The swaddle has been a trusted technique for sleep-deprived parents to calm and comfort their newborn babies for generations. It's a known fact that proper swaddling promotes the best newborn baby sleep possible. This is because wrapping infants snugly in a swaddle blanket mimics the feeling of being in the womb and helps prevent your baby's startle reflex. As your baby graduates that newborn stage, there comes a time when transitioning them out of the swaddle becomes necessary. This process can be a bit challenging, as it involves introducing new sleep associations that allow your baby more freedom of movement. But with patience, a gradual approach, the correct sleep gear, and the right strategies, you can make the transition a smooth and successful one.In this blog post and podcast episode, I explore in-depth the steps and techniques to help you transition your baby out of the swaddle, ensuring a comfortable and safe sleep environment for your little one. Traditional behavioural sleep training is not for every parent. Maybe you're not ready to make such big changes to your little one's sleep habits. Perhaps your baby's cries are too overwhelming to listen to, even if you're in the baby's room supporting him. Maybe you have a young baby who isn't old enough for sleep training. Or maybe you were blessed with an amazing sleeper who doesn't need sleep training. This might be where you try patting your baby to sleep, also known as the shush pat method. It's a well-known fact about baby and toddler sleep that overtiredness is the enemy as a well-known sleep stealer. However, it can be quite difficult sometimes to figure out what type of sleep schedule your little one needs to avoid overtiredness to begin with. A well-known piece of advice tells parents to look out for their little one's "sleepy cues", which are supposed to let them know when they're getting tired. The truth is that I DON'T agree with this advice. In this episode of the My Sleeping Baby podcast, I explain more specifically what "sleepy cues" refer to, why I don't recommend relying on them to help you figure out when your little one needs to sleep, and how I recommend you approach your little one's sleep schedule instead.Get Your Free Sleep Chart Here - https://mysleepingbaby.ac-page.com/sleep-chart-landing-page
If you are a parent of a newborn baby, sleep is probably something you're NOT getting much of. Afterall, newborns require frequent feeds, diaper changes, and nurturing as they transition to the outside world, all of which can get in the way of proper stretches of sleep for you. And that's exhausting! This is where discussions around sleep training often come in as a way to help create better sleep habits. But the reality is that sleep training is NOT age appropriate for newborn babies. In this podcast episode, I discuss why newborns can't be sleep trained. But most importantly, I go through my top 6 pieces of advice for maximizing sleep in the newborn stage without any sleep training.
