers as well as vet Louisa Bailey.
Like New Zealand, Ecuador in South America is home to unique endemic species which, on the world market, attract prices high enough to encourage animal smuggling. That's not the only threat to species though. Some backpackers lure travellers with promises of close encounters with rare animals in cages. Locals also contribute to the problem when they capture or buy animals for pets, which come to outgrow their homes or patience. The Ecuadorian government entrusts these animals to only a handful of centres - one of the most respected Merazonia Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in the deep south near the Amazonian town of Mera. Lynn Freeman speaks to Dutch journalist Frank Weijand who helped set up the centre a decade ago, and is still there, trying to help as many animals as possible return to the wild.
