Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 108 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"The Griot, The Artist, and the Educator." In this week's episode, I finally give my initial thoughts around Ryan Coogler's film "Sinners." For me, the film was a lesson in all things African cosmology including African futurism, Nommo (or the power of the spoken word), and Diaspora consciousness. Needless to say it was EVERYTHING I wanted it to be and some of what I couldn't have even imagined. I'll share who I think the real griot of the film was (please let me know if you agree!). I'll also share with you my feelings as a Humphries Era Rattler and the recent Board of Trustees election of Marva Johnson as the 13th President Elect of FAMU. And, if you're really wanting to unpack thei deas around Black history, Black spirituality, and Black culture, please consider being a guest on the podcast. Send me an email at drtip@tellemtiptoldyou.com. I'm a life coach helping folks reach holistic success over here while being your FAVORITE HBCU Prof! After you tune in, let me know what you think of this episode by leaving me a 5-star review. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 108 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Culture Wars and Politics: What We Must Do to be Free” Since Black folks arrived in the U.S., we have been under a cultural attack that requires our constant awareness and strategy. What we need to do, particularly in this election cycle, is be aware of how history informs the present. Our lessons from the past can help us generate strategy if we are enlightened enough to seek answers from it. For far too long, we have failed to understand the role that culture plays in our continued oppression. I hope that this episode helps us think more deeply about that. If you are looking for the PBS documentary I referenced, you can find it here: In the White Man's Image. The book, Education for Extinction is here. As always, you can follow me on social media and/or YouTube (see below). I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 107 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Sankofa: The Art of Reclamation” What do The Book of Clarence, Cowboy Carter, and the Black Arts Movement have in common? In this episode, I talk about the role of art (and Black literacy) in multi-layered communication. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 106 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"HBCUs, Public School Vouchers, and Opportunity Districts: Oh My!” Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think something nefarious is afoot and I just want us to be watchful and prepared. The bottom line is that I think we need to specifically be thinking about institution building, maintenance, and protection when it comes to education in general, but our young people specifically. I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. And, if you're really wanting to unpack the ideas around Black history, spirituality, or culture, please consider being a guest on the podcast. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 105 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Woman's Work and Other Reasons to Give Praise.” This week is special, I just wanted to share some poetry with you in honor of Women's History Month. This week's poems come from Gwendolyn A. Mitchell and really share important ideas—especially for Women's History. The reason that this episode is an abbreviated one is because I am getting ready for a banger next week! Next Sunday, I want to share some news about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that I think we, as a community, need to give our intentions to. In fact, we need to specifically be thinking about institution building, maintenance, and protection. I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 104 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Whose Life Story Are You Writing?” What do the films American Fiction, One Drop: The Bob Marley Story and Mea Culpa have in common? In this episode I want to share with you my ideas about how these three films in Black culture are a model for what more of us need to be thinking about. Let me give you a hint about this week's episode. We are either authors of our own life's story, or we are a character in someone else's version. This week, I want you to think about the story you're telling and why. I also want you to think deeply about who benefits when you don't control your own narrative. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 103 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"A Fan of Fani.” What do Usher Raymond's half-time show have in common with Beyonce's recent music release and DA Fani Willis' time on the stand? In this episode I want to share with you my ideas about how these three events in Black culture are a model for what more of us need to be doing. Did you catch all of the symbolism in Usher's performance? How do you feel about the Queen's country music? Did you argue with people about whether or not Willis should have dated someone with whom she is working? Don't worry, let's unpack these ideas together. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 102 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Stop Making Stupid People Famous.” This week, I want to open with a James Baldwin quote that essentially asks us to reflect on what America is doing to us. That reflection is just what this episode of the podcast is about. If you mindlessly scroll social media as I sometimes (okay, okay OFTEN) do, you've probably seen some of the folks I talk about this week. I'd love to hear what you think about their performances. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 101 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Tyrese, Really?” This week, I fought hard not to hit a full on rant. If you haven't heard, Tyrese helped set the tone for Black History Month 2024 by publishing wishing he was born Latinx. (Now, don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with being Latinx, the problem is in not celebrating who you are.) In this episode I share with you a few quotes by two of my favorite scholars: Drs. Carter G. Woodson and John Henrik Clarke. I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 99 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Rhetoric, Reality, and the Need for Community.” This week, I start with a special message about my struggles with procrastination and how that almost shaped this episode. Between Dr. Claudine Gay's resignation, Dr. Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey's untimely death, and Florida's permanent ban of DEI on college campuses, this year has already shown itself to be one for which we must be prepared. Unfortunately, at the same time we need to have our best thinkers reasoning through strategies for collective Black freedom and wellness, we are offering seeing a general disregard for intellectualism. For Black folks in particular, this is a dangerous road and we must not travel it alone. I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. My time on it in this episode feels a bit rushed, but I'll get to it next week. When speaking about Taraji P. Henson, I misspoke and said her comments were about “higher education.” I actually meant “Hollywood.” Finally, I am no expert on Elon Musk and the source of his money has been up for discussion, but you can read more about his family here. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 98 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Colonialism, Scarcity, and Tools for Liberation.” The world is a dumpster fire right now. If you are a person that believes in humanity, social justice, and equity life has been pretty rough lately. In this episode, I want to share with you how this season has plagued my joy and left me in a valley. However, I also want to share that by their very definition, valleys always have a way out. I'll be honest. Things have been challenging for me. In fact, I'd left behind some of the tools I've used in the past to bring me back to center. But things are getting better and I want to share with you the tools I'm using to claw my way out of my own foolishness. In this episode, I'll remind you of the power of prayer, benefits of meditation, importance of maroonage (read more here), and more. I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 97 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Alien Self, Anti-Self, and MisEducation.” We're in a whole mess with these Florida Education moves aren't we? In this episode, we discuss the recent release of new middle and high school standards in the State of Florida. Without an understanding of how history for Black folks has always been tied to liberation or oppression in the US, we may miss how deep this really is. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 96 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Cornel is Running for What?!” Honey, I can't believe that we have to talk about Brotha Cornel and a presidential bid all in the same breath. I'm disgusted; if you want to know why, tune into this episode and hear me out. I'll be honest. This is probably not my best podcast. Quite frankly, I'm too bothered for it to be. In this episode, I'll share my thoughts about West's campaign and compare it to some things I've been watching over the last few years. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 95 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Living is an Artform.” Last week, I found out that my ex of seven years transitioned. Needless to say, it had a huge impact on my productivity and on my emotions. In this episode, I continue my conversation about mental health and how I'm managing to navigate my feelings. Now, don't get me wrong, my feelings around his passing that have affected me the most, are those linked to the awareness of my own mortality. His death reminded me that we cannot afford to procrastinate on the things that bring us joy and the lead us to our greatest successes. In this episode of the podcast, I also reflect on Angie Martinez's recent interview with Janelle Monae. If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you head on over to watch it. Listen, unless you've not been paying attention you already know about growing censorship in US public schools. Thanks for tuning into Episode 93 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Let's Stay on Code.” This week, I had a lot to get off of my chest regarding that coach's behavior around our beloved HBCUs (sounds a lot like the last episode, huh?). Welp, as long as we put up with the cult of celebrity and don't hold one another to code, I'll keep making these. Listen, I'm going to commit to a once a month upload series for the podcast. I'll be talking a bit less about the specifics of pop culture, and more on helping pull our attention from the micro to the larger system we need to be watching. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 92 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"He Ain't SWAC.” This week, I had a lot to get off of my chest regarding that coach's behavior around our beloved HBCUs. You can go ahead an tellemtiptold you that! Anywhoo, I realized that I could fit everything I wanted to cover in just one episode, so consider this part one of my rant. I'll give you the rest next week. What I had to get off my chest first, was just how bothered I am around the treatment of our students and how many of us seeming have our souls up for sale. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called materialism one of the three evils that we must face. I think his words are especially important in this conversation. It also was a wakeup call for your girl. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 91 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"I Ain't Your Comfort.” This week, I want to tell you why I've been missing and touch on recent news and events. I've missed unpacking Black cultural and political ideas with you! If you're on my email list, watch out for an email that asks for the best time and day for us to begin our Instagram Lives again. The title of this episode is informed, in part, by Howling Wolf's song “Built for Comfort.” Now, I don't mind being built for comfort for people in my community, but I don't owe my oppressors NOTHING. In other words, when a colonizer dies I do not owe them my respect nor their admirers my comfort. I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. And, if you're really wanting to unpack the ideas around politics, voting, or culture, please consider being a guest on the podcast. Send me an email at drtip@tellemtiptoldyou.com. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 89 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"The Problem with Some Black Christians.” Admittedly, this episode will probably bother you a little, but I'm okay with that. As a community, we're really going to have to address our tendencies to be divided on issues where there should be no division..This is a thinking episode. I really want us to dig into our visceral actions to the “thing,” and what we're going to do in the face of the “thing.” As we contemplate those things, here are the websites I referenced: www.teachingintheurbansouth.com www.tellemtiptoldyou.com www.pogueeducationalconsulting.com I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. On the macro- and micro-levels, we fall victim to someone else's agenda when we seek their validation and valuation. In this episode, I share why as long as we seek to be validated by someone else, we'll fail to witness the genius of our people. I'll share how the terror attacks in Buffalo and Texas reveal anti-Black and anti-Latine violence as well as how the words of politicians reveal their own anti-people sentiments. I'll even talk about Juneteenth and its similarity to Memorial Day as I argue that external validation has cost us with these holidays, too. I'd love to here your perspectives on these ideas. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 88 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"The Hypocrisy Problem (or The Slap We Won't Discuss.” Admittedly, this episode is all over the place—mostly because I have strong emotions about this. As a community, we're really going to have to go after this “respectability politics” thing. In the aftermath of the thing we will not mention, I saw many examples of respectability politics play out, and I'm not sure all of us were aware when we were buying into them. This episode is about those comments, not about the moment. This is a thinking episode. I really want us to dig into our visceral actions to the “thing,” and how we're reacted to other folks' reactions to the “thing.” I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 87 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Stop Expecting Black Deficiency” This episode is personal for me. I can't help but wonder if Ryan Coogler would have had the cops called on him if a Black teller didn't have a preconceived notion of what Black men were or how they were supposed to “behave.” I also talk briefly about the Crown Act which just passed the US House of Representatives, but that was voted against by 189 people! Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 86 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"War at Home and War Abroad” This is a pretty heavy episode. I hope that you find it informative, but also encouraging. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 85 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Not During Black History Month!” This has to have been one of the worst Black History Months as of late. War, economic insecurity, HBCU bomb threats and more. But I'm not here to talk about the macro level stuff (although we should be paying attention to it). Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 84 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Encanto for Black Women.” I have a new movie in my top five! Disney's Encanto is an exceptional story about a young girl learning to celebrate her own unique magic. WARNING: This episode contains spoilers. If you have not yet watched the film, you may want to do it before listening. In this episode, I will share with you my main takeaways from the film. Chief among them is the need to recognize that my magic does not have to manifest like anyone else's (and neither does yours). This episode is made especially for the overachievers among us who feel pressured to identify as our gifts rather than with our gifts. I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 83 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"A Chat with Kristina Hamlett.” In this episode I get to have a conversation with a dear friend and powerful writer: Kristina Hamlett. I met Kristina during a Digital Storytelling workshop at the University of Alabama a few years ago. She's done a lot in the time since then that is more than inspirational. That's why I wanted to share her and her most recent project, She Lives Here, with you. Kristina is an author, blogger, and storyteller that facilitates creative non-fiction writing classes at a re-entry non-profit. The Pandemic has required some adjustments and Hamlett is now creating a poetry reading series with Henrico County Public Library to amplify the voices of local poets. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 82 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"The Thing About Kwanzaa.” Can I tell you how happy I am that we've made it to the end of another year? We get to celebrate our lives, our accomplishments, and our all. This week, there isn't any news to share because I wanted to spend all of my time talking about culture, cultural symbols, and the principles of Kwanzaa. In fact, today is one of my favorite Kwanzaa principles: kujuchagulia (or self determination)! Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 81 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Be You Now.” Listen!!! Can I hit you with a word that Spirit gave me while I'm planning for my 2022 holistic success? Long story short: it's time to go ahead a be who we want to be. No more waiting, babes. Can you believe the prosecutor in the Ethan Crumbly case is catching some heat for filing charges against his parents? In my opinion, this is just evidence of the failure of some folks to take accountability for their actions. And speaking of accountability, did you see Travis Hunter's statement on why he chose Jackson State University? It's a beautiful statement and really sparks some pride in the heart of this HBCU prof! There's a change afoot, and I'm happy to see it. If you don't do anything else now, consider becoming more culturally-centered. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 80 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"You Deserve Fair Compensation.” After covering a few news stories that caught my attention this week, I want to remind you of your worth. Hey ya'll hey! Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 75 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Media Literacy, Discernment, and High Expectations.” In this episode I share some strategies for responsible media intake as well as reveal a revelation I received in a dream/ vision last week. All in all, I think these things are pretty relevant for where most of us find ourselves currently. I didn't mean to nerd out, but sometimes I just can't shake that good old-fashioned J-School background. I was taught how to ingest the news with discernment and I think that's what has helped me shelter myself from deliberate misinformation campaigns. I don't think I'm special, but I do realize how marginalized that kind of training is. To help more of us be more careful, I share with you what I was taught about research, triangulation, and more. I hit on the media thing a bit, but if you're interested in what deregulation has done to traditional news stories here are some pretty good sources: here, here, and here. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 74 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"A New Definition of Family.” A couple of stories in the news made me think more deeply about how abusers often groom their victims so that the victim is less likely to seek prosecution and justice. I think such grooming happens not only by the predator, but also by the seemingly “innocent” folks and practices that continue to silence victims through their own actions and behaviors. In this episode, I tell a bit of my own story and how it has made me reflect on how we define family. Specifically, I propose a new definition of family that I think more of us should be using. I'll also try and point your direction to how we must begin to pay more attention to the growing partisan-politicization of US public school boards. If we truly care about ALL students' rights to learn, we have to begin to be more active in school board advocacy. I'll tell you why. Finally, we have to applaud Zaila Avant-garde for her recent Scripps Spelling Bee win. But, we also can't forget to pay homage to the Black girl once deprived of her victory, Ms. MacNolia Cox. Thanks for tuning into Episode 67 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Every Old Person Ain't Your Elder.” I'm about tired of some of these gate-keeping, respectability folks and I share with you why in this episode. You might have heard me say before that history holds the keys to our tomorrows and our todays. In this episode, I show you how I use history in this way. The reality is our ancestors left messages intentionally for us; it does us well to remember them. I use Anna Julia Cooper's famous quote from her A Voice From the South to drive this episode so I can't wait to hear what you think After you tune in, let me know what you think of this episode by leaving me a 5 star review. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 66 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Finding What You Seek.” When I was a little girl, my grandmother used to tell me that you will always find what you're looking for. This week, the advice hit a bit differently for me and I want to share that with you. We'll also talk (just a little) about this Critical Race Theory mess of a distraction. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 65 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Lessons from Tulsa.” Buckle up; I'm on my soapbox in this one. From instructions on how to learn about and celebrate Juneteenth, to lamentations about how Tulsa is currently being (mis)remembered, I'll share with you my musings about freedom in this current era. Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 63 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"A Tribute to Dark Man X.” I had to make some scheduling adjustments to today’s episode. Originally, today was supposed to be a Midlife Musings episode with Brandon, but instead word about DMX’s death moved me to upload this episode. Shortly after recording, I learned about the lynching of Daunte Wright at the hands of police just around the way from Derek Chauvin’s trial and it all became a bit too much for me. I contemplated scrapping this episode too and trying to get something—anything—up about Wright’s murder. As you can see, I decided against that—not because Wright’s death doesn’t deserve and episode (because it certainly does), but because Black life has to endure even in the face of tragedy. If our work stopped everytime one of us was murdered, we’d get almost nothing done. AND, Earl Simmons (DMX) deserves his tribute. He deserves our attention—perhaps now more than ever. So this episode remains as it was—dedicated to the life and legacy of DMX. We’ll talk about Daunte Wright next week (and we pray there is no further tragedy before that). Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 62 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Classic Love Songs are Good Medicine.” Listen, please do me a favor, if you can find any videos from last night’s Verzuz between Earth, Wind, and Fire and The Isley Brothers, do yourself a favor and go watch! If you weren’t there in real time, you missed a real treat. Soul music was named that for a reason! In this I muse on possible connections between real love songs sung by folks like the Elements and the Isley’s and the kind of clarity it takes to truly practice personal development. Make sure you give that part a close listen and decide for yourself if you’re using classic love songs and they good music they have the potential to be. If we are intentional about what we ingest (including our musical diets), we can be assured that we will have greater control over what we are able to manifest in our lives. I believe that listening to those old love songs can help us get clear about the kinds of relationships we want to manifest, but also the kind of person we want to show up in those relationships as. And, in terms of our own personal development being clear on who we want to be matters a whole lot. Oh and tell me about the new sound effects. Are they working for you? Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 61 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Turning Inward Together.” Listen, please do me a favor, if watching trials like that of Derek Chauvin bring you stress give this episode a listen. I want us to be consciously aware of how those images either add to our well-being or subtract from it. Our holistic health and wellness depends heavily on us being aware of how the things we ingest (including media images and messages) affect us. In addition to some advice I give about not becoming numb to racial violence and police brutality, I also tell you about some small lifestyle changes that have contributed to some pretty big feelings lately. I can’t wait to hear what you think about them. If you’re looking for the Bishop Chronicles podcast, you can find it here. Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 60 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"The Puppetmaster.” Today’s episode will hopefully remind you we need to be consciously aware of the ways we are often manipulated by the media. We’ll spend some time discussing the “model minority” myth and what it has to do with Anti-AAPI racism. (The article I reference by Au and Chang can be found here) Although this show is not a gossip column, we will discuss the scandal revolving around a relatively popular Black Relationship “expert” and what we need to be remembering as we witness the fall out. Once again, our history holds the keys of what we need to move forward. After you tune in, let me know what you think of this episode by leaving me a 5 star review! Please, and thank you (smile). Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 59 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"A Woman’s Worth.” Honey!!! Happy International Women’s Day! Today’s episode of the podcast is all about women and the work they do to make this world a better place. I’ll share one of my favorite stories of the orisa Osun and how it allows us to see the critical nature in divine efficiency and how Osun’s behavior can help inform the strategies used by women who feel overworked and/or invisible. I remind you that it is not Black women’s responsibility to save the world, even if we do so time and time again. I share with you four strategies non-women can take to honor us and four strategies we must take to be well. I’ll end the podcast wishing you a “Decade of No.” Wonder what I mean? Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 58 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Activism as a Life Purpose.” I’ve been thinking long and hard about what I want my mark on this world to be. Some of the reason that I think that I’m here is to be a teacher. But, even in that, I believe my ultimate responsibility is service to community. I’ll do my best to explain to you what this means for me. In this episode I’ll also remind you that you DESERVE to be compensated. Black Luxury is not something to run from. Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 57 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Black Love is Black Liberation.” Honey!!! After a weekend of Black movies, Akoma and Black Love, I’ve got plenty to talk about. In this episode I’ll try my best to sum up my emotions about “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Let me just tell you, it had me all up in my feelings! If there was ever a movie about Black Love, Black History, and Black betrayal, this one is it. It covered love from so many angles that my heart is still full from it! No worries, I won’t give any spoilers. I also give a brief description of the Akoma Adinkra symbol as a guidepost for future discussions (and understandings) about love. Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 56 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Black Luxury and Educational Autonomy.” In this episode I provide some updates regarding our February book club on Keenga-Yamahtta Taylor’s How We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective. Our first book discussion will be held on February 17,2021 at 9:00pm EST. Details will be sent out to the email list. I caught bits and pieces of a social media conversation on Black luxury that I just had to weigh in on. I might sound like I’m contradicting myself a lot in that segment because I think that whatever position one takes on the discussion, deeper reflection is necessary. Give it a listen and let me know what you think! If education is your thing (and it should be!), I want you to become familiar with the American Legislative Exchange Council and watch out to see what it may be up to. Finally, I offer some of my thoughts about Black History Month itself. After you tune in, let me know what you think of this episode by leaving me a 5 star review! Please, and thank you (smile). Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 55 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"2021 is Here—Now What?” In this episode I explore the idea that while 2020 was a year that caused us to see things we’d previously (either) not seen (or tried not to see), 2021 is asking us what we’re now going to do with that vision. I’ll also share with you about my plans for Black History Month and will invite you in on a few things. Hey ya’ll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 54 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Faith to Start the New Year.” Ya’ll this one was fun to record. I got to finally sit down with one of my besties, Brandon Simmons, to do some mid-life musings (you’ll catch that reference once you tune in). Needless to say, over 25 years of friendship ended up in an episode that will take you from thinking about mortality to celebrating your potential and every little thing in between. Also in this episode you’ll here a married man and a not yet married woman talk about fidelity and open relationships so you don’t want to miss this.
