A podcast centered around the great outdoors. We will cover topics from hunting and fishing to trapping, reloading, cooking/grilling, and more.
This podcast discusses several key wildlife management issues in Michigan, with Jordan Hoover sharing updates on recent policy changes and ongoing challenges. The Deer Advisory Team (DAT), which replaced the previous DMI, successfully pushed through new regulations for 2025 including restoring archery doe tags in the Upper Peninsula's superior watershed and extending late archery season to January 1st. The discussion also covered controversial topics like wolf management and goose control, with Jordan explaining the complexities around wolf hunting regulations and expressing concerns about the DNR's goose gassing program. Jordan is working with legislators to make Natural Resources Commission meetings more accessible by proposing Saturday meetings and virtual participation options for UP residents, addressing the current system's financial barriers for working-class hunters to participate in policy discussions. This week Kevin and Josh welcome Pam Fleming to the show. Pam hails from southern Colorado and is starting up a new app just for outdoors persons called OpenRange social. Pam tells us about her experiences hunting and guiding, primarily in the western and south western US for Elk and deer along with her husband, how she got into it, and what it means to her. Then we get into the info about the app they are developing. Why develop the app, some of the things that have to take place in development of an app for IOS and Android. Challenges of developing an app, who is involved, what the app will be like, the input from beta teams, some of the features that the app will have at start and features to be added as it grows. Pam tells us what she believes (and we agree with her) it will take for the app to grow, and how it can be a reflection of the outdoors community. The importance of us sportspeople needing to come together to protect our heritage and our future. We discuss a lot with Pam and this is a good listen for all about the outdoors mindset and what we need to do and HOW we can join together as a unified voice. Thank you for taking the time Pam, looking forward to using OpenRange Social. www.openrangesocial.com As always, THANK YOU for listening. This week on the Overdrive Outdoors podcast, everything air guns. We have special guest Tom Simmon from Michigan's own High Pressure Pneumatics. Tom and his wife own Michigan's only dedicated Air Gun retail store in Harrison Michigan, where they sell and service PCP and other air guns. During this show we hear everything Tom has to offer about PCP (Pre Charged Pneumatic) air guns from a guy that does it for a living, everything from the types of guns, function, maintenance, performance and the pros and cons for using PCP's for hunting and target shooting. We learned about the rifles capabilities, costs, related equipment and types of projectiles as well. If you wanted to delve into the world of Airguns for hunting, target shooting or just for fun, this one is a must listen. As always, THANK YOU for listening. This week on the podcast we welcome back Rich Fowllab. We start off by talking about some recent hunts and how we've had some oddly uncommitted coyotes and very few hard chargers. We talk with Rich about his recent switch to hunting with a thermal optic, (he recently got the PTO Mission thermal scope) and his transition from going from thermal scanner, shooting NV to Thermal/Thermal. We discuss the pros and cons of NV vs thermal, target identification and how it relates to experience level of the hunter and the quality of the optic, scenarios where it is important to have positive ID (It is ALWAYS important, but some areas require an added level of target ID). We also get into talking about data taken from the Tactacam Reveal cameras. Rich has about 2 years of data now from his cameras for predators, where Kevin resets his each year. Rich has accumulated over 400 data points in those 2 years and Kevin is at only about 70. We talk about the trends, and variables that we get from that data. As always, THANK YOU for listening. This week Kevin is joined by Ross Graveling. We invited Ross on to tell us about the recent Youth predator workshop that was put on by Sportspersons Ministries with some of the funds coming from the donations provided by the Answering The Call charity hunt put on by SPI and Overdrive Outdoors. We get a rundown of how the weekend went, how many people participated and worked at the event, that went from Friday evening until Sunday morning. We get to hear about the activities that both the kids and parents got to experience, from trapping, to predator calling, seeing and learning about the tactics, equipment and processes involved from start to end of what it takes to target predators. There were a couple kids that were successful during the hunt, and we get to hear about that as well. Thank you Ross and all the other folks that came together to make this event happen. Then Kevin asks Ross about the recent NRC meeting that took place in Grand Rapids, and his thoughts on what took place and how we as sportspersons need to come together to continue to try and preserve our way of life. This week Kevin and Josh are joined by Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association public relations director, Merle Jones. We talk a bit about tournament hunting and how the tournaments went for Merle and his team. Then Merle catches us up in regards to the Michigan hunting political situation. He tells us about the status of both the lawsuit, the appeal and a possible reversal of the season that was imposed. Merle goes into detail on the when's and why's of what is going on in Lansing, with the MTPCA and MUCC. He then tells us more about the path forward that is contingent on the possible reversal of the season by the NRC, what it would mean for the appeal that was introduced by MTCPA and MUCC, and the meaning of what may happen. Thank you for joining us and giving us the updates Merle. As always, THANK YOU for listening. This week Josh and Kevin have another fireside chat. First off, we talk about weather conditions, what types of conditions we really don't care for and weighing success vs how much noise you're going to make or hunting in adverse conditions. How the noise you make may or may not affect your hunt success, and weighing that against waiting for better conditions. We discuss dealing with anti hunters or uninformed people commenting on hunting related posts (specifically a video Kevin posted when calling for bobcats), its amazing how some people don't know anything about hunting methods, or believe common methods such as calling and using bait are "not hunting", and often the comments by them are hilarious as well as the replies by our friends in the community. Josh asks Kevin about his rifle project so they talk guns for awhile, specifics of the bolt action rifle Kevin is working on, parts, the what's, whys and how's. We also delve a little bit into other types of rifle builds (AK, FN FAL), trouble shooting a build and WHY to build a rifle vs buy one. As always, THANK YOU for listening. This week on the Overdrive Outdoors podcast, Kevin welcomes Ryan Mareno to the show. Ryan is from south Louisiana, and operates a guide service called Moreno's Outfitters. In this episode, we talk about how Ryan grew up in southern Louisiana in the early years, fishing and water fowl hunting and eventually getting into deer. He tells about how he at first thought deer hunting was boring using a rifle, but then got hooked when he switched to archery. Ryan tells us about his experiences Spearfishing, going spear fishing around oil rigs in the Gulf, and all the way over to Florida. He talks about the different species that he likes to target, and potential dangers of deep water spearfishing. We then talk about being a guide, guiding for alligators, hogs and coyotes. Ryan talks about taking new hunters unfamiliar with the sport out and considerations for safety and to help the hunter be more successful. Ryan tells us about taking Aaron Lewis on guided hunts and how, even though he is a celebrity, is a very down to earth person, and is there to enjoy the hunt. We talk about what gear he prefers for hunting, how he got involved with ATN, and some of his favorite ATN gear for both hunting and law Enforcement applications. We also discuss our recent experience at SHOT show, this being Ryan's first time at this show and what he thought of it, as well as the things of interest that he was able to check out. This week Kevin and Josh are joined by Josh's brother Kyle and guest Bryan Watson of Trapline Beard Oil LLC. Kyle has recently gotten into trapping and as a person being new to it, he had a few questions, so we had a Q&A session! Bryan is originally from Michigan but now resides in North Dakota where he traps, hunts and runs Trapline Beard Oil LLC. We discuss many topics of trapping with Kyle to try and give him some advice based off our experiences including water trapping of Muskrats, Beaver (Bryan has more experience here) and land trapping (Both Kevin and Bryan have experience here). We discuss baits and lures, different types of "sets" and specifics of how we set them, Public land vs Private land trapping and the challenges of each, Incidental catches, using the wind in trapping and scent control including you, your equipment and tools, time and learning the patience to let a trap work, checking traps and the differences legally between SD and Michigan. Different uses of the trapped animals, including, you guessed it, eating them (Beaver and Muskrat specifically), dispatch methods of your catch and more. 1st episode of the new year! Welcome back everyone. On this episode Josh and Kevin start by talking about recent hunting experiences, including some specific info regarding bobcat hunting here in Michigan, as well as Josh's last hunt with his friend Todd. Then we jump into the Answering The Call (ATC) charity hunt that took place last weekend. 1st and foremost we wish to thank everyone involved for making our first event a success, thank you to the sponsors, volunteers, the kids, and all of the people that attended. We ended up earning $10800 for charity, that money raised was donated to 3 charities, all of which help people get out into the outdoors that otherwise may not be able to. We had between 140-140 entrants that toughed it out in less than desirable conditions. It was nice meeting new people, and catching up with others that we haven't seen in person for a bit. We really feel the event was a huge success, with people having fun, sharing stories, putting faces with names, good food, and a heck of a lot of prizes for everyone. This week Kevin and Josh sit down for fireside chat and a discussion of "hot topics" We talk about recent hunting experiences, Josh with deer and coyote and Kevin with lack of deer. Then get into talking about some "Hot Topics" for Michigan folks. We discuss several bills and changes that have been proposed and some voted on already. 1st one is the license fee increases. HB 6229: The bill would raise the license to fish from $25 to $38 for residents and from $78 to $88 for nonresidents. It also lower the age requirements for acquiring a fishing license from 17 to 16 years old. Hunting licenses would be changed as follows, Wild Turkey - from $15 to $23, Waterfowl - from $12 to $18, Pheasant - from $25 to $38,Deer - from $20 to $30, Bear - from $25 to $38, Elk - from $100 to $150, Residents wishing to get a combined hunting and fishing license would pay $113. It's currently $75, For out-of-state residents, fees climb from $265 to $273, For a resident adult, from $10 to $15, For a resident minor, from $5 to $8, For a nonresident, from $150 to $163. (source https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Bills/Bill?ObjectName=2024-HB-6229). During a time when hunting numbers are declining, it seems the state wants to mess with the sportsmen we have left. Then we have firearms related bills, starting with the ludicrous ban on "colored guns" Senate Bill 1134 would apply to firearms which have any colors other than black, brown, dark green, silver, or similar colors. Polehanki also created the exception for already possessed “deceptively colored” firearms before the effective date of the bill, if passed. For those who possess such “deceptively colored” firearms may face a $500 fine or a year in prison. Next would be Senate Bills 1149 & 1150: Propose restrictions on "home built" firearms and the raw materials used to make them. Even though it is legal, under federal law, for a person to make a firearm for their personal use using non serialized components, and selling them is already illegal. This would affect the sale and or possession of 80% lowers and other similar components. Senate Bill 942: would ban bump stocks, making them illegal to own, sell, or possess in Michigan—imposing stricter regulations than those governing machine guns. This comes despite the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the federal ban on bump stocks earlier this year. House Bills 6183, 6184, and 6185: Directly undermine the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act by abolishing immunity for firearm manufacturers and opening them up to frivolous lawsuits and vastly increased liability exposure. These bills also mandate the purchase or offer for sale of a trigger lock or secure storage container when transferring a firearm, which again, is already a requirememt. House Bills 6144, 6145, and 6146: Require law enforcement agencies to destroy any firearm that has been confiscated or returned during a "gun buy-back". (source https://www.nraila.org/articles/20241213/michigan-take-action-against-anti-gun-legislation-today) There are more as well, including House Bills 6222 and 6223: Require anyone selling a firearm to report any attempt by a prohibited person to acquire said firearm to law enforcement within 24 hours. Failure to do so would be a FELONY. SB 857 and SB 858: Expand "gun-free zones" in Michigan by prohibiting gun owners from carrying a firearm in the Michigan State Capitol Building, the Binsfeld Senate Office Building, and the Anderson House Office Building, with an exception for legislators. The Capitol Commission in recent years banned both open and concealed firearms carry in the Capitol and Democrat leadership restricted citizens' rights to carry in legislative office buildings by rule. This legislation would expand and codify those restrictions into state law, making it near impossible for citizens to regain the right to carry in these areas. House Bills 5450 & 5451: Mandate public schools annually post and distribute information regarding the state's mandatory storage laws to the parents and guardians of every enrolled student. (source https://www.nraila.org/articles/20241213/michigan-take-action-against-anti-gun-legislation-today) It really seems that during this lame duck session the democrats are trying to ram through a lot of restrictions. As we have said before, you voice is the sword we need to wield in these battles. Contact your reps, make you voice heard. If you don't do your part, you can't complain when your rights and lifestyle are affected. As always, THANK YOU for listening. Hot topic day. This episode Josh and Kevin dive into "hot topics". Opinions and thoughts on issues that have arrived or been brought up in discussion on social media. Issues we discuss are the dumping of several coyotes in a ditch near a local establishment and a school bus pickup/drop off spot. We go over the "BODA" rules including penalties for violations, we discuss the reason why you SHOULD not be doing this, from just a plain responsible and ethical standpoint to some unintended consequences of doing this, we talk about proper ways to dispose of animals, and available uses. We then get on the topic of terminology, why some terminology commonly used is best kept (in our opinion, isn't the 1st amendment great?!) in our circle, and not with the public as well as personal reasons WHY WE prefer to use certain terms. Then we move off the "hot topics" and get into a little bit of technical about suppressors, setting up a gas block on a semi auto, and nuances of suppressors. And lastly we talk a bit about a couple recent hunts, Kevins deer, and our coyote hunting. As always, THANK YOU for listening. This week Josh and Kevin sit down for a fireside chat. We start off discussing a little bit about the seasons, archery and rifle, and what cartridges are popular (meaning sales that Kevin has seen at his shop) specifically in terms of the .450 bushmaster and .350 legend for the limited rifle zone, where he has not seen a demand so far for the newer cartridges, the .350 seems to be leading the pack. We then get into discussing a bit about reloading, how small mistakes in terms of powder and failure to follow the manuals or other established data can be disastrous, we also talk a little about the differences between black powder and smokeless powder. Then we discuss Joshs most recent archery hunting experiences. The highs and lows, time at the new family cabin, and the value of having family together in a hunt camp. And to end we talk about the ATC charity event a bit and plans for the upcoming rifle season. This week Kevin and Josh welcome back Dave Buikema of Razor Broadheads. We start off by talking about some recent hunts, Coyotes and deer, including dealing with owls when calling, as in dodging them. We then get into deer hunting, hearing about both Daves and Josh's recent adventures. We talk about specifics of broad head performance, the what's and whys of terminal performance in actual field use, and some more testing that Dave wishes to do to find out in the future. We hear from Dave about Razor Broadheads new offerings, 125gr up to 300 grain broadheads and a new color option (the ever fashionable black) We also get into discussing the EHD issue, how it has effected the herds in different areas, including local deer farms, and how one deer farm owner has found that he can tell (according to him) which deer are infected by viewing them through thermal. We discuss as well the mindset of hunters and how it is ever so slowly changing in regards to balancing the herds in areas in terms of the buck to doe ratio. We discuss what they hunted, and fished, and how their families did and do as well. We discuss their history of trapping, and THE history of trapping, why their families used to do it, for financial reasons, and why now it no longer is a very viable form of income. But was a great introduction to the outdoors. We talk about their start and continued pursuit of predators, starting with lights, then night vision and now thermal and we discuss the gear used then vs now, gun set ups, optics and more. We touch briefly on their hog hunting experiences and eating of wild hog vs domestic. The guys tell us a bit about the differences in gaining access to property in their area for predators vs getting access for deer and waterfowl. We also talk a bit about recent hunts including a couple successful daytime hunts. we finish talking about the upcoming deer season including the youth/liberty hunt this weekend. Couple of great guys from Michigan, give it a listen. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. This week Josh and Kevin sit down for a B.S. session/fireside chat. We discuss recent hunting adventures, including Kevin getting Ninja'd, and Josh's great night getting 4 with his Uncle who has never hunted before. We talk about a recent happening where a guy had his Savage 17wsm blow up on him at the range, we discuss what COULD have been some of the reasons, and discuss other firearms related failures that have happened over the years. We both share how happy we are that fall is starting, the cooler weather, leaves changing colors and the incoming fall hunting seasons. Josh lays down a challenge to Kevin to get a deer with his bow before taking one with the rifle As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. This week, Kevin and Josh welcome Kyle Dupuis to the show. Kyle, a fellow Michigan hunter, actually asked about doing a podcast with a 1st generation predator hunter, it sounded like a good conversation so we made it happen. Kyle talks to us about his upbringing in hunting and the outdoors, including telling us about his grandma who was the known deer hunter in the family. We talk a bit about predator hunting around the country, how Michigan differs from out west or down south, mainly population and terrain. We discuss who we learned from, the shows we watched, and articles we read to get the info that is now very prevalent. And talk about why you don't see many if any predator hunting shows filmed here. We touch on quite a few facets including how he got into predator hunting, his progression in the sport, knowledge, tactics and equipment. Starting with a .22wmr rifle, hunting during the daylight only, to today's set up of thermal optics and everything in between like lights and night vision. We discuss how family and friends react to finding out about predator hunting, each of us talk about that, and specifically some of the stuff we have heard, like "I can't believe there are that many around" to "what do you DO with them" We talk about the community, and how we have all made some really good friends in our quest for knowledge, entering competitions, and sharing stories with other like minded hunters. And we finish with a little technical talk about Kyle's' experiences with the new .22 ARC both factory and reloading Follow along with Kyle at the Death After Darc facebook page! This week on the Overdrive Outdoors Podcast Kevin welcomes Lincoln Rohn to the show. Lincoln is another local west MI resident that has been very active in the outdoors. We talk about the business that Lincoln now runs, Packer Maxx, a cultipacker that is ideal for sportsmen and small farmers, he tells us about acquiring the business and the advantages of using a cultipacker for your food plots. We then discuss Lincolns upbringing in the outdoors. Then we get into his most recent hunt...Africa. Lincoln recently returned from an African plains game hunt, we ask him to break it down starting with the planning stages, finding a guide, physical prep, equipment prep, the importance of listening to your PH (professional hunter/Guide), what type of stuff was recommended and how it performed, the process of traveling out of the country, and the travel itself. Then we proceed to his experiences with the accommodations over there, the people he dealt with, the lodging and temperatures encountered (which really surprised me). We discuss the hunts themselves, the animals both hunted and seen, the dangers present, the beauty of the area, poaching and its effects on the hunting (unfortunately tragic in his experience). Lincoln talks about each species, shot placement, his choice of gun, ammo and optics and how they performed, and how his predator hunting back here helped him in Africa. We talk about the importance of these hunts to both the communities, the PH and the animals themselves, it is often misunderstood how much these hunts help all of them, by helping with anti-poaching efforts to ensuring the overall better health of a species and the land they need to thrive, to providing a form of income to the residents that are involved with the operation from cooks/chefs to guides, to the folks in the area. Lincoln does a really good job of relaying to us how special this hunt was, the impact it had on him, and how much he wants to go back again. If you have any interest in a similar trip, Lincoln provided some really good info and personal experiences from the hunters side on what you can expect from such a trip and how to properly prepare for it. Thank you Lincoln for sharing your experiences with us As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. This week Josh and Kevin welcome Nick Otto, AKA "Huntavore", to the show. Nick has a really good thing going with the Huntavore podcast (https://sportsmensempire.com/network/the-huntavore) and The sportsman's empire (https://sportsmensempire.com/network/the-huntavore). We start by talking a bit about guns...Kevin tells Josh about a few of the guns he has in the shop, a lot of them dating back to the civil war and spanish american war, and the unique characteristics of some of them, mechanically very unique, including one that was made in Big Rapids Michigan in the 1800's. We also talk a little bit about legacy...how Kevin is a strong believer that some of the work he does, and items he sells will be part of his legacy, and how much he enjoys seeing his customers having success with the products they have gotten from him. We then get into it with Nick. Nick tells us about his upbringing, getting into hunting, coming up with the Huntavore podcast and working with the Sportsmens Empire. Nick gives up some great info on wild game preparation, along with a very cool view on field to plate. We discuss everything from squirrels, wild pigs, bear, venison, wild turkey, rabbit and more, best ways to prepare them, including Sous Vide for often dry wild game meats. We discuss meat preparation of animals that can carry parasites, field care, and processing for the best cuts. Nick details for us how he processes deer starting with " in the field care" all the way to aging the meat for best results. We talk about the importance of getting the kids involved and HOW to get not only your kids, but other kids involved and make it fun and educational for them. If you are looking to expand you hunting culinary horizons this conversation is a great start to get the creative juices flowing. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. This week's episode is all about successful hunting. Josh and Kevin are joined by a gentleman that has been on with us earlier this year talking about his struggles to get his 1st coyote, Josh Smith. Josh was able to get his first coyote under his belt over the weekend with Clinton Taylor. Josh tells us the whole story of his 1st successful coyote hunt, from beginning to end. With details on how it went down, what he wants to do with his 1st coyote, how the gear performed and more. We then also discuss both Josh Mapes and Kevin's successful hunts from this past weekend as well. Josh Mapes got 2 and Kevin ended the night with 5 friday. And then we talk about gear a bit, including the new Nightsnipe elite hunter pro tripods that Josh and Kevin used for the 1st time this weekend. What we liked and an overview of the tripods themselves. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. This week Josh and Kevin welcome back Jordan Hoover and welcome Dan Featherstone to the podcast. If you've followed the podcast you've probably heard of Jordan, Dan is another U.P. resident that was also part of the recent Michigan Deer Management Initiative (DMI). Jordan and Dan recount more specific things that transpired during the DMI and the most recent meeting of the Natural Resources Commission. Jordan and Dan both discuss the issues, the info they learned, the people they learned it from and the importance of using that data to help manage our deer as a natural resource, to increase the number of healthy deer where needed and manage overpopulation in other areas as well as managing sex ratios. They then both discuss how, from what was seen, the information gathered from quality sources was disregarded by the NRC. They discuss their personal experiences (that are shared by a lot of other people that have been following this) on how the meeting was poorly run, the NRC didn't seem to have an acceptable level of knowledge about what the issues were and did not want to listen to the information that was presented. Some other things that happened during the meeting and before the meeting are also discussed, including personal interactions between NRC members, and special interest group representatives. We discuss how many deer groups in the state don't seem to be getting involved at the level we would like to see them, as well as individual hunters as a whole that aren't collectively making their voices heard. Folks, if we don't get involved NOW you may not like the future of hunting and fishing in this state. We need to work together to effect change. Get involved, get educated and be a voice that cannot be ignored. At the end of the podcast, Jordan outlines several things that YOU can do to join this effort, and the importance of doing so. Specific things that don't even take much time or effort, but can, if we come together, make a difference, but if we fail to do so, we will have a struggle to help the hunters in this state have a voice and improve the quality of our natural resource management based on science. This week on the OOD podcast, Josh and Kevin are joined by Angellia Perry, also known as "Airgun Angie". In this episode, Angie tells us about her growing up, not necessarily in a "hunting' family, but did not get into it until she met her husband. Angie then was approached by Rick Eutsler about making her outdoor activities into a job, doing product reviews. Since then Angie has delved heavily into not just hunting and shooting with PCP Air rifles (Precharged compressed pneumatic) but hunting and shooting in general. Angie tells us about hunting down in her now home state of South Carolina. Including the various animals she hunts from hogs and deer, to varmints and predators, with everything from Bows and Airguns to modern firearms. Angie also tells us about something Josh and I have not heard of before up here in Michigan, hunting deer with dogs. She then tells us about the booming armadillo population, the damage they do (and dangers they present (disease) and hunting them. We talk about hog hunting with dogs as well, and her experiences with it, and again, talk about the dangers of hunting hogs with dogs to both the hunters and the dogs. We then get into Air gun discussions, Angie relates her experiences with different calibers, power sources, pellet (bullet) choices, shot placement and different types of airguns (breakaction/spring/air/pneumatic) as well as her experiences with different brands, and practical hunting ranges with them. Angie also relates her experiences with optics, which ones are good for airguns and why, using ATN optics, how she likes to use the products and thermal vs nightvsision, and working the booth for them at SHOT Show. We finish with Angie telling us about options for people looking to get into big bore airguns, price points for them and prices for needed accessories. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. This week Josh and Kevin welcome Corey Corr to the show. Corey had responded to a post on MI coyote hunting outdoors page about being a guest, and suggested a topic of discussion. We start by talking a little bit about recent Woodchuck hunting, then get right into talking with Corey. Corey had a question about landowners NOT wanting coyote hunters due to increased deer populations, so we discussed the experiences we have had with that issue, which hasn't been a lot, but we have encountered it. We delve into why landowners would not want coyotes taken off their property and what we can do to help with other species, developing good relationships with landowners, and the importance of HELPING them with their issues, leading to continued hunting opportunities of not only predators but also other species, from varmints to deer or turkeys, which can lead to year round opportunities. We also get on the subject briefly on cooking upland birds and other wild game, turns out Corey has experience in the culinary world and we appreciate his take on that. Then we get a little off topic, but in a good way, as Corey talks to us about upland bird hunting and dogs for upland birds. We really appreciate hearing about that kind of stuff and Corey did a good job telling us about the ins and outs of bird dogs from his perspective. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. This week Josh and Kevin welcome Rashel Hubbard and Jordan Hoover to the show. Jordan is a returning guest while this is Rashels 1st time on our show. Both Rashel and Jordan were involved in the Michigan DMI. (Deer management initiative.) The objective of this initiative was advertised as putting together a group of folks from Michigan to gather data, then make recommendations to the Michigan NRC for the management of our deer herd in both the U.P and Lower parts of the state. But...as you will hear, it was a farce. The data collected and recommendations made by the folks of the DMI were, for the most part, ignored. Rashel and Jordan go into detail as to what the DMI was, what they did in terms of gathering data, organizing the data and brainstorming recommendations with each of their respective groups (Jordan was with the U.P group while Rashel was from the lower). Per Jordan and Rashel, the groups both came to consensus on their recommendations, in a fair and organized fashion, and while not everything was agreed upon in the groups they did agree on the final recommendations that they presented to the NRC just last week. And then came the slap in the face, the reaction by the NRC, from the attitude of members (some in particular) and the lack of organization by the NRC as well as a lack of being prepared for what the DMI presented (even why it was being presented). We discuss these events as witnessed by Rashel and Jordan as well as being able to see it ourselves in the live feed of the NRC meeting as streamed by MUCC (Michigan United Conservation Clubs). We then move on to discuss why this is ANOTHER example of why there is an increased distrust in the NRC due to them not following science in making decisions about our natural resources, and instead following their own agenda. The four of us also discuss WHY this is such a big issue as it relates to the future of our outdoors community, and maintaining our heritage as sportspersons, not just here but all over the U.S as we have heard from others (Coloradans for responsible wildlife management episode #154). NOW is the time to get involved, keep the pressure on and come together to protect what we all love so dearly, before we lose any more of it. Please take the time to listen and hear firsthand the type of tactics we are up against, then join us in this battle. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. This week Josh and Kevin are joined by Michael Beltzold We start by discussing some recent ground hog hunting adventures from Kevin, and Josh's recent experiences shooting a new 17wsm load. We then welcome Michael to the show. Michael is another fellow Michigan hunter, that has experience running dogs for bears, raccoons and more. We discuss dog breeds, choosing a dog for hunting, and what Michael uses. We discuss one of Michaels favorite things about using dogs to hunt, watching the dogs work (the hounding) Michael describes his enjoyment from watching when a dog "clicks" and gets into the hunt, whether its chase, tracking, treeing or baying, there is something special about seeing a dog in its element doing what they love. We talk a bit about using dogs to hunt cats, either bobcats or Mt Lions and the differences vs other animals they pursue, specifically about the scent pad, age of track, and how far a chase may be. We talk about the dangers of using dogs, specifically the dangers to the dog, and how important it can be to have the dog do what you want for the safety of the dog. Despite what some folks think, a hunting dog is a valued member of the hunters family and the dog has a job as well as the owners having a duty to protect and care for their dogs. Josh and Kevin learn from Michael about his experiences in running coyotes (as well as other animals) and how they run from the dogs, like going in a circle back to the same area (like rabbits do). Michael also talks to us about weather conditions that are good for raccoons and bad for coyotes and times of day he likes to hunt. We then delve into discussions about the importance of us sportsmen coming together no matter what your passion is, we need to respect each other's passion and come together to unite to preserve our way of life for future generations. This week we are joined by Dan Gates. Dan has been very active in a battle similar to ours here in Michigan now with proposal G, but in Colorado. Being part of the Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management (https://savethehuntcolorado.com/), Dan has some great insights on what they are doing in their battle, but also what others can and NEED to do in their states. As we discuss in the episode this is not a state specific issue, but a country wide issue in how our natural resources and wildlife are managed. The importance of using responsible science vs emotion. We talk about how as sportspersons we have an issue with "head in the sand" " I don't hunt x, so it doesn't effect me", well we are here to tell you that it most certainly WILL effect you. Dan gives out a lot of info on how the battle is being fought, who is involved, how long this battle has been going on and then some insight for others in how to get in on it, from fundraising (very important due to the amount of time involved for the people fighting) to coalitions (getting groups to join together for a common cause) down to even the type of tax statuses of organizations and how that can effect what they can and cannot do. We talk a lot about how one of the key tools we have is public education and involvement, specifically in regards to non hunters. How the opposition is using that, and what we need to do to counter it. We talk a bit about how proven the north American model has been to help sustain healthy wildlife and some of the pitfalls of not properly managing them. Dan tells us how, if each of us even spent 8 hours a year helping, we would be an unstoppable force. Please take a listen, use this as another example of why we need to join together and act, because guaranteed, the opposition is busy, and we need to do better for our future and the future of our way of life. This week, Josh and Kevin have another fireside chat. We start off by discussing recent hunts, or lack thereof. Then we start talking Kevin's favorite subject, guns and ammo. We talk about bullet performance, minimum expansion velocity, how bullet performance is dependent on construction and velocity. We talk about different bullet types and how they are suited for different applications. Josh and Kevin discuss the importance of knowing your equipment and your own limitations. If you want the best experience in your pursuits, everything is a factor, from familiarity with the controls of your equipment, how it performs in the field and also your ability to use it effectively. Kevin relates a specific hunt that showed how his experience with a rapid reload for a shotgun, learned from competitive shooting, saved a hunt vs making it an even more embarrassing story. Then Josh asks Kevin about his preferred bullets used for predator hunting in everything from 17wsm to 50bmg. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. We start off with a quick discussion about the weekends fishing trip for Crappie and whatever else would bite down by Josh. We then get to hear about Rich, how he got his start in hunting and the types of hunting he does, discussing some caliber choices, and experiences for deer using the .350 legend, which both Josh and Rich use for deer here in Michigan. We then talk a little bit about barrel life and differences in barrel construction. We go into some detail about the equipment he uses for predators. Rich uses night vision, and he tells us why and we talk a bit about the calls, firearms and such that he uses as well. including likes and dislikes of his current set ups. We get into some more detail in our continued academic research based off cell camera data and what we have gleaned from it, Rich also uses Reveal cameras and has compiled data from them in regards to predators. On this week's podcast it's a fire side "tossed salad" Josh starts off asking Kevin about how this last season archery league went and how he felt about the new arrows from ORC archery and his hopes to finally get a deer with it this upcoming season. We talk about some recent depredation hunting, and how bad the ticks are this year already. We talk a bit about snake experiences, then switch into some of Josh recent cooking experiences, including his preparing "jerk" chicken, and what is "hot" in terms of seasoning. Kevin then asks Josh to elaborate a bit on his strategies for deer season preseason scouting, what he looks for, how he uses what he finds and how it has worked for him, we talk data that we have accumulated from the Reveal cameras and compare Josh's data on deer with Kevin's data of predators , finding some similarities that weren't really a surprise to us based off what we have seen for years now, and some info that either was different or the same for both types of animals based off data from the cameras, we then finish that subject with some of the strategies Josh has used for deer on public land. We then move onto some more political and legal discussion in regards to a bill submitted to allow year round coyote hunting in MI ONLY if a hunter has purchased a fur harvesters license, and why that is a bad idea. The stats and data of fur harvesting and coyote hunting in terms of licenses and hunters numbers. We talk about how the rules are currently, how vague or confusing it is, and how some of the things that were stated were not truly applicable under the rules set by the DNR (specifically about still being able to hunt private land), we talk about the interpretation of "reasonable distance" and the possible mindsets behind the DNR leaving it vague. We then take a break from that and talk about some fishing, different species, and types of fishing that we enjoy. To finish, Kevin and Josh both discuss their "bucket list" hunts. We each have that specific pursuit, a target species, whether it be fish, fowl, deer, predators or big game that gets our heart beating faster, and in the end, what keeps us doing it year after year. This week Josh and Kevin talk about their recent turkey hunting experiences. We delve a little deeper into "the passion" that outdoorsmen and women feel, and how it's different for each of us, and why. Sometimes it is based on the experience, and while you may not have deep seated emotions about the target animal, the experience as a whole, the camaraderie, the trip, whatever, it can still lead to a memorable time in the outdoors. Kevin discusses his recent out of state hunt to Nebraska for coyotes and prairie dogs. How the terrain differences effected how he called, and what he learned from that, seeing a mountain lion, and how he could improve next time out there. And in between those stories we talk about hunting here in MI, laws, politics, costs, and what an out of state hunt means to us, despite the cost. This week we bring you an important episode in regards to the hunting and fishing future here in Michigan, but this isn't just a Michigan battle, this trend is spreading across the country. Merle Jones, from the MTPCA, joins us again as we talk about what happened at last week's NRC meeting. The DNRC voted to put a season back on coyotes after we've had a year round season since 2016. That is a poor choice for managing these predators in Michigan, but bigger than that is WHY they made that decision. It was not based on science as proposal G requires, but was based on "Social science" better known as "feelings and emotions". We talk about the specifics of what happened at the meeting, and what can be done to ensure that, in the future, decisions on how our wildlife resources are managed are based on facts and science. This is very important information and a battle we need to win, not just in Michigan but everywhere across the country. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! This week Josh and Kevin welcome Jordan Hoover and Elliot Hubbard to the show. Jordan hails from Michigan's upper peninsula where he has been hunting for over 30 years. Elliot hails from the eastern lower part of Michigan. We start off talking about some recent hunts then get right into it. Both Jordan and Elliot have been very active in various sportsman's issues here in the state, mainly deer, but also now the predator hunting issues. Jordan does a good job of breaking down the various issues that have affected the Michigan deer herd, from habitat issues to predation, explaining to us in detail some really good info, as well as possibilities to help our herd. We then discuss the issues facing the predator hunting community, some of how the issue came up, what is at stake, and what everyone can do to help, and to realize that it's not just the closed season at stake, but just a small part of the battle against our heritage in the outdoors. This week Josh and Kevin are joined by Kelsey Shetler. Kelsey is a 1st generation cattle rancher and hunter from East Texas. Kelsey shares with us growing up down in Texas, getting into working with cattle, and how she got started in predator hunting. Kelsey has been doing a great job on not just predator hunting, but hunting competitions down there, and taking some great pics and videos in the process. We ask her about one of the things that drew us into following her on social media, her raccoon Maizie that accompanies her often while she is hunting. Kelsey also shares with us insights from raising livestock including cattle and now zebras, and the effects of predation, how important it is to manage them for sake of the livestock, but also, how managing a population year round can help reduce disease and other issues in the predator species. We discuss her predator hunting gear set ups, the types of sounds she likes to use throughout the year, stand length, and a bit about what it took her to win in tournaments down there. She also shares with us information about hog hunting down there, including telling us about the damage that the feral hog population can do to a farmers crops and tactics they use. (they get to do some fun stuff down there that we can't up here). As always.. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! This week, Josh and his friend, Todd, are live from the field on a Friday night. Todd tells stories about hunting when he was younger, and the guys discuss why Todd is now getting back into hunting after a bit of time off. They talk about Todd's choice of weapon, scope and ammunition. Of course we have the typical banter back and forth that would happen on a regular Friday night with your buddies. Between stands, Josh describes the events that took place, setups and sounds used. We get insight from Todd on things he is learning while out calling, and we talk about the little communication errors that could have cost us a few coyotes. Shorter episode this week, but we hope you enjoy it. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! This week, Josh sits down and talks to Minnesota resident Bucky Lindgren. Bucky has been a predator hunter for quite some time, and he tells us all about how he got involved in it. Bucky talks about the calibers he prefers to use, rifle scopes he likes and all the changes in gear through the years. Bucky tells us about the terrain they hunt in Minnesota and how he hunts that terrain. They talk about using vocals to hunt coyotes, which both prefer over using distress sounds. Bucky also talks about season dates, with Minnesota having a year round season but a limited night hunting season. This is a fireside chat, just 2 guys talking about what they love to do, and we hope you enjoy it! As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.
