This month, Lord Lee and Alex are joined by Member of Youth Parliament, Cameron Holt. At just 16 years old, Cameron's goal is to get the government to recognise it is failing children with financial literacy. He believes, that through incorporating it into the curriculum, children will increase their confidence in a post-education world, and be more wary of the dangers of online fraud and debt. In the episode, the trio unpack the issues facing children and young people. From ways schools, parents and grandparents can increase young people's interest in finances, to a petition Cameron has started which he hopes will make financial education statutory in secondary schools across the UK.The podcast rounds up with an update from Lord Lee's portfolio, including news on holdings Town Centre Securities (TOWN), Concurrent Technologies (CNC) and PZ Cussons (PZC), plus his take on how Donald Trump will affect the UK. Also in the photo are Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro, Deputy Speaker Adrian Rurawhe, Minister for Youth Priyanca Radhakrishnan, and National's youth spokesperson Matt Doocey. Only one person in the crowded photo is visibly wearing a mask. Willis told Morning Report controversy around the photo was unwarranted. "Let's be sensible about that. I think many people have taken their mask off for a photo, and that's all that happened there, and I don't think that's unreasonable." I am so happy to be sharing this powerful conversation with Yumna Hussen, co-author of Struggles of War. Yumna is a multi-hyphenate growth enthusiast, committed to influencing transformational change to ensure marginalised young people's voices are directly embedded in policy making. She is the elected Deputy Member of Youth Parliament for Birmingham and the Chair of Birmingham Aspiring Youth Council, representing 200,000+ young people in UK Youth Parliament. I would recommend you listen to Yumna's TED talk. In this conversation, we talk how it is time to grow our own collective resilience. Now's the time that we need to reevaluate our education. How now is the time that we need to remember that we as individuals have far more impact when we give ourselves the permission to seek a renewed sense of possibility for our own communities. When we work together, when we collaborate, in which we can actually develop ourselves into active citizens who want to create a difference, you are reimagining the systems that we live in with a limitless potential, and we have the agency to redefine our lives on our own terms. A must listen to!

On November 19th at 7.0pm members of EnCaf Youth and the Youth Parliament will be interviewing Henry Greenwood who has started a Green School Project in the UK. As part of the first cohort of Teach First in 2003 Henry trained as a Maths teacher at Kingsmead School in Enfield. During his time at the school he created and developed the role of Sustainability Coordinator. He assembled a group of enthusiastic Year 12 students who then embarked on an energy saving campaign that saved the school around £35,000 over 3 years, started a recycling competition in which 93% of forms took part, installed solar panels, created a vegetable garden selling potatoes, onions and carrots to staff, and carried out various other projects for which they were awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag. After 2 years as Head of Maths at Skinners’ Academy in Hackney he decided to step out of teaching in order to start Green Schools Project. The ideas and resources built up during the successful programme at Kingsmead have been used as the basis for this. There are now over 20 schools involved in The Green School Project and we are really pleased that EnCaf Youth are interviewing him so the idea can spread to Enfield from where the idea originally started. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/globalnet21/message

Olympic canoe slalom gold medal winner Etienne Stott hosts the first episode in a new series of inspiring stories from paddlers all over the UKIn this series presented by British Canoeing he'll be meeting paddlers and chatting with them to find out what inspires them into the sport and the environmental challenges they face.Etienne travels to Cromford in the Derwent Valley in the Peak District to meet the founder and boss of Peak UK, kayaking equipment. Pete Astles started paddling as a youngster in the Lake District and moved to Nottingham to train as a teenager. He moved on to making garments, taught himself to sew and has never looked back. His kit is used around the world. And Pete tells us about the secret testing that helped GB win an Olympic slalom gold medal at the Rio Games in 2016.Alongside his business, Pete is working on Paddle Peak - a great example of how a community of paddlers is trying to get more access to the waterways of the Peak District. At the moment there are relatively few places where paddlesports are welcome in an area famous for its outdoor sports. Paddle Peak is trying to change that.He wants to inspire kids to have the chance to take up the sport, regardless of income. And he wants to make sure the beautiful countryside is open to all.Pete and Etienne go to the Derwent Valley to talk about the project, go out and the water and talk about the things they've pulled out in river clean-ups - from laptops to road cones. A vacuum cleaner and a kid's slide. Pete reckons there's a ton of rubbish in a short stretch of river and how paddlers can play a key role in clearing it up. But he has a problem. There are barriers to access and Pete wants to get all river users together to come up with a code of contact. Etienne also meets 15 year old Alex McDermott who's a paddler, a member of the Youth Parliament and a force for change. Joe and his brother have been carrying out river surveys to investigate microplastic pollution. He tells Etienne he was shocked at the results. Finally Ben Seal from British Canoeing sums up what he's heard and hopes the stories have inspired other paddlers to take action. ------For more information on:Clear Access Clear Waters - British Canoeing's Environment Charterwww.britishcanoeing.org.uk---Paddle Peak Projectwww.paddlepeak.org---Cromford Mills Visitor Centrewww.cromfordmills.org.uk Peak UKpeakuk.com---Youth Parliamentwww.youthparliament.org.uk---And on twitter you can find Etienne@etiennestott

Deputy Speaker Anne Tolley feels awful that she upset Youth MP Lily Dorrance and has apologised to her, to Speaker Trevor Mallard, and to former Speaker David Carter.During a general debate in the House yesterday, Tolley interrupted Dorrance, who is the Youth MP for National MP David Carter, and asked her to speak without reading from her notes.Dorrance was giving an impassioned speech about mental health, and had spoken about losing a friend to suicide."When she interrupted me it was awful," Dorrance told the Herald last night."As soon as I sat down I burst into tears and had to leave … It was just humiliating."Tolley told Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford she's apologised for the incident, which came out of a misunderstanding."I had a discussion with the clerk at lunchtime cause I did ask are they respecting the normal rules of a general debate where you don't read speeches. I thought that he said yes they did, but apparently they didn't."Youth MP Ethan Griffiths said the Ministry of Youth Development told them to stick to their scripts, for Hansard's purposes."So we were actually instructed to write full speeches. They are just some of the young people determined to put their home city on the map for good reasons rather than bad. In 2013 Karachi was described as the most dangerous mega-city in the world where political gang warfare, terrorist bomb blasts, targeted killings, kidnapping and extortion were everyday occurrences. But in the past two years the security situation has been brought under control and citizen-led activities to reclaim Karachi's public spaces are blossoming again, particularly by young people under 30 who make up two thirds of Pakistan's population. Walls that were once covered with political slogans and hate speech are now painted over with murals celebrating the city's history and diversity. Nightlife is once again booming with arts and culture back on the stage. This spring's annual all-night Aalmi Mushaira, held in the Karachi Expo Centre, attracted thousands of Urdu poetry lovers of all ages and backgrounds. Overnight online sensation, Jackie Weaver, talks about meeting etiquette, workplace respect, standing orders and more in this latest Beyond Busy episode. Graham and Jackie start the podcast by talking about why the public was so fascinated by the online video that made Jackie famous. > My take on it is that I think there's something inherent in us that makes us want to see fairness. I think if you think about all the injustices you've seen, somebody cutting in front of you in traffic, We're not talking about huge world-changing things here. You know, where you didn't get the pay rise at work, where somebody was rude and they got away with it, all those things, and we put up with them all the time. And at that moment, I think what you saw was justice. I think that's my take on it... Either that or I've just become the nation's favourite grandmother. Jackie tells Graham that she finds this a wonderful opportunity to shed more light on council meetings. > I kind of feel I'm supposed to say it's been surreal or confusing or or confusing or frightening or out of control or whatever, but it hasn't really felt like that. I mean, it has just felt like a real opportunity that has to be just grabbed. I mean, we've been trying to get local councils noticed in some meaningful way, all of my career in local government and that's 25 years. So somebody comes along and knocks on your door and says to you: "Tell me about local councils -What's all this about?" what do you say? No, sorry, I'm busy. Jackie then shares how important it is for the youth to take an interest in local government. > How does the council know you're interested? How does the council know what you've got to offer? Over the years, we've tried several initiatives across the country to encourage young people to get involved. So we have the Youth Parliament, a lot of councils created youth councils, and all that happened was that we ended up with youth councils that looked like Mini-Me's. Now, that's not all of them. I'm sure some of them were extremely representative, but some that I know were kind of like older people in young clothes. So engaging with young people is difficult and, actually, some of it needs to come from the young people. Graham asks Jackie what she thinks makes a good meeting. >For me meetings are about decisions. My frustration with some council meetings is they're often viewed as an opportunity for an exchange of information. And I guess that there has to be some information sharing, of course, because you need something on which to base your decision. And you need some information sharing because it's kind of like a glue that puts us together that forms a relationship. But after that, it's kind of like, you know, why are we here? This is not a social event, let's get these decisions taken so we can move forward so that decisions of the council can happen without taking four years to come to fruition. Because it's that lack of decision making that takes those issues four years to be resolved. They don't need to be. Jackie then ends the podcast by sharing a productivity hack to help with ‘overwhelm'. > My head is very busy and I can feel overload. And when I when I feel that, when I feel that I'm no longer really able to capture what it is that I'm thinking about. That's when I start to write it. Because I get overwhelmed and I don't find that a comfortable place to be at all It feels out of control.
