When she was 7 years old, Corrie Loeffler fell in love with the Scripps National Spelling Bee when her brother competed in a regional competition. Today, she is the executive director of the annual event. But first, she had her own run attempting to become the national champion. On episode 139, Corrie shares how her shot at winning it all went south and how she ultimately learned the Bee is not about winning in the first place. Even after her competition days were over, Corrie volunteered and eventually was offered a job. She also talks about the evolution of the Bee to become more inclusive in recent years and how the organization weathered the pandemic. Legislation to require public schools in Louisiana to provide free and easy-to-access menstrual products for students is a step closer to final passage. Bill author, New Orleans Representative Aimee Adatto Freeman tells us how she hopes to address, “period poverty,” the lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints. Tomorrow is the kickoff of the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee. But before we dive into this year's spellers, we take a look back at last year's champion, Zaila Avant-garde. The native of Harvey, Louisiana became the first African American – and first Louisianan – to win the Bee in its 96 years. She joined Louisiana Considered's Alana Schreiber to reflect on her experience, and share advice for this year's competitors. One of those new competitors is 12-year-old Sahil Thorat. And as the 7th grader from Caddo Magnet Middle School in Shreveport prepares for his Scripps debut, he shares how he first got interested in the Bee and tells us how to promote more spelling competitions in Louisiana. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our digital editor is Katelyn Umholtz. Our engineers are Garrett Pittman, Aubry Procell, and Thomas Walsh. You can listen to Louisiana Considered Monday through Friday at 12:00 and 7:30 pm. Wally Funk tried for decades to become an astronaut, at a time before NASA allowed women into orbit. This year she finally flew to space at age 82. The Atlantic shares her remarkable story. Two women broke barriers in football in 2021. Sports Illustrated has what you should know about Sarah Thomas, the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl. And NPR introduces Maia Chaka, the first Black woman to officiate an NFL game. It started with a few kids biking to school together for safety. It turned into a mass movement that touched hearts around the world, NPR reports. Two fierce rivals were neck-and-neck for Olympic gold. Sports Illustrated shows what happened next: Instead of going on to a tie-breaking round, they made the surprising decision to share victory. Zaila Avant-garde captured the nation’s attention as the first African American winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. But Variety found there was much more to her. In a year with its share of dark times, goofy moments on social media helped give us all a lift. Wall Street Journal columnist Jason Gay lists some favorites. IT'S OFFICAL!! Our IRSPNSBL antics caught up to us and we are officially dropped from whatever distribution deal we thought we had. The men in this world just might not be ready to hear what needs to be said. So f$%k it, hear us talk about what got us dropped this weeks proves how on point our conversation from two episodes was. We also discuss kids behavior in school and professionalism amongst the youth of the black community and our thoughts on "code switching". We share how our weeks have been while we talk music. Lastly, congrats to Zaila Avant-garde on her spelling bee win. Check out the crew as we show why we should never spell a word without the help of spell checker.

But flashback to the year 1908, and Dr. Carol François and Kourtney Square, her niece, will tell about how the level playing field of the national spelling bee was unleveled by systemic racism and a Black/African American girl almost became the first national spelling bee winner years before Zaila Avant-garde's historic 2021 win. If you are like me and have no idea what murraya is, it is a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees. Hardly a word most of us would know or use in everyday conversations. On today's show, we celebrate the American greatness that is Zaila Avant-garde. The hoops superstar who also won the spelling bee. Kid's going places. A Wuhan virologist claims covid originated in America and “white supremacists” are bullying anti-lab leak scientists. Hilarious use of America's own bullshit against us. A.I. reveals where aliens might be hiding in the galaxy and Brandon believes the FBI is using a longer term recruitment plan to get him on the new X-Files unit. Seems plausible really. Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 68 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"Space Colonizers.” There is something unholy and unnatural about the billionaires' race into space. In this episode, I tell you what so off-putting about it to me. I'll also try and point your direction to how we must begin to pay more attention to the growing partisan-politicization of US public school boards. If we truly care about ALL students' rights to learn, we have to begin to be more active in school board advocacy. I'll tell you why. Finally, we have to applaud Zaila Avant-garde for her recent Scripps Spelling Bee win. But, we also can't forget to pay homage to the Black girl once deprived of her victory, Ms. MacNolia Cox. Learning about her doesn't lessen our celebration of Zaila, but helps us understand just how sweet it is! After you tune in, let me know what you think of this episode by leaving me a 5 star review. When I was editing this episode and saw it was coming out on 7-11, I had to call it "oh thank heaven," because who can't get that saying out of your head? Let us know what you think of them. Bridget is looking forward to a delicious One Pot Spaghetti Bolognese this week.Nick wants to make this Grilled Steak with Beer Mustard Sauce recipe again. But there were so many good recipes on this week's meal plan, Nick had a really hard time choosing, and you should check out the whole plan. Thanks for tuning in this week, we hope you enjoyed a little time with us. Joy Reid leads The ReidOut with newly-released video evidence--which we warn you is disturbing--from the Capitol insurrection. Rep. Madeleine Dean joins to explain the next steps in the Jan. 6 select committee probe, and gives her sharp critique of House and Senate Republicans. Then, researcher Robert Jones explains the fanatical undercurrents that helped fuel the Capitol insurrection saying, "The root of all of this--Make America Great Again, QAnon--is this fundamental belief that America was designed and given by God to White European Christians as their own private promise land." Next, we turn to the parents trying to ban Ruby Bridges' memoir, telling her iconic story of integration as a six-year-old Black girl facing a White, racist mob. Historian Timothy Snyder has uncovered how this type of backlash against acknowledging America's racial past echoes sinister "memories laws" enacted in authoritarian countries that ultimately undermine all citizens. Plus--we end with a Moment of Joy: Fourteen-year-old Zaila Avant-garde becoming the first African-American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee. All this and more in this Friday edition of The ReidOut with Joy Reid.
