Today on Davisville we talk with two of the five people who recently wrote “A Long-Term Pragmatic Plan for a Livable and Sustainable Davis.” Don't let the dry title dissuade you — the article is clear, light on jargon, usefully specific, and all about Davis. Their ideas include developing denser homes along transit corridors in Davis, including along Anderson Road (pictured), over several decades. Alex Achimore, an architect and urban planner, and Richard McCann, an environmental policy consultant, talk about the ideas, methods and reasons behind their approach on today's program, including what they mean by density — think more along the lines of townhomes, duplexes and stacked flats, not apartment towers.

Vienna is calling the global real estate industry to the 76th FIABCI World Congress from June 8 to 12, 2026, in Vienna, Austria.Experience an exceptional edition of the FIABCI World Real Estate Congress – for the first time in 36 years, it is being held again in Vienna. We expect up to 1,000 professionals from around the world for a unique gathering at the intersection of business, innovation, and culture:https://www.worldcongress2026.com/This time, we interviewed Alan Webber, co-founder of Fast Company and former mayor of Santa Fe (2018–2025), about how family values, education, and mentors shaped his path from early city-government work in Portland and federal transportation service to Harvard Business School and Harvard Business Review. Alan Webber discusses globalization and national competitiveness, the creation and rapid growth of Fast Company as “edutainment” focused on innovation and the future of work, and the leadership challenges of scaling and letting go. He emphasizes gratitude, respect, proportion, and purpose, contrasts entrepreneurial and political impact, and argues that real estate and public policy must work together to build inclusive, livable communities, with affordable housing addressed through both increased supply and livable wages.00:00 Welcome to Vienna00:38 Meet Alan Webber02:34 Early Life Lessons04:19 Into Public Service07:11 Government and Transport08:31 Harvard and Publishing10:05 Globalization and Industry14:29 Staying Competitive Today18:48 Fast Company Origins24:24 Building Success Factors29:57 Managing Growth Leadership32:44 Humor as Culture34:12 Letting Go After Exit37:46 Rules of Thumb Lessons39:11 Four Compass Points42:04 Entrepreneur vs Politician44:30 Building Community Place49:20 Affordable Housing Playbook56:25 Holistic Real Estate View01:00:23 Global Leadership Call01:04:06 Vienna Congress OutroLearn more about Alan Webber:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Webberhttps://www.thelegacylab.com/alan-webberhttps://www.amazon.com/Rules-Thumb-Productive-Inspired-Turbulent-ebook/dp/B0026772S8?ref_=ast_author_dp&th=1&psc=1#customerReviews
There's a reason people write poetry about trees and not speed bumps. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Geoffrey Donovan — forest economist, 23-year USDA Forest Service researcher, and founder of Ash and Elm Consulting — about why the health benefits of urban trees dwarf every other benefit we talk about, and why most people still don't believe it. We get into the emerald ash borer study that produced the headline "when trees die, people die," the Portland research showing the inverse — tree planting linked to decreased cardiovascular mortality — and why the strongest evidence sits at both ends of life: babies born heavier when mothers live near tree canopy, and people living longer in greener neighborhoods. We also talk about biodiversity and immune development, including Geof's studies linking genus-level plant diversity to lower rates of childhood asthma and leukemia, why peak exposure to grayness may be a risk factor for ADHD, and what a pregnant woman can actually do with all of this research. The conversation ends where I think the field needs to go: science-based storytelling, why Geof reads Seamus Heaney to audiences after the graphs, and why trees don't make cities more livable — they make them survivable.Find Geof and Ash and Elm Consulting at ashelmconsulting.com.

The 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly known as COP30, began on Nov. 10 in Belém, Brazil, on the edge of the Amazon rainforest. This year's COP conference has more fossil fuel lobbyists in attendance than any previous conference, but it has also drawn the biggest delegation of Indigenous peoples from around the world—each group representing competing visions for addressing the climate crisis. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Dharna Noor, fossil fuels and climate reporter at Guardian US, about what actions are and are not being taken at COP30, and what the results of this year's climate summit will mean for humanity's future on a rapidly heating Earth.Additional links/info:Dharna Noor, Guardian US, “‘Without our expertise, mistakes get made': The Cop30 campaign to give workers a voice”Dharna Noor & Jonathan Watts, Guardian US, “Thousands hit streets of Belém to call for action during crucial Cop30 summit”Credits:Studio Production / Post-Production: David HebdenBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-real-news-podcast--2952221/support.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Follow us on:Bluesky: @therealnews.comFacebook: The Real News NetworkTwitter: @TheRealNewsYouTube: @therealnewsInstagram: @therealnewsnetworkBecome a member and join the Supporters Club for The Real News Podcast today!

By 2030, adults over 65 will outnumber children in the U.S., yet only one percent of homes meet basic accessibility standards. What does that mean for the future of aging in our communities? In this episode, AARP's Shannon Guzman explains why most neighborhoods weren't built with aging in mind and how we can change that. We explore the AARP Livability Index, a tool that measures how communities support aging well through housing, transportation, health, and more. From policy shifts to everyday improvements, this conversation offers a roadmap for building communities where people of all ages can thrive.

Questions about whether Christian business owners should provide a livable wage, whether doing a corporate sponsorship that promotes one's business contradicts Matthew 6:3, and whether the parable of the rich fool refutes America's approach to retirement. Do Christian business owners have a moral responsibility to provide a livable wage? Would doing a corporate sponsorship with an organization we have been working with and financially supporting contradict Jesus' words in Matthew 6:3 about giving in secret since part of the motivation would be to promote our business? Is the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12:13–21 a direct refutation of America's approach to retirement?

People are more productive than ever before and YET our wages are not reflecting the growth in labor. Our wages have been stolen by the wealth hoarders and redistributed to shareholders at the expense of our dignity. We need to ensure their propaganda about laziness doesn't continue to influence the people around us. The robber barons are worse than ever, but at least we're FINALLY talking about their crimes. From the moment he became mayor of New York City in 1966, John Lindsay faced a city in turmoil when subway workers walked off the job and went on strike for 12 days. In many ways, it never got any easier for Lindsay, who ran the city in a time of national upheaval. In part two of a three-part podcast series by Spectrum News NY1, Errol Louis explores John Lindsay's chaotic first term, in which the mayor tried to continue pushing forward, combating a string of labor disputes while attempting to create a more livable city. Are we alone in the universe? Alien Earths author Lisa Kaltenegger joins us to discuss new discoveries in humanity's hunt for extraterrestrial life. What We Discuss with Lisa Kaltenegger: The universe contains billions of stars and galaxies, with an estimated one out of five stars having a planet that could be similar to Earth in terms of potential habitability. Scientists use various methods to detect exoplanets, including observing changes in starlight and analyzing the light spectrum of planets to detect signs of life-sustaining elements like oxygen and methane. The search for extraterrestrial life involves looking for planets in the "habitable zone" or "Goldilocks zone" around stars, where conditions might allow for liquid water on the surface. The observable universe is limited by the speed of light and the age of the universe (approximately 13.7 billion years), meaning we can only see as far as light has had time to travel since the Big Bang. Anyone can contribute to space exploration and scientific discovery by staying curious, learning about new discoveries, and supporting science education. Even simple actions like looking up at the night sky and wondering about our place in the universe can inspire a lifelong passion for science and exploration. And much more...
