They explore the idea of using VR technology to create a more immersive drawing experience, the enduring appeal of 2D comics, and the importance of building an audience through platforms like mailing lists and social media. Kevin discusses the various social media platforms he uses to share his comics, including Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Mastodon, Twitter, and Imgur. He explains that Imgur is like a nicer version of Reddit and that he uses it to drive traffic to his website. David is intrigued by Imgur and asks Kevin for a pitch on why he should be posting there. Kevin explains that Imgur started as an image hosting service for Reddit and has a social media aspect to it. They also discuss their motivations for posting on social media and the validation they seek from likes and engagement. They explore the idea of creating books and the number of comics needed for a book. They also discuss the possibility of changing their approach to comics if compensation wasn't a factor. They end the conversation by addressing a question from a listener who creates gardening advice cartoons and wonders if she should reduce the number of panels to cater to social media attention spans. In this final part of the conversation, David and Kevin discuss the different types of content that perform well on social media, including informative, emotional, and aspirational content. They also provide advice on interviewing other creators, emphasizing the importance of research and making the interviewee feel comfortable. (0:00:43) Al: Before we get going, just a reminder that transcripts for this podcast are available in the show notes and on the website. Today, we, me and Johnny, are going to talk about Turnip Boy robs a bank, because apparently I didn’t write it in the show notes. (0:01:00) Al: We’re going to talk about Turnip Boy robs a bank, the sequel to Turnip Boy commits tax evasion, (0:01:09) Al: and we’re not going to talk about it now, we’re going to talk about it later. (0:01:15) Al: Before that, just because we could easily fall into a discussion about it right now if we’re not careful. (0:01:20) Jonnie: Yeah, I was already head like in the line of things. (0:01:22) Jonnie: I was like, oh, I should not say this right now. (0:01:26) Al: But before that, we’ve got a bunch of news. (0:01:30) Al: But first of all, Johnny, what have you been up to? (0:01:34) Jonnie: What have I been up to? There is a game called Skull and Bones and apparently it has been in development since 2013 and it is apparently about to come out, but this weekend it is doing a public demo I guess is what it is where anyone can try the game for free, it will be over by the time you’re listening to this, although the game will be like a day or two from coming out. (0:02:02) Jonnie: And look I’m a bit of a slut for pirates like I love pirate games even though they’re just like (0:02:09) Jonnie: Piracy is so hard to do well in games (0:02:14) Jonnie: And I think in many respects Skull and Bones is kind of a (0:02:17) Jonnie: Testament to that like there are things that I really like about the game (0:02:21) Jonnie: But it’s gonna be a pretty hard game to recommend like people (0:02:26) Jonnie: Spend I think it’s assume is gonna be like a $70 game and I’d be very hard to recommend that anyone spend (0:02:33) Jonnie: dollars on a game. (0:02:34) Jonnie: Like this, unless you are super super into pirates. (0:02:37) Al: I’m not, so. I mean, pirates are fine, but I’ve never been like, “Oh yeah, I love pirates.” (0:02:43) Al: I’ve enjoyed some pirate-based media, but there’s a difference between, “Oh yeah, I like that,” (0:02:49) Al: and like, “Oh no, I must consume the pirate-based media.” You know, there’s a big difference there. (0:02:56) Jonnie: Honestly, I think the biggest problem with pirate-based stuff is ship-to-ship combat is really hard to do and to make fun and engaging. (0:03:06) Al: Yeah. (0:03:06) Jonnie: And everyone probably has a slightly different view on what it should be. (0:03:12) Al: Hmm. (0:03:12) Jonnie: And, you know, do they want it to be really fun? (0:03:12) Al: The fun bit, I think, there is key. (0:03:16) Al: It’s probably, you can probably make up a pretty accurate one, but it’s not going to be fun. (0:03:20) Jonnie: Correct, yeah. In many respects I think Skull & Bones has gone down how do we try and make it fun? (0:03:28) Jonnie: And I’m sure a lot of people will find the version fun. For me it’s a little bit too like, (0:03:32) Jonnie: you and your pirate ship mow down hundreds of other pirate ships which feels like… (0:03:39) Jonnie: That’s not what I guess I want from a pirate ship experience. I want to engage in one ship in a sort of long drawn out battle rather than mow down a hundred ships. (0:03:48) Al: Yeah, and I guess the difficulty is like, what are you focusing on? Because when you’ve got a ship, do you focus on the traversal? Do you focus on the combat? Do you try and do both and do both of them badly? There’s a lot to think of there. (0:04:10) Jonnie: Yeah, and I guess for me, the Skull and Bones, you have a character, but realistically in this one, (0:04:16) Jonnie: your character is the ship, right? You are controlling the ship, and that is the majority of the gameplay. And I think that’s one of the things that I’m learning about what I like in games over the sort of past few months is a strong narrative element, and in many respects, (0:04:32) Jonnie: I think that means I need a character that I feel tied to. Because I think my take on Skull and and bones is like I will have fun with it. (0:04:40) Jonnie: But I after this demo will likely have got what I needed to get out of it, which I had the same experience with (0:04:46) Jonnie: PowerWorld It’s like I experienced the thing and it was cool, but without that strong (0:04:53) Jonnie: narrative driven element or hook that I could find I bounce off it pretty quickly (0:04:58) Al: Yeah, yeah, that’s fair. (0:05:01) Jonnie: Yeah, but that’s what I’ve been playing. Al, what have you been up to? (0:05:04) Al: I was racking my brain because I’m like, (0:05:05) Al: have I played anything other than Turnip Boy? (0:05:07) Al: And I don’t think I have. (0:05:10) Al: This week has been quite, (0:05:11) Al: ‘cause I’m going to America next week. (0:05:13) Al: Like, as you listen to this, (0:05:14) Al: I will probably be on my way to America unless you’re listening to it straight away as it comes out. (0:05:20) Al: So yeah, I’ve not really been playing that much. (0:05:24) Jonnie: Are you feeling ready for your America trip? (0:05:26) Al: Are we ever, are we ever truly ready? (0:05:28) Jonnie: Well, if anyone is gonna like be a person that is ready for a trip, it’s probably gonna be (0:05:28) Al: Well, ‘cause the problem is that somebody who like, (0:05:36) Al: am I ready? Probably. (0:05:37) Al: But does that mean I feel ready? (0:05:39) Al: Like, those are two different things. (0:05:40) Al: And like, have I done enough to mean that logically, (0:05:43) Al: I know I will be fine? Yes. (0:05:45) Al: Does that mean that I, in my heart, (0:05:49) Al: feel that I’m going to be fine? (0:05:50) Al: No, of course not. (0:05:52) Al: I am convinced that I’m going to die in a fiery plane crash, right? (0:05:55) Al: So it’s just (0:05:58) Al: I think that the people who feel ready for the trip aren’t ready. (0:06:04) Jonnie: That’s fair, that’s fair. (0:06:05) Jonnie: And you’re going to America to play Pokemon Go, right? (0:06:08) Al: I am going to America to meet with friends, and I will also be playing Pokemon Go when I’m there. (0:06:15) Al: Yeah, my next recording I will be back having been to America, and that will be interesting. (0:06:22) Al: My first transatlantic flight, my first flight longer than two and a half hours, so we’ll see. (0:06:29) Al: Yeah, I honestly don’t think I’ve played anything else. (0:06:30) Al: I played some Just Dance, I guess. (0:06:32) Al: I’ve been doing that. (0:06:32) Jonnie: At home, or are you going to arcades and playing like just dance in an arcade? What are you? (0:06:35) Al: Thank you. (0:06:38) Al: Do they do have Just Dance in arcades? (0:06:41) Jonnie: I’m sure they do right? It’s gotta be. Oh, maybe I think of DDR (0:06:46) Al: Yeah, they had, obviously they had dance mats, but like I don’t think they have just dance in an arcade. (0:06:52) Al: Uh, cool. (0:06:53) Al: Should we talk about some news? (0:06:54) Jonnie: Let’s do it. (0:06:57) Al: Before I fall asleep. (0:06:58) Al: So our first piece of news is Botany Manor. (0:07:01) Al: They have announced that their release date is the 9th of April. (0:07:06) Al: So I don’t think this was out in early access at all. (0:07:08) Al: So this will be its like proper first release date, but it is a, a non-early access release. (0:07:15) Al: Rare. (0:07:16) Al: Rare these days. (0:07:19) Jonnie: It’s kind of novel, which I like. (0:07:22) Al: Ironically, you stick out now by not doing early access, (0:07:26) Al: whereas previously you would stick out by doing early access. (0:07:30) Al: No interest in this game, Johnny? (0:07:32) Jonnie: Not really. It’s hard, right? Because I want to be excited about all Cottagecore games. Because, (0:07:40) Jonnie: you know, you and I remember the time when it was Stardew, and Harvest Moon, and Rune Factory, (0:07:47) Jonnie: and that was it. And so we would be excited about anything new. And now we are in the opposite time, (0:07:54) Jonnie: where there is such an abundance of games that there has to be, I guess there’s specific things (0:08:02) Jonnie: and often I don’t know that I’m looking for it until I see it. And, you know, for me, Botany Manor, (0:08:10) Jonnie: yeah, this is not it. Botany Manor, kind of, just the visual style is not there for me. And it just, (0:08:20) Jonnie: I don’t know, it kind of falls into the natural. I’m trying to not be overly negative about a game I have not played. It’s just not kind of rising through everything else to be like, (0:08:32) Jonnie: that I feel like I’m putting on my list of games I need to do. (0:08:36) Al: I think it’s interesting because you mentioned the the art style. It’s very simple graphics except the plants which I get what they’re doing there because like the focus is the plants but it also feels a little bit weird that the plants are so detailed when everything else is quite simple textures. (0:08:54) Jonnie: Yeah, I think what you just said kind of triggered the thought for me that it feels almost like a game that a student would submit for an assignment sort of thing. (0:09:06) Jonnie: I’m sure there’s way more work that’s gone into this, and building games is very hard, but it’s kind of missing some of that polish that makes it look and feel like a finished product, which in theory it is. (0:09:23) Al: Yeah, I can see how somebody would like this, but yeah, I’m not, I don’t care about the detail of plants quite, I think, so that’s where it falls down for me. It’s like, it’s really focused on the plants, which would be good if you really care about the plants, (0:09:37) Al: but I don’t. Next, we have Moonstone Island, have a content update and a DLC. Let’s talk about the DLC first, because the DLC is very small. All of Moonstone Island’s DLCs are basically cosmetics, so it’s the Valentine’s DLC. (0:09:53) Al: You can get a heart rug, a heart house skin for your, a heart house skin for your house, (0:09:58) Al: that’s a very bad sentence, a heart box of chocolates, a heart archway brackets or heart way, and a heart lamp as well as a love seat. And that is three dollars ninety nine with a twenty percent launch discount. I will not be buying that DLC because I don’t care (0:10:23) Al: about those cosmetics. Yeah, they fit on really nicely with the game in general, and they are hearts, and they are detailed hearts. The heart house is not just a heart shaped house, it’s a heart shaped house with a heart shaped windows and a heart shaped hole on the, not the heart shaped door, that would be silly, and a bow on it as well with a little yellow heart as well. (0:10:25) Jonnie: But if you do care about that style of cosmetic, they are good-looking versions of those. (0:10:53) Al: It’s very heart-shaped, it is what it says on the tin. (0:10:59) Al: But it’s also coming along with the content update, the Valentine’s update, which is, (0:11:05) Al: you may well have guessed, it’s bringing marriage to the game. (0:11:13) Al: So it’s not bringing relationships, relationships already exist in the game, but they were quite limited in what you could do with them. (0:11:20) Al: There was no marriage in that. (0:11:23) Al: Even marriage, the marriage in this game, seems interesting. (0:11:33) Al: There was a thing, I need to double check in the trailer, because there was a thing that seemed like, so they move into your house, and then there was something about somebody sleeping on a couch, but I can’t remember what it was. (0:11:48) Jonnie: seeing this. (0:11:48) Al: Yeah, we’re missing a bunch of the details until it comes. (0:11:53) Al: I don’t think I can see myself spending much time (0:12:05) Jonnie: Yeah, that seems fair that it like it’s so one of my things is this game already has so much going on (0:12:12) Jonnie: Being that you know cosy creature collection, you know (0:12:18) Jonnie: just it feels like (0:12:20) Jonnie: marriage is just another another thing in a game that already has a lot of things (0:12:27) Al: The good the good thing is also comes with other things. So there’s five new spirits, (0:12:31) Al: including one that looks like a toaster with some bread in it and one that’s a robot dog (0:12:37) Al: and one that is a weird fish snake and I have a toxic thing. I don’t know what that is and a kiwi. (0:12:46) Jonnie: Yeah, we all love Kiwis (0:12:49) Al: There’s also a new taming system, but I have not seen any details about that. (0:12:56) Al: So… (0:12:57) Al: I don’t know what to think about that. (0:13:00) Al: And some more stuff, which is probably too detailed. (0:13:02) Jonnie: The Kiwi looks very stressed. (0:13:04) Al: This Kiwi does look very stressed, which is fair enough. Kiwi watch so it’s electric and… (0:13:16) Al: I feel like that’s an extra syllable than it should have been “key what”. (0:13:21) Jonnie: But yeah, that sounds much better. (0:13:21) Al: Hi, I’m Eamon Store Island, I have opinions on your names. (0:13:28) Jonnie: The toaster one’s very cute as well. (0:13:32) Al: Iconii Island have a new update as well, which is out now, the Lunar Union Festival update. (0:13:38) Al: It’s adding a new festival to the game. (0:13:42) Al: We probably don’t need to go into too much details, we’ve not even covered the game on the podcast yet. (0:13:45) Al: So. (0:13:46) Al: Yet that makes it sound like I’m going to. I don’t know whether we will or not. (0:13:49) Al: “Come celebrate the Lunar Union Festival, whether it’s and collect exclusive items. (0:13:53) Al: A lunar spirit will appear in the Hamlet. During the Lunar Union event, it will give a quest that will reward you with ribbits and beautiful rewards.” Reading these things when you’ve not played a game (0:14:04) Jonnie: Yeah. And I don’t really recall much about a Coney Island, like from covering previous stuff on the podcast, but it looks like a cool game. (0:14:14) Jonnie: And I guess more generally, like I’m pretty anti a lot of festivals in games because I think they’re kind of just boring and played out. (0:14:21) Jonnie: But one thing that I really like from like the last sort of, I don’t know, five to ten years is I feel like games have done a good job of amplifying festivals from other cultures. (0:14:30) Jonnie: and that’s been really cool to see and I think that like so these are the (0:14:34) Jonnie: sorts of festivals that I like because they often have much wider interpretations of what they are as opposed to like a Christmas Winter Festival which is kind of just like we’re gonna do something with snow and and presents and that’s that’s it so this looks cool and I’m excited and and happy year of the dragon (0:14:57) Al: Yes, slime Rancher 2 also have a new update out now and this is the gadgets my way update it includes a new gadget system (0:15:07) Al: So if you if you’ve played the game and you know how the gadgets used to work, it’s changed (0:15:13) Jonnie: So, I feel like every time you and I are on a show, there’s some sort of Slime Rancher update, and neither of us care about Slime Rancher, and I really, like, I thought this time, like, I’m really gonna try and care, and I was just like, mmm, like, Slime Rancher people, god bless, you do you, I’m sure you love it, or hate it, or whatever, it’s coming. (0:15:13) Al: There you go I I I I just… (0:15:34) Al: I feel like I need to play the game sometime but not yet maybe when maybe when Slime Rancher 2 is out of early access (0:15:44) Jonnie: Yeah. (0:15:48) Al: potion pyramid is coming to iOS and Android oh no it’s out now it is now on it’s not coming to it has come to it came (0:15:52) Jonnie: This… (0:15:56) Jonnie: Yes. (0:15:58) Jonnie: It did. (0:16:00) Jonnie: And I… (0:16:02) Jonnie: I’m curious. (0:16:04) Jonnie: No, I’m curious, right? (0:16:04) Al: still don’t care oh interesting (0:16:06) Jonnie: I like the idea of what Potion Permit was trying to do. (0:16:10) Jonnie: I was going back through, trying to find the… (0:16:12) Jonnie: I need to go back and find the episode that was done on Potion Permit. (0:16:16) Jonnie: I have the same reservation, you know, (0:16:18) Jonnie: like I think I did. (0:16:20) Jonnie: I have the same reservation, you know, like I– (0:16:22) Jonnie: I had full-star true Valley going on mobile, like how easy is it to play? (0:16:26) Jonnie: But this game has the right visual style for a mobile game, so I am curious. (0:16:35) Jonnie: I’m kind of in a phase where I don’t really mobile game much outside of Marvel Snap, so I don’t know that I’ll stick with it, but I’m at least curious. (0:16:40) Al: It is five dollars translate into five US dollars translate into your local currency. (0:16:51) Jonnie: I feel like that’s a good price point for a, you know, a sizable mobile game. (0:16:54) Al: It’s surprisingly yeah it’s pretty cheap. I’m surprised it’s that cheap because if it’s the full game ported to mobile that’s that seems suspiciously good. (0:17:10) Al: Too many tabs. Wildflowers. Two exciting things. One of which you can actually do anything with. (0:17:21) Al: The other one you probably can’t. So there’s a… they’ve even released what the plushie is. (0:17:28) Al: So it’s a beans plushie. That’s the flying pig. Both Kevin and Cody predicted that. They were both correct. (0:17:35) Al: It is up on make ship just now and it is almost finished. (0:17:40) Al: 50% funded with 16 days to go. So go do that if you want it. (0:17:54) Jonnie: Nah, I feel like if I’m buying a plush, I’m getting a Junimo plush. (0:17:59) Jonnie: Yeah. (0:18:02) Jonnie: And also everything about wildflowers just creeps me out. (0:18:05) Jonnie: I talked about this last week, but I don’t like their visual style at all. It’s so creepy. (0:18:06) Al: Well, I tell you what, we’ll definitely not make you like it more, which is the Apple Vision Pro version of the game. (0:18:19) Al: So this isn’t just the game in a screen. (0:18:24) Al: It is, but it isn’t. (0:18:26) Al: In so much as when you first look at it, it looks like it’s just the game with a weird border around it. (0:18:32) Al: menus and farming and other things like that pop. (0:18:36) Al: So when you’re in a menu, it will pop out to like one of the sides of the screen as a separate window. (0:18:46) Al: So it doesn’t like cover up your gameplay, which is an interesting way of doing things. (0:18:51) Al: And the farming pops up like in front of it, like down below, like an actual 3D farming plot that you can just like go on and grab things and move them and like. (0:19:04) Al: It’s really in, I think… (0:19:06) Al: I really like what they’re doing here. (0:19:09) Al: I think this is an interesting way of… (0:19:12) Al: They’re not just going, “Oh, let’s just put the game on,” right? (0:19:16) Al: They’re actually going, “What can we actually do with the new features of this that makes this different?” (0:19:21) Al: And I really like that. (0:19:23) Al: But… (0:19:25) Al: I suspect Apple gave them a lot of money to do this because there’s… (0:19:31) Al: Is anybody going to buy this and play this? (0:19:33) Al: because you have to have the headset (0:19:36) Al: which you can only buy in the U.S. just now and costs three and a half grand and you have to like the game and be willing to put in the time and effort. (0:19:47) Jonnie: Yeah, I agree. But I think it’s super cool that it’s happening, right? And for me, it’s one of those like, wow, prodigical games are really sort of like in the mainstream, given that this is, (0:20:00) Jonnie: you know, one of the first games realistically to sort of cross into that boundary. And I think some of the things that it looks like they’re doing in the that Apple Vision Pro space, they they make sense and they show the potential for what could be once a day. (0:20:17) Jonnie: We get out of the weird expensive prototype phase of this tech. (0:20:22) Al: Yeah, yeah, I mean this is this is I if I had an Apple Vision Pro I would be I would be playing this game on that right like I would absolutely be doing it to see (0:20:32) Al: At least to see what it’s like and if if not more than that like if I enjoy it doing more than that (0:20:38) Al: But yeah, like I can’t for two reasons (0:20:45) Al: Because of where I live and because of how expensive it is (0:20:50) Al: So yeah, it’s (0:20:53) Al: Yeah, I like what they’re doing. I like that they’re pushing different ideas. I think this is a good example of how (0:21:02) Al: VR gaming doesn’t have to be first person right first of all like I don’t I (0:21:09) Al: Don’t I don’t like most VR gaming because I don’t want to be (0:21:15) Al: First person I don’t want to do that. I don’t like that. I always feel claustrophobic going (0:21:20) Jonnie: Yeah, I get motion sick, so I just can’t do VR at all, and so this sort of gaming is like, (0:21:29) Jonnie: ah, so this is how I could game in an AR-style environment that would work, and it makes sense. (0:21:37) Jonnie: And I think the other important thing is this is a less of a step for game development to take than (0:21:45) Jonnie: into fully realized VR. I think it’s… well, I think… (0:21:51) Jonnie: In general, people underestimate how difficult game development is, and I imagine VR game development is another step on top of that, whereas this feels like a more reasonable step to take. (0:22:02) Al: for sure. For sure. Yeah. I think it’s very clever of Apple to have done this, right? (0:22:10) Al: Because wildflowers have their agreement with Apple, like, “Oh, we pay you money. You’re now on Apple Arcade, and they’ve obviously then gone on top of that. We’ll pay you more money. You will do this.” And I’m guessing they worked together because, like, I think got to have these ideas and… (0:22:32) Al: And then do them. (0:22:34) Al: And I think these ideas are really interesting. (0:22:38) Al: And I’d like that both Apple and Wildflowers were willing to do this and put in the effort and the time, even though this is not going to make its money back at all. (0:22:49) Jonnie: Yeah. One of the things I started thinking about, like looking at how this implementation went, (0:22:54) Jonnie: was games like Palia, and you know, where time continues moving in Palia, even when you are menuing, because it’s a MMO game, right? And the ability in this sort of environment to menu while still being able to fully see the world that, you know, or the screen or however you want it, you you know, that your character is in. (0:23:19) Jonnie: To me it makes a ton of sense, like you can, you’ve got that more seamless transition rather than looking at something different so (0:23:27) Jonnie: I don’t know, like just some cool, like it’s just cool to see this level of innovation and for it to be happening in the cottage core space (0:23:37) Al: I also think the farming is a really interesting thing because in my opinion, most of the things I don’t like in farming games is the farming. And that’s not because the farming isn’t fun, (0:23:48) Al: it’s because of the way that you interact with it. It’s like, oh, you walk a step, you press a button, you walk a step, you press a button. And that’s why I like to automate it as quickly as possible because I don’t enjoy that part of the gameplay. But being able to go like, oh, I am in this environment, here is my plots, and I can just go with my water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water water (0:24:07) Al: or what like it’s that feels much more enjoyable to me because you’re like actively doing the thing rather than like push that button push that button push that you know it feels much more fun to me. (0:24:23) Al: Uh an equally big update is Disney Dreamlight Valley. Update number nine is coming soon (0:24:33) Al: And in that, you’ll be able to change your name. (0:24:37) Al: So, let me explain why I am personally excited about this. And this is because of a bug in the game. (0:24:38) Jonnie: It has shocked me how excited people have been for changing your name. (0:24:43) Jonnie: Like… (0:24:50) Al: So, if you start Disney Dreamlight Valley in Game Pass. Game Pass streaming, I think, (0:24:58) Al: specifically, you think you have to be doing the X-play or whatever it is, right? They’re streaming (0:25:04) Al: the game so you’re not downloading it and playing it which is how I play the game initially because I had game pass and I was doing it on my steam deck and the only way you can do that is with X cloud that’s what it’s called X cloud. If you if that’s how you start Disney Dreamlight Valley you cannot set your name it’s a bug in the game I presume it’s fixed by this point but when I started it wasn’t so your your player is called player. So the entire time that I’ve been playing Disney Dreamlight Valley across multiple different platforms now for What is it, a year and a half? (0:25:35) Al: Is it a year and a half? (0:25:37) Al: I don’t care about changing names, once I’ve set my name, I’m fine. (0:25:52) Jonnie: I feel like I didn’t know about that bug, and I don’t think it impacted me, so now this makes way more sense. (0:26:02) Al: But I never set my name, that’s the problem. (0:26:04) Al: I was called player. (0:26:07) Al: Anyway, I’m excited to have my name in the game. (0:26:16) Al: And our final piece of news is for the fantastically named Garden Life, a Cozy Simulator, which we have talked about before. (0:26:24) Al: I don’t really want to get into it too much, but they’ve released a trailer for their story. (0:26:29) Al: Johnny, do you want to complain about the name? (0:26:32) Al: You can complain about the name if you want. (0:26:33) Jonnie: No, I complained about the name on a previous episode, yeah. (0:26:37) Al: Right, fair enough. (0:26:37) Jonnie: Yeah, I did watch the trailer, and there’s some cool stuff. (0:26:46) Jonnie: Or like, so the trailer talks about the fact that it’s a community garden, (0:26:50) Jonnie: and the person that used to look after it passed away early. (0:26:54) Jonnie: Idea of community garden looked after by one person, you know, kind of doesn’t make sense. (0:26:58) Al: Well, you say it doesn’t make sense, I think that’s very likely what happens most of the time. (0:26:59) Jonnie: But you are the… yeah. (0:27:01) Jonnie: Yeah. (0:27:06) Jonnie: I mean, you’re probably right. (0:27:08) Jonnie: And you’re the new person to look after it. (0:27:11) Jonnie: I just, again, coming back to sort of the visual style, (0:27:14) Jonnie: I don’t like it. (0:27:16) Jonnie: This feels like a– (0:27:18) Jonnie: We talked before about VR games. (0:27:19) Jonnie: This game looks like a VR game to me, and… (0:27:22) Jonnie: Yeah. (0:27:22) Al: It does, doesn’t it? It does. It’s the first person. I don’t want to play first-person games. Like, I just, I don’t find it fun. (0:27:30) Jonnie: It makes sense in certain genres and certain gameplay styles, and I do not think this is one. (0:27:38) Al: But this is this is why I don’t play those games because I just don’t I just feel claustrophobic when I’m when I’m it’s a weird feeling but I want to be and normally most games I want to be my camera to be further away than it actually is I will always put the camera out to the furthest point because I want to be able to see as much as possible. (0:28:00) Al: So I was very happy when Pokemon Scarlet and Violet added the third camera zoom option that was great I loved that. (0:28:08) Al: I agree I don’t think I mean the the name aside which is just stupid on multiple levels I yeah it doesn’t look like a game I would want to play it feels like it feels a lot like Botany Manor talking about them so close together they feel like the same game it’s almost like two people had the same idea and instead of working together they both did their own take on it. (0:28:23) Jonnie: It does, yes. (0:28:34) Jonnie: Yeah, I think that’s uh, I think that’s very fair. (0:28:38) Al: And both coming out within two months of each other no I don’t think so not this close (0:28:44) Jonnie: Yeah, that’s like, that’s ages apart now, in, in… (0:28:48) Jonnie: Well, there’s still a chance one of them gets delayed, right? (0:28:52) Jonnie: No? (0:28:56) Jonnie: Right, well, I don’t think we’ll be covering either of these games, so we’ll see. (0:29:02) Al: Unless somebody suddenly gets really excited about them, we’ll see. (0:29:06) Jonnie: Well, if it does happen, I bet that my money’s on Kev, that it hits. (0:29:13) Al: I was gonna say Cody. (0:29:14) Jonnie: » Oh, yeah, that’s fair. (0:29:16) Jonnie: So Kevin Cody covering “Garden Life,” “Acoustic Simulator,” (0:29:19) Jonnie: and– [LAUGHS] (0:29:20) Al: They need to play both of them and compare them on the same podcast. So that’s the news. (0:29:25) Jonnie: Oh, yes, yes, there we go. (0:29:30) Jonnie: » Whoo. (0:29:32) Al: I can’t even remember when the wooing started. Why do we woo so much? I’m not a woo person. (0:29:37) Jonnie: » Because it gets over the awkwardness of not knowing how to do good transitions. (0:29:43) Al: Thank you. We’re going to talk about Turnip Boy Rob’s a bank. So just before. (0:29:50) Al: Before we get into it, I want to start out with a couple of things. So first of all, (0:29:55) Al: this is a sequel to Turnip Boy commits tax evasion officially. The first game was not cottage core. We covered it because you grow a plant at the beginning and then there’s no more farming and it is definitely not cottage core. But that’s why we covered it. Whatever. (0:30:17) Al: We can get past that. (0:30:18) Al: This game is even less. (0:30:20) Al: Less Cottagecore, and so I’m just going to put that out there. (0:30:24) Al: If you don’t want to listen to a game that is not Cottagecore at all, then feel free. (0:30:30) Al: We’re covering this because it’s a sequel to a game that both me and Johnny liked, and we were both going to play it anyway because we wanted to, and we’re covering it. (0:30:45) Al: So it turns out this game’s a rogue light. (0:30:50) Al: Johnny, I’m not crazy, right? (0:30:54) Al: That seemed to come out of left field, right? (0:30:56) Jonnie: it definitely did. So here’s the thing. You and I both really like Turnip Boy Commits Tax evasion. (0:31:06) Jonnie: Very clearly the weakest part of that game was the combat. (0:31:06) Al: Loved it. Fantastic game. (0:31:14) Jonnie: And in many respects they took the worst part of their game and said “Let’s make that the game.” (0:31:23) Al: Yes. Yeah, I think… Yes, you are correct. That is what they did. So listeners wonder why I do not generally like roguelites. (0:31:24) Jonnie: Which was a choice. (0:31:44) Al: Um, Johnny, I liked this game. So I was… (0:31:48) Jonnie: Ow! (0:31:53) Al: fully, fully expecting, right? I didn’t play this game until like two days ago, and I was fully expecting not to like it, right? I was like, I’m going to just play this for like two hours, and I’m going to hate it, and I’m going to be really disappointed, and I’m going to put it away. And I was mostly like that until I defeated the first boss. And then I realized that this game does things to solve the problems that I have with roguelites. (0:32:23) Al: And the reason why roguelites is that even though you like build up resources and you build up more skills and blah, blah, blah, every time you run through, it’s a clean slate, (0:32:33) Al: and you have to start from the beginning. In this game, once you defeat one of the bosses, (0:32:40) Al: they’re defeated. You don’t have to defeat them again, technically until the end. I’ll get to that. (0:32:48) Al: And that one thing for me made me like this game. (0:32:53) Al: If you had to defeat every boss in every run, I would have absolutely hated it, (0:32:59) Al: and I never would have got close to finishing it. I have been very close to finishing this game. (0:33:06) Al: I’ve been like one mistake away from finishing it six times now. The same mistake. It’s really frustrating. The last bit really frustrating. Basically, when you get to a point where you’ve you’ve defeated all the bosses and then you have to do one run where you defeat (0:33:23) Al: four bosses in one go. That wasn’t too hard. What was hard then is there’s like a special fifth thing at the end where like you’re having to run around doing certain things while being chased by another boss and that boss is so powerful that he can like kill you in like two hits. So that’s the frustrating thing. But I agree that the combat is not great in this game, but there’s still something about it that I’m finding very (0:33:53) Al: fun and I finding it difficult to explain. (0:33:58) Jonnie: you’re probably finding it difficult because I feel like you’re just on some crazy tools. (0:34:05) Jonnie: To be fair, I think your point about not having to beat the bosses again is a good one. I was kind of surprised, but it makes sense given the boss fights are significantly bigger than (0:34:23) Jonnie: the other aspects of the game, and ambiguous kind of the wrong word, but on a run in this game. (0:34:28) Jonnie: You’ve got a timer, and that time is only a couple of minutes. When you’re in a boss fight, (0:34:33) Jonnie: that timer pauses, but that boss fight itself takes like a couple of minutes to get through. (0:34:39) Jonnie: They are not fast fights relative to the length of your run, and not having to do those every single run I think was a really good choice, because that became one of the blockers for me with Hades. I really like Hades. I’m not very good at roguelite combat. (0:34:58) Jonnie: That being said, the combat in this game is so bad. The movement is terrible, (0:35:24) Jonnie: The range of the weapons is confusing. (0:35:28) Jonnie: Particularly the melee ones, where the range is significantly bigger than they look on the screen. (0:35:34) Jonnie: And so you’re consistently getting hit by these melee weapons when the enemy is not even close to you. (0:35:41) Jonnie: I just struggle to understand how anyone can like the combat in this game. (0:35:45) Jonnie: And that’s all this game is, is just the combat. (0:35:50) Al: So at some point you unlock a chainsaw and that makes every. (0:35:55) Jonnie: Right, I did not get to the chainsaw, so for reference, I beat the first boss, and I fought the second boss once, and I was like, “That cannot be bolted with this game anymore.” (0:36:06) Jonnie: That was as far as I got. (0:36:09) Al: That’s fair. I totally get it. And I totally get why you’re not a huge fan of it. But there’s something about it that just kept me going. I’m so frustrated that I didn’t manage to finish the game because literally like I’ve played, I’ve done that last level three times today and I’ve gotten so close to finishing it each time. And it’s so frustrating. But I know it’s going to be great when I do finish it. I think… (0:36:40) Jonnie: So, how do you feel about the humour in this game? Because obviously the humour was a huge part of Turnip Boy commits tax evasion. (0:36:49) Al: Yeah, I think in some ways, in some places, I think it has made me feel the same way as the first game did, but some of it has felt a little bit flat and I’m not quite sure why. (0:37:07) Al: Like it’s just it’s simple things like I there’s a point where where you come across a specific thing from a previous game, right? And it’s like, it’s one of these things that you tore up. (0:37:20) Al: Which is like, one of the main things in the last game is you’re tearing up random things. (0:37:24) Al: And some things it’s like, oh yeah, because you’re tearing up this tax letter and you’re tearing up this, you’re tearing up that. And there’s some random pointless thing that’s like, why did you tear that up? You know, it’s just stupid, it’s pointless, but it’s funny. And you come across one of the things that you tore up in the previous game, but the funny, it just, it then says, oh, (0:37:42) Al: but it’s laminated. And then the next thing is, they’re learning. It’s just that one comment. (0:37:49) Al: Like is funnier than most games, right? But then a lot of, especially the early game humor feels a little bit weird to me. And I’m not sure why it didn’t hit in the same way. (0:38:02) Jonnie: I have the same feeling, right? Like the game definitely still has those moments where it is (0:38:08) Jonnie: very funny. I think a big part of the reason it doesn’t hit is because it’s now (0:38:14) Jonnie: expected, right? And the construct of Rob’s a bank, right? Like if you’ve played (0:38:22) Jonnie: commits tax evasion, you have a good sense of the developers’ feelings on capitalism in general, (0:38:29) Jonnie: and a lot of it’s expected so so you now you come across (0:38:32) Jonnie: things and you kind of get where a lot of it is is going where I think and part of it is that the first one had that sort of joy of discovery of what’s the next documents that I’m going to find and rip up and some of them are very funny because not that they’re fully unexpected but they go in different directions right which I think is is one of the the bits of charm of that game that’s kind of lost it and I think early on they try and do a job. (0:39:02) Jonnie: They do a lot of callbacks to some of the humor from the first game or to significant bits from the first game but it doesn’t land on it. I think one of the downsides is one of the first characters you come across is the the streamer and they kind of just run back the exposure bucks joke and it’s it’s you know it’s just like yeah it’s fine and like they delve into new things like there’s some jokes about NFTs and all of the fun stuff that’s that’s developed in the (0:39:32) Jonnie: you know con people out of money and they have jokes about it it just is like yeah those are the jokes that I now expect from them and I think this game would have benefited by potentially pushing into a different commentary on society because that’s definitely an element of the game and I just don’t think a lot of them work. (0:39:57) Jonnie: Oh yeah. (0:39:58) Al: That’s fair. I think the humor that… kind of. Right, let me… I’m having lots of thoughts. (0:40:06) Al: So I think that actually there’s two things of the funniest bits in this game. One of them is (0:40:14) Al: some of the callbacks are very funny. Some of them are not, but some of them are very funny. (0:40:19) Al: So I don’t think it’s just like, if you don’t do the callbacks, I think you’re missing something. (0:40:25) Al: I think that’s fun. I think they might- (0:40:28) Al: I don’t lean into it a bit too much. I think there are too many characters in the game that were in the previous one. Almost every single character is in the game again, except the one you kill. That’s not to say there aren’t new characters, there are new characters, (0:40:46) Al: but it seems weird to have- it feels contrived why everybody else is in the game. But I also think that some of the funniest bits. (0:40:50) Jonnie: Mmm. Yes. (0:40:58) Al: So they start out quite simple, right? We’re going to spoil basically everything in this game listeners, right? So jump out now. If you’ve not if you played the first game and you think you might like this, you can get over the roguelite stuff. Stop now, go play it. You can get it done in a day or two. It’s not a very long game. (0:41:07) Jonnie: Uh, only a little bit. (0:41:26) Al: and (0:41:28) Al: depending on how good you are at the combat. So the lifts start out quite simple. It’s like, oh, here’s a part of the bank and you have to go through and you like jump over the lasers and you destroy the laser box and then you go back and you blah, blah, blah. (0:41:43) Al: Right. But as you as you defeat bosses and you progress in the game, they become more and more ridiculous. There’s, have you come across the cult? There’s a cult in the bank. (0:41:58) Al: And you come to the bank and once you’ve once you’ve figured out how to enter the cult, (0:42:03) Al: you can then enter the cult and then the cult members give you different things for defeating a certain number of enemies. And the stuff in the cult is really funny. And just the concept of having this random room in the bank that happens to have a cult in it is very funny. And there’s another one which is like a portal. There’s a portal to hell in this bank. (0:42:27) Jonnie: No! See, that’s the thing, I feel like I’ve played a decent chunk of the game and I haven’t come across anything that absurdist, which is one of the misses, right? (0:42:28) Al: Did you know that? (0:42:30) Al: Did you know there’s a portal to hell? (0:42:31) Al: I… (0:42:38) Al: Yeah. So I think part of the problem is those are the lent into the rogue light stuff of that. (0:42:45) Al: Those are randomized. So as you unlock, the lift can do more and more things, (0:42:52) Al: and you’re not guaranteed to see any of them in any run. And I think that’s where it (0:42:58) Al: falls down for me. I think if these rooms all existed in fixed places in the bank that you could go to. I think that would be better. (0:43:08) Al: Because then, you know, this is… (0:43:09) Jonnie: yeah or if there was a small a small pool and you kind of like you can still have some element of randomness but not as not as (0:43:20) Al: Yeah, maybe, maybe. I mean, yeah, I think, I think making it, the advantage of having a fixed place is when you look on the map, you see there’s a bunch of rooms and you’re like, “Oh, I need to unlock that room at some point then, and there’s going to be something in that room.” The problem is that all of these, you don’t know when you’ve seen all these areas, because they’re randomized with the lifts. There’s like some random underwater one as well, I think. (0:43:41) Jonnie: Yeah, that’s fair. (0:43:50) Al: And like, yeah, whatever. That absurdist stuff, I think, is very funny still. And yeah, some of the callbacks have been very funny. Some of the callbacks have felt very contrived, and yeah, (0:44:06) Al: it’s an interesting mix of those things. I think the problem is that if it wasn’t funny at all, (0:44:13) Al: I would be like, “Oh, it’s one and done. We’re done with this.” But the problem is, I think, (0:44:18) Al: they can do more of that. (0:44:20) Al: the same humour and still surprise me. And that’s where I’m like, don’t lean too hard onto the same jokes. Do the more stuff because I know you can do it. And if it needs to be a smaller game, then make it a smaller game. I’m okay with that. If there are going to be fewer characters in each room, that’s fine. Like, because the second, the room you unlock after the first boss is where, like, most of the previous game’s characters are. (0:44:50) Al: They’re just there. Why? Because their previous place doesn’t work and it’s like, “OK, you destroyed their previous place by killing Turnip God. OK, fine, sure. That’s mildly amusing.” (0:45:02) Al: Why are they in the bank? That seems contrived to me. That’s not even absurdist humour. That’s just contrived just so you can get these characters there. (0:45:14) Jonnie: Yeah, I think that’s fair in life because they do explain the reason for it and even the reason is like that feels like contrite reasoning. (0:45:26) Al: So, yeah, I think I don’t think any of that would have saved it for you. (0:45:34) Jonnie: No, I don’t think so (0:45:35) Al: I think it would have made me have more fun with it. (0:45:41) Al: But overall, I still enjoyed it. (0:45:42) Al: Would I have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t a roguelite and it was more like the previous game? (0:45:47) Al: Probably. (0:45:50) Al: But they did manage to make a roguelite that I like, (0:45:53) Al: which is a very rare thing. (0:45:56) Jonnie: Yeah, I mean, that’s a… (0:46:00) Jonnie: Honestly, I’m shocked that you like it, because when I started it, it was a rogue life. (0:46:04) Jonnie: And I was like, “Oh, I was expecting just the same as the previous game, but with guns as weapons now.” (0:46:12) Jonnie: I was like, “Well, Al’s gonna hate this, so we’re just gonna come out here and rage about this game for 40 minutes.” (0:46:12) Al: I mean, I do have more complaints. I can bring up more complaints if you want. So there are more weapons in this game than you can actually get in your base, right? So the way it works is like you’ve got your base and you go out to the bank, you do a run, you come back and you’ve got upgrades and, you know, your usual roguelite loop. The problem is… (0:46:21) Jonnie: Oh. (0:46:42) Al: that when you go out into the bank, there are quite a wide variety of different weapons that the guys that are making new weapons back at your base, say, are rudimentary, which a lot of them are. But some of them are better in ways that I find frustrating. The chainsaw is an incredible weapon that you unlock later on. But there’s other ones… there’s very, very few… (0:47:12) Al: I think there’s only… there is only one melee weapon that you can actually get from your base, (0:47:17) Al: which is very frustrating to me because I much prefer melee to guns because I’m not very good at aiming. Yes, yes, it’s very difficult. So I would have liked to have had more melee weapons that you can unlock. Melee, melee, melee! (0:47:26) Jonnie: And aiming in this game is bloody annoying. (0:47:40) Jonnie: Well, hey. (0:47:42) Jonnie: Yeah. (0:47:42) Al: Melee, melee… anyway, whatever you know what I mean. I don’t want to hear about my pronunciation, (0:47:44) Jonnie: Uh… (0:47:46) Jonnie: Ah. (0:47:46) Jonnie: Bye. (0:47:47) Al: please don’t tell me about my pronunciation, thank you listeners. I would have liked more of that because I don’t know whether it’s just something I’ve missed, but there’s almost no (0:47:56) Al: melee weapons that you can unlock, which I found a bit frustrating. (0:48:02) Al: So that’s my big thing. There’s no way to like… when you find something in the bank, there’s no No way to get it, except just picking it up. (0:48:10) Al: And if you die with it, that’s it. (0:48:12) Al: You’ve lost it. (0:48:13) Al: It’d be nice if you could recreate those things, (0:48:16) Al: because some of them are really nice weapons. (0:48:18) Al: I really like them. (0:48:19) Al: And this probably leans into the like, (0:48:21) Al: oh, well, that’s how roguelites work. (0:48:22) Al: OK, sure, fine. (0:48:23) Al: But the bits I like about this game are the non-roguelite bits. (0:48:27) Al: I’ve literally just spent 20 minutes telling you why this game is good, because it doesn’t do roguelite things in the same way that other roguelites do. (0:48:37) Jonnie: Yeah, I just, yeah, I find this game immensely kind of frustrating, and I think that weapon piece is a good example, where it just kind of feels needlessly difficult, why not just let us unlock all of the weapons at some point, you know, that’s kind of one of those things that’s like, there’s nothing wrong with being able to use all of the weapons, so let us use all the weapons. (0:48:56) Al: Yeah, maybe not all. There is one you get at the last boss, which is just a ridiculous weapon. (0:49:11) Al: It’s like four times the size of you. It’s very fun to use. It’s very slow. It actually slows your character down a lot, which is quite interesting. But as lovely video game logic, (0:49:24) Al: it only slows you down when you’re holding it. (0:49:26) Al: If you switch the weapons and it’s in your bag, you can run as fast as you normally do, which I just love, but whatever. (0:49:31) Jonnie: Amazing. (0:49:32) Jonnie: But see, even that would stand out more if it was the only instance of that, right? (0:49:37) Al: Yes, yeah, I agree. I think I would keep that one, especially because you can’t– (0:49:42) Al: although you don’t need to defeat any boss after you’ve defeated them, you can if you want. (0:49:47) Al: So it would give you a reason to go and do that. (0:49:50) Al: I would say maybe the four boss weapons, the weapons that the bosses have, those four specifically, (0:49:56) Al: has a specific weapon, the last one being the most ridiculous. (0:49:59) Al: But I would understand why those four, if you want that weapon, you have to go defeat the boss in this run. (0:50:07) Al: It adds an interesting element to that. (0:50:10) Al: But the problem is that all the other weapons are very random, and it’s hard to know. (0:50:16) Al: One of them, for example, you get by going through one of the weird lifts into the portal from hell, (0:50:24) Al: hell and you get up. (0:50:26) Al: a scythe that you can if you kill somebody with the scythe you can harvest their soul and then those souls are the second currency with which you can use to buy things. (0:50:38) Al: And. (0:50:39) Jonnie: Okay, that sounds amazing. (0:50:41) Al: It is very fun. It is very fun. There’s actually second weapon in this way there as well. (0:50:47) Al: But it’s it’s a gun. It’s a it’s a record like a vinyl record gun. (0:50:54) Al: Mmm. (0:50:58) Al: Which is very funny, but also the way that it works is very different because it’s records and not bullets. (0:51:05) Al: They bounce off walls, which means you can, if it goes through somebody and then hits a wall and then comes back and hits them, (0:51:13) Al: so if they don’t die in the first one, they die in the second one. (0:51:17) Al: I think this is the thing, there’s lots of really fun and creative ideas in the weapons, even if they’re not the best combat system. (0:51:27) Al: But you were never going to see those because you don’t have the enthusiasm for the type of game and so you miss out on that fun, which is disappointing. (0:51:36) Jonnie: Yeah and some of it I think speaks to the onboarding right because like even like fundamentally the premise of the game being that you’re robbing a bank and there’s like a huge cutscene that follows on from you know turn a boy commits tax evasion and where that game ended but ultimately it’s kind of like the but why yeah like there isn’t really a compelling reason for why you are even robbing the bank which I find like it’s just one of the things frustrating I did have a question how do you feel about the timer? (0:52:07) Al: So I don’t hate the timer and that’s because it is not a hard timer. So the way the timer works is once the timer hits the police come, but you it makes it makes everything harder because there’s more enemies, but you can still do everything. So you can infinitely do a run as long as you’re not dying. And I actually really like that way of doing it. (0:52:37) Al: Where they’re trying to force you to be quick about things, but if you’re like ‘oh I can just grab that one last thing’ and it means that the timer is going to run out, you don’t die, you just have to fight your way out. I quite like that. For what they’re doing, (0:52:54) Al: for everything that they’re doing, I think it works thematically and mechanically well with what they wanted to do. Is that fair? (0:53:02) Jonnie: Yeah, I think that’s fair. And for me, it’s another aspect of like, I just don’t like feeling time pressure in games, something that I fundamentally do not enjoy. (0:53:12) Jonnie: And when the combat is bad, and I would prefer a slower approach to it, like, I get why they did it because they’re wanting to put that sort of heist style pressure on. (0:53:26) Jonnie: And it’s kind of one of those ways that they can do to force you to do multiple runs, right, without the timer. (0:53:32) Jonnie: I think the game would be significantly different, and not necessarily better. I just don’t want a timer. (0:53:42) Al: Yeah, that’s fair. That’s fair. Yeah. Yeah. And I agree with you generally. I don’t like timers in games, but I can’t explain why, but I really like this game. I’m going to finish the game. I’m going to do that. I don’t normally, I don’t often do that with games that we talk about. If I’ve not finished it by the time we podcast and it’s not like (0:5

The tech industry is renowned for expensive startup costs and never-ending elevator speeches. Kevin Lancaster is the Co-Founder of a company that's changing the game, connecting service providers and vendors on a level playing field. As the CEO and Co-Founder of Channel Program, Kevin has been named one of the Top 25 Software Sales Executives by The Software Report in 2021. He's built channel programs that have generated more than $5 billion in revenue and is a leading authority on cyber security, technology innovation, startup acceleration, and channel program development. His passion for supporting the underdog, creating meaningful partnerships, and making space for diverse voices fuels his work at Channel Program. Kevin has an unrelenting drive to revolutionize the IT channel by empowering and inspiring both vendors and IT service providers to focus on community-building, collaboration, and respectful communication–a formula he believes will lead to greater success and health for the channel as a whole, along with its thousands of partners.  How personal branding contributes to MSP success Kevin has two main recommendations for anyone looking to build a successful MSP. The first is to build a strong personal brand–post consistently online, share thought leadership content, and be transparent about what you're doing and why. Both Kevin and his business partner have spent years building their brand and reputation in the industry. The second recommendation is to take a sales class, especially if you're an introvert or selling is outside your comfort zone. Get comfortable talking to customers and build relationships. These two skills work hand-in-hand, as creating a personal brand will also help you sell more effectively.  Creating an open and accessible community After working in the industry for years, Kevin realized that the largest vendors were pricing out emerging competitors. At trade shows, for example, the larger companies held a monopoly on keynote speeches and the best booth locations, while newer startups were relegated to the sidelines.  Kevin and his business partner wanted to give those scrappy startups an opportunity for equal access. So they launched a virtual event, Channel Pitch, where every company received seven minutes to pitch to vendors, regardless of size. The event was a hit and Channel Program grew the platform it is today, where vendors and IT service providers can connect in an open and equal community. Enjoy this episode with Channel Program CEO Kevin Lancaster… Quotes “There are a handful of large vendors out there that are private equity backed, publicly traded, and they have deep pockets. What I'd see at these industry events, is you'd go up and down the rows, and you could see that the big vendors had the pockets to keep out all these emerging vendors. And in my opinion, they were stymying the innovation that could occur within the channel. The small, scrappy startups had these great ideas and great platforms but they weren't getting the visibility.” “Where do we go from here? How do we build a recurring revenue business that provides value to both sides of the industry?” “That's what drives me: trying to solve these problems.” “As we looked at this massive marketplace and all the challenges, we thought, how do you break it down to the common denominator? How do you make it just stupid simple? If I can explain it to my daughter who's 14, then we're onto something.” “We couldn't have done this if we hadn't built strong personal brands. Yes, we had a great product…but really, people were buying us.”   “Yes we want to build a business, but we want to build a business that provides value. When you can be open and honest about that, I think that stuff comes through. And I think people can tell the difference between the snake oil person versus the person who genuinely wants to help create change.” “Creating a personal brand helps you sell more effectively.” Links mentioned in this episode: Channel Program: https://channelprogram.com/  Connect with Kevin Lancaster on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinlancaster/

Jeremy is one of the co-founders of The Mighty Oaks Foundation, a non-profit organization that has been working with veterans and first responders since 2011 with the goal of helping them through their challenges with PTS. One of the most common stats that comes up in discussions that center around veterans is the number 22 which is a number that signifies the amount of veterans who take their own lives each day here in the United States. While the number fluctuates and there is evidence that currently it is far higher than that, the desire for Mighty Oaks and people like us is to take that number and turn it into zero. You can help us with that goal right now! We are joining Jeremy and many others in the 22 for 22 challenge where we are committing to doing something hard physically for 22 days, starting October 21st. During this challenge, we will be seeking to raise money for the Mighty Oaks Foundation so that they are able to continue the amazing work they are doing for veterans. In this episode, Ryan concentrates on executing two distinct campaigns for Superhuman, while Kevin focuses on reaching out to sales leaders. One campaign centers around standard outbound call services, while the other is geared toward closed lost leads within the automation and robotics sector.During one of their conversations, Kevin manages to obtain two additional phone numbers, prompting discussions on the best approach for subsequent contact. In another scenario, Ryan follows up with a lead who had previously shown disinterest and was preparing for a flight. He initiates the conversation by inquiring about the trip and transitions into discussing the prospect's business needs. Meanwhile, in another call, Ryan successfully reaches the company's accountant and secures a lead to the sales department. Kevin underscores the importance of waiting on hold only when it leads to a connection with a more relevant contact if the prospect is well-informed about their schedule.Ryan then engages with a client facing overcapacity issues. He inquires about the client's market and client type, although it remains undisclosed. Despite this, Ryan receives positive feedback yet regrets forgetting to request referrals. Both Kevin and Ryan observe the evolving landscape of cold calls, noting a shift towards cold connections via LinkedIn and email in the current B2B landscape. Kevin adopts a double-tap approach in one of the calls. He underscores the importance of avoiding assumptions about negative reasons for missed calls and emphasizes the need to put oneself in the prospect's shoes. At the same time, he advises against excessive follow-ups, which can become counterproductive. In one of his attempts, Ryan encounters voicemail but remains persistent, continuing with his pitch and attempting to schedule a callback. Kevin recommends placing greater emphasis on live calls and mentions the uncertain legality of ringless voicemails, which should be verified before use. Additionally, they highlight the importance of avoiding text messaging when reaching out to B2B contacts.Throughout these cold call scenarios, Kevin and Ryan offer insights into various engagement strategies. They emphasize the need for thoughtful and professional interactions, persistence, adaptability, and the significance of building rapport to understand how to provide value to prospects by navigating their company structure to find the correct contacts. Ryan: "I did not ask for a referral as the prospect was a gate-keeper. I still kept going on with the call because the prospect did ask some questions and usually that is an indication. If the seemingly gate-keeper is asking questions, you should consider: what does that typically say about their knowledge or insight of what is going on in the business? You should figure out their competence even if they are in a receptionist or secretary position, you must understand if they have an insight of where the problems lie within the business."Timestamps: [00:00:52] Introduction about Ryan[00:18:24] Generating leads from empty prospects[00:21:39] Adjusting to the prospect's needs and pivoting[00:30:03] Turning rejection into referrals [00:37:37] Reading and understanding gate-keepers[00:44:25] Adapting and building on unresponsive prospects [00:44:50] Remain prepared to be called back[00:49:00] The use of double taps and triple tapsConnect and learn more about Ryan through this link:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanpereusConnect with Kevin:Kevin Hopp: https://www.linkedin.com/in/khopp/More live conversations mean more? (46:07 - 1:09:34) - More Nyheim Hines trade talk and more callers who wonder what he means to the team versus what his trade value is. One caller proposes trading Jackson instead of Hine, which both hosts think won't fetch the same value as you may get for Hines. Talk so far has mostly surrounded trading Hines for a draft pick, but are there any players who we may be able to get for Hines?  (1:09:35 - 1:25:23) - The Colts analyst for IndyStar, Joel Erickson joins the program to talk Hines news and the potential draft moves that may come from the trade deadline. Erickson believe that while Hines is available he won't just be given away. A draft pick may not be enough to peak the Colts interest. He views a third rounder as a pretty good return for Hines, but he doesn't know exactly what Indianapolis is looking for in return for him. Do the Colts need to make any drastic moves before the trade deadline to try and fix their offensive line issues. Are a lot of these trades more to offboard the contract than they are to onboard a player or draft pick.  (1:25:24 - 1:31:32) - The second hour closes out with some college football talk. LSU might have a chance against Alabama. Purdue hosts Iowa, they need to win this one in order to potentially seal the deal for the Big 10 East. In Bloomington the Hoosiers might be looking at a QB change as Tom Allen hints at benching Bazelak for their game against Penn State. Quick recap of the Pacers performance against the Brooklyn Nets last night.  (1:31:33 - 1:55:04) - The Myles Turner clip from Adrian Wajnorowski's podcast is played and Kevin dives into what he sees right and what he sees right with Turner's comment and what he sees wrong with Turner's actions. Turner just hasn't been able to back up his comments with play that matches. The Lakers have very limited moves available that would be worth trading Turner for. Callers weigh in on what Turner's value is to the team and away from the team. Pacers are currently 3-5 and on track to win 30 games this season. Marc weighs the value of tanking for a draft pick against getting another player.  (1:55:05 - 2:11:14) - Dane Brugler of The Athletic's draft analyst joins the show to breakdown where the Colts go after this trade deadline, especially in regard to the 2023 NFL Draft. Kevin asks Brugler to rank C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young as the top quarterbacks available. Are there any players that Brugler sees being a steal in the later rounds of the draft from a quarterback position. Ohio State's Dawand Jones has positioned himself higher in this upcoming draft. Kevin brings up a list of Indiana college talent and asks Brugler where they may land in 2023. Brugler believes that the Colts will likely be searching for their offensive line in the draft more than other teams this year.  (2:11:15 - 2:18:37) - Pop Quiz See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Checking off boxes doesn't always mean that you're getting things done. Both Kevin and I have dealt with these struggles, especially toward the beginning of our careers. Early on, I couldn't afford to pay someone else to do things for me. So, I taught myself how to do them–editing videos, clipping audio, making graphics, etc. Yes, I was sort of forced to do these things, but it got to the point where I felt as though I needed to know how to do these things–and how to do them well. Because if I didn't fully understand them, then I couldn't pass them off to someone else with the proper vision of what I was looking for. Perhaps some level of my ego dripped into this. But regardless, I needed to get some stuff off my plate. Thank you, Kevin…for essentially teaching me how to do so. The truth of the matter? I didn't need to know how to do the extra stuff. I was distracting myself. A lot of the time, you need to just let other people do what they're good at. Their product will show their skill; you don't need to know the ins and outs of every goddamn thing there is.  Sometimes, you're just wasting YOUR time–and that time is simply far too valuable to the expansion of your business. Teagasc specialist Joe Patton and ICBF geneticist Kevin Downing join Emma-Louise Coffey on this week's Dairy Edge to explore the key traits in dairy replacements to maximise income on Irish dairy farms. Joe identifies fertility as the most important trait, regardless of the production system, to ensure cows calf at the right time of the year giving cows the opportunity to remain in herds over multiple lactations. Good fertility performance has a knock-on effect on increasing production potential and reduces the number of replacements required annually which gives rise to greater profitability. Kevin urges farmers to assess the current EBI status of their dairy cow herd and identify any deficiencies that exist. From there, farmers can set the priorities for the future milking cows and select the bull team for the upcoming breeding season accordingly. Both Kevin and Joe emphasised the substantial genetic gain attainable though breeding heifers with high EBI AI straws, but despite this, 30% of dairy heifers born in 2020 were from a stock bull. Joe recommends that farmers consider synchronising programmes to AI all replacement heifers in a short timeframe. Welcome to Hunting & Fishing BC, my podcast about fishing, hunting and other wild pursuits in British Columbia and western Canada. I'm Robert Koopmans and every once in a while, I chat with people about interesting aspects of our outdoor sports. This time around, I talked to John Zubak, a Kamloops hunter who truly embodies the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. John and his family eat only wild meat, a decision they made years ago. That decision gave John's hunting new purpose, and also fuelled a passion for cooking.  To share what he knows about cooking, John hosts a YouTube cooking channel called “In the Kitchen with John” in which he shares pioneer-spirit recipes that are perfect for those who are seeking greater connection to their food. John and I talked about what it means and what it takes to be protein self-sufficient … In the second part of today's show, Kevin Wood and I called up Jeff Maron, a Chilliwack-based archer whose obsession with perfection led him to create his company, Pin-It Custom Bow Strings. Jeff is fanatical about bow string quality and has developed his own system for building quality strings that not only last but shoot arrows to the highest possible standards. It's an interesting chat about many technical aspects of bow strings that most of us probably never think much about. ***Jeff Maron decided pretty early on in his archery career that he could build better bow strings than what is available from most string makers. He carefully studied all aspects of strings and learned how to avoid the common pitfalls that plague archers who don't shoot good strings. Jeff promises his strings will never stretch and will last tens of thousands of shots. At the same time, they will provide dependable repeatable performance that will translate into new levels of accuracy. Both Kevin and I have bought strings from Jeff, and both of us will wholeheartedly agree — Jeff knows how to build high-quality strings. Visit Jeff's website at https://www.pinitcustombowstrings.com to learn more… ***** Thanks for listening to this week's episode. Today on The ProVision Brokerage Celebrity Segment Original “Shark” on Shark Tank Kevin Harrington and His Mentee Share Why Mentorship Amid COVID-19 Uncertainty is Your Most Powerful Tool To Succeed in Business and Beyond. The two co-wrote the groundbreaking new book Mentor to Millions: Secrets of a Success in Business and Beyond, (Available September 2020) and I'd love to book them for an interview with you on your show to talk about why, perhaps now more than any time in our history, entrepreneurs, business owners and beyond should look towards finding a mentor for guidance through this time of grave uncertainty and distress. While Americans believe that having a mentor is important, less than half of the American population (46%) claims that they have one. Both Kevin and Mark are ready to change that narrative, especially in a time where meaningful guidance and connectivity is arguably important now more than ever. "The importance of having a mentor is simple — you are learning a great deal of knowledge (and life experiences) from someone who has already walked the walk, someone who knows a great deal about what you want to learn,” says Harrington. Kevin Harrington and Mark Timm are available for interviews by appointment to discuss their book, Mentor to Millions, and discuss key takeaways and lessons from their personal journey and book, including: Important lessons Mark learned from Kevin, and how to apply it across all areas of your life Leading your family like a business; and why you should be doing it Finding a business mentor How to become a mentor and the importance of doing so Why mentorship is essential to entrepreneurs How to be a mentor to your kids Going into business with your mentor: the do's and don'ts

Goal setting is something that should be very personal. As you move to senior finance roles you need to take charge of your own destiny. You set your own goals, independently. We believe that goal setting starts with understanding your why? Only once you understand your why can you move to the what? The specific goals you want to achieve. Setting the goal is all very well, but you also need to address the how? How exactly will you achieve your intention? Do you plan for a whole year? Both Kevin and Catherine agree that a year is much too long to plan. A year looks too far into the distance and there are too many unknowns. Catherine plans monthly. Goal setting for Kevin is the next 90 or 100 days, but then he breaks this down into months. What is your why? Both Kevin and Catherine believe you need to understand your purpose, your own particular why? Only when yo have this can you naturally start goal setting. Do you understand what motivates you? What excites you? Kevin has a single motivating purpose. A single motivating purpose isn't a destination its a state of being. Its expressed as "I wake up in the morning to do xxxxx in order to xxxxxx" A number of resources to help: If you are looking to better understand your own why? The following books will help: Strengthsfinder 2.0 https://amzn.to/3hiOHjF Unique Ability https://amzn.to/37Kdhqq Goal setting: around your strengths or your weaknesses? Kevin believes you should focus your objectives around your strengths. Strengths are things you can develop to mastery, while weaknesses are things you are likely only ever to be mediocre in. Catherine points out that to really develop you need to get out of your comfort zone, so don't interpret strengths as just things you are comfortable doing. Think about new skills you might need to develop. Goal setting. The what? Once you understand your personal why? articulating the goals you want to achieve becomes easier. Catherine has two or three big goals. She breaks these down into intentions. The goal describes the outcome you want Catherine writes down 10 intentions each month, written as if they already happened. The intention breaks down the goal Affirming the goal is very important. You need to enjoy the journey to achieve your goals and intentions. If you believe in what you want to achieve you will achieve it Goal setting. The How? Think of goals as projects. Organise your tasks and activities as you would a project. Think also about people. Who are the people I need to engage? Make your goal setting smarter: SpecificMeasurableAchievableRealisticTimeboundExcitingRelevant Focus on one or two key things: Whats the most important thing to do today / this week? He spent a lot of his youth surfing and skateboarding. He graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in Marketing which he put to use in the Pharmaceutical industry where he had spent most of his working career in Sales and Sales Management until he left that career to focus 100% on Fun In Motion Toys, the business He and his business partner Jimi Dennison built over the past decade. Both Kevin and Jimi never really intended to build a toy company and were simply motivated by the mission of spreading the physical and mental benefits of Poi through the Spinballs product they developed. However, one thing led to another and here they are with several award winning products including the two time Toy of the Year finalist Shashibo. One thing that all of the Fun In Motion Toys products have in common are the bonus of having physical and mental benefits as well as being fun. Both Kevin and Jimi have found these products to help them cope with their own stresses including things like ADD/ADHD in their own lives. They are big believers in the power of play at any age and even enjoy activities like Juggling, Fire performance and going to concerts and music festivals including attending Burning Man.   Jimi graduated with a CS degree and met Kevin while working in South Florida. Together they took a hobby, poi, and created the business Spinballs to share the activity with the world. Since that time the company has added several products and Jimi relocated closer to where he grew up, outside of DC. Despite the distance they continue to push Fun In Motion Toys forward. You can find me on Cameo here!   TRANSCRIPT:  Hello everyone. My name is Peter Shankman. You are listening to Faster Than Normal. We believe that ADHD is a gift, not a curse and that all forms of neurodiversity are valid. We're glad you're here.  It is another episode coming to you live from my apartment because, well, it's almost the end of 2020, and no one freaking goes anywhere anymore. We all just sit at home and stare at a computer, which I suppose is. Not much different than what we did a year ago. We just did it somewhere else. Now we're here. This is everyone. Jerry Seinfeld, that a bit about that. Where, where, where, when you're out, that's out, everyone says, Oh, they went out. This is what they're doing. So I guess this is where we are right now. Anyway. Good to be here.  We are talking to Kevin Daniels and Jimmy Dennison. They are the founders of Fun In Motion Toys, which is a really cool company I met them through an old friend; a guy named Barry Schwartz, who is my PR mentor all the way back in the day. Like we're talking like late nineties here, early, early back in the day. But Kevin and Jimmy built a company called Fun In Motion. I found out about them because Barry, who knows that I am ADHD, he said, Peter, I'm sending you something. You're going to love this. It's called the Shashibo, which I just found out a few minutes ago. Uh, Oh, I'll let I'll let them tell you what it is, but it's this really cool thing that I've been playing with them and literally can not put that out. It's sitting right here on my desk. I'm not gonna play with it during the interview because you'll hear it. It'll it'll, it'll take all the noise and, and you'll hear it. Anyway. Kevin and Jimmy welcome- glad to have you.  Thank you. Thanks for having us.  So explain first of all, what the sushi is and, and, and, and explain it in such a way that people understand why I'm so in love with this.   Okay, well, I'll try and do that. And Jimmy can cut in, but, uh, Barry, by the way, who you mentioned actually is the man who did the Rubik's cube. Oh, I love well aware. Yeah. So he launched a Rubik's cube. He came to us at toy fair this year and he was like, I got to work with you guys. And we were like, yes, you do. And it's been awesome. So basically think of a cube, but instead of trying to solve it, what this does is it opens up into over 70 geometric shapes. So it looks like a cube and you can open it up in a shapes, like an actual star where it has points six points. It can things we call the hive. It can create into a dodecahedron ball, which is the inverse of the complete outside of the cube and there's all this geometric, it's like, there's a little bit of math. It's, you know, people talk about STEAM and steam, right? Science, technology, engineering, art, math, and this has a little bit of all of that. It's got the symmetry of art. We even have an artist series working with the godfather, or the father of digital art Laurence Gartel. He made some limited edition. He taught Andy Warhol had a new digital art. So that's the kind of guy he's, he's serious. Um, so awesome Art symmetry. Then you have the math, which is the geometry. Uh, you also have the science of the magnets. There's 36 rare earth magnets in each of these, which are small, strong magnets that allow it to hold its shape; otherwise it would just crumble. And then the other side benefit is you learn about polarity of the science of the magnets, because you can combine multiple Shashibo’s to create larger structures. So it becomes infinite. Um, and it's really mind blowing when people it's unfortunate in this medium, it's all verbal, but it's like when you see it visually, it really is stunning and mind blowing. I mean, that's the common reaction is people can't believe it. And, uh, you know, there is the, I said the structural part, so that's almost like the engineering side. There isn't so much technology. And in fact, that's one of the benefits is it's getting people off of their technology for a change to do something creative, to work together or by themselves. So we're excited. It's been great.  We'll uh, we'll put a couple of pictures and, or video if we can find it, um, into the, uh, Into the podcast. You'll see it, uh, on the, on the show host on the show notes page, [PICTURE HERE] but, uh, yeah, it's a phenomenal, phenomenal, uh, toy. I've been having a blast with it. Certainly a lot of fun. So how did you guys come up with the, see your, I know one of you or both of your ADHD?  Well, I mean, I guess we both have our own little things, but in, in my particular, it was just kind of funny how this happened because you had, I don't think he had, we didn't work together, come on this podcast because of it, but I have to say, and it's not something I think about a lot, but I definitely have that adult ADD, ADHD. So when I was a kid, I even look back and I think it's probably, I don't keep up with the whole community of ADD ADHD, but I'm thinking there's a common, uh, acceptance that. Decades ago. It wasn't so known. And when I was the kid in school who threw the compass that stuck up into the ceiling of the classroom, going to the principal's office, I have a feeling that was my add ADHD acting up. And later on in life, as I had careers, I was in the pharmaceutical industry as a sales rep. And I was going to mention this, but, you know, I had times where paperwork would definitely overwhelm me. I did go see somebody about it. And he prescribed Adderall and I did it for a little while. And then I felt like, you know what? I don't know if it's, like you said, it's not necessarily a curse. Sometimes it's a blessing. I feel like all the things I've accomplished in my life are probably fueled by me battling with my ADD ADHD. And I don't know if I'd really want to change that I'm, I'm driven. I'm not as efficient as I could be, I stay up really late. But I get things done. So I've learned to work with it. And I feel like there are career paths out there for people who can actually harness this, uh, you know, this ability, it's almost like a superpower, even though some people may see it as a negative, but I think there's different ways to approach it. So I didn't know this was going to come up, but here you go.  Well, the fact that you understand it, um, and that you understand, you know, how to take, how to use it to your advantage. Uh, you know, you mentioned that that the majority of your successes and things like that have to do with, uh, you know, your ADHD and that's a theme that you hear, uh, and almost every single one of our guests, this is that, you know, once we realize, Hey, here's our differences and we learn how to embrace them. You know, things got a lot better and, and, and, and our, our, our, our lights shown. Or shined as it were, they were able to, uh, to, you know, we were able to really come out of our shell and, and, and do the things that we were capable of doing.  Um, tell me about one of the things I found really interesting. Um, when you. Decide to create. And I just, this fascinates me, right? I don't have, I have the design skills turnip. Right? I do not have any designs. So thank God. My, my daughter takes after her mother in that regard because I cannot, I couldn't drive here and saved my life. And you know, I, I look at, uh, Sashibo and playing with it. How did you come up with something like that? What, what, what, at what point did your brain say, Hey, this would make a fun toy. Right? How did it come to fruition?  Yeah, I have to say it's a little different than you might be suggesting. It's, uh, I didn't invent it. Um, but what we did do is we have a connection of friends and people just along the way that at one thing's fallen into the, into place seat along the way, just as we met with Barry, as you mentioned, but. Uh, you know, Jimmy and I started over 10 years ago with a product called spin balls. That was our first toy. And it was just a ball on a string it's Poi, if anybody knows it goes back hundreds of years, the Maori people of New Zealand. So there was nothing out there that was really affordable, accessible. It had led lights that w you know, the ones I had would break, they were expensive. So it kind of started us down this path because we love the physical, mental benefits of Poi, and that's still a mission of ours, but as we got into it, one, two, our first toy fair. Just one thing led to another and we ended up with this other toy mosey. And then last year we launched a Sheba and Wandini and we have other products on the, in the future that we want to come up with ourselves, or we have, you know, connections with people. So Sheba specifically as an inventor, Andreas Hoenigschmid, he's from Germany lives in California in Venice beach. She's an artist mathematician. We just have a lot of things in common. And that's how we met was through our, we do fire performance. Uh, we've gone to burning man. We're in all kinds of weird stuff, you know? Um, but it's just so happens to connect it. He was working on this and just didn't have a way to get it out there and it fits so perfectly into what we were already doing. And I guess the rest is history, but it's his invention and creation. He's got even more things, uh, for the future that we're going to work on. My daughter is, is fascinated with it. Um, she brought it to school today and I'm curious to see if she actually makes it home with it because, uh, chances are, you know, every kid is going to kind of wanna play with it. We had a play date. She's seven she's, seven years old, seven and a half. She had a play date last week and, um, they were supposed to have a pool in my building and they sat, you know, thanks to COVID you have to make reservations now right. And if they're five o'clock reservation, they were 30 minutes late to it because they sat. In, in my apartment that they would not stop playing with this then. And, uh, it was, you know, I'm like guys, cool. I've never had it. I've never had to convince my kid to go to the pool. But, um, I personally, I love it. 70 different shapes. Um, it's a lot of fun. The fun is trying to get, get it back to the square that it starts at.  But, um, do you find that, have you gotten feedback from people, um, with a neuro-diverse brain. So ADD tactile, things like that, where they talk about it because I immediately saw. Uh, the benefit in it from my mind, just to keep it in my hands and have something to touch and to play with and to, you know, make shapes with, as I'm working, as I'm talking, as I'm doing whatever. Yeah. Actually I want to, I want to get Jimmy in on the conversation, but if I can just start it, we've gotten numerous emails over the last several months. I mean, we had one that was like a 12 year old who said that she was in Northern California and was dealing with a lot of things, the anxiety, because of both the lockdown from the pandemic, and also the fact that there were wildfires in her, not from her home. So her and her kid, her, her and her brother and sisters were using the Shashi. No, I mean, they were just basically thanking us and saying how great it's been for them as a way to deal with the stress. And I mean, that's pretty powerful hearing it from a 12 year old and, uh, they wanted to, they were saving up money to get into another one. So we sent them one for free just for like, why not, you know, how can you not? And, and we were just thankful, but we've heard more and more of this anecdotally.  So I actually, my background, as I said, it was in pharmaceutical. So I have friends that are involved in clinical research. So I've heard everything anecdotally from use in autism, uh, ADHD, as well as, um, Alzheimer's, I mean, we've actually heard and at the toy fair this year there were several physical therapists that deal with adults and, and, and, um, Alzheimer's that have seen benefits. So all of our toys, it's not strictly Shashibo, but that is our, our biggest best, but all of them have a little bit of a sensory therapy effect, which is why we're actually looking to launch a fund emotion, health website, which would allow us to pinpoint that once we have more clinical data to support it right now it’s anecdotal. But I think it's obvious in some ways, but if I could let me throw it to Jimmy, because he's really involved in that and I wanted to let him chime in a bit. If you don't mind.  Yeah, thanks, Kevin. Um, well I guess the, that you mean is the fund emotion, health website, and that's a, a work in progress. Like he said, we were kind of gathering what anecdotal evidence there is to just maybe draw, um, a nice picture across all of our products and each one of them has a little bit of a different story. Uh, but specifically to the Shashibo, I think the one story that really hope to me and convince me that it was worthy of promoting the line, you know, we're, we're a toy company, so we're primarily focused on promoting ourself as boys the whole time we've recognized that there's a much bigger value in the type of play. And, and that's a, that's a big conversation, but. Um, running fund emotion, health as a, as a business was only, um, really apparent with the Shashibo or hearing. For instance, there was, uh, a lady working with a gentleman with Alzheimer's. She described that, um, as his functioning declined and I guess this isn't exactly the topic of add or ADHD, but in terms of therapeutic use, as  its functioning declined. His hands use declined to the point of very stopped using, um, pencils. They couldn't get him to engage with things in a useful way, putting them down. And after a couple of weeks of playing with the Shashibo, which is amazing unto itself that he didn't put it down. Uh, he, he actually picked up a pencil again. So there's just, I don't know. I might not have realized the full depth of it when I first picked it up, but there's a lot of people who have, and, um, it's pretty awesome.  One of the interesting things I noticed looking on your website is you, you, it's not just, I mean, there aren't you, so glow toys, fidget toys, um, the glow toys actually look really cool. What happens? What are your, are your, um, what, how do I phrase this? What are your, uh, what do you look for when you say, Hey, that's going to make a cool toy. Like, I mean, the, the, the, um, what am I looking at right here? The, uh, the Wandini looks pretty awesome. Right. And it seems like a lot of fun. What do you look for when you say, okay, this is, we need this in our repertoire. Yeah. You know, some of the things we have or just things that existed, but just were not made available to the mainstream. So we're into like a lot of like juggling Jimi and I juggle, we do all these,  we get access and exposure to things that not everybody sees. So, you know, with spin balls, which is the Poi, that's something that was more like, uh, you'd see at music festivals, there weren't that many people who are really into it, but we saw the benefits for kids and all of that and we were like, we really want to make something. So that's what we did is we created and we got patents on our design that made it so unique, but it's not the point in the existed had been around for hundreds of years, like I said, so the wand actually comes from the dancing cane magic trick that had been around for a long, long time as well. But as far as doing it in an LED fashion and also collapsible where you can break it apart, this has never been done. So this was our motivation, but the one thing that also ties it all together is the cost and the price point, like we have different toys. Like our things are premium, more quality. We don't just put out schlocky stuff like just to make money. It's like, these are things that motivate us that we like playing with ourselves when we go to a fair, like toy fair, or spending the day, just playing with these enjoying demonstrating. Cause we enjoy doing it. And it's awesome to see people's reactions. So, you know, constantly we're looking for things that fit that mold that we want to play with ourselves first off. And then we have to decide, is this something that makes sense? You know, just this weekend I had an epiphany that, you know, nobody's making a, an affordable led, juggling ball, everything out there is either garbage and, and, and, you know, you get what you pay for, or they're very expensive on the high end. So with our Poi, we can make a version of that simply and put it out there. Juggling is a big market so that these are there's things that pop into my head, but we have like unique can interesting new toys, like Shashibo that nobody's seen before. And we plan on continuing to add those.  I would definitely suggest that you guys are a, uh, I, there's no question that you guys go to burning man. I can hear it in everything you say. I also think you guys would make great skydivers because there's always someone at the drops zone spinning the goddamn fire. Always, always someone’s.. but very, very cool. Um, so the, the website is, uh, www.FunInMotionToys.com Right? I do know that the Shashibo was sold out currently on your site. So I'm assuming that by the time this airs, that will be, that will be rectified and there'll be more. Is there, is there a massive demand for it right now? Uh, I'd say so. It was, um, you know, we kind of expected it, but we're really only now finally realizing the potential. I mean, we, we, we went into it realizing at first there was a lot of people who, you know, downed it, who didn't realize, or didn't. I see, like, why is this not $7? And that's a common thing. This should be like all the other cheap cubes. Right. But they don't get the fact that this is, you know, the, the, the magnets without them. It can't, it wouldn't exist. And the magnets are not cheap. In fact, our costs just went up, but we're keeping our costs to the consumer the same, but our costs are fluctuating because rare magnets are kind of a commodity that are, you know, It's not that they're hard to find and that they're limited, it's just, it's a misnomer, but there is definitely some fluctuation in the cost and, and it makes it a little bit challenging. So, um, anyway, I think I lost my train of thought here. You were asking about, uh, Haha, a little ADD there. No, it's, um, you know, the second you touch it, you feel that it's not, it's not just the cheap, uh, you know, it's not just something you get in a, uh, in a jack in the box , you know, to think, but no, I'm very, very cool. So, so fundamental toys.com. I really appreciate you guys taking the time it's we are just, just starting to learn, um, all the therapeutic, uh, possibilities that toys, um, allow for in, in add adult, add ADHD, uh, autism kids on the spectrum, uh, executive function. Y’know. we're, we're really starting to see more and more of that. We've had a couple of people on the, um, on the podcast, a couple of doctors who have, who have talked about, uh, the aspect of play and how we really don't have enough of it in our lives, especially, uh, when we become adults, there was a, we had a, we had a scientist [Dr. Debbie Rhea interview] who did a study, um, in Texas where they, they increased school district, they increased, um, Uh, recess from 30 minutes a day to 90 minutes a day. And they saw a massive, massive drop in ADHD outbursts from boys and also a massive increase in girls paying attention of wanting to speak out in class. So we were just, just at the tip of it. So I think you guys are, I think you guys are doing something really cool and, uh, you're in the right place at the right time. So we can definitely get you guys back on again. Uh, sometime the next six, six or seven months that we'll see how, how you're doing and what you're doing next that makes I'm looking forward to that.  Yeah, we appreciate that, that’s great. One thing get dimension is that, you know, you're asking about the success of it. So this is last year. It was up for toy of the year, which is like kind of the Oscars of the toy industry. So it's a big deal. We were up against Mattel and Hasbro and all the big guys. Lego, et cetera. Um, we didn't win, but we were a finalist which was pretty exciting. And then this year we're up for toy of the year again. So, uh, the Artist Series is nominated. So we're hoping to hopefully win. That would be a big deal for a smaller toy company like ourselves. But that gives you an example. I mean, it's been recognized and that's, you know, that's awards, but then on the, you know, the other side, we just, I hate to promote Amazon, we do great on our website. Go to RunInMotionToys.com, but I'll tell you what, we can't even keep it in stock. I mean, we're in the top 100 of toys on Amazon and that's out of hundreds of thousands. So I was just like, that's really so shocking to us. Like, it's amazing how, uh, how well it's being received. So I appreciate your mentioning it and supporting it. That is great to hear. No, it's a lot of fun, uh, guys from the FunInMotionToys.com. Check it out. It's  so let me get it right. Wait. So I see both. It's actually about, and it stands for shape shifting box, right? I'm telling you just like Nolita. Awesome.  Very, very cool. Kevin and Jimmy, thank you guys for taking the time to me and passing early. I appreciate it. Uh, it was great to hear from you guys, like I said, we'll have you back guys, listen to past the normal as always, if you like what you hear, you have to leave us a review because the more you leave us a review for more podcasts, we can produce have a wonderful week and we will see you guys next week. Real estate investing is a great tool to create flexibility and freedom with time and money. However, there are fears that hold many people back from taking action and getting started. Many would-be investors imagine all of the negative scenarios and never take action to get that first deal. Overcoming fear is critical if you want to get started or scale your business or investment portfolio.   Kevin Galang and Adam Ulery are the hosts of the Tech Guys Who Invest podcast. Kevin is a software sales engineer who invests in notes on the side. He hosts the Note Nuggets podcast which shares bite-size tips to invest in notes. Adam is a business consultant for technology firms and also works with Dreamstone investments in Atalanta as an apartment syndicator.   Both Kevin and Adam faced fear when starting out, but they overcame that fear to get started. Start by understanding what you are actually afraid of. Once you understand the issue, you can seek help to overcome that fear and take action.

Both Kevin and Chase share their viewpoints on how we can best move forward and make a difference together. We encourage all black people to create these conversations with their non-black friends and begin to bridge the gap that systemic racism has created. 3 Black Boss Values We must have these uncomfortable conversations if we want to see genuine change Understand the post-traumatic syndromes that both races have If we want to see true equality, all races must come from an empathetic place Sponsors Black Boss Club Black Boss Shop **Click the timestamp to jump directly to that point in the episode. Shownotes [1:08] Intro to the Episode - Black and White People having conversations about race Kevin introduces his good friend Chase (who is white) and opens the discussion about race They're lifelong friends and it's important to have these conversations with people who are important to you They're keeping it real and honest [2:34] Chase shares his thoughts about what happened to George Floyd Felt different the attention time, whether it's because of quarantine and or because it was highly publicized but it felt different Disclaimer : This may not be politically correct but it's the real and raw perspective Two sides : the black community is taking a stand, and getting the rightful attention Media in the past always put a little bit of doubt on the death of a black person but this time there was no doubt [9:56] Social media and the impact on the masses Apps like Tik Tok, Twitter, Instagram -  kids are now seeing the world as a whole and are seeing different perspectives on life outside of parent views The masses are able to see the youth / kids challenge their parents about their old racist belief systems CNN and other media outlets are can't 100% control the narrative because Social Media is showing what's really happening [7:05] Chase has been educating himself on what black people want the white man to do Believes we should focus on the system that breeds racists and breeds inequality Wants to help and do what he can to help the black community Kevin and Chase discuss why black people have been pointing out the racists or the situations that poke and are subtly racist [12:18] The social media arguments  Chase feels like it's a waste of time to argue and fight with people on Facebook about these issues He believes that we should go after what systematic structures influences racism and who controls the corrupt cops Kevin thinks we need to work from the TOP down and the BOTTOM up, and that way we'll get to the middle, but knows it's taken years to come this far We live in a white supremacist country [14:49] Black Boss Valuable Minute  Kevin shares how you can become a member of the Black Boss Club AND also how you can save 10% off your first purchase at the Black Boss Store. [16:21] Taking a look at the top - court systems, presidents, ceos The top of the top are the most racist, they hold the most money and profit from these systems Kevin shares the book “White Fragility”  The people who are in power and are white don't want black people to be equal because they feel like they'll lose their power [19:16] The “sprinkle of doubt” tactic Has been used to distract the public from what really takes place This tactic has been used since the Black Panther movement, painting it as a military group when it was not Murdering the person who has threatened the throne Social media is starting to showcase the reality [23:53] Chase shares the white supremacists tactic to make “hemp” negative White leaders made the propaganda that hemp or weed was bad They started to plant hemp in the black communities and locked blacks up for it Used prisoners as cheap labor after slavery days Now, weed is legal and white people are making money from it and black people can't get licenses to sell it [29:35] Post-traumatic slave syndrome Generations pass down trauma through their DNA The same energy and pain is transferred down Why don't white people get it? They may have post-traumatic white supremacist syndrome [33:23] Does hunting cause people who have less emotional ties to people dying? Kevin and Chase disagree on this perspective White people who like hunting but why? Does it desensitize people from seeing others die People kill animals without any emotional tie to that animal   [41:27] There are black people who milk the system because they're are born thinking the world is against them There is passed down trauma and hatred through the system White people need to educate themselves and realize there's black people that don't fit the stereotypes they are taught [44:07] Kevin hates when people say check your emotions If these same things were to happen to White people, they'd be emotional too Challenge white people to feel and understand the pain, stop looking for justifications and put yourself in these black people's situation This shit always happens to black people, and they're fed up [49:43] Being woke and “virtue signaling” Somebody who is trying to be morally correct but is challenged by someone else saying you are not being morally correct enough People are being attacked when they're trying to do the right thing Why do white people feel the need to apologize for decades of racism?  [59:07] Chase believes America is not as racist as we are seen to be He thinks we aren't as racist as we are painted to be America was the first time people were enslaved on the color of skin Day to day actions, it's not that bad Racism exists everywhere but America is under a microscope [1:04:25] If you want to learn something, figure it out There's resources available White people need to take the initiative if they really want to learn Figure it out, black people aren't here to make it easier for you [1:07:49] Why are there so many guns in Chicago? In other black neighborhoods? Guns are being planted and dropped in these communities The government sets it up to keep these systems funded They light the fire [1:14:10] How this black jazz member dismantled a group of KKK through a conversation Darrell Davis episode on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast Had a conversation with white people and showed them the reliability Black people have been conditioned and so have white people to think a certain way [1:16:46] Interracial marriages and love Chase's friend shared a post to see how many racists he knows saying “would you let your daughter marry a black man?” People brought up religion and other ideals to explain why they wouldn't let that happen [1:19:21] What is white privilege? Some white people don't like the term because it portrays that their life is easy Chase thinks too many people anchor white privilege on wealth and an easy upbringing but it's not that To him, white privilege is getting the upper hand because of their color or name Benefiting in the workforce due to whiteness Cops not having their hand on their gun when you are pulled over Landlords skipping over the application [1:26:49] How Kevin gamed the system and got away from lack Kevin received opportunities by leaving out his GPA He had other credentials and experiences that weighed heavier than his grades His name also doesn't seem black He worked hard to make the right movements [1:39:38] How can we stop losing focus? The looting and rioting and people being killed, distracting from the reason We need to stay focused on the matter and the reason People with money are trying to change the narrative [1:46:40] Diving into the looting and connection to politics There's a difference between certain types of looting They are setting up bricks and encouraging this behavior People with money are trying to change the narrative The rhetoric on politics is that if you're black then you have to vote Democratic People shouldn't be party specific  Don't believe you have to pick a side [2:00:37] Candace Owens - the modern snitch Conservative black female She has now taken it too far, and is being ignorant  White people using her as an anchor to prove that the black experience is BS Black people view her as a cop-out, racist with a black face [2:08:20] Symbols and their correlation to pain The swastika may cause pain to Jewish people The confederate flag may cause pain to black people, thinking it represents racism The MAGA hat now symbolizes white supremacist pride for this era People need to recognize that certain symbols do cause people pain [2:17:30] We need to fix the system There's only so much that the people can do We need to change the dollar bill, we need wider change You can only march and have a peaceful protest for so long, without proper action being taken MLK was assassinated and he was peacefully protesting The first 8 out of 12 presidents had slaves All of our money has slave owners [2:27:39] Black on black crime  Something that white people use to deflect from police brutality It does not exist “Black on black crime” is another example of infiltrating and propaganda to cast doubt  [2:35:13] What can the black community do to make a change? Learn our history, discover the truth and understand the facts Build ourselves economically, become more entrepreneurial, stop making excuses and take action Make the choice to create generational wealth Personal Development [2:41:11] The Doll Test An experiment where kids of all races asked questions pertaining to Black vs. White Dolls All the positive questions asked was in favor of White Doll All the negative questions asked was in favor of Black Doll [2:43:20] Group Economics Black people have so much purchasing power yet we are broke Different cultures spend money within their community before they spend elsewhere Black wall street was the last community of thriving black people [2:45:46] What can white people do to make a change in the culture? Stop making excuses and using certain areas to defend our point They need to have empathy, understand and see what black people think before creating a counterargument Chase can see this side because he grew up and learned about black people Focus on your hiring practices, where you're spending your money, look at your habits and see why you made those decisions  Check their perspective on police Educate our children that racism is not okay and teach them about white privilege  Resources White Fragility Black Labor, White Wealth Snap Judgment - Daryl Davis podcast Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome

This week I interviewed my friend Kevin Ortner. Kevin is the president and CEO of Renters Warehouse. During this 30 minute conversation Kevin and I discussed everything from the actual single family rental market, marketing and showing activity, and where he sees it going from here. It was nice to have a discussion with Kevin that was positive. Renters warehouse felt an obvious dip in late March, but Kevin's opinion is that they already see April rebounding. Both Kevin and I think that we are going to have a good summer, but we also know some of the things we've experienced will have lasting implications. This interview is one of our weekly webinars that REI masterminds has for its members. In response to the Coronavirus outbreak, I've made REI masterminds free until the end of May. All you have to do is visit TimHerriage.com and click on mastermind. Renters Warehouse manages my rental property, and I highly recommend them. If you would ever want a personal introduction to them, please reach out to me. I am always happy to refer you to the people that I work with directly in my business. I hope everyone staying safe, and finding positive lights during this strange time. As for me, I've been focused on spending more time with my family, of course cooking a lot of barbecue, and I've even been working on some of my flip projects myself. Rhiannon Chesterman is one of the UK's most prolific and talented musical theatre performers, having starred in a variety of productions both in the West End, and in and around the country. Her latest role is the lead, Julia Sullivan, in Kevin's current stage hit, The Wedding Singer! Kevin and Rhiannon took time out from their hectic performing schedule to chat about how Rhiannon got started, how she creates her characters, what life's like as a stage performer, and what keeps her motivated. It's a fascinating insight behind the stage curtain, and essential listening for aspiring performers and theatre-fans alike KEY TAKEAWAYS The Wedding Singer is proving to be a joyful experience, due to the fact the company are all kind, generous and considerate. It's rare for a company to bond and perform so well, and these atmospheres are greatly creative to work in. This is Rhiannon's first large-scale musical lead part. She's played in many shows before, but has never been so heavily featured. It's daunting, but incredible. It's sometimes easy, when playing a part already established by other actors, to simply do an impression of their prior performance. Both Kevin and Rhiannon were keen not to impersonate Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. They simply reflected the spirit and tone of the original film. Rhiannon's approach to portraying a character is to first find out who the character is, and then add her own touches by drawing upon similar memories in her own life. This makes it easier to leave a character at work each night. Critics are useful in marketing a play, but it's useless to try and please all of them. The most important people to please are the audiences each night.  It was seeing a West End performance of Cats that made Rhiannon decide to take up a career on the stage. She devoted herself to bettering her voice through choir work, and slowly developed her vocals and her confidence. Rejection early on in Rhiannon's career didn't deter her from her aim of being a performer. She credits the support of her family during this period, as well as using each rejection to drive her forward. Every shot at a role might be the break you've been searching for. Actors spend so much time rehearsing, and in some cases, investing their own money, into preparing for auditions. It's a costly, exhausting, and sometimes heart-breaking process. But it's all part of being an actor. BEST MOMENTS ‘I always fancy doing some jigsaw puzzles' ‘Each piece of art is different' ‘Comedy comes from a place of truth' ‘Know who you're going to be, and know who your show is for' ‘I do read the reviews, but I don't take them to heart' ‘You have to deal with the down-times. Kevin is in rehearsals for ‘The Wedding Singer' and Stacey is packing as this year she is hosting the Strictly Come Dancing live tour and in this episode, they chat about the live tour and the great professional and celebrity partnerships that are taking part. Both Kevin and Stacey reflect on how it's only when you are on tour with the live Strictly Show tour that you really understand how this long-running series is so much a part of the nation's culture and how loved it is across the generations who watch it. As a much-loved partnership and past winners of the glitterball this is a great opportunity to hear about what goes on behind the scenes and the dances that Kevin and Stacey have particularly enjoyed from the last series, listen in and enjoy.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Each performance is set up like an episode of strictly with couples all performing and every night on tour someone wins the glitter ball with the audience voting via text. At the end of the tour the couple who have won the most performances are crowned champions of the tour and receive the prestigious tour glitterball.   Kelvin Fletcher & Janette Manrara – we were both fans of Kelvin from early on. It was clear from his first performance that he could go all the way. Emma Barton & Graziano Di Parma. - really pleased Grazts is getting the chance to dance with Emma, as he didn't have a celebrity partner in the series. He's such a sweetheart but people assume he's a bit arrogant which is so far from the truth, he's very kind, considerate and a wicked dancer. Catherine Tyldesley & Johannes Radebe. Watching Johannes perform was a breath of fresh air. When Johannes danced with Grazts he spoke about performing as his true self on a show that's been established for a long time and how important it was for him. Mike Bushell & Katya Jones - He never stops practising because he wants to do his best. When someone isn't a natural dancer and dances are a bit funny, people mistake it as the person not taking it seriously but that is so far from the truth. Karim Zeroual & Amy Dowden. - One of the sweetest girls you could meet. She is unassuming and works really hard. Karim is a brilliant dancer and it means as the professional you have to deliver, there is a great amount of pressure. Saffron Barker & AJ Pritchard - Saffron was much more comfortable with ballroom. Challenging The Preconceptions Of Dancers – With Josh Keefe

The Kevin Clifton Show

This week, Kevin is joined by dancer and Strictly choreographer and Assistant to the Creative Director of the show, Josh Keefe, who discusses his beginnings in dance, the issues surrounding same-sex dance couples, how he overcame bullying during his youth, the surprising benefits of working in television, and the puzzling modern western attitudes that seem to regard dance as lacking in masculinity. KEY TAKEAWAYS As well as working on Strictly Come Dancing, Josh works on Dancing With The Stars in Australia. Josh actually competed last year with Courtney Act, a drag queen, which has reignited the conversation about whether same-sex couples should be allowed on Strictly. Most people wish to be dancers for the act of dancing itself, but unusually, Josh was drawn to dance and performance because of his love of music. Josh experience bullying as a result of his dancing pursuits in his youth. Attending an all-boys school, his masculinity was called into question by fellow pupils. but Josh's determination and stubborn streak saw him through. Dance is praised among young boys in other cultures, such as China and Russia. In western culture, though, it is frowned upon, which Josh and Kevin find ridiculous. What exactly is the issue with men being in touch with their artistic or feminine sides? Coming from competitive dance, Josh was looking for a fresh challenge. He found it in television, where he was asked to train and perfect dance routines with newcomers on a weekly basis. He has found this challenge incredible rewarding, as it has also helped to develop his skills as a teacher. Other territories are embracing same-sex couples on TV dance shows. Both Kevin and Josh see this development as a wonderful opportunity and hugely important in terms of visibility. BEST MOMENTS ‘At least a hundred years…' ‘I enjoy the connection to the music' ‘I would be the one who would try to disappear in a room' ‘I knew I didn't agree with everything everyone said or did. And I was quite happy with that' 'Shaming boys for dancing is just hilarious' 'Strictlify… that's a word now' 'That's the power of what dance can bring' VALUABLE RESOURCES   The Kevin Clifton Show - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-kevin-clifton-show/id1475650764 Josh Keefe Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/joshuakeefedancer/?hl=en Josh Keefe Twitter - https://twitter.com/joshuakeefe?lang=en Josh Keefe Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/moveforlife.asia/   ABOUT THE HOST   Kevin Clifton is a professional dancer who has been performing & competing at the highest level for over a decade. The Higher Purpose Podcast’s new intro clarifies what the show is about and that it is for people who have chosen the road less traveled in business, in leadership and in life. Host Kevin Monroe says who better than Mike Vacanti to share the first conversation under this new banner? Mike is the first guest to appear on the show three times in a calendar year.  Kevin congratulates Mike on the launch of his first book, Believership: The Superpower Beyond Leadership. Both Kevin and Mike choose not to accept commonly held beliefs or ‘best practices’ if those beliefs and practices do not make sense to them. Mike calls it having the strength to resist becoming someone else.  Mike shares an experience of corporate culture, of “feeling that I had to conform and become one of them rather than the best of me.” To his mind, if you’re going to work together, you should enjoy the experience. His way of leading his team was producing high-level results, yet he was told they didn’t like his methods. It led him to make the difficult decision to leave the company in order to stay true to himself. He saw their entrenched ideas of how he should behave as a leader as authority, not leadership. The way he led his team was the way he believed leadership should be. Mike’s book, Believership, emerged from his exploration of the question, What happens because of me? He discovered that his teams performed well together because they all believed in what they were doing and they believed in each other. He comments that we’re in a new era of business so a lot about leadership needs to change. He wants to open up the dialogue about what that change looks like and what we need to discard to get there. Kevin admires that Mike’s approach is not prescriptive; rather, it is an invitation into a conversation. An idea from Mike’s book that Kevin loves is, Lift Others. Mike says that it is an intention that he starts each day with.  There are repeatable things that we can do to make work better, Mike says, and we should apply those patterns. When they no longer work, we should look for alternatives. Mike is resistant to the term “best practices” as it’s often used as an authoritative statement - the one best way - which closes off ideas, creativity and ingenuity.  Mike talks about his upcoming book launch event at VaynerMedia in New York City. We can do better, Mike says. Things can improve and we can lift others along the journey with us. He sees a decade of difference as an invitation to become excited about the challenges and opportunities in front of us. He encourages listeners to imagine how much we can accomplish this decade simply because of the technology and tools we have available to us. Kevin asks Mike to encourage listeners who may be facing difficult times. Mike responds that we need each other. As such, we should be there for one another. When we can support each other, especially when it’s most needed, we’re actually doing greater service. That is when we’re actually winning, he says. The road less traveled is lonely when you try to go it alone. When you realize that there are people on the same journey as you, it motivates you and gives you hope. There is a ripple effect that multiplies to others. Kevin sums it up in a phrase: Open hearts, love others, multiply impact. To become comfortable with only knowing the next step and taking it, Mike says we should realize that when we take that step forward, our vantage point changes. We can see more clearly what’s possible, and maybe the end result will be much better than what we imagined at the beginning.  Resources Believership: The Superpower Beyond Leadership   Humans First Club Mike Vacanti on LinkedIn | Twitter | Facebook MJVacanti.com  Email: kevin@higherpurposepodcast.com  Call or text Kevin: 678-744-5111 Schedule a call: KevinDMonroe.com/2020

The search for one’s true purpose in life is one of the most daunting questions we humans face – but it doesn’t have to be. Jennifer chats with Kevin Monroe, a self-described servant leader who brings his lifelong study of purpose into his work as a leadership coach and consultant, advising both individuals and companies in their search for purpose greater than themselves. How would you describe Kevin Monroe in one word? According to him, that word is “pilgrim.” Kevin tells Jennifer a little bit about how his outlook has changed throughout his life and how getting fired from his position in the church was exactly what he needed to start the next stage of his journey. After 10 years in telecommunications sales and marketing, and after finding out some hard truths about his long-coveted dream job, Kevin left to join a high-tech startup with some friends. Their timing wasn’t so great; as the dot-com bubble burst in 2001, the company dissolved and Kevin was brought back to that nagging question of purpose staring him in the face. Corporate America is a beast in its own right. Uninterested in returning to the predictable machinations of another corporate position, Kevin took a hard look at what success meant for him and where true fulfillment lay on his path, ultimately moving on to the non-profit sector. The tale of a short-lived career in the non-profit sector is, unfortunately, a dime a dozen. Kevin’s experience was no exception. After losing his job, the next step was a no-brainer: time to start a business. Jennifer asks Kevin about founding X Factor Consulting, LLC and the early days of being out on his own. Unearthing your purpose isn’t just about reaching a destination at the end of a path but navigating a winding road, its direction only visible a few steps ahead. After Kevin landed some clients and got things working smoothly, the question of purpose returned. Jennifer asks Kevin about how he used to think about his purpose and how it has changed over time. In Kevin’s view, purpose is not singular but is multidimensional and multifaceted; he talks about the importance of his family when it comes to purpose and the primacy of relationships. The times have changed. The corporations of yesteryear are catching up to the socially minded ethos of the non-profit sector. Kevin talks about how today’s conversations around balancing profit-making and social good are in line with the thread of servant leadership that he seems to have been following all along. Jennifer asks Kevin about what servant leadership is to him. For many doers and thinkers, the hyper-focus upon the individual leader is counterintuitive. Kevin talks about other-centered leadership, relaying a story about visiting the corporate headquarters of Chick-fil-a and the servant leadership approach of Southwest Airlines. How does one become a servant leader? Jennifer asks Kevin if people are born as servant leaders and if one can learn to shift their way of thinking. According to Kevin, “Little things matter most. And we never know what little thing is going to matter most to whom when.” Sometimes a warm greeting and a handshake can do amazing things. Both Kevin and Jennifer are walking proof that you can change the way you think about leadership step by step, throughout your life. Listen to them tell some stories about leadership experiences in their careers. Kevin also provides insight into the power of servant leadership and why it’s so much simpler and intuitive than it often sounds. Between his podcast – called the Higher Purpose podcast – and his consulting and facilitation work, Kevin’s focus on purpose is driven by the importance of self-driven discovery. There is no universal training program for servant leadership because everyone’s story is different. What Kevin tries to do is create the ideal conditions for companies and organizations to connect with their own story on a deeper level in order to discover, be inspired by and effectively lead with their newfound purpose. While Kevin mostly works with larger companies, he talks about some tools and resources for helping individuals. You can find some of these resources in the links below! So what’s next for Kevin Monroe? Kevin gives us some details about a new interview segment on the Higher Purpose podcast called Profiles of Purpose and drops a few juicy takeaways in the form of some excellent quotes, credited and original: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” – Jim Elliott “Purpose thrives in community, but starves in isolation.” – Kevin Monroe Links and Resources: Kevin Monroe Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Higher Purpose podcast Purpose Manifesto Profiles of Purpose Mike Kim Website Books (affiliate links): Firms of Endearment: How World-Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit Are you struggling with developing your personal brand? Welcome back to this weeks episode of Throttled.  We had a great time with this little motorcycle podcast this week.  Both Kevin and Larry got some riding in, here are the details. Larry-Wednesday, 76 mile roundtrip to club meeting through traffic, Thursday ride to Talbott Motorcycle Museum in Castro Valley-a real treat! (280 round trip on Rever) Saturday, Poker run ride at Mt. Diablo H-D, another 160 or so. Great weather, beautiful roads, and a few other Switchbacks that I saw (2 others out of maybe 125 bikes) Brian Hunnicut invited me to a cornering class at the Little 99 raceway in Stockton, later this month, which I signed up for. Still having trouble imagining me circling the race track on my Harley Switchback. Could remove the windshield and bags, but I really think I want to practice with the bike as I usually ride it. Kevin was able to ride out and attend a local demo day for Indian this past week.  Here is what he rode and his impressions: Springfield Scout RoadMaster DarkHorse Springfield – same engine nice pull, comfortable ride easy to handle, not crazy about handlebar position for my size, same cramped riding position for those 5’11 and taller Scout – Doesn’t feel as small as it is, fun bike, instant power but sluggish top end. Hit the rev limiter earlier than I thought, Fun to ride handles great, wonderful around town or back road local ride bike. RoadMaster — much like the Springfield, liked the handlebar position much better since the bars were in front of me. Side Note – they had a Chieftain with Mini Apes, very comfortable to sit on, was able to take it around the block between rides and I liked the handle bar position the best, seemed to open up the cockpit for the upper body. DarkHorse – I liked this bike the best, Handling of the Springfield great feel, seemed to have a little more shake in the bike, not a ton just not as smooth at idle. Gave me more of a visceral connection to the bike. Ranking the bikes. Scout, DarkHorse, RoadMaster, Springfield After thought : Kevin would love to try a Darkhorse or RoadMaster with Mini Apes on a true test ride. Today’s guest is Bill Troy, who will be the incoming EO Education Chair, and the President Elect for 2018-2019 year. In this episode, Kevin and Bill talk about Bill’s start in entrepreneurship, starting his own business and writing a book, and how EO has helped him navigate some of the twists and turns he has experienced in his career. Key Takeaways: [1:04] Bill shares his “lifeline” — after meeting his wife in college, he left college and went to broadcasting school, and after broadcasting school he got into the radio business for about ten years. When they switched gears to follow his wife’s career, they ended up in Columbus, and he started his own internet-based market research company, Troy Research. [5:15] What did Troy recognize in himself that he had the entrepreneur mentality? For him, the missing piece was sales. After he did that for his work with a market research company, he had the knowledge and the confidence to start his own business. [6:19] Getting integrated into the Columbus community: coming from the city, the adjusting was difficult, but once they settled in their home in Ohio they realized that it is a great place to be. [9:01] Bill’s financial advisor encouraged him to join EO. Immediately, being a part of EO helped Bill realize that all the things that made him think he wasn’t an entrepreneur were actually the evidence that he was an entrepreneur. Bill talks about how he got involved in other aspects of EO, particularly becoming a member of the board. [11:24] Bill talks about the impact of forum as a process, and how the principles apply to other areas of his life. [14:20] This involvement, and the experiences he gained through the work he had to do, actually ended up having an effect on the growth of his personal business. Bill’s story is a great example of the kinds of things people are experiencing by being involved in EO. [16:08] Being able to see and recognize that there is a bottom and top five percent is really important because it leads to the ability to turn one into the other (preferably your bottom five into your top five). [19:00] Bill and Kevin talk about Bill’s book, and how the idea for that came around. As Bill is changing directions in his business to focus more on using online marketing tools for relationship-based marketing rather than impersonal transactions, he is hoping this book will help bring in some others who believe in the same things. [22:57] Where does Bill see things going in the future? For Civilis Marketing, they are working toward building a business that is not “Bill-related.” Ideally as they move forward his wife will take over more over the actual running of the business. Bill also talks about the services they are hoping to provide through Civilis Marketing. [27:11] Kevin asks the age old question: how can he, or anyone in the audience, help Bill out? Bill really wants members to be more proactive about getting involved. When members take ownership of growing their interests through the program, it helps everyone. [31:51] Both Kevin and Bill are writing books — they talk about the different routes of publishing and what the process has been like for Bill so far.   Mentioned in This Episode: Civilis Marketing Troy Research Contact Bill: bill@civilismarketing.com Columbus Chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization

Heisman Trophy talk, BCS National Championship ponderings and should Auburn be in New Year's Day bowl? Alabama linebacker Cory Reamer waves a giant flag on the field at the Georgia Dome after the Tide earned a spot in the national championship game with a rout of the Florida Gators. (The Birmingham News / Hal Yeager) Today, Birmingham News columnists Kevin Scarbinsky and Ray Melick join me to talk about what appears to be the closest Heisman Trophy race in years, early thoughts on Alabama vs. Texas for the national championship and why Auburn deserves a New Year's Day bowl bid. Let's start with the Heisman Trophy. Both Kevin and Ray have Heisman votes. Ray voted for Mark Ingram. Kevin voted for Rolando McClain. What have the reactions been like from Alabama fans to your votes? Did the BCS get this matchup right? Are we certain that Texas is better than TCU, or that Texas is better than Cincinnati? Because I'm not sold Texas is better than TCU. It's possible Texas is. But I think it's possible Texas isn't, and to me that's the unfair flaw in the BCS process. The highest-ranked team Texas beat in the final BCS standings is Oklahoma State. There was no statement victory for Texas like Alabama had against No. 11 Virginia Tech, No. 12 LSU and No. 5 Florida. Did Auburn outmaneuver the other SEC schools with 7-5 records to get the Outback Bowl bid? If so, how did they manage it?   Download The Birmingham News Dec. 10 podcast.
