What are some of the major concerns in your life? What is something God is calling you to care about today? In his sermon “Caring Enough to Change” centered on Nehemiah 1:1-2:8, Doug Reed shared how Nehemiah cared enough about the community that God placed him in that he helped lead the charge to rebuild the city walls in only 52 days that had been left in ruins for over 144 years. Nehemiah was called by God to act, and he obeyed! What issues in your life is God calling you to act upon? How might we affect our city with the gospel in a drastic way simply by placing our faith in Christ and trusting in him?

Jamie and Jerri interview Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Gregory Hutchings, Jr. and Georgetown professor Douglas Reed about the new book they are releasing soon titled, Getting Into Good Trouble at School: A Guide to Building an Antiracist School System. Hutchings and Reed discuss the six steps to creating an antiracist school system in this podcast. This provocative and eye-opening discussion helps listeners understand how school systems and policies have led to discrimination by sharing clear examples of discriminatory policies. Hutchings and Reed believe that racism is not always intentional, but anti-racism must be; getting into good trouble is the way forward. Begin questioning and changing institutional practices so that all students find success by listening to this podcast. --- ABOUT OUR GUESTS Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. returned to Alexandria in July 2018 to serve as superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). He recently wrote Building the Federal Schoolhouse: Localism and the American Education State (Oxford University Press, 2014). The book examines how changes in the federal role in public education have reshaped local politics and how, jointly, federal, state, and local actors have constructed the American education state over the past 50 years. "Politics of Proficiency: Common Core and the Inequalities of American Education." is the title of his second book. Dr. Reed is the co-founder and director of the Program on Education, Inquiry, and Justice at Georgetown. This recently-created program views education and the teaching arts as a central element of the liberal arts. Episode #30 - Felix Rommens is 97 years old. If you are wondering what keeps him young and loving life at The Village of Winston Park in Kitchener, it has to be his art. Erin Davis and guest co-host Doug Reed welcome Felix to the green bench to share in a conversation about his art and about his hearing impairment, which has formed the life is living today. Nearly 50% of people 75+ have trouble with their hearing. "Being deaf, I was kind of a loner. So, in order not to get completely bonkers, I started working with my hands and my mind." - Felix Rommens Felix was working in Belgium at the highest he was able to go in office work (hating office work), so he decided to move the whole family to Canada at the age of 41. A visit to the employment office on the day he landed and went directly into the building process, building homes, working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. On the 7th day, he would do work at his own home. When he retired at 71, he looked forward to the arts and crafts that he enjoyed. "The whole idea about my art is to keep something for tomorrow, so you keep going." - Felix Rommens "I have only one life and I want to live it to the end." - Felix Rommens finds projects he looks forwards to with art and continues to use his hands as he did when he was 20. Felix has the use of a woodshop at the Village to keep active in his art but also works in his suite, finding a way to continue working on projects. "Keep on the positive side, think of all the good things that have happened to you." - Felix Rommens Felix was captured by the Nazis during World War II, made to work in factories, awaiting liberation after 2 years in Germany, and then ran at the age of 18 on foot to make it home. His father was an officer in the Belgian army, shot at 40, and Felix as a child had to take care of him for the next 15 years due to his injuries. Keeping an eye on the structural components of a 189-foot historic chimney has traditionally meant building scaffolding and sending people to precarious heights – a time-consuming, costly, and dangerous endeavor. Doug Reed of Meridian Associates talks about how a small drone equipped with a high-resolution camera quickly collected hundreds of images to provide a comprehensive assessment of the structure.
There have been many misconceptions and outright lies told in the media as to what is happening in the Middle East. As Christians, we know God is setting things up for the entrance of King Jesus. Season 5 of the Cultivation Podcast is all about words to live by. This episode dissects “Adventure and Fortitude” with special guest Doug Reed. Doug, as a mentor and brother in law to Tom, discusses how adventure is a mindset and gives tips on how to live a life of fortitude. Adventure is defined as an undertaking involving danger and unknown risks. Adventure means rejecting comfort for finding something new, so a life of risk ends up a life of victory. Doug says he views adventure as a mindset of how he lives his life. He says choosing to live a life of adventure opens up our mind to embrace life. It causes you to view possibilities instead of problems, an adventurous mindset looks for opportunities instead of what can hold us back. Doug goes on to say that an adventure mindset is taking a risk but being mindful, not jumping blindly. Tom adds that what holds us back is that fear of the unknown, but the pair points out that losing your sense of adventure in life makes life dull, so you have to work at it. Adventure doesn’t just happen, you have to cultivate an adventurous mindset so you can enjoy life. Adventure is uncomfortable, costs something, and has an unknown outcome. Doug adds that he has learned a life of adventure requires learning to suffer. When you live a life of dreams and adventure, you have to learn to suffer because it’s the only way you can keep living that life. Fortitude is defined as strength of mind that allows a person to encounter danger or bear pain with courage. People who have the fortitude to suffer are celebrated because it brings validation. Doug notes that fortitude is mental toughness that is earned, not given. People who earn things through fortitude have built the muscles in their life to get things done. The pair gives the keys to developing fortitude: Be willing to fail. Recognize you will fail and be willing to learn from it. Focus on what we can control. Don’t worry about what you can’t control. Make sure those around you have the right mindset. Those who influence you need to have a grit because it can rub off on you. Learn from fear. Fear shouldn’t be discounted, build courage by learning from your previous experience. Expect adversity. If it’s all easy, it’s not worth anything. Don’t be easily offended. We let other people dictate the outcome instead of owning it. Do it afraid.

Physically or virtually, the bench invites us all to sit alongside a senior, share a conversation, or give and offer advice. It challenges the stigma seniors face; the ageism still so prevalent in society. It reminds us of the wealth of wisdom our elders offer and in doing so, helps restore them to a place of reverence. "The greatest untapped resource in Canada, if not the world, is the collective wisdom of our elders." -Ron Schlegel This podcast is brought to you by Schlegel Villages, retirement & long-term care homes in Ontario, Canada. #ElderWisdom | Stories from the Green Bench is produced by Memory Tree Productions Learn more about our host, Erin Davis, at erindavis.com Learn more about co-host, Lloyd Hetherington Learn more about #ElderWisdom at elderwisdom.ca

I met Doug Reed on my first trip to Israel and we became as close as brothers. I had so much fun hanging out with my friend and talking about what the Word of God has to say about Faith vs. Fear. It's such a timely message in light of what's going on in our world right now. I pray your faith is strengthened and you're filled with peace and the presence of God as you listen. Pastor Doug Reed is the lead pastor at Bridge of Hope in Youngstown, Ohio. He is also the area representative for the Ohio Church Multiplication Network, helping plant churches in the Mahoning Valley. Loyalty programs are well known in the South African environment. And with banks and insurance companies at the heart of the rise, Ebucks, UCount, Multiply and Vitality, to name a few, have become household names. But these are all tied to big business, and there's a gaping hole in the small to medium enterprise. And this is where serial entrepreneur Doug Reed's Loyalty Specialists comes in to play.
