Many dog trainers obsess over methods, protocols and doing things “the right way” - which 99% of the time means their way! They tend to forget clients learn in a variety of ways - if you don't adapt, they stall and disappear from your classes. In this episode, Jo & Vicky share a simple personality framework (D.I.S.C) that explains why some dog owners want quick, direct instructions while others need time, detail, and reassurance, then explain how to tweak your style to fit their different personalities. They also cover how to use that framework to improve your own performance, business partnerships, make more sales, hire the right people, and inspire them to work at their best. We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money, and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check KEY TAKEAWAYS To get better client results, you must match how you teach and support to how different personalities actually learn, decide and act. If you build offers, sales pages and processes that only work for your own personality type, you´ll miss out. You need simple options that work for all four personality types. Most “difficult” clients, team members or business partners aren't difficult. Often, it is just that their default style e.g. task vs people, fast vs slow is clashing with your go to approach. Identifying and understanding your own personality type enables you to deliberately “dial up” or “dial down” your traits to achieve better results. The strongest teams and partnerships are a combination of people with different personality profiles. It covers all of the bases but only works if each member of the team is flexible enough to adapt, when necessary. Understanding personality types also helps with the sales process. It enables you to tweak your message and the point at which you pitch your offer to work for the person you are talking to. BEST MOMENTS “I had to learn … I have to adapt if we're going to make this beneficial for everyone, having this awareness in how you coach as well.” “I need to meet them where they are at.” “Learning all of this stuff, it's given me the ability to step back and go, it's not you. It's a trait that you have that's clashing with mine.” “Ask the question - what do you need from me to make that a success?” EPISODE RESOURCES The Impact Your Personality Profile Has on Your Business with Andy Nisevic https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-impact-your-personality-profile-has-on-your/id1727170978?i=1000668232509 SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. Growing calls for an overhaul our 30-year-old dog control laws. The Listener reports between 2020 and 2024, the cost of ACC claims for dog bites rose from just over 10 and a half million to just over 15 and a half million - with most occurring in private homes. Ministry of Hound owner and dog trainer Diana Haggitt says she's in support of making changes. She told Heather du Plessis-Allan that many of the problems stem from a lack of education for dog owners. Haggitt says that includes breed specific requirements, what's involved in training a dog and what the legal obligations are. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In today's episode of Confessions of a Dog Trainer, I'm bringing you behind the scenes with Hazel - a sweet, houndy little “Bambi body” dog who's fearful of people and famous for one frustrating walk habit: putting on the brakes and refusing to move.I'm sharing what I expected when she arrived, what I actually saw, and the biggest game-changer in her training so far - including why the dial-up method on the e-collar didn't work for her the way it usually does, and why a prong collar ended up being the missing piece to help her stop freezing and start moving forward. We'll also talk about one of my favorite confidence-building frameworks for nervous dogs: job + exposure (and exactly what that looked like for Hazel this week), how my dog Johnny helped her warm up to my husband without anyone forcing an interaction, and what “real progress” looks like when you're living with a fearful dog (hint: it's usually subtle - and easy to miss if you don't know what to watch for).Plus, I answer Hazel's owner's questions about measuring progress at home, nervous pooping, and whether running with a dog like Hazel is a good idea - and I touch briefly on Azula's update, including why tools aren't about “correcting dogs all over the place,” but about clear communication and safer, calmer outings. If you have a nervous dog and you've ever wondered, Am I doing this right? - this one's for you.Products & ResourcesBook: Dear Owner (Amazon link)Dog Diary Desk Calendar E-Collar Starter Guide E Collar Video Library Brick device - get 10% off codeFind me on Instagram @walkingdogtraining

I've done several episodes recently on the responsibility of raising a puppy. The main thing to remember once you take ownership of a puppy is that they need obedience training, and you have to practice with them. Follow the guidelines below to improve your practice sessions and the predictability of the puppy's learning of obedience skills.Daily practice is essential. Practicing once in a while will not work. You have to practice correctly, the way a professional dog trainer has taught you. Short training sessions several times a day are better than a single long session.RESOURCES:Podcast Website: http://puppytalkpodcast.comSponsor Website: http://www.topgundogtraining.comDale's books: https://www.amazon.com/author/dalebuchanan Top Gun Dog Training in Huntsville, Alabama. In this episode of the USA Dog Behavior Podcast, we challenge one of the most ingrained misconceptions in the world of dog ownership: the idea of the "mean dog." Scott Sheaffer reveals why aggression in dogs is rarely a character flaw, but almost always a symptom rooted in fear. Diving deep into the critical difference between labeling a dog "aggressive" and understanding their specific fears, this episode will transform your perspective on your dog's challenging behaviors. You'll learn why a generalized label like "aggressive" is as unhelpful as telling a doctor you're simply "sick," and why identifying precise behavioral triggers is key to compassionate and effective intervention.Scott breaks down the 7 common types of dog aggression, from fear aggression and resource guarding to leash reactivity and pain-induced responses, explaining how each type is an attempt by your dog to cope with perceived threats. Discover what a behavioral trigger truly is and, most importantly, what you can do with this knowledge. Instead of punishing symptoms, learn how to identify what truly scares your dog and how to address that underlying fear with positive, humane methods. Tune in to move beyond the myth and build a deeper, more trusting relationship with your canine companion.Subscribe for more bite-sized episodes and visit USADogBehavior.com for additional resources!Find us at USADogBehavior.com.Follow us on Facebook.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional advice. People call me to discuss puppy training, and their entire focus is on potty training. This happens a lot. The goal of this episode is to shift new puppy owners' focus to the bigger picture of raising a puppy beyond potty training and crate training.A dog trainer can only provide tips on potty training, crate training, play biting, and other issues because we don't live with the dog. Most of the unwanted behavior stems from the environment and from the owners' lack of leadership. The bigger picture includes:Setting rules and boundaries, Creating a structured scheduleObedience trainingLeash trainingSocializationIt's impossible to potty train a puppy without all of these elements of raising a puppy. Work on everything at once, and you will spend very little time on potty training. Two things in particular help with potty training: 1) when a puppy can stay in one place, and 2) when your puppy is tired. The main thing you need to do for effective potty training is to control the puppies' space inside the house and NEVER take your eyes off of them unless they are in a crate just big enough for them to lie down. Above all, get rid of pee pads. PRO TIP: Monitor their water intake by giving them 1 ounce per pound of body weight. If your puppy weighs 10 lbs, give them 10 oz of water throughout the day. That means about 2 ounces of water five times a day. After they take a drink, they will need to go potty 2-3 times within the next hour. Support Dixie's Fight Against Heart Disease. Donate here. For expecting parents with dogs, the question of safety can be a source of deep anxiety. This episode provides essential reassurance and a clear, practical roadmap. We begin by dismantling the common myth of dogs viewing babies as prey, explaining instead how canine mentality leads to curiosity, not aggression, when a new family member arrives. You'll understand why a dog's confusion stems from a baby's strange movements and sounds, not malicious intent. We then move beyond theory into an actionable timeline. Learn why the crawling toddler stage is far more critical for supervision than the newborn period, and gain concrete strategies for successful introductions, creating safe spaces, and reading your dog's stress signals. This guide empowers you to replace fear with confident management, fostering a safe and loving environment where both your child and your dog can thrive together.Free Videos from This Episode: Understanding Dog Body Language6 Basic Dog Bite Prevention Essentials You Need to Know to Protect Your ChildSubscribe for more bite-sized episodes and visit USADogBehavior.com for additional resources!Find us at USADogBehavior.com.Follow us on Facebook.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional advice. Why isn't he retrieving well? This time in the season, it seems like everyone is wondering what happened to their dog. From not bringing birds all the way back, dropping birds or just going hunting again, many upland dogs are just not delivering, literally, these days. Simply put: force fetch. He'll hit the critical points in a dog's retrieving training whether flusher or pointer, and how to teach those important steps. Of course, we'll talk all things hunting and hit some of the high points of this new phase in his training career. Being an effective leader and building trust in your dog requires a skill set grounded in effective communication, temperament, and focus. What to do:Make sure your communication is crystal clear. Trim the fat. Tell the dog what you want and reward them for doing it.Set your dog up for success. Make it impossible for them to fail and let them have fun in the process.Stay focused on “teaching” the dog what you want them to learn. What not to do:DO NOT talk to them so much, especially with repeated commands, where they check outDO NOT yell at your dog.DO NOT show frustration and lack of leadership skills.DO NOT use physical force with your dog. DO NOT over-correct your dog. The focus should not be on stopping a behavior, but teaching an alternative behavior.
