Welcome to ScaleUp Radio! In this episode, we sit down with Alixe Lobato, the founder and creative director of Flying Duck Studio Lab, an animation studio with a unique twist. Alixe shares her journey of founding the studio with a purpose-driven mission, focusing on ethics, inclusivity, and social impact. Key Takeaways: - Alixe emphasizes the importance of having a purpose-driven mission and values ingrained from the start, attributing the success of Flying Duck Studio Lab to these foundational principles. - When it comes to building a team, Alixe values attitude over pure technical skills, believing that skills can be taught but the right mindset is essential. She specifically looks for "easygoing" individuals during the hiring process. - Drawing from past experiences, Alixe highlights the lessons learned in areas such as legal protections, operations, and finances, emphasizing the crucial role these elements play in the sustainability of a business. Founding Flying Duck Studio Lab: - Alixe's inspiration for founding the studio stemmed from a desire to create an ethical and inclusive space for animation, driven by a sense of purpose lacking in her previous roles. - From the outset, Alixe applied for B Corp certification to embed ethical practices into the studio's core values. - Starting with only four part-time team members, Flying Duck Studio Lab has since grown and established a network of partnerships. Lessons Learned: - Alixe shares insights into the importance of having clear goals, patience, and consistency, especially during slow periods in business growth. - Learning from a previous failed startup, Alixe emphasizes the significance of understanding intellectual property protections, contracts, and addressing operational, financial, and legal aspects through accelerator programs. Hiring and Team Values: - Attitude takes precedence over technical skills in Alixe's hiring philosophy. She tests candidates by presenting challenges and assesses their responses. - Recognizing the potential of neurodiverse hires in excelling at research tasks, Alixe discusses her "no ego" policy and the value of providing direct but kind feedback. Plans for Growth: - Alixe outlines her strategic plans for Flying Duck Studio Lab, aiming to develop scalable digital products for online sales. - Focused on growing the Flying Duck brand name and attraction, Alixe aims to increase the business's valuation, positioning it for potential investor interest or acquisition. Tune in for a captivating conversation on entrepreneurship, ethical business practices, and the exciting future of Flying Duck Studio Lab! “The world is your oyster. It's up to you to find the Pearls.” – Chris Gardner *Please be aware that this episode discusses depression, low self-esteem and alcohol and drug use. Shane Grocke has been what many would describe as someone who is the life of the party. He has mates on both sides of the country and gets the opportunity to enjoy living up north for half the year and then back on the EP for the other half; ocean to ocean. Livin' the dream, right? As we have grown to know, sometimes the biggest party goer can be one of the unhappiest party goers. Using alcohol and drugs to mask thoughts and feelings are all too common. It sometimes takes some dark moments to realise that changes need to be made and then the changes don't come easy. But they are worth it. The book that Shane refers to in this episode is called 'The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach To Living A Good Life' by Mark Manson. It is described on Amazon as follows: Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited--"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek. The Podcast that Shane referred to in the episode was 'The Mindset Mentor™' The podcast is "designed for anyone desiring motivation, direction, and focus in life and blends neurology, neurobiology, psychology, early childhood development and cognitive behavioural therapy so that you can understand the way your brain and body work together, because when you understand yourself, it makes it much easier to make a plan to change and succeed. When you master your mindset, you master your life." If you are concerned about someone who is struggling and finding it difficult to see their way out of grief or mental challenges, then we highly recommend Question. Persuade. Refer. QPR training, which Emma and Lain talked about in the first episode of Season 1. You can access the training at https://www.countrysaphn.com.au/mental-health/suicide-prevention-services/question-persuade-refer-qpr-online/ Type in the code CSA to take the training free of cost. What a great episode of ScaleUp Radio this this one is. A fantastic discussion with Kate Bell, who's the founder of Zip Us In It's a brilliant product and is a really great journey that Kate has been on from literally being off on maternity leave and coming up with an idea and then taking it through over eight years to being in multiple countries having sold 10s of 1000s of units of the main product. We hear about her journey where she got the product into boots early on, how she went around finding a manufacturer for her products because she was literally making it herself and sewing it together with her a mother, raising some angel finance then getting some additional financing, including venture capital, investment All sorts of wonderful things and one or two great examples of things that are just practical examples of things that she wished she'd known at the time and might well have done differently and along the way, and a trip to Dragon's Den as well. So what's not to like about this action packed episode there's so much to learn. It's such a great story from Kate. A delight to have her on and I know that you're going to love this episode. Maintaining passion and competitive intensity throughout life, especially as we age and how we must manage the realities of aging with grace, is one of my favorite topics to discuss. In this episode, I'll walk you through 14 tips and strategies to help you stay on the edge, while also avoiding the pitfalls of an overly stressful, unrealistic, exhausting approach. We'll be talking about the most important and highly effective concepts to implement in order to adapt and age gracefully, such as adopting a primal mindset, doing something that “scares the shit of you every day” a la Brian “Liver King” Johnson, founder of Ancestral Supplements, and engaging in activities that foster healthy competitive intensity and support longevity. We talk about why it is extremely important to put your ego demands aside and honor your 80-year-old self, and remain patient with the long-term journey of leading a healthy, fit lifestyle while setting long-term, big picture, intrinsic goals. Instead of offering generalities like, “I'll stay in shape as I get older,” pinpoint some specific objectives—this is because the brain responds much better to goals that are specific and measurable. Mark Manson, number-one bestselling author of The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck, explains that the emotional “feeling” brain rules over the rational “thinking” brain, even though our rational brain likes to convince us that this is not the case. Only emotion motivates us to action, but the emotional and rational brain need to work together to keep you both excited and focused over the long run. We also talk about the importance of spending some time formulating specific and detailed goals that will elicit an emotional response and therefore, can be efficiently tracked and quantified. For example, can you cough up a list of clever centenarian Olympics events you'd like to participate in when you turn 100? How about pulling from longevity research and setting up some personal benchmarks for squats, pushups, or the one-mile run? Once you have identified some challenges that you are particularly passionate about, consider using tools like a vision board (more at JackCanfield.com), mind movie (more at MindMovies.com), journaling, or your own rich imagination to create a powerful impression about where you are heading and why. With beautiful overarching goals in place, you can blend them successfully with immediate, fun, and even superficial goals. TIMESTAMPS: Brad gives 14 strategies to adapt and age gracefully. [01:44] Primal Mindset is where we acknowledge that pursuing goals and challenges is what makes us human. The good example of Brain Liver King Johnson is described. [04:08] Some studies show that we are softening. Our life expectancy is shorter than our parents. [06:53] There are benefits from sleeping ancestrally resting on the floor or ground. [09:38] The longevity in your gene pool does not necessarily determine your fate. [13:09] Cultivate a healthy, competitive intensity. [17:49] Pursue goals and behavior patterns, training schedules that support longevity. [25:25] Set long-term, big picture, intrinsic goals. Childhood trauma, her parent's brutal divorce, and two miscarriages left Ashley St.Clair feeling broken, depressed, and even guilty. But these things have also helped shape her into the strong woman, mother, wife, and business owner she is today. She says how those traumas taught her so much. Ashley knew that so many women had similar stories as her, yet it felt like no one was talking about it. This led her to her passion for supporting and building up other women through boudoir photography. She saw the need for women to be given the opportunity to rediscover themselves, to feel beautiful and sexy, to feel empowered and confident again. Along with her photography, Ashley created a Facebook community specifically for women to come and support, listen to, and love on each other. What started as something so simple is creating massive ripple effects. These women, along with Ashley, are truly beginning to heal. What does this work look like? What does it mean to heal? Ashley says this work starts within. We carry so much on our shoulders. We hold on to what people say and think about us. But the only opinion that matters is YOURS. Tune in to hear Ashley's whole story and how you, too, can begin your healing journey. Two books that Ashley and Brandi recommend are The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck, and The Big Leap. This episode is for all the perfectionists out there or anyone who has ever been scared to fail (so all of us?!) I chat through why failure is such a valuable tool, why we should value progress over the end result, climate change and bettering yourself. Perfectionism can be a really tough mindset to shift out of so if you often feel stressed, intimidated or lack self-belief when faced with a new challenge then this episode should really help! Things mentioned in this episode: The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*** by Mark Manson (book) When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi (book) The Doctor's Farmacy with Dr Mark Hyman (podcast) Thank you so much for listening!
