We dive into the controversial Scott prototype at Unbound, argue over what makes the perfect gravel bike, and reveal the top picks from our new Road Bike Buyer's Guide. Last week Josh missed the pod, but this week it's Logan Jones-Wilkins' turn. He is currently on the ground in Emporia, Kansas for Unbound 2026, but his Starlink connection failed. That leaves host Mike Levy, Lisa Charlebois, and Josh Ross to hold down the fort. Without Logan to set the record straight, the crew dives into the newly released Specialized Crux. Things quickly get heated as Charlebois and Ross defend nimble gravel bikes with 40mm tires, while Levy argues we all need slacker front ends and suspension. Plus, Levy shares his newfound love for the Garmin 1040 Solar, which leads to a shocking confession from Lisa about how she listens to music on ultra-rides. We also analyze the massive 32-inch wheels Cam Jones and Robin Gemperle are racing on their Scott prototypes at Unbound, and finally, Josh breaks down his testing methodology and top picks for the 2026 Road Bike Buyer's Guide. The Giants could land a rare defensive weapon in Caleb Downs at No. 5, but they could also pass on help in the trenches or a safer draft path if the knee concern is real. If Downs is that special, is this the right swing for the Giants, or are they making the most important pick on the board harder than it needs to be?Follow us on Spotify and, if you enjoy the show, leave a 5-star review on Apple. That support helps more Giants fans find the show. This episode is built around the biggest argument from the live show: should the Giants even consider Caleb Downs at No. 5? Drew and Rob dig into the Ohio State pro day fallout, Downs pushing back on the knee rumor, and Pat McAfee's report that multiple NFL teams were not deterred by what they saw medically. But that still leaves the real Giants question untouched: if you take a safety that high, he has to be a difference-maker on a rare level. That is the center of the debate here. Is Downs worth a bet this aggressive, or is the smarter move to avoid the risk and go another direction? That tension carries the whole episode. The show pushes back on the Francis Mauigoa-at-five idea, questions why the Giants would project a player to another spot that early, and leans harder toward the Field Yates path of Caleb Downs in Round 1 with interior offensive line help later. There is also clear trade-down support in the conversation, because if the Giants do not feel fully sure about taking a safety this high, moving back could be the cleanest answer. That is why this episode works: it is not just about whether Downs is talented. It is about whether he is the right kind of talent for this exact pick and this exact roster. The rest of the show supports that main debate instead of replacing it. The hosts cover Mansoor Delane's big pro day and why he looks like the top corner in the class, the Shelby Harris visit and what it says about the defensive front, plus the quieter additions of Zach Triner and Cam Jones. There is also an update on Kayvon Thibodeaux, with the sense that the Giants are not looking to dump him, along with quick hits on James Hudson landing in New England and the possibility that the Giants open 2026 on the road because of the MetLife World Cup transition.Merch: https://2giantgoofballs-shop.fourthwall.com/Support: https://buymeacoffee.com/2giantgoofballsAll episodes: https://2giantgoofballs.buzzsprout.com/Send us Fan MailSupport the show
Cam Jones is on a tear. As the reigning Unbound champion and taking top honors at the Life Time Grand Prix in 2025, he's a man on a mission. This conversation comes at the tail end of Cam's summer back home in New Zealand, on the verge of his upcoming trip to North America to kickoff the 2026 campaign. Cam's story is one of perseverance. It's not easy to make the trip from the other side of the globe to try your hand among the world's best, but Cam did that starting in about 2022 in the pursuit of the mountain bike world cup circuit. Through some misadventures, perhaps a trip to a detention center through a misunderstanding and stern border patrol agent, he ultimately found his way to the wild card spot at the 2025 LTGP and of course the rest is well recorded history. The 2025 Life Time Grand Prix finished with a bang thanks to a razor-thin margin in the men's field and a last-minute course change due to weather. Payson is joined by Paige Onweller to break down how it all played out. Paige was sidelined from the season after she was hit by a car a couple of months ago, but as a Bentonville resident, she knows the route better than anyone, including the pros who had planned to race the 100-mile route before it was scrapped for the completely different 50-mile route at the last minute. They talk about the many-sided tactical battle in the women's race and how wild card rider Cam Jones managed to outfox three-time Grand Prix champion Keegan Swenson and former WorldTour rider Simon Pellaud to take the series overall title. Spoiler alert: the fireworks started long before that bunch sprint for the finish. Plus, Paige talks about her injury and how she's hoping to turn the trauma of the accident into advocacy for rider safety on the roads. Cam Jones has had a pretty memorable 2025 season, rocketing from Grand Prix wild card to winner of Unbound. And yet, that dramatic turn of events pales in comparison to his 2022 season. For his final year as a U23, Cam planned to race every World Cup in the hope that it might secure him a team for the start of his Elite career. After a promising start to the season, things went downhill fast. Kidney failure, Covid, and a five-day stint in a Belgian detention center followed, and somehow, that barely scratches the surface.Cam joined Payson in the studio in Durango to talk about that unforgettable 2022 season, how he ended up racing gravel in the U.S. after starting a forestry career in New Zealand, and his childhood in Nelson. They also talk about the logistics of traveling to Grand Prix races that American riders don't have to think about, and how he's approaching Leadville after his decisive and unexpected win at Unbound.Instagram: @withpacepodYouTube: Payson McElveen Email: howdy@withpace.cc

This episode was such a fun mix of science, emotions, and hot tubs that could cook a turkey! We started with some thoughts on Western States, less than 3 weeks out from the race. Does embracing the stage also mean embracing social media posts telling you that you aren't being picked to perform well? Our argument channeling Tyrese Halliburton of the Indiana Pacers: the “noise” can be performance enhancing if you have fun with it!The main science topic was a WILD study on the hot tub improving hemoglobin levels, resting heart rate, and altitude performance. It's “wild” because the hot tub was set astonishingly high, with participants staying in for an astonishingly long time. I like my participants like I like my eggs: hard-boiled. We talk about what it means and why passive heat training might be the easiest advanced training intervention that goes beyond the basics. And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: a training trip out to the Western States course, Kilian Jornet searching for a pacer, Cam Jones consuming 185 grams of carbs per hour on his way to winning Unbound Gravel, Jessie Diggins' amazing poem on fueling her body to take a hit, a study on ketones and altitude that found no benefits, using downhills to improve strength for flat running, and a genetic link between muscle stiffness and strains, plus a Q+A on the new OTQ standards getting faster for men (we don't like it), whether to GO FOR IT if going for it might not lead to your big goals, a hypothetical about gold medalist Kristian Blummenfelt at a mountain race, and heat and family planning. The episode finishes up with questions about alcohol and celebrity-flavored bathwater. It'll make sense soon. Maybe. We love you all! In the first half of our Unbound recap, Payson sits down with men's 200 winner Cam Jones to talk about his stunning breakaway with TudorPro rider Simon Pellaud that stuck from mile 50 all the way through to a massive course record. Cam went into the race hoping to earn a wild card slot in the Grand Prix and left the race as a favorite for the series overall. He chats to Payson about his decision to stick to Simon's wheel, the camaraderie they built over 150 miles together, and how he managed to outfox the former WorldTour breakaway specialist for the win. He also talks about that now-famous video of his mom doing hand-ups at the aid station, his aggressive fueling plan, and how his effort this year was noticeably less than last year. I mentioned this on the show but I gotta hand it to my boys Tyler and DJ for holding down the fort last week while the rest of us bums skipped town for other things. Penn State must rally after a crushing fourth-quarter loss to Ohio State last weekend when they travel to Bloomington to face the Indiana Hoosiers. To understand what type of opponent is awaiting the team on Saturday, host Thomas Frank Carr sits down with Zack Osterman of the Indianapolis star on the BWI Daily Edition. They'll discuss the season for Indiana, the offensive issues, and the reversal of fortune for the Hoosier's defense. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK After a 3-0 start, Indiana is now 3-5 and took a five-game losing streak into its bye week to end October. So what has happened with the team? Osterman says the issues start with the offense. The team has failed to score points, putting even more pressure on the defense, which has underperformed. Find out how the situation with first-year offensive coordinator Walt Bell and where the trouble spots are for his offense. Osterman thinks that the issue has gotten bad enough that starting quarterback Connor Bazelak's job may be up for grabs coming into this game against the Nittany Lions. He and T-Frank discuss what a quarterback change could mean for the offense and how it operates. Next, they discuss the situation at receiver, running back, and finally, offensive line. Unfortunately, Osterman doesn't paint a rosy picture for Penn State's next opponent. Defensively, T-Frank has always enjoyed watching head coach Tom Allen's defense. But this season, something seems to be missing. Despite having the majority of players back for 2022, the unit has underperformed. So what's the issue? Osterman points to the defining concepts of Indiana's defense as the problem because certain aspects of the game aren't happening this season. Next, they discuss the impact of Cam Jones and his status for this weekend before expanding that conversation to involve the front seven. He says something special is missing from that group, so Osterman and T-Frank discuss the successive impact of that unit affecting the secondary. T-Frank wraps up the show by asking Osterman what he thinks of Penn State and what he thinks will decide the game's outcome. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
