For twentieth-century Jewish immigrants and their children attempting to gain full access to American society, performative masculinity was a tool of acculturation. However, as scholar Miriam Eve Mora demonstrates, this performance is consistently challenged by American mainstream society that holds Jewish men outside of the American ideal of masculinity. Depicted as weak, effeminate, cowardly, gentle, bookish, or conflict-averse, Jewish men have been ascribed these qualities by outside forces, but some have also intentionally subscribed themselves to masculinities at odds with the American mainstream.  Carrying a Big Schtick: Jewish Acculturation and Masculinity in the Twentieth Century (Wayne State UP, 2024) dissects notions of Jewish masculinity and its perception and practice in America in the twentieth century through the lenses of immigration and cultural history. Tracing Jewish masculinity through major themes and events including both World Wars, the Holocaust, American Zionism, Israeli statehood, and the Six-Day War, this work establishes that the struggle of this process can shed light on the changing dynamics in religious, social, and economic American Jewish life.

DigitalFeeling

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2024 12:23

Conclusion : leur positionnement n'est pas clair. In the U.S., there are at least 1.2 million immigrants from Middle Eastern and North African countries, and close to 4 million descendants from prior waves of immigration. Yet there's very little research on the experiences of those families with the U.S. child welfare system. What do we need to know to deliver relevant and culturally appropriate services? Are we affected by assumptions or stereotypes? Do we understand these families' unique challenges and strengths? Dr. Marina Bassili joined us to help us explore the topic.Topics in this episode:Origin story (1:53)What are MENA families? This episode is a part of a continuing series to enable you to hear the spectrum of American Indian/Native American/Indigenous/First Nations voices, especially in their response to Christianity and its history in the United States. If you are interested in this interview, you may also be interested in my interview with Dr. Tink Tinker, an Osage man, in Episode 8. My guest for this episode is The Reverend Dr. Tim Ross. Tim is a close friend of mine. Until Covid, we were in a prayer/conversation group together for over a decade. Tim is a pastor, teacher, cross-cultural worker, husband, dad of four grown children, and grandfather of five grandchildren. He is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation (West). He has served as minister of the Hopwood Christian Church in Elizabethton, TN since 1996. Prior to that, Tim and his family served with Christian Missionary Fellowship among the Maasai tribe in Kenya, Africa. Tim is an instructor at Emmanuel Christian Seminary, mentors ministers and missionaries, and is passionate about building relationships with folks of all cultures, with immigrants, prisoners, and folks who struggle to get by. He is a graduate of Milligan College and Emmanuel Christian Seminary. Tim is here to share with us his experience as a Cherokee, a Christian, a minister, a missionary, and his beginning work with NAIITS (originally referred to as North American Institute for Indigenous Theological Studies). Greetings Glocal Citizens! My guest this week is Ghanaian-Briton, DJ, lecturer, cultural writer and researcher Kobina “Kobby” Ankomah Graham. Raised between the alternate realities of Ghana and Britain, he is passionately curious about music, African culture, and counterculture. Through almost two decades of lecturing, researching (https://kobbygraham.com/teaching-academia/), public speaking, developing creative projects, curating music (https://kobbygraham.com/selected-creative-and-cultural-activities/) and freelance writing (https://kobbygraham.com/freelance-writing/), he has championed arts and culture. He has explored this idea in settings ranging from classrooms to international conferences, and in numerous workshops, panels, podcasts, publications, and dance floors. Along the way, he has been profiled by platforms like the BBC, written for others like The Guardian (https://kobbygraham.com/freelance-writing/), received a Miles Morland African Writers Scholarship (https://milesmorlandfoundation.com/entry-requirements) and DANIDA (https://ghana.um.dk/en/danida-en) funding for Ph.D. research on Ghana's alternative music scene. In doing these things, he is creating pathways for young African creatives, cultural practitioners and journalists to follow. These sentiments come through poetically in this two-part conversation offering wonder-filled insight into a life lived in Accra in view of an evolving arts and culture scene impacting both the local and global creative landscapes. I am looking for undergraduate military veterans to invest about 10-15 minutes to complete a secure, anonymous survey. Volunteers will remain anonymous (no names or email addresses required), and the survey can be taken online at any time. The purpose of my research is to better understand the experiences of military veterans enrolled in undergraduate higher education programs and factors impacting their academic success. Benefits of participation in this study include contributing to the understanding of veterans' cultural and career transitions out of the military into civilian life. Your participation will also aid in furthering understanding of the needs of transitioning veterans so that others providing support services can better address these needs in the future.
