Waste, Fraud and Abuse: it is either the new right-wing code for trickle-down economics, or another sign of Trump's dementia. Republicans want us to believe that a $4.5-TRILLION tax cut for rich folks and corporations can be covered without damaging services needed by the rest of us. Their "theory": we can cover it by having Elon eliminate WF&A, plus enact bigly tariffs on our allies and China. But just in case, Trump asks that the federal debt limit be increased by $4-TRILLION. Meanwhile, Trump keeps saying he won't cut Medicare even as House Republicans signal a cut of $800-billion or more. Trump is promising to raise tariffs on Mexico and Canada in a week, posing a direct threat to Michigan's economy and the jobs of untold thousands. Another part of Trump's balance the budget plan: sell U.S. citizenships for $5-million. We simply can't imagine that a hostile government would use that as a way to embed spies into our society. (All of this is coming from a President who added 8-trillion-dollars to the national debt in his first term, and somehow manage to drive multiple casinos into bankruptcy.) On the plus side, the Musk-Trump Chain Saw Massacre continues to provide gainful employment for a lot of lawyers, with the count of lawsuits challenging them closing in on 100. So far, the plaintiffs are winning as the courts push back against the massive constitutional violations of Musk and the Muskrats. Governor Whitmer lays out her hopes and dreams for the upcoming legislative session, even as she draws some flack from Democrats unhappy with her cozying up to Trump and state House Speaker Matt Hall. And Speaker Hall has done a 180 on applying the Freedom of Information Act to the Legislature and Governor. He was, as John Kerry memorably said, for it before he was against it. Making a triumphant return to the podcast is journalist/philosopher John Lindstrom. John covered Michigan State government for more than 42 years before retiring in 2023. For the last two years, he has been a Detroit Free Press contributing columnist. His columns offer rigorous political analysis, of course, but more than that John offers readers the tools to build their own scaffolding. He doesn't tell readers how to think — he suggests ways to think. John is also the unofficial Walking Wikipedia of Michigan's political history dating back to the mid 1970s. Joining him is another veteran of Lansing journalism with a long history covering State of the State messages. Former Associated Press reporter Cindy Kyle covered her first SOS back in 1977. Now retired, she has followed state government ever since including during her 18 years directing communications for our friends at MSU's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research and at the Michigan Political Leadership Program. Tez a d Chip talk to amazing author Alyson Foster about her book, which recently became a movie, called God is and Astronaut. We learn about creative writing, why fiction is hard for some people to understand, and what the movie option process is like. Plus Trump and Elon continue to make mistakes as the ravage the government, kids become their own lawyers, and the government is doing corruption on live tv. Also, black history month gets a new champion, and Bryan gives us our Valentine's card.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/chipchat--2780807/support.
Another Republican-backed bill to get rid of school zone speeding ticket-generating cameras is having a better go of it in the Georgia General Assembly this session, and as someone who's been the recipient of one of their tickets, I'm not not so sure I'm for or against this ban. On the one hand, I definitely support safety for pedestrian kids near schools (and anywhere), but there've been a lot of bogus charges and cities are raking in money hand-over-fist year after year, which means they're not slowing people down in these zones. Isn't that the goal? One metro Atlanta city mayor made that point while his city's raking in that dough, but maybe he's not the poster child for this cause. It seems his council believes he's been using some of those city funds for some personal (and expensive!) international travel. I digress.--------What's up with these sudden discussions about a "lack" of masculinity in the Democratic Party? Right wing radio host Clay Travis believes there are none.Obviously, his opinion comes with the caveat that he's prone to just taking digs at liberals for just about anything, but also his man crushes are riddled with spray tans and guy-liner. Clay's quip, though, even got my Democrat friend discussing the party's appeal to "masculinity," on social. media. I even wandered into a tweet about this where Democrats are accused of not even trying to "appeal to men (particularly young or white ones)." Like, maybe, if men (particularly young or white ones) just - I don't know - paid attention to what's going on they'd make informed decisions when voting vs being swayed by disinformation and football or NASCAR photo ops? Just spit-balling here.--------New polling reveals, speaking of appeal, that Donald Trump no longer does to the majority of voters, with a particularly steep drop among the under 30 and the 30-44 year old voter. Honeymoon's over, honey-glazed turkey.--------Lastly, "Money with Katie's" Katie Gatti Tassin went in on the trivial nature DOGE, Elon and "the Muskrats" are shredding jobs that'll be but a blip on the budgetary radar while ignoring the BIG fish: private contract workforce. She rails on privatization taking taxpayer dollars to do public works. When done by governement employees, there's no profit margin to account for. When outsourced, however ... ... well, you needn't worry as much about "Big Brother" when "big business" doesn't even let you vote for their leadership.
We talk to cyber security contractor Gary about the damage that Elon and the Muskrats are doing to the government and our lives. Greg Bluestein's reporting thatDemocrats are "fracturing" over Trump's "hardline" immigration agenda (literally the headline) included a nugget that - to me -wasthe story."...a poll published this month by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution showed that roughly 60% believe there should be a way for most people who have come to the U.S. unlawfully to “stay in the country legally if certain requirements are met.”As DonaldTrump's polling begins to take the predictable slide,Democrats seem to not realize that they still win on issues, but they definitely lose on messaging and branding.Hell they could call on the ghost of GOP past: Ronald Reagan (who'd be branded a fire-breathing liberal by today's MAGA standards - gave amnesty to three million undocumented immigrants in 1986. Did Joe Biden even utter the "a" word? Nope. Should he have? Mmmmmaybe? I mean, if 57% of reddish-state Georgians feel there should be a way for the undocumented to "stay here" but "with conditions," you have to believe that number is at least that high if not higher, nationally.Get this:House Democrats are "pissed"that grassroots ogranizations like Indivisible and MoveOn are applying heat on them to "do something." I get it; what can a party almost completely out of power in Washington actually do, right? Still, bellyaching about grassroots activists being active at this point seems tone deaf.Brian Tyler Cohenwent off on Elon Musk's self-serving via DOGE trying to root out "waste & fraud" while actually dismantling USAID, whose inspector general was investigating SpaceX and its Starlink terminals used in the Ukraine War front. Mere coincidence, surely.Cohen also notes that a neutered USAID gives China room to step up globally and fill the 'humanitarian goodwill' void. You know, "soft power."How's that benefit Elon? Tesla just opened a 'megapack' battery plantalongside its vehicle manufacturing faciity in Shanghai. You connect the dots. There's also the dismantling of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau - which actuallynets a positive return on investment (ROI) for taxpayers. Not exactly 'waste, fraud and abuse." Instead, from Elon and his 'Muskrats' boyband, we get noise about condoms in ̶G̶a̶z̶a̶ Mozambique - which is traced back toGeorge W. Bush's PEPFAR program to eradicate HIV from the third world. Losing goodwill ground in the same Mozambique where ISIS has a presence seems ... shortsighted.
Send us a textI want to be like Mike. I don't want to be like Buster Sales. I also don't want to include any of these love songs on my playlists.Episode 182 celebrates Valentine's Day in a roundabout way.It begins with a birthday celebration of the greatest basketball player ever, and pop culture icon, Michael Jordan. A dominant champion who changed the game of basketball. A hugely influential athlete in terms of his endorsement prowess. MJ was one of the world's most well-known faces in the 1980s and 1990s. We'll do a deep dive into his impact. We used to make it a Blockbuster night all throughout the 1990s. It was not due to this wacky employee training video. This week we go back in the day to look, laugh, and cringe, at a weird Blockbuster Video training tape from 1990. It is led by perhaps the most obnoxious character ever, Buster Sales. The Top 5 will share some of the worst love songs ever. These are probably not the ones you want on your Spotify playlist if you want a romantic evening. »

This week Kevin and Josh are joined by Josh's brother Kyle and guest Bryan Watson of Trapline Beard Oil LLC. Kyle has recently gotten into trapping and as a person being new to it, he had a few questions, so we had a Q&A session! Bryan is originally from Michigan but now resides in North Dakota where he traps, hunts and runs Trapline Beard Oil LLC. We discuss many topics of trapping with Kyle to try and give him some advice based off our experiences including water trapping of Muskrats, Beaver (Bryan has more experience here) and land trapping (Both Kevin and Bryan have experience here). We discuss baits and lures, different types of "sets" and specifics of how we set them, Public land vs Private land trapping and the challenges of each, Incidental catches, using the wind in trapping and scent control including you, your equipment and tools, time and learning the patience to let a trap work, checking traps and the differences legally between SD and Michigan. Different uses of the trapped animals, including, you guessed it, eating them (Beaver and Muskrat specifically), dispatch methods of your catch and more. Take a listen if you have an interest in trapping. As always, THANK YOU for listening. Elon Musk has invaded Washington. He has set loose a pack of feral teenage code monkeys with a god complex inside every federal agency, promising to do for Washington what he did for Twitter. What could possibly go wrong? Oh, and Musk also has a plan to “rightsize” the government by waving unenforceable contracts at federal employees to induce them into resigning. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Aquidneck Island is home to the International Yacht Restoration School of Technology and Trades? Currently, four accredited programs are offered including Digital Modeling & Fabrication, Composites Technology, Boatbuilding & Restoration, and Marine Systems. Now, for our feature story: A University of Rhode Island graduate student will be scouring lakes, ponds and wetlands throughout Rhode Island over the next three years to search for signs of three semi-aquatic mammals to document their distribution in the state. Traveling via kayak, John Crockett will search for evidence of muskrats, beavers and river otters in waterways of southwestern Rhode Island this winter before expanding his search to other areas of the state in the coming years. Crockett, a native of Fort Collins, CO is collaborating with URI Assistant Professor Brian Gerber. “The main goal of the study is to get a good sense of the distribution of each species across the state. To do that, we're conducting an occupancy analysis, which means we're going out looking for signs of tracks, scat, chewed sticks, lodges and sightings of the animals.” All three species have been the target of trappers in Rhode Island for many years — though the state legislature banned the trapping of river otters in the 1970s — and most of what state wildlife officials know about the animals is derived from trapping data. But since trapping has been decreasing in popularity in recent years, less and less data about the animals is being collected. Gerber said: “We want to make sure we have a good assessment of where these mammals are found. It's been 10 or 15 years since anyone has spent much time looking for them, and we want to see if we find any changes in their distribution since those earlier surveys.” According to Crockett, Muskrats are in decline across much of their range in the United States, and now they are difficult to find. The decrease in trapping activity has made it difficult to tell whether the animals are in decline in Rhode Island or if the lack of trapping just makes it appear that way. “Ever since the '70s, we've been mostly in the dark about where these animals live and how many there might be,” Crockett expects to conduct his surveys from December through March for the next three years, as well as periodic summer surveys. He eventually hopes to be able to estimate the probability that any of the three species will be found in a given habitat. The URI scientists are working closely on the project with wildlife biologists at the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management so the data can be used to help prioritize habitat for protection and inform management decisions on trapping limits. How many years ago does this story happen?故事发生在多少年前?Who did live among the trees?还有谁住在树林里呢?节选原文:Little House in the Big Woods - by Laura Ingalls Wilder(Word Count: 275) Once upon a time, sixty years ago, a little girl lived in the Big Woods of Wisconsin, in a little gray house made of logs. The great, dark trees of the Big Woods stood all around the house, and beyond them were other trees and beyond them were more trees. As far as a man could go to the north in a day, or a week, or a whole month, there was nothing but woods. There were no houses. There were no roads. There were no people. There were only trees and wild animals who had their homes among them.Wolves lived in the Big Woods, and bears and huge wild cats. Muskrats and mink and otter lived by the streams. Foxes had dens in the hills and deer roamed everywhere. To the east of the little log house, and to the west, there were miles upon miles of trees, and only a few little log houses scattered far apart in the edge of the Big Woods. So far as the little girl could see, there was only the one little house where she lived with her father and mother, her sister Mary and baby sister Carrie. A wagon track ran before the house, turning and twisting out of sight in the woods where the wild animals lived, but the little girl did not know where it went, nor what might be at the end of it.The little girl was named Laura and she called her father, Pa, and her mother, Ma. In those days and in that place, children did not say Father and Mother, nor Mamma and Papa, as they do now.
