Amber Quann joined me in the studio this week to share her business journey, which started at the age of 13 after she'd built notoriety since she was 10 by winning many local and regional competitions in the 4 H community for her dog training skills! Several neighbors and family friends got puppies around the same time, and so Amber started group training lessons in her front yard! She's been training dogs ever since, eventually founding Summit Dog Training 9 years ago - and in the last few years she's scaled the business, built a training team with specialization, and recently moved to a larger location with property! We talk a lot about Tucker in this one - my 11-year-old Schnocker - and Amber shares abundantly with me and our listeners about how dogs (and people) think and learn, and especially about how to create better behavior for your dog - even as a self-implementor. Don't teach your dog not to bark when there's a knock on the door, for example - that's really hard. Instead, teach them to go sit on their sleeping pad and be ready for an introduction. Give them something to do - not something not to do. A propellant to Summit's recent growth has been her “Drink with Your Dog” training program, which brought Amber to national attention - DWYD is a program centered around creating dog-friendly breweries, and brewery friendly dogs. The growth of the business has required Amber to spend less time training dogs, and more time working on the business and becoming a capable CEO. We talk a lot about that journey, her hopes and plans for the future, and about those who've been a part of her journey so far. She's perhaps the most smarty-pants about dogs person I've ever met, you'll learn a lot and love her personality, so please enjoy my conversation with Amber Quann. As the Heroes watched on, the small skeletons grabbed and clawed at the other combatants. They clasped the legs of the unfortunate warriors, causing them to trip and fall. As they hit the ground, additional skeletons sprouted from the earth to hold them down. The arena was filled with the shouts and screams of the terrified men and women in the stands, horrified by what they were seeing. After a few moments, the other combatants had been secured to the ground. The Heroes stood up to stretch, preparing to begin their search for the corresponding tablet they required. As they loosened, they heard loud grunting and shouting from one small part of the arena. They looked over to see a large, hulking fighter crushing the small skeletons under his feet. It seems not everyone would be so easy to contain. Thanks to Brett for a great chat! When we move our dog to a variable reward schedule and we do it at the right time, it should produce more drive in our dog to perform. If we have introduced the dog to the 'NOPE' marker enough times (hundreds of times - see our online course on Marker Training) the dog will think 'Hey I deserve a reward but I didn't get one, I must have done something wrong so I'll try harder next time'. Then the following behaviors it gets rewarded 3 or 4 times, then no reward again. The goal of a variable reward system is to develop a training module where the dog never knows when or how many rewards it's going to get for offering a behavior. Finding the right balance is your challenge. Being ready to back up your training for a while will help you figure this out. Every dog is different, that's why no one can tell you exactly how to do it for your dog. | Links mentioned: Training Dogs with Food Rewards: https://university.leerburg.com/Catalog/viewCourse/cid/206 | The Power of Training Dogs with Markers (2024 Version): https://university.leerburg.com/Catalog/viewCourse/cid/96

It may seem counterintuitive to say that we don't want to use our dog's highest-value food reward all the time. With some dogs, there may be times in teaching a behavior where that's exactly what we need to do. The same thing may happen with dogs that are transitioned to toy rewards. Let's say we have an extremely high food drive dog that gets so amped up when it knows you have steak that it's brain stops working and the steak becomes more of a distraction. So much so that we need to add pressure to calm the dog down so we can help it learn. If that ever becomes the case with your dog, then change your food rewards to a lesser value food reward, maybe kibble. Once the dog knows the behavior and once it has gone through impulse control training, you will be able to go back and use high-value rewards like steak again. At that point, the dog understands that the road to steak is to stay focused and offer the behavior we ask for. | Links mentioned: Training Dogs with Food Rewards - Version 2024 https://university.leerburg.com/Catalog/viewCourse/cid/206
There is something every new trainer needs to know. If your dog won't take food, if it's not interested in your high-value food reward, it's either: 1 - full and not hungry 2 - it's distracted 3 - it's stressed If my dog is paying attention to the screaming kids next door the dog will often find the kids more interesting than the food reward we have. If my dog is stressed, because of the environment I have chosen to train in, the dog will not take food. Look at it like this: if you are scared do you feel like eating? Probably not. If you are mad, do you feel like eating, probably not. STRESS KILLS FOOD DRIVE.| Links mentioned: Training Dogs with Food Rewards: https://university.leerburg.com/Catalog/viewCourse/cid/206

Dog training methodologies are vast. The long lead's outward appearance may seem to be a relic of training days gone by. And truth be told, for some, they wouldn't be wrong. With the invention of the e-collar and the now mainstream training approaches of utilizing classical and operant conditioning, many trainers forego the use of the long lead altogether. I'd argue that the long lead is not only relevant today but is also an essential tool in developing new trainers before they touch an e-collar. It reduces the chances of overcorrecting, promotes a connection with your dog the e-collar can't provide, and develops the timing and focus every trainer needs to maximize their dog's learning. Though a simple tool, there are a few things to consider when choosing the right long lead for you and your dog.

When we ask our dog for a hand-touch we expect the dog to touch their nose to the palm of our hand. The hand-touch becomes a fun game that our dogs love to play at home and on walks. In fact, with many dogs, the hand-touch itself becomes a reward. Once our dog becomes fluent with the hand-touch we can use it to redirect the dog away from unwanted distractions like other dogs, people, or things that make them nervous or reactive. This video came out of a new 5 hour online course from Leerburg.com titled Training Your Dog With High Value Food Rewards with Ed Frawley. | Links mentioned: Training Dogs with Food Rewards with Ed Frawley: https://university.leerburg.com/Catalog/viewCourse/cid/206
One of the benefits of learning to use food rewards in your training is you will end up with a dog that loves to train, in fact, most will challenge you to take them out to train. This is very different from what I experienced back in the 1960s and 1970s. | Links mentioned: Training Dogs with Food Rewards with Ed Frawley: https://university.leerburg.com/Catalog/viewCourse/cid/206

Tonight we are pleased to sit down and chat with our buddy, Carter Turner, from Mossy Pond Retrievers. Carter has been working with dogs since he was a kid chasing coon dogs through the woods. We begin the show learning about how he got into the dog world and all about coon hunting competitions. Then we hear how he picked up a job at Mossy Pond and did some apprentice work before being a full on dog trainer and running high level dogs all over the country. People often write in and ask how to be a dog trainer or how to start running dogs for people at these big events and well, here's how Carter did it. He started as a young man and worked hard and slowly but surely made progress. It's always cool to speak with good people like Carter who work tirelessly chasing goals. We then dig into his time in the SRS game and hear what he thinks makes a good SRS dog: marking, compliant, mature, etc.. Then we chat about his time at The Grand and then Master Nationals this year. We also hear what Carter and the fellas at Mossy Pond suggest people do when taking their dogs on their first hunt. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
