More Potty Training Tips

Puppy Talk

People call me to discuss puppy training, and their entire focus is on potty training. This happens a lot. The goal of this episode is to shift new puppy owners' focus to the bigger picture of raising a puppy beyond potty training and crate training.A dog trainer can only provide tips on potty training, crate training, play biting, and other issues because we don't live with the dog. Most of the unwanted behavior stems from the environment and from the owners' lack of leadership. The bigger picture includes:Setting rules and boundaries, Creating a structured scheduleObedience trainingLeash trainingSocializationIt's impossible to potty train a puppy without all of these elements of raising a puppy. Work on everything at once, and you will spend very little time on potty training. Two things in particular help with potty training: 1) when a puppy can stay in one place, and 2) when your puppy is tired. The main thing you need to do for effective potty training is to control the puppies' space inside the house and NEVER take your eyes off of them unless they are in a crate just big enough for them to lie down. Above all, get rid of pee pads. PRO TIP: Monitor their water intake by giving them 1 ounce per pound of body weight. If your puppy weighs 10 lbs, give them 10 oz of water throughout the day. That means about 2 ounces of water five times a day. After they take a drink, they will need to go potty 2-3 times within the next hour. Support Dixie's Fight Against Heart Disease. Donate here. How Much Should a Dog Trainer Charge? | Dog Training Pricing Without Burnout

Let's Talk Dog Business

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 2025 28:46

DESCRIPTION Are you stuck on the pricing hamster wheel in your dog business – running classes, squeezing in 1:1s, but still not paying yourself properly? Today, Jo & Vicky take a more in-depth look at how much a dog trainer should charge. They unpack why asking “What are other trainers charging?” is the wrong starting point, how to work out what you need to take home, and what it really means when your current prices demand you to take on 40+ new clients a month just to survive.  You will further hone how you assess what you charge and understand why high-ticket 1:1 services can be a smarter first-phase strategy than low-ticket classes.  We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS Knowing “how much dog trainers charge” is useless. What you charge needs to start from what you personally need to take home. Look at your current services, pick the one that sells best and figure out how many of those you need to sell per month. When you do the maths and realise you need 40+ new clients a month, you know your business model is not viable. Your capacity isn't just about "hours in the diary” – it's childcare, dogs, clubs, energy levels, and when you actually work best. Your pricing has to reflect your real life, not a fantasy schedule. The idea “clients will only come at evenings and weekends” is wrong. Jo & Vicky explain how to identify and actively attract people who can train during the day. Classes that don't fill, or super‑cheap sessions e.g. £3 drop‑ins, create a lose–lose situation. They drain your time and energy, slash what client´s think your time is worth and rarely deliver good results so you put clients off rather than tempting them to book more.  High‑ticket, 1:1 offers make it easier to hit your income goals with fewer clients. You provide far better support, protect your time and avoid burnout.  Life will keep changing - kids, health, travel, regulations, overheads – so don´t lock yourself into an inflexible model that only works for one perfect season of your life.  BEST MOMENTS “Rather than what should I charge? They ask, what do people charge? So, I can copy.” “Think to yourself, Is that realistic. How much of you does that take up? Time wise, energy wise?” “We've got to be offering something that is going to be getting people a good result.” “Sometimes life happens to you as well, and your time gets taken away. So, things have to adapt.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. For expecting parents with dogs, the question of safety can be a source of deep anxiety. This episode provides essential reassurance and a clear, practical roadmap. We begin by dismantling the common myth of dogs viewing babies as prey, explaining instead how canine mentality leads to curiosity, not aggression, when a new family member arrives. You'll understand why a dog's confusion stems from a baby's strange movements and sounds, not malicious intent. We then move beyond theory into an actionable timeline. Learn why the crawling toddler stage is far more critical for supervision than the newborn period, and gain concrete strategies for successful introductions, creating safe spaces, and reading your dog's stress signals. Don't panic, no e-collar for you, just an argument for you getting deeper into the dog training process before, during and after you get your pup back from a pro trainer. In fact this guy says you may need more training than your four-footed partner. Talmage Smedley has suggestions on how to look - differently - at how your dog learns, then adjust your training approach accordingly. A look inward wouldn't hurt, either. Open your mind, ask yourself a few questions, and your dog might perform as well in the middle of the season as he did when you brought him home from the trainer. Listeners share their unique takes on early-season hunts, and in "Fix It" we help a listener find training birds. Pop culture/Memoir/autobiography This NEW EDITION contains updates, new information, additional photographs and contributions. This is a significant and very personal book. Dr. Drew Pinsky: "I commend you for having the courage to step up and do it and do it thoroughly and do it properly. I think that's a very good thing." David Carradine, The Eye Of My Tornado has been inducted into the Johnny Grant Hollywood Walk of Fame Library “…it was one long rollercoaster thrill… Mr. Toad's wild ride…intense passion and emotion. He was the eye of my tornado.” Marina Anderson. Marina Anderson was just starting out taking acting lessons at Warner Bros., when she wandered one afternoon onto the candlelit set of a Shaolin temple and met for the first time, the volatile, dark and brilliant personality that was actor and icon, David Carradine. Two dynamic people merging into a karmic-destined, intense and turbulent love relationship. Each struggling with their own demons including sexual abuse and incest. Their private life was replete with love, passion, erotic pleasure and eventually bondage, sexual experimentation, and pain as an avenue to pleasure. Their marriage was marred by a toxic secret that could not be ignored. Her writing speaks to readers universally by focusing on their personal journey, revealing the truth about the couple, addresses conquering fear and overcoming obstacles, self discovery, recovery, re-inventing and rebuilding one's self. It's her personal survival while desperately trying to save the marriage as well as Carradine's constant struggle to be someone he wasn't, but wished he could be. Spirituality, psychic John Edward, other psychics and astrologers who helped her are written about in the book as well. They were married on the Warner Bros. back lot and their six-year relationship was a whirl of auditions, star-studded parties, exotic locations, red carpets and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Marina, who was already an established actress, became Carradine's personal manager and set about rehabilitating the career of an actor who was now known for his heavy drinking. She introduced him to Quentin Tarantino, who cast David in a lead role in the popular Kill Bill films. This vaulted Carradine back onto the Hollywood A-list. After their divorce with the help of re-known celebrity Dr. Drew Pinsky (Celebrity Rehab, Sober House), issues are addressed in the consultation verbatim, occupying an entire chapter. Anderson was able to finally exorcise the demons that have haunted her for so long about their relationship and herself that almost destroyed her. “This book is an avenue for his fans and the general public to know, understand and hopefully accept him as a man, not a celluloid fantasy…to be admired for his talents and the motivations behind certain issues in his life understood. It's also to reveal the very personal interior of a marriage that people can relate to. What we do for love. We are all human beings with our faults. He was afraid people wouldn't remember him. That will never happen. The legend continues.” David Carradine's acting career spanned four decades onstage, television and cinema. He became an international sensation as Kwai Chang Caine in the 1970s hit television series Kung Fu and cemented his cult hero status with his role in the classic movie Death Race 2000. He portrayed Woody Guthrie in Hal Ashby's Bound for Glory and Bill in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films. Carradine received four Golden Globe nominations. He was a talented songwriter and musician and performed in a band called Cosmic Rescue Team. He died in a Bangkok hotel room, June 3, 2009, an apparent victim of autoerotic asphyxiation. Amid sensational media speculation, Marina refused to let David's death remain stigmatized like it was and launched her own investigation into the death of her ex-husband. Suicide? Foul play? A sex act gone wrong? Was he alone? Was there a cover-up? Her conclusions are startling.  https://amzn.to/45Wn9eUBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
