In this episode, Glenn and Pat explore the vital role of rhythm and rituals in dog training. These two elements, when intentionally used, can provide clarity and structure to the training process—both for the dog and the handler. The episode breaks down how rituals help dogs understand how to enter a scenario correctly. Whether it's a training session, a working environment, or a daily routine, consistent rituals reduce confusion, build engagement, and set clear expectations from the outset. Equally important is the idea of developing rhythm throughout your training, which ensures continuity, flow, and a sense of timing that strengthens communication. When applied properly, rhythm supports the integrity of your work and helps maintain focus and consistency over time. If you've ever felt your sessions were chaotic or that your dog was unsure about what's expected, this episode will help you refine your process and bring more balance and clarity to your training. Glenn and Pat dive into the nuances of burnout—how it differs from failure, where the overlap exists, and why it's essential to make the distinction. They discuss personal insights, the mental weight of pressure and expectation, and the cultural narratives that often conflate stepping back with giving up. We also invite our community to weigh in. In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, we welcome back Sam King from Therapy Dogs Australia to update us on the world of therapy dogs and their vital work with children. Since we last spoke, Sam was facing challenges, including navigating advisors who have tried to influence how these dogs should be trained. Some of these suggestions, unfortunately, pushed back against proven and essential safe practices—raising serious concerns about the welfare of both the dogs and the children they serve. Sam walks us through what's changed since her last visit on the show and shares detailed insights into what it takes to properly assess a dog for therapy work with children. From evaluating temperament and resilience to ensuring handlers follow rigorous safety protocols, Sam explains why the assessment process is so critical to ensure success and well-being on both ends of the leash. Whether you're interested in therapy work, dog behaviour, or just want to hear how this incredible field is evolving, this episode offers a meaningful and expert-driven perspective. In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, Glenn and Pat dive into a reality that's often overlooked: dog training can be messy. It's not always a clean, linear process. There are times when our communication with dogs—or even our students—isn't as clear as it needs to be, and that lack of clarity can hinder progress. We explore how training sessions sometimes fall apart not because of effort, but because of missing or miscommunicated information. Whether it's the handler failing to clearly mark behaviours, or a student misunderstanding a concept, clarity is critical. The episode looks at how to better identify these gaps and provide the information needed to reduce confusion and increase success in training outcomes. Whether you're a trainer, handler, or dog owner, this episode serves as a reminder that the messiness of dog training isn't failure—it's a sign that better communication is needed. This week's episode of The Canine Paradigm is one of the hardest we've ever had to record. Episode 334: You Made Me a Better Trainer is a deeply personal tribute to Randy, who recently passed away. Sometimes, putting out an episode makes things all too real—and that was the case here. Avoiding the microphone felt easier than confronting the grief. But Randy deserves to be honoured properly. He wasn't just a dog—he was a mentor, a friend, and someone who profoundly shaped how I train. he was a big loss to Narelle and I In this episode, Pat and I reflect on the lessons he taught us—some spoken, some quietly observed—and the immense gratitude we feel for having known him. There are dogs who enter your life and leave a mark that never fades. Randy was one of those dogs. “The greatness of a dog is not in how he dies, but in how he lives, and the lives he touches along the way.” Glenn Cooke This isn't a typical training episode. It's a conversation from the heart, shared with everyone who knew Randy or has ever had someone change their life in the way he changed mine. In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, Glenn and Pat introduce a structured concept that Pat has been refining—the Dog Trainer's Triangle of Control. This model focuses on controlling three essential elements: the dog, the reinforcer, and the environment. The triangle offers trainers a simple yet powerful blueprint for structuring learning in the early phases of dog training and life development. By managing these three factors, trainers can significantly reduce confusion, improve communication, and create optimal learning conditions for dogs. Glenn and Pat break down how each point of the triangle works in practice and why this method is highly effective when applied thoughtfully. If you're looking to strengthen your foundational training or rethink how you set up your sessions, this episode will provide a highly actionable framework. In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, we welcome our first guest of 2025, Gavin Crown, one of the few individuals in the world certified to teach CrossFit. As an expert in structured training, Gavin brings a fresh perspective on how fitness principles could enhance dog training. Many dog training methods rely on subjective assessments. However, fitness training follows a structured approach that tracks progress over time. By applying similar principles, trainers could improve their ability to measure a dog's development, adjust training strategies, and ensure long-term success. Additionally, Glenn discusses an issue that is slowing down progress in the dog training industry. While trainers constantly seek to refine their techniques, some member groups actively block innovations. As a result, many professionals face unnecessary roadblocks, preventing real advancements in dog training. So, how can we change this? This episode explores practical solutions, offering a new way to think about progress. By combining structured tracking with modern training approaches, we can create a more effective and accountable system for trainers and dog owners alike. In this follow-up episode of The Canine Paradigm, we continue last week's discussion on PETA's stance on dog ownership. This time, we take a closer look at past comments allegedly made by Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of PETA, which suggest a desire to see pet ownership come to an end. Some of our listeners pointed out that PETA actively encourages people to adopt dogs from shelters. While this may seem contradictory, we examine whether there is a deeper motive behind this message. Could promoting shelter adoptions be part of a larger agenda? Glenn and Pat explore these perspectives, shedding light on the inconsistencies and controversies surrounding PETA's messaging. If you've ever questioned the long-term vision behind certain animal rights movements, this episode is a must-listen. The importance of time and Hermetic principles. Glenn and Pat delve into two interconnected yet unique topics: the value of time and the application of Hermetic principles. Glenn highlights the critical role time plays in the lives of our dogs, emphasising how professionals in the dog industry—whether trainers or health specialists—are effectively giving dogs the gift of more time. By enhancing their quality of life, resolving behavioural challenges, or improving their overall health, these professionals add immeasurable value to the lives of our canine companions. Pat takes the discussion into an intriguing direction by introducing the Hermetic principles, a set of philosophical teachings that explore universal truths. He shares how these principles influence his perspective on dog training, problem-solving, and personal development. This blend of philosophical and practical insights offers a fresh perspective on how we approach our relationships with dogs and the time we share with them. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation that merges the tangible impact of time with the philosophical depth of Hermetic teachings. In this episode, Who is the main character in your story? We dive into the complexities of dog training communities and the dynamics that arise within them. Recent verbal scuffles and heated discussions have led to accusations of cult-like behaviour among some groups and businesses in the dog training world. These disputes have raised important questions about loyalty, influence, and why people may follow individuals or organisations that demonstrate harmful or manipulative behaviour. We examine the psychological factors that drive such loyalty, from a desire for belonging to fear of exclusion or retaliation. We also explore how power dynamics, charisma, and manipulation tactics can play a significant role in these situations. This episode invites listeners to reflect on their own experiences in the dog training industry—or any community they are part of—and consider who the main character in their story truly is. Are you acting in alignment with your values, or are you being directed by someone else's agenda? In this weeks episode of The Canine Paradigm, we explore some of the most common challenges faced by dog owners and trainers, including resource guarding, destructive chewing, aggression, and a general lack of understanding of dog behaviour. The phrase “Stop Focusing on the Spider” serves as a reminder not to fixate on surface-level issues while overlooking deeper behavioural causes. We discuss how focusing too narrowly on a specific behaviour can cause trainers and owners to miss the bigger picture. For example, addressing destructive chewing requires understanding the root causes, such as boredom, anxiety, or unmet needs. Similarly, dealing with aggression or resource guarding goes beyond simply stopping the behaviour—it's about understanding the underlying motivations and triggers. Throughout the episode, we break down practical strategies for approaching behaviour issues holistically. We highlight the importance of continuous learning and developing a deeper understanding of animal behaviour. Whether you're a trainer or a dog owner, this episode offers valuable insights into managing problem behaviours with a well-rounded approach. In this weeks episode of The Canine Paradigm, we delve into the fascinating interplay between negative reinforcement and positive reinforcement in dog training. The concept of “pushing in and pulling out of behaviour” explains how negative reinforcement can push a dog into a desired behaviour, while positive reinforcement pulls them out by rewarding completion. We explore how this dynamic works in shaping behaviours and how it fits into the broader phases of training. From the initial learning stages to proofing behaviours for reliability, understanding the balance of reinforcement types can significantly improve training outcomes. Hopefully you will gain insights into practical applications of this concept, with examples of how to use shaping effectively to create clear communication with your dog. Whether you're working on foundational behaviours or refining advanced skills, this episode provides valuable strategies for better training results. In this episode , we continue last week's conversation about the challenges faced by dog rescue groups. While the previous episode focused on the difficulties presented by gatekeepers and front-facing roles, this week we shift the spotlight to the other side of the coin—poor accountability from those seeking to adopt or surrender dogs. Rescue workers often deal with a barrage of excuses and a lack of responsibility from the public, making their already demanding jobs even more challenging. We unpack some of the most frustrating behaviours and explore how personal accountability can make a huge difference for rescue organisations, adopters, and the dogs themselves. Beyond rescue, we discuss troubling behaviours in the broader dog industry. From unprofessionalism to ethical missteps, we address the importance of accountability at all levels. Finally, we dive into some wild conspiracies that initially seemed far-fetched but turned out to be surprisingly true. This episode is an eye-opener for anyone passionate about dog welfare, offering insights into the struggles of rescue workers, the importance of personal accountability, and some jaw-dropping industry stories. In this weeks episode, we tackle some of the frustrating realities of the dog rescue world. We discuss how certain rescue groups create excessive red tape and barriers, making it incredibly difficult for well-meaning adopters to rescue a dog. This unnecessary gatekeeping can delay or prevent good people from giving a dog a loving home, and we explore why this happens and its impact on both adopters and dogs. On the flip side, we highlight the issue of loose operators who quickly “flip” dogs without the proper care or management. These operators often overlook essential safety and behavioural checks, putting both the dogs and new owners at risk. The episode brings to light these stark contrasts within the dog rescue community. However, it's not all criticism. We also take a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible rescue workers who truly make a difference. These dedicated individuals sacrifice time, energy, and resources to save dogs, often working tirelessly and under challenging conditions. Their passion and commitment deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. Join us as we unpack the complexities of the dog rescue world, share real stories, and advocate for a more balanced, responsible approach to helping dogs in need. In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, Glenn Cooke shares his incredible experiences in America alongside his wife, Narelle Cooke. They attended the Feed Real Institute seminar, where leading experts in dog health and nutrition laid out the realities of poor-quality pet food and outlined simple yet effective changes to improve the well-being of our pets. The seminar was eye-opening, highlighting the significant impact nutrition has on both pet and working dogs. Glenn and Narelle's American adventure didn't stop there. They travelled to meet enthusiastic TCP listeners and concluded their trip with a seminar in Virginia, hosted by Melanie Benware. Glenn proudly watched as Narelle captivated attendees over two days with her deep knowledge of canine nutrition. To top it off, Glenn presented a full day on puppy acceleration, offering guidance on how to raise puppies from breeders or rescue situations to reach their fullest potential, tailored to suit the family's lifestyle. The trip was not only successful but also enriching, filled with the joy of meeting wonderful people, old friends, and seeing the stunning sights of America. In this episode, we explore the concept of “struggle cuddles” with your dog and dive into how perspectives in dog training can change over time. We discuss activities or techniques that trainers may have disliked or avoided in the past but have since embraced as valuable training tools. Additionally, we cover the opposite scenario—methods or practices trainers once believed in but now feel are ineffective or even counter-productive. The conversation provides insights into how evolving experiences and learning can reshape a trainer's approach to dog training. In Episode 314 of The Canine Paradigm, we explore training methods to stop chasing behaviour in dogs by discussing a groundbreaking study titled "Comparison of the Efficacy and Welfare of Different Training Methods in Stopping Chasing Behavior in Dogs." This study offers valuable insights into how different training approaches affect the success of stopping unwanted behaviours, particularly chasing, while considering the welfare of the dogs involved. We break down the study's findings, highlighting the pros and cons of various training methods to stop chasing behaviour in dogs. The research reveals that different methods can lead to varying degrees of success, especially when considering the impact on the dog's well-being. In addition, we delve into the topic of deprivation in dog training. While deprivation can sometimes enhance the effectiveness of training methods to stop chasing behaviour in dogs, it also raises concerns about ethics and welfare. We discuss how this approach fits into modern dog training and what it means for both the effectiveness and overall welfare of the dog. In Episode 313 of The Canine Paradigm, we dive deep into the intricacies of reward placement, direct and indirect reinforcement, and how these elements impact training success. Moreover, understanding where and how you deliver rewards can drastically shape your dog's behaviour. In particular, we explore the nuances of direct reinforcement, where the reward is tied closely to the dog's action, versus indirect reinforcement, where the reward is less immediate. Additionally, one of the key insights is how improper reward placement can lead to undesirable behaviours, including the development of chewy grips. For instance, we discuss why dogs may develop chewy grips when rewards are poorly timed or misplaced, and how owners often unknowingly contribute to this problem. As a result, it's all too common for dog owners to unintentionally reinforce the wrong behaviours, leading to a confused or over-excited dog. Finally, our goal is to help you become a more effective dog handler by shedding light on the small details that can make a huge difference in your training outcomes. Join us in this episode as we explain the connection between reinforcement strategies and common training challenges. In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, we dive into a range of topics discussed in our training forum, including how to handle a bored dog and avoid turning them into a reactive mess. One common problem is how some dog owners inadvertently derail their dog's training by making critical mistakes. We also explore how household partners, who aren't fully invested in the training process, contribute to ongoing behavioural issues. Moreover, we address the growing tension with force-free (FF) trainers and how their fear-mongering campaigns seem to be escalating. Rather than promoting balanced methods, some FF trainers are increasingly pushing extreme narratives that leave dog owners feeling anxious and overwhelmed. A major takeaway from this episode is the importance of consistency in training. A bored dog can quickly develop destructive behaviours, like digging, when they're not properly engaged. However, a lack of unity in the household can make even the best training programs ineffective. This episode provides actionable advice on how to engage your dog, keep them stimulated, and ensure all family members are on board with the training. In the classic tale The Emperor's New Clothes, the emperor is deceived into believing he is wearing fine garments when, in fact, he is wearing nothing at all. Similarly, some dog trainers on social media are forcing a narrative of success that does not truly exist. They craft stories of quick fixes and foolproof methods, but when dog owners apply these methods, the results often fall short. As a result, dog owners frequently find themselves frustrated when reality fails to meet the promises made by these trainers. By forcing a narrative of success, these trainers rely heavily on flashy marketing and carefully edited videos to push their agenda. They insist their methods are perfect and will yield guaranteed results. However, when dog owners try to replicate these techniques at home, they soon discover that the narrative doesn't hold up. The promises of instant transformation simply do not deliver in real-world situations. Furthermore, these trainers often double down on forcing a narrative by blaming the dog owners when the methods fail. Instead of admitting that the training approach may be flawed, they claim the owner didn't follow instructions properly. Consequently, dog owners end up doubting their abilities rather than recognising that the real issue lies in the forced narrative itself. Therefore, to avoid being misled by such tactics, it is crucial for dog owners to find trainers who focus on delivering real, sustainable results rather than forcing a narrative that only serves to build their social media presence. Just as the emperor eventually realised he had been deceived, dog owners must see through the illusion. In the end, forcing a narrative may create temporary attention, but genuine success comes from proven, effective training methods that stand the test of time. In Episode 310 of The Canine Paradigm, we discuss the dog training Rachael Raygun Olympic scandal and its implications for both the sports world and our industry. The controversy surrounding Rachael Raygun's performance highlights a troubling trend: the perceived privilege of those with academic credentials, particularly PhDs, as the sole authorities on complex issues. However, this bias isn't limited to sports. In dog training, the divide between those with formal academic qualifications and those with extensive practical experience continues to grow. The dog training Rachael Raygun Olympic scandal shows that assuming PhDs alone hold all the answers is misguided. Moreover, this mindset creates rifts within our industry and undervalues the real-world expertise that experienced trainers bring to the table. Furthermore, we're concerned about the ongoing narrative that unfairly targets balanced trainers. Labelling these professionals as "punishment trainers" relies on emotional misinformation, which only serves to divide the community. This kind of gas lighting is exhausting and does nothing to improve dog training quality or the well-being of the dogs we care for. Therefore, it's time for a more balanced approach—one that respects both academic knowledge and practical experience. By fostering a more inclusive and open-minded discussion, we can create better outcomes for everyone, whether in the sports arena or within the dog training field. n Episode 309 of our podcast, we dive into the critical concept of the canine ladder of aggression. This episode is a must-listen for both new and experienced dog trainers, as we break down the visual tool that illustrates the various levels of aggression in dogs, ranging from subtle signals to more overt behaviours. Using the traffic light system, the ladder of aggression is an essential framework that helps trainers and handlers understand where a dog might be on the spectrum of stress and aggression. This system categorises the dog's behaviour into green, yellow, and red zones, representing calm, warning, and dangerous stages, respectively. Understanding these levels is crucial for preventing escalation and managing situations effectively. By recognising early signs of discomfort, trainers can intervene before a dog reaches a critical point, ensuring safer interactions for both dogs and handlers. In a recent podcast episode, we addressed a controversial claim regarding the origins of dog sports, specifically an unfounded assertion that these activities and police dogs have ties to Nazi Germany. However, it is crucial to clarify that the origins of dog sports, such as obedience, agility, and protection work, are deeply rooted in history, well before any association with extremist ideologies. These sports were developed to enhance the bond between humans and dogs, promote physical fitness, and celebrate canine capabilities. Moreover, the spread of misinformation, often perpetuated by content creators on platforms like YouTube, can distort the true origins of dog sports. Some creators, unfortunately, prioritize sensationalism over accuracy to attract views and generate income, which can lead to misleading narratives. Therefore, it's essential for viewers to critically assess the sources of information. Additionally, content creators should uphold standards of accuracy and responsibility to avoid spreading falsehoods.here's an episode where we talk about the building of PSA Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Putting the dog back on lead is a fundamental skill that can significantly enhance training and repair various behavioural issues. Experts in the field emphasise the importance of this practice for both novice and experienced dog owners. They believe that putting the dog back on lead helps reinforce obedience, control, and trust between the handler and the dog. This practice can correct behaviours such as pulling, lunging, and ignoring commands. When a dog is back on lead, it must focus on the handler, which strengthens the dog's response to commands. This consistent practice helps dogs understand their boundaries and the expectations set by their owners. Additionally, putting the dog back on lead can be a confidence booster for both the dog and the owner. It provides a structured environment where the dog can relearn and practice essential skills, making it easier to address and correct unwanted behaviours. The lead acts as a communication tool, guiding the dog and reinforcing positive behaviour. Incorporating this practice into daily training routines ensures that dogs remain well-behaved and responsive. The simple act of putting the dog back on lead is a powerful method to enhance skills, repair training issues, and foster a stronger bond between the dog and the owner. The past couple of weeks in Sydney have been nothing short of amazing. We were thrilled to welcome our American family, Shawn and Janet Edwards, along with their colleagues Zack Burke and Travis Lloyd. Their expertise and passion for training were invaluable as they joined us for PSA trial judging, decoy certification, Deadpool decoy school, and Janet's seminar. Training is at the heart of everything we do, and having these experts with us elevated our sessions to new heights. The PSA trial judging was rigorous and insightful, providing our participants with constructive feedback to refine their techniques. Moreover, the decoy certification process was equally intense, ensuring that our decoys are prepared for any scenario. One of the highlights was the Deadpool decoy school, where Zack and Travis showcased their advanced skills and strategies. This left our team inspired and eager to incorporate these new methods into our training routines. Additionally, Janet's seminar was another standout, offering deep dives into specialized training techniques that captivated everyone in attendance. Overall, this experience reinforced the importance of continuous training and collaboration. Consequently, we are grateful to Shawn, Janet, Zack, and Travis for their dedication and expertise. Their contributions have undoubtedly made a lasting impact on our training programs, and we look forward to future collaborations. In this episode of our podcast, we tackle the often misunderstood topic of punishment in dog training. There's been a lot of misinformation circulating, including the outrageous claim that balanced trainers hold positive punishment seminars. We want to set the record straight and explain how punishment, when used correctly, plays a vital role in teaching dogs to eliminate or reduce unwanted behaviors. Punishment, in the context of dog training, is not about abuse or harsh methods. It's about providing clear boundaries and consequences that help dogs understand which behaviors are undesirable. This clarity aids in creating a structured environment where dogs can thrive. One of the key points we discuss is the difference between punishment and abuse. While punishment is a controlled, measured response to a specific behavior, abuse is harmful and unacceptable. Understanding this distinction is crucial for anyone involved in dog training. Throughout the episode, we also delve into how punishment, when balanced with positive reinforcement, can be an effective tool. It's about finding the right balance and ensuring that the well-being of the dog is always the priority. Join us as we dispel myths and provide insights into the responsible use of punishment in dog training. Listen now to gain a better understanding and become a more informed trainer. In our latest podcast episode, we tackle a critical topic: the peril of false knowledge. While ignorance poses risks, misinformation masquerading as truth can be far more dangerous. Recently, a comment on social media claimed that men are more likely to attend positive punishment seminars than women. This statement is not only unfounded but also misleading. Throughout our extensive careers in the dog training industry, we have never encountered anyone running or hosting such seminars. Positive punishment, which involves adding an aversive consequence after an undesired behaviour, can be used in training but only under the right circumstances. It should assist the dog in learning how to avoid a behaviour, be used sparingly, and always with compassion. Furthermore, we delve into the South Australian government's proposed plan to ban IPG (International Working Dog trial) training. This proposal represents an outrageous example of government overreach. Such regulations not only undermine professional training methods but also spread misinformation about the nature and purpose of IPG. Effective dog training requires balanced, informed approaches that prioritise both the dog's and the handler's well-being. Ignorance can lead to the spread of false knowledge, which can have detrimental effects. By staying informed and questioning dubious claims, we can combat ignorance and promote responsible training practices. Ignorance is a formidable foe, but with the right knowledge, we can overcome it. Join us as we debunk these myths and advocate for knowledge-based approaches. By listening to our podcast, you can stay informed and help combat the spread of false knowledge in the dog training community. Stay tuned, stay informed, and let's work together to promote truth and excellence in our field. In our latest podcast episode, we eagerly addressed key questions from our listeners about training dogs, particularly focusing on the importance of 'warming' when transitioning from indoor to outdoor environments. Our listeners are curious about how to maintain a strong connection with their dogs amidst a swag of new outdoor stimuli, and we were excited to delve into these challenges. Firstly, warming your dog for a training session isn't just about tiring them out; it's about mentally preparing them for the shift in context from a calm indoor setting to a stimulating outdoor space. We emphasized starting with familiar commands like 'sit' and 'look at me' to help redirect your dog's focus from distractions back to you. This approach not only primes them for learning but also reinforces your bond. Furthermore, we discussed the value of a physical warm-up. A brisk walk or a playful fetch session can significantly reduce excess energy, thus improving your dog's concentration. These activities should be seen not just as exercise, but as integral parts of your training routine that prepare your dog for the mental challenges ahead. Ultimately, our discussion aimed to provide practical tips for our listeners, showing that with the right warming techniques, transitioning from indoor to outdoor training can be a smooth, effective process. Tune in to learn how these strategies can enhance your training sessions and deepen the connection with your dog. Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? We delved into the fascinating world of dog training, focusing on the suppression of behaviours, the concept of dogs "guessing" behaviours, and the powerful dynamics of perception between teacher and student. This discussion sheds light on how understanding and managing these elements can significantly enhance the training process and the relationship between dogs and their trainers. Suppression of unwanted behaviours is a critical aspect of dog training. It involves identifying behaviours that may be problematic or dangerous and using effective training methods to reduce or eliminate them. However, it's important to approach suppression with a strategy that promotes an understanding, rather than just punishment. This method not only fosters a safer environment but also strengthens the bond between the dog and the trainer. Furthermore, the idea that dogs may "guess" behaviours highlights the need for clear and consistent communication during training sessions. Dogs often try to anticipate commands and may end up performing the wrong actions. Trainers must be patient and persistent in guiding their canine students, helping them to learn and respond appropriately without confusion. The power of perception in the relationship between teacher and student cannot be overstated. The way a trainer perceives a dog's behaviour and the dog's perception of the trainer's intentions both play crucial roles in the effectiveness of training. Understanding and adapting to each other's signals and behaviours can lead to more successful outcomes and a more harmonious relationship. In our newest podcast episode, we explore the integration of working dogs into households and address the misleading advice suggesting that these dogs disrupt home dynamics. Despite these myths, working dogs can enhance home life, especially when combined with the right remote training techniques. These methods, often misunderstood, can actually strengthen your bond with your working dog rather than hinder it.. A significant portion of our discussion also focuses on the controversial use of electric collars or remote trainers. This often brings to mind images of harsh control methods. However, our conversation sheds light on the lack of scientific evidence supporting the notion that these tools are inherently cruel. It's crucial for dog owners to consider both the potential benefits and the proper usage of remote training devices to ensure they are used ethically and effectively. Furthermore, we explore a rather peculiar behaviour—dogs eating their own faeces. While this may seem alarming to many pet owners, we provide insights into why this happens and how it can be managed. Understanding the root causes can help owners address this behaviour more sympathetically. Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? In our latest podcast episode, we dove into the fascinating world of canine behaviour, focusing on the concept of 'play' and its multifaceted role in the lives of our dog. Addressing two insightful listener requests, we explored the intricacies of reward placement and the nuanced differences between direct and indirect rewards, shedding light on how these elements can enhance the play experience and training efficacy for both working dogs and pets. Further, we delved into the vital importance of play, not just as a leisure activity, but as a cornerstone of healthy development and emotional well-being for dogs. The discussion illuminated the stark contrasts between working dogs, who often engage in play as a form of job-related training, and pet dogs, whose playtime is more centred around bonding and recreational activities. Understanding the role of play in a dog's life is crucial for pet owners and trainers alike, offering insights into how play can be used as a tool for learning, bonding, and maintaining physical and mental health. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of their canine companions and make the most of their playtime together. In the latest episode, we delve into the fascinating world of dog training, emphasising the pivotal role of understanding and harnessing different drives. Training dogs, whether for sporting events, police work, or simply as pets, requires a nuanced approach that recognises and adapts to the diverse motivations that drive canine behaviour. Drives in dogs refer to innate impulses that guide their actions; these can include prey drive, play drive, defensive drive, and pack drive, among others. Recognising which drive is dominant in a particular situation allows trainers to employ specific strategies that resonate with the dog's natural inclinations, leading to more effective and harmonious training sessions. Switching drives is a crucial technique in this field, offering the flexibility to navigate between different motivations to achieve desired behaviours. For instance, transitioning from a prey drive to a play drive can help in teaching control and cooperation, essential in disciplines ranging from agility courses to obedience in high-stress environments. This episode explores these concepts in depth, providing insights and practical advice for trainers and dog owners alike. Understanding drives not only enhances training efficiency but also fosters a deeper bond between dogs and their handlers, making it an indispensable skill in the world of canine training. In our recent podcast, we explored the challenging situation encountered by LickiMat, a small, pet-friendly business, embroiled in a digital controversy. This enterprise, renowned for its pet care innovations, unexpectedly became the target of online backlash due to its collaboration with a balanced dog trainer at the prestigious Crufts event. This incident highlights the volatile nature of online communities and the swift impact of digital activism on businesses, particularly those in the pet industry. The backlash against LickiMat was sparked by their decision to include a balanced dog trainer at their Crufts stand. While this decision was intended to demonstrate their commitment to pet welfare, it inadvertently led to significant online uproar. This reaction underscores the powerful influence of digital platforms in amplifying collective actions, especially when driven by emotional responses rather than informed discussions. Furthermore, the incident with LickiMat serves as a stark reminder of the 'cancel culture' phenomenon prevalent in today's digital age. This trend, where groups swiftly mobilise to boycott or condemn businesses or individuals, can have disproportionate effects, particularly on small enterprises. In the case of LickiMat, the intense scrutiny and criticism were not only overwhelming but also diverged from the principles of constructive dialogue and mutual understanding. As businesses navigate the complex digital landscape, the LickiMat episode offers valuable lessons. It underscores the necessity for companies, especially in the pet sector, to exercise caution and strategic foresight in their digital engagements. Moreover, it highlights the importance of fostering open, respectful dialogues and prioritising empathy and transparency in all online interactions. In doing so, businesses can better manage and mitigate the risks associated with digital backlash, ensuring a more resilient and positive online presence.Support Lickimat by buying a product and letting the company know that the bullies who are holding a gun to their heads don't always get their way. https://lickimat.com/ Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? In an engaging segment of our podcast, Pat and Glenn delved into a thought-provoking topic prompted by a simple yet profound question from Pat's son, Rip. Rip had observed Remi, their family dog, being prepared for a dog trial and pondered, "If Remi is already trained, why does he still need training?" This query sparked an insightful discussion about the ongoing nature of canine training, highlighting the distinction between a dog "in training" and a "trained dog." Pat began by clarifying that a dog's training is never truly complete; it's an evolving process. He emphasised that a "trained dog" isn't a static state but a continuous commitment to learning and adaptation. "Just as humans never stop learning, a trained dog, too, is always building on existing skills and acquiring new ones," Pat explained. Thus, the concept of a trained dog involves regular practice and reinforcement to maintain and enhance their abilities. Glenn further elaborated on using references to movies, guitars and random other gibberish to basic acknowledge the direction the conversation was already heading in. The both highlighted the importance of understanding each dog's unique personality and learning curve in the training process. They agreed that training a dog is as much about building a deep, communicative bond as it is about obedience and skills. In our latest podcast episode, an off-the-cuff remark during the closing segment sparked an unexpected yet profound discussion. The phrase, casually mentioned, was not the main focus of our conversation but we find way to make interesting headings. l A blog by Larry Krohn a week back led us to explore the contrasting approaches between sport dog trainers and pet owners when faced with challenges. This casual comment prompted us to delve into how individuals find motivation and resilience in the face of adversity. Sport dog trainers, for instance, often find a way to push through obstacles, such as inclement weather, demonstrating a remarkable level of commitment. Their ability to find consistency in training, regardless of external factors, showcases the importance of perseverance in achieving goals. Conversely, pet owners might find valid reasons to adjust their training schedules when faced with similar challenges. This flexibility in approach highlights a different kind of resilience, where one finds balance between commitment and adaptability. The discussion allowed us to find valuable insights into how the mindset we adopt in response to challenges can significantly impact our journey, not just in dog training but in various aspects of life. It's a reminder that sometimes, it's the unexpected comments that find a way to resonate with us, offering new perspectives and understanding. Being bitten by a dog can be an unexpectedly traumatic experience, leaving both physical and emotional scars. In workplaces, hobbies, and professions where interaction with dogs is common, understanding the risks and preventive measures is crucial. The trauma of a dog bite extends beyond the immediate physical injury. Victims often experience heightened anxiety, fear of dogs, and even PTSD, affecting their ability to work or engage in activities they once enjoyed. The psychological impact can be profound, altering one's sense of safety and well-being. To mitigate these risks, implementing comprehensive strategies in environments where dogs are present is essential. This includes strict adherence to safety protocols, understanding dog behavior, and recognizing warning signs before an incident occurs. Staff training plays a pivotal role in prevention. Educating employees on safe dog handling techniques can drastically reduce the likelihood of bites. Training should cover understanding dog body language, maintaining a calm and assertive demeanor, and knowing how to approach and interact with dogs safely. Moreover, first aid training is indispensable. Quick and appropriate responses to a bite can prevent severe infections and promote faster healing, reducing the long-term impact of the injury.
