The P-47 Thunderbolt is considered one of the most important fighter-bombers used by Allied Forces in World War II. Thunderbolts flew over half a million missions and are renowned by pilots for their durability and reliability. Over one-third of all Thunderbolts were built at the Republic Aviation plant in Evansville. Notably, nearly half of the plant's employees were women. Known as “Raiderettes,” they worked alongside male workers and boasted a variety of jobs including on the assembly lines, in the administrative offices, and even as test pilots. Many of the women were “two-job workers,” balancing 14-hour shifts at Republic with raising children while their partners fought overseas. Our new blog post examines the lived experiences of the Raiderettes and how they navigated being women workers in a “man's” world, pushing against and often breaking the glass ceiling in the process. This episode was written by Kelsey Green, produced by Jill Weiss Simins, and performed by Justin Clark.

The Year of 40 - Making Big MovesThis is my "year of 40"! What does that mean? I've decided to invest in myself in BIG ways ($, self-love, believing in me). I had to ask myself if now isn't the time, when would it be? After restless nights of sleep, I realized that now is perfect - it.'s time! It's time to invest in me, jump all in and accomplish my dreams. Investing in yourself can be scary - especially when your plan has a price tag and long-term commitment. You might be wrestling with thoughts of how I can spend that much on myself, or can I succeed? Or maybe, am I good enough? There will always be challenges in new and exciting things. It's when you've decided to believe in yourself, give yourself a boost of self-love, and take that leap that MAGIC happens!
Alicia brings a multicultural spirit and curiosity to her work and thinking, having been born in Argentina to European Jewish parents, having Spanish daughters, and now living in Spain. In this podcast, Alicia discusses her reflections on a lifetime of experience and work, much of which focuses on women and leadership. She highlights the importance of recognizing age and generational differences, which are often marginalized when we talk of women's issues as if they are universal. Alicia's research identifies how different age groups have different relationships to work and life, and these must be accounted for. Alicia also highlights how sibling relationships are often left out of our sense-making of workplace dynamics. Yet our sibling relations so often get re-enacted unconsciously at work with our peers and teams, and how we react to our bosses/managers. Alicia has lived a rich life, believing that living in precarious contexts not only produces hardship and anxiety but can also stimulate imagination and innovation, as it has done in her own life. Alicia's insights are rich: enjoy this podcast! Bio Alicia E. Kaufmann holds a doctorate degree in Sociology from Paris and Madrid. She has taught at Instituto de Empresa management school and was a Fulbright scholar twice, once at Yale University in organizational behaviour and the other on leadership. Previously a tenure profesor at Alcalá de Henares University. She is a member of ISPSO (International Society of Psychoanalysis of Organizations) and OPUS (Organization for Promoting Understanding of Society) in London, as well as ICF (International Coaching Federation). Her multicultural background (European parents, born in Argentina, with Spanish children) has opened up a range of interests and curiosity for life that has led her to explore different paths. In 1984, she was part of the executive team of the first Hospital Management School in Madrid. She worked as a facilitator for Stephen Covey, author of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" (USA). She has written 28 books, including "Women in Management and Life Cycle (London Palgrave McMillan, 2008), "Change Female Identities" (London Palgrave McMillan, 2012), and "Woman Power and Money: Build Your Puzzle of Success" (editor Madrid, Medialuna, 2016). Today's How-to-Buy-a-Homie interview is with Joelle, a single woman who bought a house on her own. Accomplishing this feat was no easy task, but hard work and dedication led her to her first house in Florida! Now, she has the keys to her first house instead of relying on the unsteady rent market. From the finances to the emotional aspect of homeownership, David sits down with Joelle to get all the details about the home buying process. Here are some topics from today's discussion: Episode Highlights: [01:32] Don't Believe the Unaffordability Myths Once the pandemic forced everyone to work from home, Joelle knew it was time to find a place with more space. When she started looking, she was overwhelmed by the prices of homes in her area at first. But, after doing the math, she knew that, although the monthly mortgage payment was higher than her rent, she knew she was paying on a long-term investment - something that was truly hers. [24:59] You Get What You Pay For When Joelle was looking for a home, there were a lot of things to look out for. Sometimes a home price might seem outrageous at first, until you discover that there are a variety of factors that will affect it from the quality of the neighborhood's HOA to the flood zone designation. Her unicorn realtor was able to help her navigate all these waters until they found the right home for her. [34:05] Taxes Make a Difference Two things Joelle wasn't expecting was the insurance and taxes that come with buying a home. While she had spent a lot of time worrying over the mortgage, learning about the taxes and homeowner's insurance took her by surprise. Learning about your state's requirements will also help better prepare first-time home buyers.

In this episode, I discuss the latest updates on my journey toward Jaw Surgery. I share what step we are on and where we are headed next. Today is my husband's birthday and he is given a special shout-out, as well as updates on Baby Liam and how we are only 79 days until his due date. It seems so far away but I am learning that it is going by fast. The surgery discussed is used to correct a severe malocclusion (the teeth of the upper jaw or maxilla do not align appropriately with the teeth of the lower jaw or mandible) from a misaligned jaw is called orthognathic surgery. This includes procedures to move the upper jaw or maxilla forward, backward, or even widen it. It also includes procedures to move the lower jaw or mandible rotationally to correct asymmetry, forward or backward. Orthognathic surgery is usually completed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment or braces.

There were so many questions I am so thankful Paula allowed me to ask about her personal experience, from marriage, parenthood, religion, love and identity. Wow. what an insight...
