"We all walk around in our little cultural bubble, and sometimes, without realizing it, that bubble shapes how we show up in the playroom." – Dr. Carmen Cubillo In this thought-provoking episode, Lisa sits down with Dr. Carmen Cubillo, a clinical psychologist, Registered Play Therapist, and cultural advocate based in Australia, for an essential conversation about culture—our own, our clients', and how both shape the therapeutic relationship. Together, Lisa and Carmen dive into: ✨ The therapist's cultural lens: How our personal cultural background influences the way we show up in the playroom and why it's crucial to reflect on it. ✨ Layers of cultural curiosity: Beyond heritage, how systemic and societal influences shape our clients' experiences and why we must stay open and adaptable. ✨ Cultural safety in therapy: What it means to be a culturally safe therapist and how unconscious biases can create barriers to connection. ✨ The importance of rupture and repair: Why acknowledging cultural missteps—rather than avoiding them—deepens trust and strengthens relationships. ✨ Connecting to the land: How understanding the cultural history of where you live can ground your practice and help you become more attuned to the experiences of the children and families you work with. This episode is an invitation to lean into cultural awareness, embrace the discomfort of learning, and grow into more attuned and connected therapists. With Carmen's wisdom, vulnerability, and deep experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, this conversation will challenge, inspire, and expand your perspective.

This week, Liz Gray, LCSW, RPT, shares her birth story in which she explores the complex feelings she has about the OB at her birth, who provided physically good medical care but whose language and attitude was extremely harmful. Her story includes navigating a lack of trauma-informed care during infertility treatment, a birth center to hospital birth transfer, an unplanned a cesarean birth, and a misdiagnosis of "failure to thrive" for her baby by her first pediatrician. A thread that weaves throughout her story is the impact of our words and how not being trauma-informed can add layers of trauma to what are already challenging prenatal, childbirth, and postpartum experiences, especially for survivors of trauma. To start our conversation, Liz shares the words of Kayleigh Summers, LCSW, PMH-C, from her Instagram (@thebirthtrauma_mama), who is also host of The Birth Trauma Mama Podcast. On the Resilient Birth podcast, Justine and Sarah explore the impact of trauma in the perinatal period. Through an inspirational quote that drives the weekly content, Justine and Sarah explore various trauma areas with vulnerability and compassion that support birthing people and birth professionals. Each week, listeners leave with takeaways to utilize in their lives and/or clients. Justine and Sarah hold the stories they share with honor and respect with the hope to impart knowledge, increase understanding, and bear witness to this challenging topic. Sarah is a licensed mental health counselor, educator, and mom of three. She walks with a story of trauma from before and as a result of her perinatal experience. Justine supports survivors of trauma through perinatal coaching and childbirth education. As well as being a mother of three, she holds a Ph.D. on representations of consent and sexual violence. Today, Katie Fischer, LPC-S, RPT, joins me on the podcast and we have an excellent conversation surrounding this big topic of our children and anxiety. There is a lot to process when it comes to understanding the world around us, add anxiety to the mix and it can become paralyzing. Now, think about how we might handle that understanding with decades less of experience. Our little humans have so much to learn, helping provide them with support and coping strategies can help make some of that learning a little smoother. Katie knocks it out of the park teaching us about understanding basic needs, how to recognize signs of that our children might be struggling and gives us so many tips on how to equip them when they are in a moment of anxiety. I felt so encouraged and seen as we talked through questions surrounding this topic. I know I will be referring to this information again and again. Please listen, like, and leave a review as we work to continue to build awareness that it's ok to not be ok, but let's not stay there. I know a lot of us are living in survival mode at the moment, but does it have to be that way? There will always be moments where we are just surviving, but learning how to care for our body's mental, social, nutritional, and physical health is how we transition from just surviving to thriving. The fact that you have made your way here is HUGE! It means that you have taken the first step to seeking the help your child needs. Finding your way to a healthy, happy child is a journey that takes one step at a time. Hello! My name is Katie Fischer and I am the owner of Stay & Play Counseling, LLC. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Play Therapist who is passionate about using the power of play to help children through difficult times. I bring over 20 years of experience working with children to my private practice including many years of work in the school setting as an elementary school teacher and school counselor, as well as a therapist in an early childhood setting.I work primarily with children ages 3-12 and their families to navigate challenging circumstances in their lives including trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral problems, school-related struggles, death and loss, divorce, peer/sibling conflict, and anger management. Each child deserves a personal, unique approach to achieving their best self and I believe Play Therapy is the answer! Play Therapy allows the child to process these struggles through a non-judgemental, play-based approach with a safe, trusting adult. Through Play Therapy, children learn ways to improve communication skills, express feelings appropriately, gain problem solving skills, and develop better relational skills. I value a strong relationship with my client, as well as their caregivers and communication between the family and therapist.Finding the right person to work with your child can be a daunting process and I am so glad you found Stay & Play! Please reach out to me with any questions you may have or to learn more about my practice.

Play is to the child what talk is to the adult. Play therapy is a medium for expressing feelings, exploring relationships, describing experiences, disclosing wishes, and nurturing self-fulfillment. Children express themselves and their needs, relive their past, and connect with others through play. The use of toys enables children to transfer anxieties, fears, fantasies, and guilt to objects rather than people. In the process, children are safe from their own feelings and reactions because play enables children to distance themselves from traumatic events and experiences. In this podcast Tammy Schamuhn interviews Lisa Dion, Clinician, Registered Play Therapist, Co-Founder of Synergetic Play Therapy. We take a deep dive into what play therapy looks like, how it creates long-lasting changes in children, and where you can get appropriate training should you want to explore this medium in your clinical work. In this episode you will learn the following: Childhood development starts in the womb and is critically important until age 2 to set the foundation for who your baby can possibly be. Your baby is communicating with you through every sound they make. The parents' role is to communicate back. The games parents play with their newborns each have a learning function to them. It's important that parents discuss what is priority to them in how they raise their child before having children. Consistency provides a safe and secure environment for children. Each parent's daily routine is important when there is co-parenting in two households due to divorce. Don't Compete! Each co-parent is different and each co-parent has value in what they can provide to their children. The Oliiki app is designed to create daily interactions with children up to 24 months old that explain the developmental skill the baby is learning. Oliiki is grounded in science. UCL Institute of Education carried out a randomised controlled trial on the Oliiki app and found that parents using the Oliiki app after only 4 weeks had higher parental self-efficacy, (more confident in their parenting) compared to the active control trial. This is significant because high parental self-efficacy is connected with low post-natal depression, low infant mental health issues and high home learning environments. #coparenting #parenting #education #play #communication #divorce #podcast #divorcepodcast #amicabledivorce #prenatalcommunication #childhooddevelopment #Oliikiapp #therapy #consistency #newborns #familytherapy @ClareStead @JenJackson About Clare Stead Clare Stead, Creator and Founder of the Oliiki app is an e-Learning specialist, Education researcher and primary teacher. Listen to this episode of Whinypaluza, with Dr. Sheryl Ziegler about how to discuss sensitive or scary topics with your kids, including current events like politics and war. Here is what to expect on this week's show: Start your conversation by asking your child what they know about the subject, to get a starting point. Use open-ended questions. Understanding the kinds of information your children are exposed to in the age of social media. Open up the conversation by asking follow-up questions and providing facts so they can come up with their own opinions. Meet them where they are at- age-appropriate conversations. The parent is the most influential figure in kids' lives up until about the age of 15. It is ok to share opinions with your kid but keep the dialogue open. Understanding shifting narratives as current events progress. The conversations will be ongoing. How to avoid over-sharing! Fight, Flight, or Freeze plays a role. It is ok to revisit a conversation and admit you were wrong about something, or to admit you don't know something. Listen more than you talk and slow the conversation down. Understand your personal conversational strengths and weaknesses and don't be afraid to enlist someone else who may be able to better discuss the subject Ask your child where they are getting their information from and what platforms and people are influencing them. Helping your child do something with the feelings they have around what they are seeing. In this episode, we're talking about a topic that we've never discussed, but is such an important topic to our work as play therapists. And that is dissociation. To have this discussion, Lisa has with her the fabulous Annie Monaco. Annie is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Registered Play Therapist, and faculty member of the Child Trauma Institute. With over 20 years of experience, Annie is a global trainer and has a specialty in EMDR Therapy with children and teens, and advanced training in attachment and dissociation in children especially with aggressive and hostile parts of self - she's the perfect person to learn more about this topic! Here's what you'll learn in this episode: A usable definition of dissociation beyond the textbook to really get a sense for how it shows up in our client sessions; How dissociation reflects the child's inside personal struggles and what it looks like; Understanding dissociation connected to complex or developmental trauma; How to help a child, parent, and even us as the therapist have compassion for all of the parts of the child (...a critical part of a child's treatment process); Activities and strategies to support children in exploring all of their parts of themselves and facilitate a path to healing. Also, Annie shares a great question that you can ask children to really begin to understand the parts of themselves. You'll definitely want to have this question in your play therapy toolbox! Enjoy this conversation that will take you beyond textbook understanding of dissociation and demystify what dissociation looks like for our clients (.... and even for ourselves)! Many women have these wonderful ideas about how they will be as a parent. But oftentimes, once they become parents, they become lost in doing and being everything for the child and don't take the time to fill their own cup. In the United States especially, mothers are expected to give every ounce of their being to their children and to bounce back without adequate support after having a baby. When mothers are completely selfless, it can have a negative effect on both the mother and the children. If you feel like you are giving your everything to your children and like you are completely depleted but aren't sure how to serve you and your child, Dr. Sam is sharing some great information about finding balance in motherhood. Dr Sam is a Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist, specializing in working with children and parents. Dr Sam Casey created the Play Prescription® method to teach parents and professionals a holistic and practical approach to play therapy. In today's episode, we are talking about what a selfless mother is, how it can affect children in the short and long term, and how to find balance in motherhood. Dr. Sam and I are also talking about play based strategies that you can incorporate into your daily routine with your children. In this episode, we discuss: What Dr. Sam's beliefs are about motherhood and how they shifted once she became a mother What a selfless mother is How children are affected in the short and long term when a mother is very selfless Is free independent play, or playing with a parent better for children? Carolina Allen and Dana Robb visit with leaders from the Houston WAVE, Nikki Brown and America Ririe, discussing February's tenet, “We are each unique and innately worthy of respect” and their many impactful projects. “If I had one goal in life, it would be to debunk this idea that you have to prove your worth, that you have to have more and be more or do more than someone else to be able to show your value, because that just really isn't true. We each have innate worth.” - Dana Robb “…America had this idea, and had this unique perspective on it, and she was able to move it forward in a way that only she would have done and anyone else would have said, ‘Oh, gosh we can't do this right now,” but she understood the vision and she kind of allowed herself to be an instrument, to be a light for others because she was willing to move it forward.” - Nikki Brown “I think that sometimes in our lives, like, the things that are our greatest hurdles become our greatest triumphs.” - Carolina Allen “We always talk about good acts rippling outward, and I think this is such a great example of that.” - Carolina Allen “I think you just take a step forward and the pieces come together … As we move forward, we've found everybody puts in a little drop and it really does collect and move forward.” - Nikki Brown “With each of our unique backgrounds … just everyone's unique talents and abilities came together and made it happen.” - America Ririe “We create so much more when we work together as a team and we all have something specific to contribute.” - Dana Robb “The exciting thing to me is the fact that everywhere around the world there are women with unique talents and strengths and that the combination of all of those within, like, these local WAVEs all over the world creates something significant, and then all together, all of us are creating something really, really profound.” - Carolina Allen “We've been given those talents for a reason, and if you're using them for what they're intended, you should never downplay them or apologize for them, you should use that strength to lift others up as well.” - America Ririe “I am becoming better at recognizing and using my strengths as I more proactively acknowledge and … support other people in their strengths.” - Nikki Brown “I think in part when we are treating other people as though they are enough and acknowledging that, then we are literally changing those messages that we're sending ourselves … the way our brain operates, the more that we think certain messages, the more that we are believing it and kind of subscribing to that.” - Nikki Brown “I think, to me, that's ultimately what we're trying to do, is allow others to share who they are, and we accept them as they are.” - Nikki Brown Nikki Brown says her greatest joy comes from being a wife of 18 years and a mother of 6 kids! She also loves serving within her faith community. She works as a therapist and recently completed the process to become a Registered Play Therapist. She loves learning, running, yoga, and being outdoors. America Ririe is a stay at home mother of six. She lives with her family in Houston, Texas and has enjoyed being a part of the Big Ocean Women Houston WAVE. She works closely with Nikki Brown (President) and other local members, to raise awareness, advocate and bring change about various causes throughout the community. Big Ocean Women has become the catalyst in bribing about real change and a force for good. Carolina Allen is the founder and leader of Big Ocean Women, the international maternal feminist organization representing perspectives of faith, family, and motherhood throughout civil society. Carolina holds a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Utah with an emphasis in cultural religions and philosophy of science. Her inspirational and philosophical work has been presented at various international U.N. conferences. She is a native of Brazil, and a fluent trilingual. If so, join us for a talk with Katie Lear, who is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina and is a Registered Drama Therapist and Registered Play Therapist.Katie will offer some information about why she is hesitant to treat Eating Disorders, and Tracy will offer some resources for Katie and all therapists to calm any chaos they might have about treating individuals who struggle with Eating Disorders. Katie combines research-based coping skills with creative play to help tween girls live better lives with anxiety and OCD. She uses Dungeons and Dragons as part of her therapy with children, and when she's not counseling, you can find her playing Dungeons & Dragons with middle schoolers through her sister business, Young Dragonslayers.I. Intro – Tell us about yourself and how you got started doing the work you do. II. Oh…and what about D&D?III. Let's talk about Eating Disorders, and the reasons why you hesitate to treat individuals who struggle with food, eating and body image. IV. Katie's Fears about treating Eating DisordersFears about practicing outside of my scopeA lack of knowledge: we covered eating disorders for less than one class period in my graduate program's abnormal psych class. We were essentially told "Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental health diagnosis" and not much else.A fear of unintentionally causing physical harm to a clientA sense of pressure (or perceived pressure) from the therapist community that treating ED requires extensive additional training. (Say more about this, Katie)A lack of general awareness. In my experience disordered eating is rarely included in case vignettes, roleplays, licensure exams, or other ways that therapists train. It feels as though the message I've gotten is "this is not for you."V. Tour of the website at https://www.katielear.com/VI. In this episode, Emily tells her favorite mistake story about setting up a child care center that was intended to attend to mental health needs — but the phone rang off the hook with people wanting and needing typical day care services. Why did she close the door to that program and how did that open the door to other possibilities? How did Emily manage to keep this in the realm of a small mistake that wasn't catastrophically expensive? We also talk about questions and topics including: Tell us what inspired you to write the book? Again, the title is Henry Knows Best!: A Story About Learning From Mistakes and Listening to Others Oppositional Defiance Disorder vs just liking to say no? How many kids are like Henry? The consequences of always knowing best – damaged relationships? Overconfidence vs. narcissism “If you think you need help, you probably need help…” Some of my previous guests have admitted that they didn't listen to experts when they should have — that they knew best… Congressman Will Hurd and Jim McCann founder of 1-800-FLOWERS. You say “I'm not a perfect person… I make mistakes… I don't expect perfection… that's not reality” — how does admitting that help clients, how does it help you work with clients? Does it help others open up to you? Having to live the values you're stating about not being perfect… Being a play therapist On your blog, you write about games that can be used to help kids with ADHD develop their attention spans.
