Today I talked to Chikodili Emelumadu about Dazzling (Harry N. Abrams, 2023). Treasure and Ozoemena are young Nigerian girls forced to deal with spirits after losing their fathers. Treasure is forced to beg in the marketplace as her mother lies bedridden and depressed, and a wicked spirit finds her there and tries to make her his wife. He promises to bring her father back to life if she helps him by finding other girls for his friends. Ozoemena's father has disappeared, leaving the family with questions and responsibilities. She learns from her grandmother that she is descended from a wild, ancient beast, the Leopard from an Igbo legend, which gives her terrible dreams and sometimes takes over her body. Touching on Igbo mythology and African folklore, Emelumadu's dual-voiced stories focus on family, traditions, growing up, and the forces that conspire to prevent people from overcoming their grief. Chikodili Emelumadu was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire and raised in Awka, Nigeria. Her work has been shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Awards (2015), the Caine Prize for African Literature (2017 & 2020) and has won a Nommo award (2020 & 2024). In 2019, she emerged winner of the inaugural Curtis Brown First Novel prize for her debut novel, Dazzling. Her short fiction is available in many magazines and anthologies such as Isolation: The Horror Anthology (2022), Screams from the Dark (2022), Experimental Writing: A Writer's Guide and Anthology (2024) and as part of the Royal Literary Fund's Writer's Mosaic. This week, we're reposting two awesome interviews with authors who were just nominated for the Hugo Award. Today's guest is Donald Oghenechovwe Ekpeki, a speculative fiction author from Nigeria, whose story 'O2 Arena' is nominated for both the Hugo and the Nebula. He has been awarded an honorable mention in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest, twice. His short story “The Witching Hour,” won the 2018 Nommo award for best short story by an African. He was longlisted for the 2019 Nommo award and the 2020 British Science Fiction Association award. He was also awarded the 2020 Horror Writers Association diversity grant and was nominated for best novella by the Nebula Awards. I usually don't give you a list of a guest's accomplishments, but in this case it is relevant. We've talked in this podcasts with guests about the way the American and British SF&F world keeps out authors from other countries, about how so much SF&F gets lost by never being noticed in the world, and I guess you know that there is a lot of inherent racism towards Africans. But whatever we know, whatever we assume, Donald shows us in this interview today many of the ways that African writers are cut off from the rest of the world, from self-publishing, from the big publishers, and more. You can find Donald on: Website: odekpeki.com/ Twitter: Twitter.com/@penprince_ Also check out the books he edited that we talked about: 'The Year's Best African Speculative Fiction (2021)' and 'Dominion'. Amadou Hampâté Bâ, quoting his teacher Tierno Bokar, suggest that “writing is one thing and knowledge is another. Writing is the photograph of knowledge but is not knowledge itself” [A. Hampâté Bâ, The Living Tradition, General History of Africa Vol. 1: 166]. According to Hampâté Bâ, “the world's earliest archives or libraires were the brains of men [and I must add women] … The written word is not without thought. The written word without being refined through action and interaction which is articulated through nommo is without power. Without nommo – the African conceptualization of the energy within the spoken word, the power that carries an energy that produces all life and influences everything is the principle upon which the world of meaning is built – power is debased [Nommo, Encyclopedia of African Religion, 2009]. According to Hampâté Bâ, “In African traditions … the spoken word had, beyond its fundamental moral value, a sacred character associated with its divine origin ... an exceptional conductor of magic, grand vector of 'ethereal' forces, it was not to be treated lightly. Contrary to what some may think, African oral tradition is not limited to stories and legends or even to mythological and historical tales, and the ‘griot' – what Bâ calls a wandering minstrel/poet as conceptualized by the French – is far from being its one and only qualified guardian and transmitter. What does all of this point to … for what purpose … and to what ends does this introductory exploration provide our current engagement that you will hear next … how does it connect? The simplicity of the answer is found in understanding its complexity. The simple answer is that it provides a frame within which we can identify and extract the multiple points where spirit and Black resistance converge, whether it is evident as the spark of the Haitian Revolution or found interwoven in the vibrations of John Coltrane's Love Supreme … deeper levels of spirit and Black resistance all always converging. While the complexity is found in our willingness to map its evolution and stand in its genealogy as it is sparked across space and time, evolving itself as it propels African/a peoples to intrinsically seek liberation … It is this space in between space, it is of spirit and Black liberation … one of the many places we can explore and utilize this ancient the praxis of nommo. AWNP's Tasneem Siddiqui recently sat down with Youssef Carter to discuss the interconnectedness of West African Sufi Islam and Black resistance … the embodiment of ancient ways of being articulated in forms of knowledge that 1st make sense of the conditions within which African/a peoples find themselves; and 2nd to struggle against the those conditions when moved out of balance. Dr. Youssef Carter is an Assistant Professor and Kenan Rifai Fellow in Islamic Studies at University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. Dr. Youssef Carter holds BS from North Carolina A&T, an MA from North Carolina Central University and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California-Berkeley and is an expert in Sufism and Islam in West Africa and the United States. His book in progress, “The Vast Oceans: Remembering God and Self on the Mustafawi Sufi Path,” examines the discourses and practices of a transatlantic Sufi spiritual network through detailed ethnographic work. Our show was produced today in solidarity with the native/indigenous, African, and Afro-descended communities at Standing Rock; Venezuela; Cooperation Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi; Brazil; the Avalon Village in Detroit; Colombia; Kenya; Palestine; South Africa; Ghana; Ayiti; and other places who are fighting for the protection of our land for the benefit of all people. People have been reporting inexplicable things flying in the sky for 100s of years. When did the U.S. government start to sit up and pay attention? In the 1940s and early 1950s, UFO investigators seemed genuinely interested in listening to witnesses and finding answers. Then there was a period of denial. The focus was no longer on finding the truth, or leaving cases “unidentified”, but on providing an answer to every sighting, no matter how absurd it sounded. So, where do things stand now? The U.S. government in 2021 finally admitted that it has credible witnesses and physical proof of UFOs or UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomenon) that are “unidentified”. Thanks for the 360 that brought us all the way back to 1947. Now let's take a look back at where it all started and where things changed. There were probably three critical moments that lead to the US government to focus on UFOs. 1. World War II ending and the start of the Cold War with the Soviet Union. 2. Kenneth Arnold's historic 1947 sighting of a UFO. 3. The Roswell incident the summer of 1947. The Fantastically Terrible Character or Creature are the Nommo, the ancestral spirits venerated by the Dogon people of Mali. According to French anthropologists Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen who consistently stayed with the Dogon in the 1920s and 1930s, the tribe was aware of the existence of Sirius B, which is where the Nommo game from....on spaceships. They knew every detail of the white dwarf near Sirius B. They knew the length of its orbit in years, the shape of its orbit and the fact that the white dwarf is quite dense. We also talk to JJ Bola, whose debut novel, "No Place to Call Home" about a Democratic Republic of Congolese family living in London, shows how the main character Jean struggles to fit in at school and home. Young Congolese boy Jean is growing up in a cramped household in London full of TonTons (uncles), aunties, as well as his parents and smart yet snooty younger sister. "No Place to Call Home" looks at how Jean tries to manoeuver though school and family life while trying to belong. The ancient immortal African mystic Doctor Mist was introduced in a cameo on the last page of 1978's The Super Friends #12 before continuing into appearances in The Super Friends #13 & 45-46 before officially forming the Global Guardians in DC Comics Presents #46. We cover these comics to varying degrees, but our primary focus is the supposed true story of "Nommo," appended to tales starring Zatara and Zatanna. Is Dr. Mist one of the most powerful and important figures in the history of the DC Universe, or a sad and lonely fraud? You decide, and you can follow along with our reading of 1988's Secret Origins #27 at The Secret Origins Podcast. This episode's non-paying advertisers:The Longbox CrusadeThe DC Comics Presents ShowKing-Size Comics Giant-Size Fun PodcastThe Pulp 2 Pixel Podcast: Secret Sagas of the Mutliverse Spill Some Blood!!!**across social media only.Tweet host Diabolu Frank directly, or probe @rolledspine as a group.Email DiaboluRolled Spine Podcasts Facebook, which Frank hates and has nothing to do with.If the main DC Bloodlines blog isn't your thing, try the umbrella Rolled Spine Podcasts.

According to the mythology of the Dogons, it is said the indigenous West African tribe of the remote village in Mali, received knowledge 5,200 years ago from the alien god Nommo and the Anunnaki (ancestral spirit deities). Ancient history dating back to 3,200 B.C. reveals the Dogons also had advanced astronomical secret knowledge of the Binary Star System known as Sirius A & Sirius B. Approximately 300,000 Dogon tribe members still occupy the region, south of the Sahara Desert in Africa. Sirius which we now call Sirius A - cannot be seen to the naked eye, was not seen through a telescope until 1862 and was not photographed until 1970. In Ancient Egypt, Sirius was based on their entire religious system; regarded as the most important star connected to spiritual deities. Tune in to hear authentic ceremony music of the Dogon, and the ancient wisdom connecting to Egyptian history, and the mystery of the Sirius Star System. KEYWORDS: Robert Temple, Guggenheim, Laird Scranton, the Nommos, the Anunnaki, Egyptian and Buddhist Cosmology, Dogon Science, Egyptology, Hieroglyphs, Quantum Theory, Super String theory, Binary Star System, Sirius A Sirius B, Mali, West Africa.
