Today I am talking with Anna Rahe about the ways that our bodies tell us exactly what we need to find peace, fulfillment, and wellbeing both physically and beyond.  For the past 25+ years, Anna Rahe has explored a transformative and empowering relationship with fascia, helping people invest in their health, restore vitality, and heal themselves using proprietary tools she developed. As the founder and CEO of GST Body, Anna has spoken about holistic body care through fascia around the world, partnered with top athletes, surgeons, physicians, and celebrities, and has been featured in various publications, from Shape to Elle, Net-a-Porter to The Wall Street Journal. Throughout her career, Anna has had the pleasure of working with and helping over ten thousand people find lasting change by restoring their bodies and reclaiming an ageless vital life.  She is also the mom of 3 beautiful children. Today, we dive deep into the ways we can all better understand and work with our bodies to create the lives we most want… a skill that I'm pretty sure most of you were never taught. Even with my 2-decades worth of knowledge around mental health, I learned so many new things in this conversation and was, quite frankly, blown away by the science Anna shares. There are several simple and accessible ways to very quickly shift our nervous systems out of a heightened state, and you will learn them here, today. Ok–so just a quick note before we get started. A word you will hear over and over in today's conversation is Facia- for those not familiar, Fascia is a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber, and muscle in place. The tissue does more than provide internal structure; fascia has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin. When you are stressed, your fascia tightens up. This tension we feel in our bodies is often the first sign of a nervous system response and by getting more aware, we can use these early somatic experiences of body tightness to alert us and redirect us towards more calm. Today, I have the joy of talking with my friend Nadia Ali - mom, entrepreneur, educator, and advocate for health and racial equity - about the importance of discomfort. I know- who wants to feel uncomfortable? Looking for and leaning into discomfort is not something that most of us do- in fact, the majority of you listening will have been raised in families where you were taught that discomfort was bad, wrong, or a sign of weakness - you may have been taught that the purpose of life is to achieve and maintain comfort at all times. Today, Nadia and I turn that upside down. We discuss where discomfort can take us, how to tell the difference between discomfort that is dangerous and discomfort that is wise. We look at the role of discomfort in good parenting. And we address the skills necessary for moving through discomfort toward growth and potential. At this time of political instability and high stress in this country, you don't want to miss this conversation.  We are so glad that you are here. Nadia is a consultant, storyteller, facilitator, and team builder. She has over two decades of experience working with organizations at the intersection of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and systems innovation, healthcare, leadership development, and organizational culture. She helps organizations bring EDI into their operating systems, culture, and the overall fabric of the organization. Nadia's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion inspired her to launch Idea Labs. Through Idea Labs she fosters a culture of innovation, collaboration and belonging in partnership with non-profit organizations, government institutions and small businesses. Nadia uses a trauma-informed lens, therapeutic communication techniques, and adult learning principles. She draws from her lived experience and professional experience by blending a deep understanding of racial equity, various leadership frameworks, and workplace dynamics. This week's episode is an incredibly inspiring and powerful one. We are airing a coaching call I had with one of my coaching clients... and I have no doubt that you will resonate with a ton of what Carly struggles with on our call. If you are a woman and mother who identifies as high achieving, type A, all or nothing, and perfectionist thinking, and if you are struggling with anxiety, guilt, overwhelm, and burnout, this episode is for you. In our call we address limiting beliefs that hold us back, difficult emotions like anxiety, guilt, and shame, pressures in mothering, and work-life balance. The conversation is an amazing example of what happens when we are willing to ask ourselves the hard questions and challenge ourselves to think and behave differently that we have for most of our life. If the perceived “shoulds” in your life create distress, pain, and even illness for you, the process you learn today will be the start to a life changing shift. And of course, thank you to the amazing women who was brave enough to allow me to air this call as an episode here. Her story invites us to embark on a profound journey of self-discovery and fulfillment. She empowers us to embrace our true self, peel back the layers, and dive into the essence of who we are. She calls us forward with courage, urging us to cast aside the noise of the outside world and the weight of societal expectations. Today on the podcast I have the privilege of talking with Dr. Nichole Morris who is both a colleague and friend. Dr. Morris has dedicated her career as a Naturopathic Doctor to supporting women who want to become pregnant naturally, and the success rate of her patients is a tribute to her wisdom and expertise. As a Dr, she combines ancient and modern healing modalities from around the globe to strategically target the root cause of one's fertility challenges and she supports clients in becoming their most vital selves. She is also the mother of two beautiful daughters. Today, though, Dr. Morris and I are going to dive underneath it all and talk about her own journey through fertility challenges, grief, self-advocacy, and ultimate fulfillment. With truth and vulnerability, she opens up about the pain of wanting a baby desperately and struggling to conceive, the loneliness that comes from feeling so alone in this journey, and the exhausting grit and determination that was required for her to find the answers that she needed to finally become pregnant. We dive into the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual journey that she traveled to get to where she is today. Our hope through this episode is that if you or someone you know is challenged with becoming pregnant, or if you also had a fertility journey that was dark and bumpy, you walk away from this conversation knowing that you are not alone, that you are not broken, and that there is support for you. More about Dr. Morris: Dr. Nichole Morris is a renowned Naturopathic Doctor and fertility expert. Graduating from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 2018, she acquired her medical training following the completion of her MBA at the University of Michigan. As the visionary behind Morris Natural Health, a thriving brick-and-mortar practice, and the esteemed supplement company, Shop. Dr. Morris has made significant contributions to the field. In 2022, she introduced The Fertility Formula, an online group coaching program that has impacted over 150 couples worldwide who were struggling with infertility. Dr. Morris's influence extends beyond her practice and coaching program. Her dynamic presence on Instagram has cultivated an engaged community of over 73k followers, where she shares her expertise and insights. Passionate about medical freedom, she fervently advocates for individual rights. In addition, her faith as a follower of Jesus and her role as a devoted wife and homeschooling mom further enrich her life. Today's episode is a bit different and a bit longer than our typical episodes. I am taking you on a journey with me. Like, a literal journey. A couple of weeks ago, I ventured, by myself, to the south of Japan for a 6-day walk on the Kumano Kodo- I recorded myself through this adventure, and so this episode today is a peek into my inner thoughts, my experiences along the trail, and interactions with people who I met along the way. This is me, sharing me. When I am mostly all alone.   For photos from Kate's walk, click here: https://www.katekripke.com/blog/is-it-ok-to-want-alone-time-in-motherhood The Kumano Kodō is a series of ancient pilgrimage routes that crisscross the Kii Peninsula, the largest peninsula of Japan. These mountainous trails are used by pilgrims to the "Kumano Sanzan" - the Three Grand Shinto Shrines of Kumano. Shinto (which is translated as “the way of the gods”) is Japan's native belief system and predates historical records. It overlaps in part with Buddhism, but is, in itself, its own religious faith.   The focus of Shinto is Nature, and the way that it supports us, which for me is an easy place to put my spiritual self. The walk that I did took me over mountain passes, through dense forests and in and out of small Japanese villages along the way.   I am hopeful that you get, if even just a little bit, an experience of this place, it's beauty and magic, and the way in which nature reminds us all to simply be exactly who we are.   This walk got me out of my comfort zone and required me to, quite literally, walk my talk. I did, indeed, pull up my brave pants. So now, pull up a chair, and join me.   Thank you to our sponsor, the One Clock. Today, I walked straight into my recording studio from a morning walk. Not a lot of planning ahead of time for this episode… just a sense that I had to share exactly what was on my mind. Today's episode digs into the important concept of self-care in motherhood.  A term that is over-used and widely abused by commercialism. This episode also digs into the concept of “self-sacrifice” in motherhood- a term that I believe is misleading and dangerous. If you find that taking care of yourself feels difficult or selfish or that you don't have time, or if you struggle with loving yourself fully, this podcast is a must-listen for you. Kate's great-great aunt Margaret Fuller was a pioneer in suffrage, the first American female war correspondent and the author of the first major feminist book in United States. Her mother Margaret was a groundbreaking lawyer, a leading expert in mediation and arbitration in New York in the ‘70s, who kept breaking glass ceilings. Kate tells us how her mother ran herself to the ground to achieve great things and be loved and accepted, never learning to give herself acceptance and self-love. We learn from her that as women, we can do and be anything we want to be; to give our children unconditional love by accepting all of their sides; and to be gentle with yourself, and question what is worth your self-sacrifice. Kate speaks about accepting that you are enough, and don't need to be perfect; about a definition of “fierce”, which we concluded is a definition of “female”; and about anxieties of high-achieving mothers.   To learn more about Kate and her work, please visit her website. Try breathwork free: https://www.brendawinkle.com/breathe This episode features Deb Rubin in a conversation about the significance of connection and the obstacles that can hinder it. Brenda and Deb discuss fear as a barrier to connection and the need to let go of outdated survival skills. They explore the challenges of self-inquiry and the importance of self-compassion and practice. Brenda and Deb discuss the importance of validation and being seen and understood. They also touch on topics such as conflict, individuation, and making friends as adults. The conversation concludes with gratitude and appreciation for each other's insights and inspirations. Here are the takeaways... Connection and meaningful conversations are the ultimate nervous system regulator Fear blocks the connection. Fear of not being heard, fear of being judged or misunderstood. Fear puts up a layer around us that won't allow us to be present, listen and allow ourselves to be seen. Outdated survival skills hindering personal growth. These are old coping skills. The brain doesn't know the difference between real threat and perceived threat. The skills may have been necessary in earlier life but are no longer useful. Deepening the connection with oneself and others is possible only when we feel safe. If our nervous system is dysregulated or activated (in fear, stress, fight/flight), making connection might feel really difficult. Conflict is a necessary part of relationships. Conflict is essentially disagreeing. It doesn't have to be violent (and shouldn't be) but deepens relationships. The dance between individuation and society is an essential part of growing up. Our culture emphasizes blending (staying connected in social media) over individuation. What we want to do as parents is emphasize and celebrate our children's uniqueness. This is a new place for us as a society. The more authentic you are, the more able you are to connect with others. About Deb Deb Rubin a huge passion for self-discovery and growth, and love nothing more than helping others evolve in their own unique ways. As a therapist of over 20 years, She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has worked in numerous therapeutic job settings, as well as sexual health education - consciously blending the best of both Eastern and Western theories into her practice. Her experience includes working with both young adults and adults in multiple facets of life, including relationships, self-esteem, sexuality, life transitions, attachment styles, parenting, anxiety, and depression, preparing for motherhood, grief and loss, and trauma work. Kate Kripke a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Perinatal Mental Health Counselor (PMH-C) in the state of Colorado. For over 20 years, Kate has focused her work on supporting the mental health of mothers as a therapist, coach, consultant, author, and speaker. She is the Founding Director of the Postpartum Wellness Center of Boulder, the author of the book Reinventing Supermom: Support Encouragement, and Strategies For New Moms Who Feel Lost, and a co-host on the podcast Motherhood Uncut. She is also the mom of two teenage daughters. She offers group and individual mental health coaching to mothers everywhere. Here are the takeaways... Maternal mental health is supporting the mental health of mothers while they parent. When mothers get the support they need, kids do better. Sustainable mental well-being does not mean being always happy or skipping over challenges. It means that you as a mom have the capacity inside of you to stay steady when there are bumps in the road, so you can feel good, access joy, and provide unconditional love so that you can be the secure parent for your kid. There is SUCH an overlap between the mother's mental health and the child's mental health. It's your responsibility as a mom to take really good care of yourself. The systems for support are flawed. And there is still so much you can do to feel better regardless of the system. Be compassionate with yourself, your feelings are valid and make sense. The emotional workload seems to fall on the birth mom. There is a possibility you are going to feel a load of burden your co-parent may not feel. Rather than resist it and get angry, it's worth considering what it would be like to accept it and learn the tools to manage it. The starting point of mental well-being is self-awareness. From there you can set up habits and patterns that become your way of life. A really important question to ask yourself is, "What is the part I am playing in the things that aren't working?" Even the toughest emotions last 90 seconds when you let them really flow through. The key is to allow yourself to feel the feeling and detach yourself from the thinking. For adults, feelings never hurt anyone. The actions you take to avoid them or ways in which you take them out on other people can be very destructive. And very inconvienent. Little children cannot metabolize big feelings on their own. It is harmful for a small child to sit with a big emotion on their own. They learn to "hot potato" their emotions and push them away. As adults, you now have the capacity in your physiology to metabolize emotions. If you grew up in a system or a family where emotion wasn't welcomed, or no one was around to shepherd you through tough emotions, or environments that were chaotic or abusive, you may be "hot potato" emotions and may be what is making you sick as emotions. GIve yourself grace and recognize you may need to learn (and be taught) how to have big emotions. Slowing down by breathing, noticing your feet on the floor, and other grounding practices can allow you to begin to feel those emotions in safe ways while creating neural pathways in your brain, increasing your capacity to experience emotions. Detaching yourself from pain means you've also detached yourself from pleasure. There isn't a specific age of mothering (or of kids) when things get difficult. When your child hits an age that was challenging for you as the mother, that's when things get difficult in mothering. That's often when you know you need to seek support. We are often taught that good mothers do, do, do, do on behalf of their children. (dinner, signing up for the classes). Good mothering happens when we are being good to ourselves. If you are feeling love inside your body, you can't help but give it away. Same with patience, generosity, and curiosity. It starts with caring for yourself so that YOU feel good and have more to offer, and mother from there. That's when your kids thrive. Our joy, our love, and our happiness is in service of our children. It's NOT selfish. It's easy to feel fear that your children will feel a lack of love when you say no. That's not real. Consider setting boundaries as part of healthy parenting and use Brenda's 3 Bs (Bleeding, Barfing, and Broken). If you are dropping everything to meet your kids' needs or trying to catch them before they fall... they aren't learning how to deal with disappointment or discomfort, or how to be patient. Mistake and repair is a very important part of relationship building, and strengthening relationships. Teaching your kids to do things not only helps you, but it helps them. It's never too late to recognize the places where you are getting in your own way, or where you need support. When you commit to the work, it's going to be impactful. Connect with Kate... Kate Kripke is here to help us explore why maternal health and well-being is so important and how to step into feeling good on a daily basis. In her new book, Reinventing Supermom, Kate says that Supermom should mean that we as mothers are tending to our bio-psycho, social, spiritual needs first. Did you know that maternal and child mental health are intimately interconnected and that there is a co-regulation process that happens between mothers and children. That's right! Every single thing that we do to take care of ourselves so that we feel good, is an act of taking care of our kids. Which means that it is part of a mother's job to feel good. Today's conversation is packed full of information about the identity shift of motherhood, secure attachment, how to deal with difficult emotions, modeling for our children and what self-care can look like on a daily basis. It is such a great conversation not only for moms, but for Dads and grandparents too. We hope that you enjoy this great conversation!! Kate is offering.... A quick note about the Motherhood Uncut podcast: Deb and Kate share quite a bit of information that they bring to the table from their work with mothers, children, and also their own lives. Anytime Kate and Deb share a client's story, they are actually bringing a number of different clients and situations they've seen in their work rather than talking about one particular client. They are never going to reveal names in the interest of protecting a person's anonymity. And on a regular basis, the two sit down with their girls to make sure what they share on this podcast is okay with them. So please know that anytime you hear specific details, Kate and Deb are really thoughtful and take into consideration how these examples might impact others in their lives.
