Marina Anderson Ex-Wife of David Carradine, The Eye of My Tornado / Four Feet to Fame: A Hollywood Dog Trainer's Journey

The Opperman Report

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2025 118:03 Transcription Available

Pop culture/Memoir/autobiography This NEW EDITION contains updates, new information, additional photographs and contributions. This is a significant and very personal book. Dr. Drew Pinsky: "I commend you for having the courage to step up and do it and do it thoroughly and do it properly. I think that's a very good thing." David Carradine, The Eye Of My Tornado has been inducted into the Johnny Grant Hollywood Walk of Fame Library “…it was one long rollercoaster thrill… Mr. Toad's wild ride…intense passion and emotion. He was the eye of my tornado.” Marina Anderson. Marina Anderson was just starting out taking acting lessons at Warner Bros., when she wandered one afternoon onto the candlelit set of a Shaolin temple and met for the first time, the volatile, dark and brilliant personality that was actor and icon, David Carradine. Two dynamic people merging into a karmic-destined, intense and turbulent love relationship. Each struggling with their own demons including sexual abuse and incest. Their private life was replete with love, passion, erotic pleasure and eventually bondage, sexual experimentation, and pain as an avenue to pleasure. Their marriage was marred by a toxic secret that could not be ignored. Her writing speaks to readers universally by focusing on their personal journey, revealing the truth about the couple, addresses conquering fear and overcoming obstacles, self discovery, recovery, re-inventing and rebuilding one's self. It's her personal survival while desperately trying to save the marriage as well as Carradine's constant struggle to be someone he wasn't, but wished he could be. Spirituality, psychic John Edward, other psychics and astrologers who helped her are written about in the book as well. They were married on the Warner Bros. back lot and their six-year relationship was a whirl of auditions, star-studded parties, exotic locations, red carpets and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Marina, who was already an established actress, became Carradine's personal manager and set about rehabilitating the career of an actor who was now known for his heavy drinking. She introduced him to Quentin Tarantino, who cast David in a lead role in the popular Kill Bill films. This vaulted Carradine back onto the Hollywood A-list. After their divorce with the help of re-known celebrity Dr. Drew Pinsky (Celebrity Rehab, Sober House), issues are addressed in the consultation verbatim, occupying an entire chapter. Anderson was able to finally exorcise the demons that have haunted her for so long about their relationship and herself that almost destroyed her. “This book is an avenue for his fans and the general public to know, understand and hopefully accept him as a man, not a celluloid fantasy…to be admired for his talents and the motivations behind certain issues in his life understood. It's also to reveal the very personal interior of a marriage that people can relate to. What we do for love. We are all human beings with our faults. He was afraid people wouldn't remember him. That will never happen. The legend continues.” David Carradine's acting career spanned four decades onstage, television and cinema. He became an international sensation as Kwai Chang Caine in the 1970s hit television series Kung Fu and cemented his cult hero status with his role in the classic movie Death Race 2000. He portrayed Woody Guthrie in Hal Ashby's Bound for Glory and Bill in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films. Carradine received four Golden Globe nominations. He was a talented songwriter and musician and performed in a band called Cosmic Rescue Team. He died in a Bangkok hotel room, June 3, 2009, an apparent victim of autoerotic asphyxiation. Amid sensational media speculation, Marina refused to let David's death remain stigmatized like it was and launched her own investigation into the death of her ex-husband. Suicide? Foul play? A sex act gone wrong? Was he alone? Was there a cover-up? Her conclusions are startling.  https://amzn.to/45Wn9eUBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

What to listen for:“I don't just pet them, I go, ‘this is why you train the way you train, remember that'”Today, two-thirds of the Dames of Detection, Stacy Barnett and Crystal Wing, welcome back obedience trainer Petra Ford to talk about why she believes in a “you do you” approach to dog training. When her dog Zesty dropped eye contact during their first championship run, instead of demanding compliance, Petra simply said, "You do you,” acknowledging that forcing the moment would only add pressure to an already exhausted dog. This mindset shift from control to partnership transformed what could have been a frustrated correction into a moment of trust.Petra's approach challenges conventional wisdom at every turn. While others proof their dogs by setting them up to fail, she builds confidence by making her dogs right. When Zesty struggled with imperfect fronts just weeks before nationals, instead of drilling precision, Petra threw parties for effort. "Close enough, here's a cookie" became her mantra because she understood that confidence creates precision, not the other way around. This path hasn't been easy. Training in isolation, facing constant scrutiny, Petra has walked the lonely road of positive reinforcement in a sport increasingly dominated by punishment. But her results speak louder than critics: three different dogs, multiple championships, all trained through partnership rather than dominance.Petra encourages trainers to ask themselves, "Would I want to be my own teammate?" She treats her dogs as partners, not tools—reading their communication, respecting their limits, and celebrating their individuality. When the pressure mounts and 130 dogs compete for 20 spots, she doesn't add stress. Instead, she becomes her dog's safe space.Trust, not force. Not "do it my way," but simply: "you do you." Key Topics:Mental Management Under Championship Pressure (01:40)The "You Do You" Philosophy in Action (10:00)Building Confidence vs. Creating Pressure (16:31)Training Two Opposite Dogs Successfully (23:09)Walking the Path Less Traveled Alone (26:02)About Petra's Podcast and Other Resources (40:14)Petra's Message to the Next Generation of Dog Trainers (47:38) Resources:Petra Ford on FENZIPetra Ford on FacebookPetra's podcast, Canine ConnectionWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer AcademyK9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Text Me Your QuestionsIn this episode of Dog Training Today, certified canine behaviorist Will Bangura, M.S., CAB-ICB, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, FFCP, tackles one of the most common—and consequential—mistakes pet parents make when attempting behavior modification: working with their dog above threshold. Whether you're addressing fear-based reactivity, anxiety around people or dogs, or noise sensitivities like fireworks and thunderstorms, the success of counter conditioning and desensitization hinges on one critical factor—your dog must be emotionally below threshold. Will breaks down exactly what "threshold" means in practical, observable terms, and why too many pet parents unknowingly push their dogs into mild, moderate, or even severe stress while trying to change emotional responses. This episode serves as a reality check and a science-based guide to getting it right. You'll learn:Why starting too close to a visual or auditory trigger can completely derail counter conditioning effortsThe difference between being "physically calm" and "emotionally below threshold"How to recognize subtle, hard-to-read canine body language signals that indicate discomfort or stress—well before overt reactivity surfacesHow to establish safe training distances that allow for true learning and emotional reappraisal to occurWhy early intervention and incremental exposure are essential, especially with noise-based phobias like fireworksPractical 4th of July safety tips for keeping your dog secure, calm, and protected before, during, and after fireworks beginWhen to consult with your veterinarian about the use of anti-anxiety medications or natural calming aids to support behavioral progressWill also explores the neurobiology of fear and stress responses in dogs, offering a clear explanation of how amygdala-driven reactivity undermines learning when a dog is flooded, and why the emotional safety zone is where meaningful behavior change takes place.Whether you're a pet parent working through fear-based issues or a professional looking to sharpen your desensitization protocols, this episode offers grounded, science-backed advice you can put into practice immediately. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    I set out to do a podcast episode explaining why I choose not to use an electric collar with my dogs and with my students' dogs. It sent me down a spiral of research and careful consideration. So, after nearly 40 hours reviewing videos from trainers who use e-collars, I'm sharing observations about the wide spectrum of electric collar use in the training world. From excellent conditioning protocols to concerning misuse, what I discovered may surprise both those who use shock collars and those who don't.   In this episode, you'll hear:   • About hours spent watching videos of training with electric collars. • The types of electric devices available for dog training. • About the growing e-collar market in North America. • My thoughts about bans on dog training tools. • About the possibilities of learning from each other. • My observations on the use of shock collars. • The question of dopamine and what's really being reinforced for the trainer. • Why all dogs need solid training foundations and layered learning. • How reducing the divide in dog training helps us all.   Resources:   1.
