The Strong Women Power Half-hour is a direct punch to the Patriarchy! Host Kelly Hickey covers topics such as politics, pop culture, spirituality, self-love and more! It's so good to be back with you again! In this episode, we have a real talk about the grief and anger resulting from the American election while also figuring out how to move forward. It's important to be honest with yourself and allow space for your feelings right now. AND it's important for YOU to take care of YOU, focus on what you can control, connect with people around you and purposely create joy (don't dare let them take it away!) We are all gutted that we have so much more work still to do, it seems inhumanely cruel because it is. But like those who successfully fought to remove Brazil's right-wing fascist president, Bolsonaro, we can use their slogan, “Ninguém solta a mão de ninguém” which translates to “No one let go of anyone's hand”, we are in this together. No matter how badly they try to separate us! In this episode we talk about Spring as the season of letting go, cleaning out the old and making space for the new. Letting go is a rarely easy thing to do and yet it's universal to the human experience. So, let's talk about letting go, labyrinths and more! Also in this episode we have a special treat for you, the thoughtful and wise Jane Doull reads out her “Letting go” intro and blessing for us! Hello 2024! Also, how dare you sneak up on me like this. With both feet now in the new year, it's a great opportunity to ask ourselves what we want out of 2024. It's important to take a moment and ask ourselves what our heart's desires and goals are for this year. If we don't take the time to ask ourselves it's so easy to get swallowed up into other things like work, family drama, parenting responsibilities, etc. The world asks a lot of women, and we often oblige. And because of this we need to make a special effort to figure out what we want so that we can work towards it. We need to take a pause, go inward and ask. Otherwise, we are not the main character in our own stories. We are a supporting character to other people's stories. And girlfriend, you deserve to be the main character in the story of YOU. Fortunately, to help you gain clarity and perspective for this year I have a FREE worksheet for you. Super simple. Super helpful. Go ahead, give yourself the gift of ASKING YOURSELF WHAT YOU WANT. And then write it down. This is a great tool for focusing our priorities and better understanding ourselves. Here's the link to the worksheet: https://strongwomenco.com/product/swc-2024-worksheet Also, here's the link to the Connect + Reflect Workbook for processing all that 2023 was: https://strongwomenco.com/product/reflectionworkbook/ For daily inspiration and motivation follow Strong Women Co on facebook and Instagram: www.facebook.com/StrongWomenCo www.instagram.com/strongwomenco To join our FREE online Sisterhood: www.facebook.com/groups/SWCTribe Check out our website for our programs: https://strongwomenco.com Featured song: “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC7cmWkBoz4
Hello again beautiful pod squad! We're back after the summer break and so excited to talk to you about becoming WHOLE. What a concept, right? How do we do that? Well, one way is to integrate the different versions of ourselves we carry around. We may hide away or ignore parts of ourselves, but those parts are still there and they require love and acceptance, too. They are all a part of YOU and all of you deserves love and compassion. So, come gather up all the parts of yourself you've ever left elsewhere and remember your glorious wholeness! Repeat after me (filling your name in the blank): I am here. I am whole. In this episode Kelly talks about how the mothering and nurturing we do makes the world go ‘round. She talks about how being a nurturing leader and mothering are synonyms, even if we have a complicated relationship with the word Mother. She talks about the fears she had about becoming a mother and why self-mothering (or being your own inner-mom) is so important. She also tells the interesting origin story of Mother's Day and the badass, feminist organizer, Julia Ward Howe, who started the special day as an effort to bring women together in the name of world peace. Just wait until you hear the Mother's Day Proclamation of 1870! And we end with a super cute feature song that you *may* want to share with a loved one. It's true. You are. You are doing *so* much better than you think you are. Unfortunately, Women rarely have an accurate view of ourselves (thanks, patriarchy!). Too often, we exaggerate personal setbacks and minimize our accomplishments. It can be easier to remember the critiques and negative stuff than the positive compliments. So, this is a podcast to help you realize that you are actually - and honestly - doing well, great even. Especially considering all you've been through. And how do I know that you've been through a lot? Well, we're women. We brave so much. We endure and survive and soldier on. We keep lives and families and movements going. We are the glue that holds whole worlds together. Take a deep breath, you are doing so much better than you think you are.
In this season of rebirth and awakening, many of us are feeling the call to return to ourselves, return to who we truly are. Most of us have been distracted and over-stimulated from the uncertainty and chaos that were the last three years but now, as we peak our heads outside the cave of winter, we are curious and hungry to get back to ourselves. Returning to ourselves means remembering who we were before the world taught us who to be (and who *not* to be). This is a great time to take inventory of our lives and look at what brings us joy and makes us feel “like ourselves”. It's also a great time to acknowledge what makes you *YOU* and what makes you amazing and unique. What makes you feel strong and healthy? Who do you want to be this year? How could you insert more joy and pleasure into your life to bring yourself *back* from the underworld/otherworld? We discuss this plus more in our latest episode and we finish off with the perfect song to help us come Home to ourselves! It's our first episode of 2023! Let's talk about fables, stories and journeys to the underworld and back. Listen in to hear about the importance of the journey, including the magic in the “darkness”. Kelly talks about Inanna, Persephone, Alice in Wonderland and Dorothy in Oz - all women on important journeys for wisdom, power and their souls. There is so much to learn and grow from when it comes to “the journey”. There's much to accept and be grateful for, even the hard stuff that sculpts us into evolved versions of ourselves. Acceptance and gratitude, our theme and mantra for 2023. So happy to be back! And I LOVE diving into the topic of this episode: yin energy, yule time and the holy days around the winter solstice. This time of year has ancient roots of rejoicing, feasting and being together. So many modern holiday (meaning “holy day'') traditions are based in pagan or nature-centered spirituality and they are beautiful to acknowledge and celebrate. This is the special time of year where we can really “lean in” to the divine feminine, the warm and nurturing things that bring us hope for the future. It's a wonderful time of year to carve out time for ourselves to be still, introspective and grateful. Happiest holidays to all our amazing listeners around the world! 2022 had many lessons, challenges and gifts. Part of owning and embodying our power is by owning the energy we create and transmit to the outside world (and to ourselves). By taking responsibility for the energy we bring, we are acknowledging the power we have, while consciously creating the lives and futures we want. We are not mere victims of life's circumstances. We are powerful agents of our own lives. We create and attract what we “put out there”. Don't you think it's time we owned the energy we put out into the world? Well, let's do this! There's a whirlwind of chaos going on out there and it can be so easy to get swept away into it. It's time that we prioritize our own peace. It's time that we purposefully sought out peace for yourselves. It's time that we *created* more peace in our lives. And there are so many ways to do it! What brings you peace? What allows you to slow down and catch your breath? What nourishes you and helps you feel grounded and whole? We talk about all this and much more in this episode! I'm back from summer holidays and ready to give you your podcast dose of encouragement, support and sisterly love. If you are feeling a little lost lately, you are NOT alone. And I'm here to remind you that you are strong and powerful, even when you feel lost. PLUS, feeling lost is part of our heroine's journey. Or as Christina Feldman explains in her fantastic book, “The Quest of the Warrior Woman”, a “season of discontent” is part of our warrior process. What a week, right? What year is this even? How do I process all that's happening in the world? We cover that and much more in our latest episode. There are plenty of reasons to become radicalized - to hold views in opposition to the current political, social, or religious status quo. We have SO many systems that are not working for us. It's time we challenge these systems by speaking up - using our voices AND our actions. It's time we practise radical self-acceptance, radical self-love, radical compassion and radical self-worth. It's time we acknowledge that we've been radicalized and now we are ready for the next steps. Come on ladies, let's get in formation. And dayum, we need to stop the roll back on human rights, including women's personhood and sovereignty. It's time for a little healing, letting go and all that other good stuff. In this episode we talk about why women find it so hard to forgive themselves and why we punish ourselves for past perceived mistakes. We even finish the episode with a tiny, easy exercise in realtime to help you forgive yourself a little more. You and your bright future deserve it. If Mothers Ran the World There Would Be No War In this episode designed to empower and encourage, Kelly talks about what it would mean if mothers ran the world. We look at cultures where women and mothers traditionally lead and talk about how after making, growing and keeping alive another human, you are less likely to send a child to war. We talk about the power of women to “break the script” of the status quo and how it's time that people with pro-social, pro-future, pro-collective good perspectives were catapulted into decision-making and leadership positions. Quotes mentioned in the episode: “I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet, there would be no more wars.” - E. M. Forster I do honestly think that if women were running the world there would be more investment in peace, because basically as women we do not want to see our children killed. Maybe I am completely idealistic, but until we see women in equal positions of power in the world, I just think that we are doomed.” - Meryl Streep “If men cannot get along without the shedding of blood and putting the knife to the throat of a brother, let them no longer set themselves up as guides and rulers but confess their self-evident insufficiency and turn the management of affairs over to the mothers who will temper their justice with love and enthrone mercy on the highways.” - Mary Elizabeth Lease For daily inspiration and motivation follow Strong Women Co on facebook and Instagram: www.facebook.com/StrongWomenCo www.instagram.com/strongwomenco To join our FREE online Tribe: www.facebook.com/groups/SWCTribe Check out our website for our programs and kits: https://strongwomenco.com Featured song: “In These Arms, A Prayer for All Beings” by Jennifer Berezan and Friends https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQDtK4YeZng

I was so glad to chat with Elaine Dunphy about the revolution of joy and the beauty of connecting to our bodies. Elaine teaches classes of beautiful moving meditations called NIA. And who couldn't use more tools to add joy, health and happiness to our lives? PLUS, I have great news that she's giving us all a FREE CLASS in the Strong Women Co Tribe! Let's make more joy in our lives! As Elaine explains it, “As adults we are somehow of the belief that there is no time for bringing out our inner child to play anymore - Nia is an outlet to let that happen. Nia invites you to step away from your everyday schedule and take one hour just for you to dance and move your body. The neat part is that if you have two left feet, Nia is a perfect class for you - this is about moving your body YOUR way. The result is stress free movement of your body done to uplifting music that leaves you feeling relaxed and refreshed. Elaine's personal mantra is JOY – finding it in her life and sharing it with others and creating joy through movement sharing the Nia Philosophy with her students.” It's time we focused on ourselves a little more. In this episode, we talk a little about the year that was 2021 and then dive into the REAL reason most of us have any nice feelings or memories of Christmas: strong women. It's women who organize the festive events, synchronize schedules, buy the majority of thoughtful presents and bake almost all the cookies. Women make Christmas. Really, women make the nicest parts of life. So, this time of year celebrate yourself and all the women in your life that make life BETTER! And we are back! Woohoo! In this episode we talk about how women can set themselves up to win so that they can save (and be!) themselves! There's a lie we've been told: it's that we need something or someone outside of ourselves to save us. No, ma'am. The ONLY one that can save you, heal you and protect you is YOU. There's a freedom and power that comes from realizing that you have everything you will ever need inside you. So, be your own hero, set yourself up to win. Be that princess who saves herself! Be the Queen who reigns confidently over her queendom. You are a GROWN WOMAN, you can do WHATEVER you want! The word “strong” used to be exclusively associated with physical strength but recently we've begun to realize that true strength is of the emotional and psychological variety. In this episode I walk you through some easy tools to better understand your own strength and resilience. I also offer theories as to why women, as a group, are so very strong. It's important to know your own strength and be reminded of your own power. Recognizing that you are a Strong Woman is still a revolutionary act in a world that teaches you to hide your strength. In this episode we talk with the famous + talented author + trailblazer, Patricia Lynn Reilly about women-affirming actions, words and realities. We talk about reclaiming our lives, images and bodies as our own while dismantling the patriarchy, one revolutionary act at a time. Patricia Lynn brings her beautiful work to us to highlight the power of personal sovereignty in a society that pressures us to look perpetually young while ignoring (silencing?) the challenges and triumphs of our years. How is it that “aging naturally” is still revolutionary for women while men gain status and power as they age? Strong women, it is time we thought about aging differently. It's time we honoured and celebrated the accumulation of our years and wisdom! Patricia Lynn Reilly, M.Div.. When we hear other women's journeys of healing it helps us make sense of our own. In my most honest and raw podcast yet I talk about a big part of my own healing journey and where I am with it now. Healing isn't something you do just once and it's done. Healing takes time to unfold. And the layers, oh my the non-linear layers. Sometimes things come up in your healing journey that you thought were over, that you thought were healed. But then they pop back up begging for further light, healing and love. It's important to acknowledge that you haven't gone backwards. And it's ok to be re-triggered sometimes. Why? Because: Healing is NOT linear or simple or straightforward or even obvious. To be honest, I felt VERY vulnerable as I recorded this episode. I had to keep reminding myself that storytelling is healing. That the personal is political. And that making (and sharing) this podcast episode is part of my own healing journey. So, if you are listening to this show it means I put on my “big girl” pants and decided that my story was worth telling. Walk the walk, right? Not just talk the talk. Let's do this! Let's normalize sharing our healing journeys. Let's refuse the isolation silos that the patriarchy puts us in. Let's support each other in our healing journeys. Thanks for bearing witness to part of my healing story. I'd love to hear yours! Listening to one another's experiences is one of the most curative things we can do. No woman is an island. Happy Pride! One is not born, but rather becomes a woman. “One is not born, but rather becomes a woman” is a quote by Simone de Beauvoir in her 1949 book, in which she discusses the treatment of women throughout history. This quote is a great reminder that becoming a woman is a process for us all, including our trans sisters. In this episode I talk with Rhea Rollmann, the award-winning journalist, writer and radio producer/podcaster based in Newfoundland, Canada. Rhea is a brilliant and thoughtful woman who shares part of her story of transition, “coming out” and the beauty of rediscovering oneself. We talk about gender identity, normalizing the inevitability of individual transformation and the freedom of being who you truly are. We also speak about the importance of Pride and how we can prioritize “joy” in our lives (and our social activism). To Rhea: A special thank you to you for sharing your experiences and wisdom with us. And as my station Program Manager, without you, the Strong Women Power (half) Hour would NOT be where it is today. There's a common theme that keeps coming up lately. Women keep saying, “I just want to feel like myself again.” These last 16+ months have left many of us aching for us to just “feel like ourselves”, whatever that may be. We remember a version of ourselves that wasn't so depleted and wary from dealing with the pandemic. Many of us remember a version of ourselves that wasn't so burnt out and had more energy. It makes sense that we long for that sense of self as many of us are beginning to think about what “life after the pandemic” may look like. We've changed and grown. Every try, every ounce of effort counts in this game called life. Trying MATTERS. And in current times when we may be feeling “effort fatigue” due to all the extra energy, work and time even simple tasks take, it’s nice to be reminded that all the effort, energy and TRYING matters. It’s accumulative and it’s the only way anything ever gets done, really. Research-wise, effort matters even more than ability or talent! Your perseverance matters. Your grit matters. Showing up matters. Make sure to celebrate your endurance and resilience. You deserve it. We are going through one of the weirdest times in history. Let’s focus on our “wins” and honour our efforts thus far. There’s a lie that is told and repeated to keep us small and it is that we are somehow not enough. It’s the underlying belief rotted in so much negative thinking, sadness and even illness. But we are here to tell you (or remind you, because we all need reminding sometimes) that you are ABSOLUTELY enough. And that trying your best is, of course, enough. And maybe with our little visual meditation you may feel it in your bones a little more. Knowing that you are enough is peace. And you deserve peace. This is the time for new beginnings. We’ve faced so many endings in the last year but like the ancient trilogy of the Goddess teaches us, there is birth, death and rebirth. And this is REBIRTH time. There is hope! There is light at the end of this tunnel! Some of us thrive in times of change and others struggle with finding our footing amid the “newness” of things. Whatever camp you are in, our host Kelly gives you five ways to turn endings into new beginnings with minimal pain and maximum joy. Vive la révolution! Remember: You are strong and capable. You are growing and healing. We are birthing a whole new world, together. And we were made for these times. What we all need right now is to be extra kind and gentle with ourselves. It’s been a long, strange and confusing year. It can be tempting to critique ourselves or to try to rush back to some kind of “normal” but what we really need is patience, encouragement and support. The good news? In *this* story, the princess saves HERSELF. But to do that she must be nice to herself. She must listen to herself. And she must value her own voice and needs. It’s time to turn up the self-compassion and increase the positive self-talk. It’s time to be nice to yourself. You got this! You are here. You are whole. You are a strong woman. We all know these are trying times but there are things we can do to get grounded and clarify the meaningful stuff while letting the less important things fall away. We can bring those treasured joys to the forefront of our mind and day. As Trooper taught us, the sun can’t shine everyday but we are here for a good time. And hopefully a long time, too! Wow, we have normalized so much hard stuff in the last year. And if you’ve been feeling pressure to be OK, despite the chaos and change swirling around, you are NOT alone. In this pod and radio show we encourage and support our listeners to feel and be whatever they are right now. It’s powerful and healing to be honest with ourselves as we face these times of massive uncertainty and ongoing stress. It’s wonderful to accept yourself for where you are and your feelings for what they are. Your future self is thanking you for all the hard stuff you are going through right now. Give yourself some love AND a pat on the back. You are feeling and healing the whole world as you do the work on yourself. Thank you for all you do and are doing to make it through. And sometimes simply existing is ENOUGH. Our featured song from Sinéad O'Connor will remind you that you have a healing room inside of you. What a relief, right? Living in hope is ALWAYS better than living in fear. And despite the rocky start to the year, most of us are SO ready for more optimism and faith right now. There’s a shift occurring. And even if the last year has caused us to be extra cautious, there is a growing desire to do better and be better. But what shall be? The question can be as paralyzing as it is wondrous. However, if we approach it with hope and confidence in our hearts, if we remember how truly powerful and resilient we are (individually and collectively), then we can create the better world that is aching to be born. We are part of the solution. We shall overcome. Reminder: We were made for these times. We made it! We are going to survive 2020 and live to tell about it! This time of year is usually meant to be slower and more reflective as we celebrate life and all we’ve learned but *this year* there’s even more to process that usual. We all need to take some time to digest and absorb what this year has been, what we’ve experienced, what it has felt like and what it all means to us. Individually and collectively we’ve all learned and grown A LOT. Taking time to integrate that knowledge and lived experience is helpful and wise. And, of course, we can’t forget to celebrate all the good stuff, too. Rest, reflect and rejoice. We are stronger and more aware than ever! Happiest holidays to our wonderful listeners! One of the best ways you can help yourself in times of stress and uncertainty (like 2020!) is to focus on what you *can* control, instead of what you can’t. People of all ages are burning out from the intensity and strain of this year. Mental health issues are on the rise everywhere. But there is good news: You have the power to focus (or refocus) your attention. YOU say what gets your time and energy. And in this episode Kelly offers up some support and helpful tips on how to focus on the things that are in the locus of your control and how to be choosy with what gets your precious time, energy and attention. You are much more powerful than you realize. Make good choices for yourself and you’ll be fine. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We are going to survive this year! Wow. This year has been one wild ride. Collectively we have each been on our own journeys of facing our deepest fears (including the unknown) and we are still HERE. In this episode Kelly talks about the realities of 2020 through the lenses of the creation/destruction Goddesses Kali and Pelé while acknowledging how anxiety and depression creeps in at times of uncertainty and exhaustion. Kelly encourages you to ask for help and to give your past (and present) self some love for surviving this whole thing thus far. No matter what, we need to create a livable life for ourselves. And even amid the chaos, we CAN create a livable life. There will always be stressors and distractions but we DESERVE a livable life with joy, rest, creativity and connectivity. Start with what you have control over (and let go of the things you don’t). You deserve all the good things. You deserve happiness and peace. So make *that* life for yourself as best you can. Covid realities have intensified our stresses, making it all that much more important to focus on the good things we have and increasing the joy whenever possible. Start small. We are in a time for transformation and change, individually and collectively. We are refusing to accept racial injustices anymore. We are opening our eyes to the systems that no longer serve us. We are angry, exhausted and determined to create a better world. We are evolving. Relationships are ending and the truth is bubbling up. It is time for us to say ENOUGH to the injustices, police brutality and violence. It is time for us to LISTEN to the experiences of our black and brown sisters and brothers. It is time to eradicate racism for the archaic, cruel, unjust underlying, all-encompassing system that it is. We can do it. We must do it. We are DOING it. Let’s keep going!
