Forest ecologist Suzanne Simard has long been fascinated by the sharing of natural knowledge. From the interconnected root systems she studied in her book Finding the Mother Tree to her ongoing work as an educator, Simard has learned to see the importance of cooperative efforts to share resources and knowledge. Joined in conversation by Seattle-based nature journalist Lynda Mapes, Simard expands these connections into a considerate exploration of the elaborate cycles of forest ecosystems, the challenges they currently face, and the intergenerational value they can provide through her new book When the Forest Breathes: Renewal and Resilience in the Natural World. Raised in a family of loggers committed to sensible forest stewardship, Simard has watched as modern practices and timber companies have left forests vulnerable to damage and depletion. In her research, Simard explores the finely honed cycles of regeneration forests inherently use to maintain themselves. From mushrooms breaking down logs to dying elder trees passing their genetic knowledge to younger growth, When the Forest Breathes presents these cycles as a key component in the protection and preservation of our forests. Working closely with Indigenous communities and the models of responsible forestry they've upheld over time, Simard examines the damage caused by industrialization and wide-scale human intervention– particularly the impact on the overstory's mother trees that are responsible for sharing intergenerational wisdom and supporting new growth. As Simard seeks to understand the importance of stewardship and how older lives can facilitate the conditions for new growth to flourish, she considers similar patterns of loss and regeneration in her own life. Savoring her final days with her ailing mother and watching her daughters grow into adults, Simard draws thoughtful parallels around what caretaking looks like within the forest and within our own communities. Animated by wonder and the urge to honor the tools that trees have honed over generations, When the Forest Breathes aims to use the lessons of the natural world to encourage paths of adaptability, resilience, cooperation, and valuing our forests. Dr. Suzanne Simard is the New York Times bestselling author of Finding the Mother Tree. She is a Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia, where she leads The Mother Tree Project and co-directs the Belowground Ecosystem Group. Dr. Simard has earned a global reputation for pioneering research on tree connectivity and communication and the productivity, health, and biodiversity of forests. Her work has been published widely, with over 170 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature, Ecology, and Global Biology, and she has co-authored the book Climate Change and Variability. Her research has been communicated broadly through three TED Talks, TED Experiences, as well as articles and interviews in The New Yorker, National Geographic, NPR, CNN, and many more. She lives with her family in the mountains around Nelson, British Columbia. Lynda Mapes is a journalist, nature writer, and the author of six books on the natural and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest. Her previous publications include The Trees are Speaking and Orca: Shared Waters Shared Home. She was previously an environment reporter for the Seattle Times, focusing on nature, natural history, Native cultures and governments, and Pacific Northwest environmental news, where she was named a finalist for a team award for the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting in 2025.

Simeonette Mapes-Crupi was a beloved high school history teacher in Brooklyn, known for her compassion, generosity, and fierce dedication to her students. Nicknamed “Mommy Mapes,” she went above and beyond to support the teens she taught, often dipping into her own pocket to cover their graduation costs or prom dresses. She lived a life grounded in kindness, faith, and hope — one she shared with her husband, a fellow teacher, as they planned for their future and celebrated annual trips to Disney. But in the summer of 2012, just days before their fifth wedding anniversary, that hopeful future came to a sudden, violent end.On the afternoon of July 5, 2012, Simeonette was found brutally murdered in her Staten Island home. The scene suggested a robbery, but detectives quickly noticed inconsistencies that hinted at something more personal — more deliberate. As the investigation unfolded, secrets began to surface: about the marriage, about hidden relationships, and about the final hours of Simeonette's life. The deeper authorities dug, the more tangled the truth became — and the more haunting the question lingered: Who would want to kill Simeonette Mapes, and why?Sources:Dateline: Secrets of the Sliding Door S33 EP 27A Date With Dateline: Secrets of the Sliding Doorhttps://www.oxygen.com/new-york-homicide/crime-news/jonathan-crupi-kills-teacher-wife-simeonette-mapes-crupihttps://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/killer-dating-profile-outrages-victim-family-new-york-city-staten-island/2028855/https://moviedelic.com/simeonette-mapes-crupi/https://www.nbc.com/new-york-homicide/video/wheres-the-food-jonathan-crupis-suspicious-behavior-after-the-death-of-his-wife/OXYN581829809https://moviedelic.com/jonathan-crupi/Send us a textEmail Residue: residuepodcast@gmail.comFind RESIDUE online:Instagram: @residuepodcastTik Tok: @residuepodcast Facebook: Residue:A True Crime Podcast Credits: RESIDUE is Hosted/Produced/Researched/Edited by Chrissy Champagne THEME SONG: "Dance Of Death" by Purple Planet Music collection written and performed by Chris Martyn and Geoff Harvey. For the 2024 Presidents Day Film Buff episode, the featured film is Truth (2015). In this episode, Peter explores the filmography of writer-director James Vanderbilt, who is prominently featured in the podcast. He also delves into the historical context of the film and its significance. Truth (2015) is a political drama based on the 2005 memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power by journalist Mary Mapes. The film follows the controversial events surrounding a 2004 60 Minutes report on CBS, which questioned then-President George W. Bush's military service in the Texas Air National Guard. Cate Blanchett stars as Mapes, the producer of the segment, while Robert Redford portrays veteran news anchor Dan Rather. As the story unfolds, Mapes and her team face intense scrutiny when the authenticity of their key documents is called into question, leading to a media firestorm, professional repercussions, and a broader discussion about journalism, politics, and corporate influence over the news.

What's the only invasive carp species reproducing in the Great Lakes? Thanks for joining us for another episode of highlighting change makers and their inspirational work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this episode: Why worry about the presence of grass carp in the Great Lakes? What is electrofishing, and how does it combat invasive species? Revising protocols for effective grass carp removal Hear from Bob Mapes - a Grass Carp Strike Team Crew Leader for the University of Toledo. Bob talks about the grass carp removal project, aimed at eradicating the invasive grass carp species in the Great Lakes. The primary control method is electrofishing, where electricity immobilizes the fish for capture. Research shows that about 90% of grass carp captures occur within the first 17 minutes of electrofishing, leading to a protocol change that shortens the electrofishing time from 30 minutes to 22 minutes. He also highlights the importance of this research in revising grass carp removal protocols and improving efficiency. Click play now to soak up what he has to share! Violet Grimm knew something was wrong when Ruthie, her tenant, came to the door. She looked tired, and she seemed preoccupied and nervous. She was hoping that Violet's husband, Howard, could help her with some luggage. H.J. Mapes was the baggageman on the train that night. He'd been with the Southern Pacific Railroad for 23 years and had managed thousands of bags, so he knew right away that something was wrong with the large steamer trunk that had been loaded in Phoenix. He noticed a strange smell and then when he looked closer, he was sure that it was leaking blood. Don't forget to send in your nomination for the Podcast Listener Of The Year award! Delve into the urgent and critical issue of cervical cancer prevention with Dr. Linda Eckert.  Cervical cancer claims the lives of almost 350,000 women each year, a staggering toll that is compounded by the fact that the disease is nearly 100% preventable. Dr. Linda Eckert, a leading expert in cervical cancer prevention, brings her wealth of experience to the forefront in her book, Enough. Dr. Eckert intertwines evidence-based information with the poignant narratives of women who have battled cervical cancer, using their experiences to advocate for change. The book provides a compelling exploration of the barriers — cultural, gender-related, and political — that hinder women's access to healthcare and contribute to the devastating consequences of this preventable cancer. Dr. Eckert addresses the issues with clarity and compassion, making for a talk that's accessible to everyone from the general public to those passionate about global health, women's stories, and the pressing need for health equity. Be part of a conversation that goes beyond statistics and aims to break down barriers, address systemic inequities in healthcare, and create meaningful change that could greatly reduce cervical cancer's unnecessary death toll. Linda O. Eckert is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology with an Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of Washington and an internationally recognized expert in immunizations and cervical cancer prevention. For over thirty years, Dr. Eckert has worked at Seattle's Harborview Hospital, treating people from all around the world. Frequently in the spotlight for her expertise in HPV vaccinations and cervical cancer screenings, Dr. Eckert is passionate in her drive to eliminate this deadly disease.  Former freelance journalist Diane Mapes writes about public health, scientific research and the cancer experience for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, she went from covering dating, lifestyle and singles issues to science, “cancer whispering” and patient advocacy. A former humor columnist for the Seattle P-I and the author of hundreds of essays and articles for NBC News, CNN, MSN, Seattle Times, etc., she also writes fiction (and music!) and is currently hawking a funny novel about the cancer industrial complex.  Enough: Because We Can Stop Cervical Cancer Third Place Books
