The Lucio Fulci movie that more people should be talking about may just be so weird its good? "Conquest" is one of those bizarre gems that defies logic, reason, and possibly all known laws of filmmaking. From the opening frame, you're catapulted into a world where absolutely nothing makes sense—and that's the beauty of it. The plot (if you can call it that) revolves around two warriors, Mace and Ilias, who embark on a quest to stop an evil, topless sorceress who wears a metal mask and is clearly compensating for something. Why? Who knows! The movie doesn't bother to explain, and honestly, it doesn't matter. The action scenes are a special kind of weird. Imagine slow-motion combat sequences where everyone moves like they're underwater, yet somehow, limbs are still getting chopped off left and right. The gore is gratuitous, and I mean gratuity with a capital G. There's blood spraying everywhere, heads getting smashed for no reason, and enough fake entrails to make you wonder if they bought out an entire Halloween store. The nudity? Oh, it's there—just about every 10 minutes, the film throws in a random naked person for no discernible reason other than, well, why not? If you're looking for plot relevance, you're in the wrong movie. The special effects and costumes are so corny and cheesy that you almost feel like you're watching a live-action cartoon—except way more violent. The monsters look like they were assembled out of leftover Muppets, and the villain's henchmen wear masks that make them look like rejected extras from a bad '70s sci-fi show. And the music? Imagine a synth-heavy score that somehow makes everything feel both epic and hilariously out of place, like if someone played a disco track during a gladiator battle. It's that level of weirdness. In the end, "Conquest" is like a fever dream wrapped in a bad acid trip dipped in melted cheese. It's one of those rare films where everything is so bizarrely wrong that it becomes impossibly right. If you love movies that make you question your life choices, while also making you laugh at how absurdly terrible they are, "Conquest" is your golden ticket. Enjoy the ride—you'll never forget it, no matter how hard you try.

In the heart of our communities, dogs hold a special place, not just as pets but as embodiments of love and connection. This was profoundly evident in the story of Kim Grace, owner of Grey Gums Cafe on Putty Road, and her beloved rescue dog, Shilo. Shilo was more than a pet to Kim; he was a symbol of enduring love and companionship. After the passing of her husband, John, Shilo came into Kim's life, offering comfort and a sense of presence that was deeply needed. Named after the Neil Diamond song "Shilo," a favorite of John's and poignantly played at his service, this dog represented a bridge between past memories and present healing. The impact of Shilo on Kim, and by extension on the community that frequents Grey Gums Cafe, was profound. Dogs, like Shilo, have an innate ability to bring people together, offering unconditional love and a listening ear, without judgement or expectation. They become part of our stories, our families, and our hearts. Sadly, Kim recently faced the loss of Shilo, a moment that reminds us of the precious, albeit sometimes brief, time we have with these remarkable creatures. Shilo's legacy, however, continues. It's in the way the community rallies in support, in the shared stories over coffee, and in the understanding that love, like Shilo's, leaves an indelible mark. As we remember Shilo, let's celebrate the power and love that community dogs bring into our lives. They are not just pets; they are friends, healers, and irreplaceable companions on our life's journey. Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Samantha King, a dog trainer and psychologist at Therapy Dogs Australia, challenges industry norms by advocating for a practical, role-specific approach to working dog training, contrasting with the generalised recommendations often made by her industry member organisation. Working dogs play crucial roles, such as in search and rescue, police work, or providing assistance to individuals with disabilities. These tasks require a unique blend of intelligence, physical abilities, and sensitivity. The bond between dog and handler is integral to the success of the mission. However, a one-size-fits-all training approach is inadequate. Customised training programmes are crucial for maximising the dog's potential and effectiveness in its role. Samantha's work aims to highlight the need for a more realistic and practical training approach. Samantha's frustration stems from the industry member body's failure to recognise the unique challenges and requirements of each specific role that working dogs are placed in. Their lack of flexibility and adaptability in their recommendations can hinder the dog's performance and, ultimately, the success of the mission. As we continue to explore innovative approaches in the field of working dogs, it's evident that customised and realistic training programmes are vital. Working dogs have the potential to make a significant impact in various professional settings, but this is only possible if we allow them the opportunity to reach their full potential through the right training and support. When we think of psychology, often we imagine a traditional therapy session in an office setting. However, Samantha King, a psychologist from Therapy Dogs Australia, is breaking the mold by incorporating canines into her sessions. This innovative approach, known as psychology assisted by canines, utilizes the unique bond between humans and dogs to facilitate healing and growth, especially in young children with a range of needs. Canines have an extraordinary ability to connect with humans, providing comfort and support that is often unparalleled. In a psychological setting, the presence of a dog can act as a catalyst for building rapport between the psychologist and the child. The non-judgmental and unconditional love offered by canines can create a safe and nurturing environment, promoting openness and vulnerability, which are essential for any successful therapeutic intervention. In psychology, the importance of a strong therapist-client relationship cannot be overstated. Incorporating canines into the session can significantly enhance this relationship, ultimately leading to more effective outcomes. The intuitive nature of dogs allows them to sense emotions and respond accordingly, providing an additional layer of support and understanding that can be truly transformative. Samantha King's work with Therapy Dogs Australia is a testament to the power and potential of psychology when combined with the healing presence of canines. As we continue to explore and embrace innovative approaches in psychology, the possibilities for healing and growth are boundless. Prey locking in dogs is a natural instinct deeply rooted in their ancestral heritage as hunters. When a dog locks onto an object, it means they've spotted something of interest, whether it's a squirrel, a ball, or even a moving vehicle. This behaviour is characterised by intense focus and a stiffened posture. However, it can be a source of frustration for both owners and trainers alike. Owners may find prey locking frustrating for several reasons. Firstly, it can make walking your dog a challenge as they might suddenly fixate on a target, leading to tugging and pulling on the lead. This not only causes discomfort for the owner but also poses a danger if the dog lunges towards traffic or other hazards. Additionally, redirecting a locked-in dog's attention can be quite challenging, especially if they are determined to chase their prey. Trainers, too, encounter difficulties when addressing prey locking. Teaching a dog to break their focus and respond to commands in such a heightened state of arousal can be time-consuming and demanding. It necessitates patience, consistent training, and the use of various techniques to redirect their attention towards more desirable behaviours. To better manage this instinctual response, it's important to understand that prey locking is a natural canine behaviour. Employing training methods that encourage impulse control and redirection can be highly beneficial for both owners and trainers, enabling dogs to enjoy their environment without causing frustration or safety concerns. Jealousy and envy, often used interchangeably, have distinct meanings. Jealousy is the fear of losing something we possess to someone else, while envy involves desiring something someone else has. Both emotions aren't limited to just humans. Our canine companions, too, show signs that could be interpreted as jealousy. For humans, jealousy can arise from intricate emotional scenarios, such as witnessing a loved one grow closer to someone else or professional setbacks. In dogs, the manifestations are more direct: a pet owner showering affection on another pet often leads to those unmistakable whines and nudges. However, it's worth delving deeper into canine "jealousy." Research from the University of California, San Diego, indicates that dogs might display behaviors reminiscent of jealousy when they perceive unequal treatment. Dogs, when observing their owners being affectionate toward what seemed like another pet (though it was a stuffed toy), exhibited nudges and pushes, more so than when the owner engaged with a non-social item. Yet, an alternative perspective suggests that what we label as "jealousy" in dogs might be closer to "resource guarding." Dogs, having evolved as pack animals, naturally protect scarce resources. This protective behaviour over toys, food, or even their human, could stem from a primal instinct to guard essential resources rather than from an emotional response akin to human jealousy. Humans often anthropomorphise animal behaviours, and while it might feel right to label a dog's desire for attention as "jealousy," it could just be a straightforward request for affection or the act of guarding a "resource." The dynamics between cerebral human emotions and the possibly instinctual responses of dogs is fascinating. As our discussion ranged from cultural interpretations to light-hearted anecdotes and even the portrayal of jealousy in art, one clear takeaway emerged: understanding and appropriately addressing these emotions and behaviours, whether in humans or dogs, is essential for nurturing harmonious relationships. From the bustling streets of the UK to the vast expanses of Australia, a storm is brewing that threatens to redefine the very core of dog training. XL Bullies, once pridefully paraded across parks in Britain, now face potential bans. Meanwhile, Down Under, Rottweilers, despite their loyal and loving nature, find themselves splashed across headlines, painting them in a less than flattering light. Why this sudden breed-specific attention? But, the plot thickens. The Australian Parliament, under the influence of left-wing political parties, is alight with fervent debates that extend beyond breed biases. They are launching yet another campaign against specific dog training tools, seeking to ban bite sports and aiming to introduce even more stringent restrictions on canine training methodologies. These actions aren't just administrative red tape; they are tugs at the very heartstrings of dog lovers and trainers. Every ban, every headline, and every parliamentary debate forces us to re-evaluate and adapt our approach. But at what cost? As we navigate these turbulent times, the overarching question remains: How will these breed battles and political pressures reshape the landscape of dog training, and more importantly, our relationship with our furry friends? After the rousing discussion sparked by our previous episode, "Things Dog Trainers Hate to Hear," it's clear that the conversation between pet owners and dog trainers is far more nuanced than can be captured by a list of frustrating phrases. The topic was so well-received that we decided to take it a step further in our newest podcast episode, where we delve into how the dynamic between pet owners and trainers is evolving in contemporary society. Social media platforms, with their host of cute dog videos and quick 'tips and tricks,' can both help and hinder the pet owner-trainer relationship. On the one hand, they serve as platforms for trainers to share valuable insights and for pet owners to learn and share. On the other, they can perpetuate harmful myths and encourage unprofessional training techniques, creating a host of challenges for certified trainers to untangle later on. As we've discussed in our latest podcast episode, the relationship between pet owners and dog trainers is constantly evolving. Through this evolution, it's important to go beyond debunking frustrating phrases or myths and instead focus on the new ways that training methods and pet owner expectations are adapting to the changing landscape. Through understanding these shifts, we can better facilitate a rewarding experience for both dogs and their humans. A recent Facebook post ignited a fascinating discussion around the relationship between pet owners and dog trainers. The user asked friends to share things that dog trainers hate to hear. Not surprisingly, the thread garnered over 200 comments, full of humour and earnest concerns alike. We found the conversation so compelling that we even discussed it in our most recent podcast episode. Initially, one phrase that dog trainers often hate to hear is, "I've tried everything." This comment perpetuates a myth that undermines the essence of dog training. Experts in the field hate hearing this because it not only misguides pet owners into believing there's no answers. Secondly, a sentiment that dog trainers equally hate is, "Isn't he too old to be trained?" This notion incorrectly implies that age is an insurmountable barrier to learning new tricks or behaviours. Dog trainers hate this misconception because it leads many pet owners to miss out on an opportunity for improvement, which is often entirely possible regardless of a dog's age. Furthermore, on the lighter side of things, a phrase that dog trainers also hate but find amusing is, "My dog doesn't need training; he's just 'free-spirited'." While this comment elicits chuckles, dog trainers hate that it minimizes the value of their work. A 'free-spirited' dog might seem cute, but lack of training can compromise both the dog's and owner's well-being. In conclusion, the thread wasn't just a source of entertainment; it was a treasure trove of insights into the myths and stereotypes that dog trainers hate encountering. These professionals aren't merely 'canine whisperers'; they serve as vital educators who strive to improve the relationship between humans and their pets. Undoubtedly, the very essence of dog training is encapsulated in a single, albeit often elusive, concept: the moment. Interestingly, this pivotal lesson came into sharp focus for many of us while sharing space with the incomparable Michael Ellis. A master in his field, Michael exemplifies the art of being fully "in the moment." When you find yourself fortunate enough to be immersed in his dynamic presence, you can't help but feel the magnetic allure of present awareness. Importantly, this is not merely a tactical approach, but rather, it evolves into a deeply-lived philosophy. Further emphasising this, being fully present transcends being just a training technique; it emerges as a transformative dogma that enriches the lives of dogs, trainers, and clients alike. During training sessions with Michael, you quickly observes a crucial distinction: he's not simply instructing the human or the dog. Instead, he is communicating, connecting, and deeply understanding on an impressively intuitive level. This potent engagement with the present moment empowers him to discern even the most subtle cues in a dog's behaviour. Having the week with Michael and our good friend Alex Edwards has been an incredible moment which way beyond us has been grateful for. Sorting through life's chaos is akin to training an unpredictable dog; both require mastery over the when, why, and how. When: Just as we sort our life decisions at opportune moments, we must also discern when to guide our dogs. Proper timing in both ensures success. Why: Understanding our motivations and those of our dogs is key. Is your dog's barking due to anxiety, boredom, or health? Similarly, sorting the reasons behind our feelings adds depth to our growth. How: Our strategies in life, like in dog training, need personalisation. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn't always work. In essence, sorting our way through life and dog training is more than exerting control. It's about mutual growth, understanding, and patience. Our dogs serve not just as pets but as teachers, urging us to be present, adaptable, and curious.Check out this episode where we asked, 'Where are we going'? Glenn, Pat, and Cameron Ford came together to take a hard look at the existing 'system' that governs many dog training practices. This meeting ignited an important discussion, probing into long-standing practices that have become ubiquitous within the industry. We raised concerns over the rigid thinking that is prevalent in the field. This often manifests as a cult-like dedication to a single methodology, stunting the growth of new ideas and innovation. Our conversation highlighted how this narrow-minded approach creates an environment where trainers aggressively defend their chosen 'system', often to the detriment of their professional development. In an act akin to religious fervour, these individuals quickly reject or even openly attack novel ideas and methodologies. Such behaviour creates an unfriendly atmosphere that prevents the adoption of emerging research and innovative techniques that could potentially revolutionize dog training practices. Against this backdrop, we proposed a solution rooted in openness and flexibility. Rather than clinging tightly to one specific approach, we suggest trainers should continually seek knowledge from a wide array of methods. By promoting a culture of open dialogue and intellectual curiosity, we believe an efficient, multifaceted 'system' could emerge in dog training. Furthermore, we emphasised the need to challenge and reassess the industry's deeply entrenched beliefs. They argued that a 'system' should be adaptable and dynamic, capable of evolving with new discoveries in animal behaviour and learning. For the field to truly progress, we all stressed the importance of breaking free from the rigid constraints of some existing methods to embrace a more holistic understanding of dog training. Dog training is a blend of art and science, utilising various techniques to shape desired behaviours. One such method is negative reinforcement, encapsulated nicely in the phrase, "pressure motivates, release educates." Negative reinforcement is often misunderstood. It doesn't involve harm or punishment but utilises slight discomfort to stimulate behaviour change. In dog training, 'pressure' refers to the minimal discomfort that motivates the dog to behave differently. This could be a firm tug on the lead or a stern voice command, encouraging the dog to respond to a certain cue. The 'release' part, equally crucial, involves removing the 'pressure' as soon as the dog exhibits the desired behaviour. The release is where the true learning occurs. It's the dog's 'Aha!' moment, realising that complying with the command will eliminate the discomfort. This ebb and flow of pressure and release helps form associations and adjust behaviours, proving to be a powerful tool in any dog trainer's arsenal. In essence, the 'pressure motivates, release educates' mantra underscores the art of teaching dogs using negative reinforcement. It's about fostering a learning environment that drives behavioural change, proving that even pressure, when properly applied, can result in a well-trained, happier dog. check out another episode we did on incompatible behaviour and positive punishment Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Nothing beats a hearty chat with Jason Firmin, the main man at Eizweck Dogquip, and his son Ryan, especially after their whirlwind European tour. Now, this wasn't your typical sightseeing trip. Nope, the Firmins had a mission - to immerse Ryan into the exciting world of dog sports decoy. Europe's got some seriously talented decoys, and it was in this lively backdrop that Ryan received his crash course. Jason couldn't stop beaming as he spoke of his son's meteoric rise in the decoy scene. Ryan was all grins, too, as he regaled us with tales of training alongside Europe's decoy cream of the crop. His eyes sparkled as he recounted his 'unparalleled' experience, a real game-changer for his decoy journey. Now, we're a cheeky lot, so the chat wasn't all shop talk. We found time for a bit of a laugh, ribbing each other and adding a dash of fun to our dog sports discourse. Let's just say, we know how to balance the serious with the downright silly! Their European sojourn has undoubtedly injected a fresh dose of enthusiasm for dog sports and decoy in particular. The Firmins' story is a delightful reminder of how a spirited approach to learning (and a pinch of mischief) can create unforgettable experiences. Here's to more decoy escapades with Ryan on the frontline! we've had other episode about decoys here in Episode 197 Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? In Australia, introducing a four-legged friend to the work site has unlocked a unique charm and improved productivity. In an environment often characterized by stress and deadlines, a tail-wagging canine offers a magical and unanticipated boost. The presence of a dog at a work site serves as a powerful stress reliever. Their capacity to provide unconditional love, coupled with their humorous antics, tends to lighten the work atmosphere, fostering a more relaxed, happier, and ultimately more productive workforce. Not just confined to offices, dogs are becoming common in construction sites, mines, and farms across Australia. Despite the challenging conditions, these loyal companions display remarkable adaptability. Their presence creates an emotional anchor, promoting camaraderie and a sense of team cohesion, essential in such settings. Interestingly, dogs also contribute to safety. They're highly perceptive, often alerting their human colleagues to dangers unseen or unheard. This remarkable canine trait adds an unexpected layer of protection in these environments. Incorporating dogs into work sites across Australia is undeniably magical. It breaks down barriers, fosters emotional well-being, and enhances productivity. And at the end of the day, who doesn't enjoy a friendly bark or a wagging tail to lighten up their day? What do you want to do with your dog? "Punished by Rewards" by Alfie Kohn delves into the concept of intrinsic motivation, suggesting that rewards can actually be counter-productive, undermining our inherent drive to learn and explore. While primarily focused on humans, this compelling theory has implications for dog training. Traditionally, reward-based training has been a staple in teaching our canine companions. But should we be wary of over-relying on treats and praise? This question leads us back to the concept of intrinsic motivation. It's undeniable that dogs possess inherent drives, such as the drive to explore their environment or to play. These intrinsic drives can and should be harnessed in training. Shifting our focus to nurturing these natural instincts, rather than overwhelming our dogs with extrinsic rewards, could result in a more engaging and satisfying learning experience. This approach encourages dogs to participate not just for the promise of a treat but due to an intrinsic desire to engage, learn, and please. "Punished by Rewards" nudges us to reconsider the balance between extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation in dog training. By placing emphasis on the latter, we can tap into our dogs' natural instincts, leading to more effective and enriching training outcomes. In this fascinating episode, we delve deeper into the dynamic world of dog clubs, sharing our rich experiences that encompass managing, operating, and engaging with the colourful tapestry of individuals who breathe life into these clubs. We bring to light both the inspiring stories of those who make the journey truly rewarding, as well as the challenging experiences that test our resilience and passion. As we continue, we explore an intriguing aspect of dog training: sign tracking. This behavioural phenomenon, when understood and leveraged correctly, can significantly enrich your training approach. However, a lack of awareness about sign tracking can inadvertently lead to complications. For instance, dogs might develop an unintended fixation on a bag of treats rather than the commands, causing potential distractions during training sessions. On the flip side, harnessing the power of sign tracking can expedite and solidify the learning process by associating additional cues with rewards, thereby strengthening the dog's conditioned response. Lastly, we lighten the mood with an engaging conversation about teaching and learning within the esteemed domain of dog training. Join us as we navigate the captivating landscape of imparting and acquiring knowledge, yet again reaffirming our dedication to the fascinating industry of dog training. Bull breeds, children and best case versus Armageddon are once again the topics of discussion that came from surveys within our on-line discussion group.Bull breeds are well-known for their strength, stamina, and loyalty, but their reputation often suffers due to negative portrayals in the media. However, in a loving environment, breeds like the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier can be fantastic family pets, particularly when socialised with children early and properly. Children's behaviour plays a pivotal role in this dynamic. It's essential to teach them to respect dogs' boundaries, avoiding aggressive or rough play. In the ideal scenario, a respectful, loving relationship is established, reinforcing positive behaviours both in children and dogs. To conclude, we were asked about best case scenarios in the dog industry versus all out Armageddon. Dog training is a journey, underscored by significant transitions through distinct learning phases, each showcasing your dog's growth and understanding. Initially, in the Introduction and teaching phase, your dog doesn't understand the expected behaviour. However, as they begin to recognise the task or command, they naturally transition into the Learning and Association phase. This shift becomes noticeable as your dog starts associating your command with the corresponding action, albeit inconsistently. For example, when you say "sit," they might occasionally comply. Gradually, your dog moves into the Refinement and Consistency stage, which is another crucial transition. Here, your dog's understanding deepens, characterised by improved accuracy and more consistent responses. Now, when you say "sit," they will more frequently and correctly respond to your command, indicating a clear grasp of the association between the command and the action. Finally, the most rewarding transition occurs, leading your dog into the Proofing phase. At this point, your dog instinctively responds to your command, indicating that it has become second nature. When you say "sit," they immediately and correctly respond, regardless of the environment or distractions, signalling a successful transition to mastery. These transitions form the crux of dog training. Your patience, understanding, and consistent reinforcement will guide these transitions, facilitating your dog's progression from one phase to the next. Recognising and appreciating these subtle shifts can significantly enhance your effectiveness as a trainer and deepen the bond with your dog. And of course, we took a bee line into other territories of punishment and other topics that people avoid as it doesn't appease their audience. In our latest episode, we welcome back Chad Mackin to join us for an insightful discussion on the dog training industry. The conversation focused on Chad's experiences, concerns, and aspirations for the world of dog training, emphasising the importance of better language in the industry. Chad expressed his concerns about the widespread issue of substandard dog training practices being shared on social media platforms such as, Facebook. He highlighted how these methods not only affect the welfare of dogs and their owners but also have a significant impact on his own state of mind. In a world where poorly executed techniques are often celebrated, we aim to be a change for the industry through better language and practices. To tackle these challenges, Chad has dedicated himself to developing and promoting better lead pressure training models. These models focus on a more effective, compassionate, and ethically sound approach to dog training whilst maintaining a high standard of care for our canine companions. Pat and Glenn chimed in during the discussion, reiterating the importance of refining industry language to foster better communication and understanding amongst trainers and pet owners. Have you ever talked to your pets as if they were human beings? If you have, you might have been accused of being anthropomorphic. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics, emotions, and behaviours to non-human entities such as animals, objects, or even natural phenomena. Recently, Pat asked Glenn if he was being anthropomorphic when he was observing behaviours from his dogs, Remco and Valerie. While dogs do feel emotions like joy and fear, they might not necessarily express them in the same way as humans. Dogs might wag their tails when they're happy, but they might also wag their tails when they're nervous or excited. It's important to understand and respect the way that animals communicate. However, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk to our pets or treat them with kindness and respect. Building a strong bond with our pets requires communication and empathy. It's important to observe and understand their behaviours and needs, and to respond to them appropriately. Whether or not we're being anthropomorphic, it's always a good idea to treat our pets like valued members of our family. Here's an episode from the archives that you will enjoy. Proper grip development through good techniques in tug and rag work can help improve a dog's performance, prevent injuries, and increase their confidence and drive. In bite sports, such as PSA, Schutzhund, IPO, and French Ring, dogs are trained to bite and hold onto various objects, including sleeves, bite suits, and hidden sleeves. To prepare them for these tasks, trainers use tug and rag work to help develop their grip strength, proper bite technique, and overall confidence. It's important to use appropriate equipment when engaging in tug and rag work with a dog training for bite sports. Specifically designed bite tugs and rag toys that mimic the texture and feel of the equipment used in bite sports should be used. This helps the dog learn how to properly grip and hold onto the equipment, while also protecting their teeth from damage. Proper technique during tug and rag work is also essential for developing a dog's grip strength and technique. Trainers should let the dog win and avoid forcefully taking the toy away, as this can create negative associations with biting and decrease the dog's drive. Varying the types of games and toys used in training can also help develop a well-rounded grip.
