Now longhaired and Kings Road dressed, Brixton copped a gig at the British music weekly Melody Maker.

In this episode we're looking at the blues classic Smokestack Lightning! This is a great example of a 'one riff song' its totally hypnotic to play and has a great feel and groove to it.At Chess' studio in Chicago in January 1956, Howlin' Wolf recorded "Smokestack Lightning".The song takes the form of "a propulsive, one-chord vamp, nominally in E major but with the flatted blue notes that make it sound like E minor", and lyrically it is "a pastiche of ancient blues lines and train references, timeless and evocative".Longtime Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin is credited with the distinctive guitar line.Howlin' Wolf sang and played harmonica, backed by pianist Hosea Lee Kennard, guitarists Willie Johnsonand Hubert Sumlin, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer Earl Phillips. If you find this stuff useful leave me a review on Spotify or Apple PodcastsBecome a Blues Guitar Show Member: https://www.buzzsprout.com/950998/subscribeShoot me a question to cover in the upcoming episodes by emailing ben@thebluesguitarshow.comFollow me on instagram @bluesguitarshowpodcastSupport the show

In City Scenes we focus on the music scene of a different city each week, taking in a bit of the history, hearing music by some of the most famous artists to come out of whichever city we're focusing on, and learning about exciting current day sounds that are being made in it right now. We're going through the Alphabet from A-Z and for this episode we're on C and looking at the City of Chicago. Chicago is a City of 2.6 million people located in the state of Illinois in the American Midwest of the USA. It has a huge musical history that it would be impossible to try and cover in the space of half an hour so today we look at some of the main styles of music that the city is known for, namely blues, soul, Chicago house and hip hop and finally we look at an exciting new wave of indie rock bands that are currently stirring things up in the city. To understand the roots of the music that Chicago has produced over the years we can look back to a phenomenon called the Great Migration which happened in between 1910 and 1970. During this time there was a huge influx of poor African American workers to Chicago who arrived escaping the segregation and discrimination that existed in southern states of the USA and seeking employment in the industrial cities of the north. Of course these migrants brought a huge wave of culture to the city and the musical traditions of Jazz and Blues arrived with them. In Chicago these music forms developed and evolved and Chicago came to be known as a center for what people called Chicago Blues and Chicago-Style or Dixieland Jazz. Some of the most famous blues musicians of all time are from the city of Chicago such as Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf and Chicago Blues which generally featured electrically amplified Guitars, bass guitars, drums and piano, was an important step and influence in the development of what we know as Rockn Roll Music. In the 1960s and 1970s Chicaco was also a centre for soul music which also found its way up to the city from the southern states of the USA. Artists like Curtis Mayfield, The Staple Singers, Earth Wind and Fire and Chaka Khan are all children of Chicago. Another type of music that was created and is synonymous with Chicago is House music or Chicago house as its also known. House music these days is at the center of modern day dance music and its influence is directly responsible for most of the music we hear in clubs all over the world. House music started when DJs like Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy started playing Disco music and early European electronic music in Chicago nightclubs with a focus on the repetitive and rhythmic drum and bass elements in each track. Soon local producers like Marshall Jefferson started recording their own DIY versions of the music they were hearing in clubs and House music was born. Chicago House music that can be identified by a steady 4 to the floor beat made with drum machines, synthesized basslines and melodies, soulful vocals and samples. But the original format of house music has been developed and evolved into countless forms of dance music such as techno, trance, dance pop and bass music. In more recent times, one of the most famous artists to have come out of the city is Kanye West, who has done huge things in terms of putting Chicago on the map when it comes to Hip Hop in the USA. Finally, we end this episode of City Scenes with a look at the current day DIY inde guitar rock scene that is currently flourishing in the city. Bands like Friko and lifeguard, Post Office Winter and Horsegirl are part of an exciting new wave of young talented musicians that are currently putting out music, playing house shows and supporting each other as a scene. We would recommend diving into all of their music to hear what all the noise is about. Next week we`ll be back for another City Scenes with the letter D and we will be going 4 hours down the road to Detroit

Tom Ellis joins me on episode 62 for something a little bit different as we do a retrospective of the legendary Paul Butterfield, with Tom our resident expert. Born in 1942 in Chicago, Butterfield frequented many of the South Side blues clubs located there and even had the audacity to hire Howling Wolf's rhythm section before going on to record his seminal album ‘The Paul Butterfield Blues Band'. His high energy form of blues launched him on the scene and he quickly followed this with the genre busting East West album, with the band evolving further in the following albums by incorporating horns. Butter moved to Woodstock and formed Better Days. He also appeared in some notable sideman roles, including The Last Waltz concert with The Band.Butterfield has left us a tremendous body of work. He helped bring blues to the mainstream and created his own sound on harmonica that is as influential as any of the classic harmonica players.Links:Tom's Blues Access magazine articles on Butterfield:http://www.bluesaccess.com/No_25/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_27/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_29/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_31/butter.htmlEast West Live album review:https://www.bluespower.com/447rev.htmHorn From The Heart documentary:https://www.hornfromtheheart.com/Homespun instructional material:https://www.homespun.com/instructors/paul-butterfield/Videos:Album with John Mayall:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR040iW52_cPerforming at Woodstock in 1969:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h62W2ARtwU8Mystery Train with The Band:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-fmqOU8_UoPlaying with Muddy Waters:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Sj5tpn-noPerforming with BB King, Eric Clapton, Steve Ray Vaughan:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-i-tIXxtlY2015 Hall of Fame Induction, with Jason Ricci:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMxFvBVTWmMPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsor:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS

Dans notre bible qu'est la grande encyclopédie du Blues de G. Herzhaft, à la lettre H, il restait une petite place entre John Lee Hooker, Lightnin'Hopkins et Howling Wolf. The Science Behind Cryptid Sightings People around the world have long been fascinated by the idea that there are strange creatures out there, ones that may or may not exist. Tales circulate about cryptids–animals whose existence can't be proved—like Bigfoot hiding out in American forests, or sea serpents lurking just below the water in coastal towns. Despite the best efforts of monster hunting T.V. shows and amateur sleuths, there may never be concrete proof that these creatures exist. But that doesn't stop people from analyzing strange photographs or odd carcasses and saying maybe, just maybe, cryptids do exist. Darren Naish, a paleontologist and author based in Southampton, U.K., has a particular interest in looking at cryptozoology—from a skeptical perspective. His breakdowns of cryptid sightings from a scientific perspective have been published in Scientific American, his website, and in his book, Hunting Monsters: Cryptozoology and the Reality Behind the Myths. Darren speaks to guest host Sophie Bushwick about faked evidence, his relationship with cryptozoology, and how cryptids may lead to other pseudoscience beliefs. Stories From Those On The Frontlines Of Sea Level Rise Next week marks the start of the UN's annual conference on climate change in Glasgow, Scotland. It's a big moment for global consensus on climate change: Nations are supposed to make new, aggressive pledges to lower their emissions in the attempt to prevent the planet from hitting 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming. Meanwhile, in the world we see and touch, seas are already rising. In some coastal areas, seas have risen between 0.5 to 1.5 feet in the last century. We're also already seeing hurricanes with higher storm surge, and heavier rainfall. More change, of course, is projected. The SciFri Book Club has been talking about these risks, and reading about how these numbers have endangered wetlands, flooded homes, lost livelihoods, and sometimes scattered communities in Elizabeth Rush's 2018 book Rising: Dispatches From The New American Shore. But while we've talked to wetland scientists and Elizabeth herself, the voices of community members most affected by climate change—a key part of Rising's mission—were still missing. In a final conversation with guest host Sophie Bushwick, producer Christie Taylor shares some of the stories of people on the frontlines, including a real-estate agent who helped his neighbors relocate after Hurricane Sandy, and the leader of the Gullah Geechee people on the sea islands of the southeast coast. Plus, social scientist A.R. Siders' insights into communities' need to adapt to sea level rise, and how they can be most successful. Listen To The Haunting Howls That Once Permeated Europe Last year, Melissa Pons, a field recordist and sound designer, set out to capture a sound that at one time would have been familiar to almost any European: the howl of an Iberian wolf. There was a time when the sounds of wolves filled the forests and mountains of Europe. But after centuries of persecution by humans, only some 12,000 wolves remain in all of Europe. Isolated pockets of wolves can be found in Italy, Spain, Greece, and Finland. A sixth of the entire remaining population lives in the mountains of Portugal. Pons headed to the remote, mountainous region of Picão—a settlement on the small island Príncipe off the west coast of Africa—where there is a rehabilitation center for the Iberian wolf. There are some 350 packs of wolves spread out over about 45 acres of the reserve. Pons first explored the region and observed the wolves. Then she set up her recording gear and gathered over 100 hours of tape. From those recordings, she composed an album where each track captures a distinct soundscape made by these wolves. The album is available online and half the proceeds go toward supporting the rehabilitation center in Portugal.
The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time Various Artists, The Indestructible Beat of Soweto, 1985 The greatest album ever to be marketed under the heading “world music,” this 1985 compilation of South African pop was a huge influence on Paul Simon's Graceland that still sounds jarringly fresh today. Full of funky, loping beats and gruff, Howling Wolf-style vocals (most prominently from “goat voiced” star Mahlathini). With a sweet track by Graceland collaborators Ladysmith Black Mambazo (“Nansi Imali”), its badass joy needed no translation. - Rolling Stone Rolling Stone's pick: Awungilobolele Lauren's pick: Nansi Imali Tom's pick: Qhwayilahle Listen to the full album here! Nelson's imaginative with the instrumentation he utilizes in his country-inflected material, a nod to his sophisticated musical tastes - something he credits to his mother. We talk Crowes, Otis Redding, The Ronettes, Howling Wolf....and we see things very, very similarly.
