Neurobiologist Jamie Zeitzer is an expert on sleep – or, more accurately, an expert on why so many can't sleep. He notes that, ironically, it's often anxiety about sleep that prevents good sleep. In short, we lose sleep over lost sleep. Wearables and other tools can help but only to a point, and medications do not induce natural sleep. Instead, he counsels consistent routines, less stimulation at bedtime, and cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce worry about insomnia. Le test de la cuillère, mis au point par le Dr Nathaniel Kleitman, physiologiste et pionnier de la recherche sur le sommeil, est une méthode simple pour évaluer son niveau de somnolence et détecter un éventuel manque de sommeil chronique.Principe du testL'idée de Kleitman repose sur la capacité d'un individu à s'endormir rapidement lorsque les conditions sont propices au repos. Pour réaliser le test, il faut suivre ces étapes :1. Se placer dans une pièce sombre et calme, en début d'après-midi (moment où la vigilance baisse naturellement).2. S'allonger sur un lit ou un canapé, en tenant une cuillère en métal dans la main, placée au bord du lit.3. Placer une assiette en métal au sol, juste en dessous de la main qui tient la cuillère.4. Regarder l'heure, puis fermer les yeux et essayer de s'endormir.5. Lorsque le sommeil survient, les muscles se relâchent, la cuillère tombe et fait du bruit en heurtant l'assiette.6. Se réveiller immédiatement et noter l'heure pour calculer le temps mis à s'endormir.Interprétation des résultatsKleitman considérait que le temps mis à sombrer dans le sommeil révélait le niveau de dette de sommeil d'un individu. Voici comment interpréter les résultats :- Si vous vous endormez en moins de 5 minutes : vous êtes en privation sévère de sommeil et souffrez probablement d'un déficit chronique.- Si vous vous endormez entre 5 et 10 minutes : vous avez un certain manque de sommeil, mais il est encore modéré.- Si vous mettez plus de 15 minutes : votre niveau de vigilance est normal et vous ne souffrez pas d'un déficit majeur.Validité scientifique du testBien que ce test soit une manière empirique de mesurer la somnolence diurne, il n'est pas un outil de diagnostic formel. Toutefois, plusieurs études, dont celles publiées dans le Journal of Sleep Research, confirment que la rapidité d'endormissement est un bon indicateur d'un manque de sommeil chronique.ConclusionLe test de la cuillère du Dr Kleitman est une technique simple pour évaluer son niveau de fatigue. There's no time like this time for Standard TimeIn most of Canada and the US, our clocks are “falling back” an hour as we switch to Standard time for the winter and as usual we're hearing mutterings about abandoning the time change.. Chronobiologists like Malcolm von Schantz, who study our internal circadian rhythms, are saying that if we do ditch the practice, we should revert to standard time instead of having permanent daylight time, because morning light is very important to regulating our circadian rhythms, as is having darkness in the evening time. Von Schantz recently co-authored a letter with the British Sleep Society, published in the Journal of Sleep Research, calling for the UK government to end to the practice.Sorry beavers and Polar bears – the unique Canadian animals are not what you thinkBiologists have investigated which animals, by range and evolutionary history, are most unique in Canada as part of an attempt to get a more accurate picture of Canadian biodiversity. The research, led by Arne Mooers from Simon Fraser University, highlights animals such as the mudpuppy, the osprey, the virginia opossum, and the two-tailed frog. At the top of the list is the spiny softshell turtle, which branched away from its family tree 180 million years ago. The research was published in the journal The Canadian Field-Naturalist. A corpse in a well makes a macabre myth realA story recorded in a 12th century Norse saga of a violent attack on a castle has been validated with the discovery and identification of human remains. The story goes that the invaders dropped a dead man into the castle well in order to poison its water supply before departing. That man's remains have now been found. Dr. Anna Petersén, an archeologist at the Norwegian Institute of Cultural Heritage Research, worked with a team to identify and date the remains of this 800 year old skeleton. Their study, published in the journal iScience, revealed he was between 30 - 40 years old, and had blonde hair and blue eyes.A wide range of animals take a tippleIndulgence in alcohol is seen as a largely human vice, but biologists have collected evidence that a much wider range of animals from insects to apes will seek out ethanol, often in fermented fruit, and will, on occasion, overindulge. Dr. Matthew Carrigan, an associate professor of biology at the College of Central Florida says that some birds that fly into windows have been found to have high levels of ethanol, and intoxicated fruit flies will make poor mating choices. The study was published in Trends in Ecology and Evolution.Tapping into science for a greater appreciation of artistic masterpiecesRecent studies of two of the world's most famous paintings by Dutch artists have provided surprising insights into the depths of their art. A new analysis of the entire sky in Vincent van Gogh's painting, The Starry Night, which includes 14 swirling eddies shows how the artist intuitively understood the nature of turbulence, an incredibly complex phenomenon of fluid dynamics. Francois Schmitt, an oceanographer and research director at France's National Centre for Scientific Research and his team published their research in the journal Physics of Fluids. To figure out what it was about Johannes Vermeer's painting, Girl with the Pearl Earring, that viewers find so captivating, the Mauritshuis museum where the artwork hangs in The Hague commissioned a neuroscientific study. Andries van der Leij, the research director of Neurensics — a consumer neuroscience company — and lecturer at the University of Amsterdam, said they found that people's eyes were automatically drawn to the girl's eyes, mouth and pearl earring in a way that drew them in for an emotional experience.

Dr. Gominak grew up and attended college in California, moved to Houston for medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, where she received an MD degree in 1983. Her Neurology residency was done at the Harvard affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She practiced Neurology in the San Francisco Bay area from 1991-2004 then moved with her husband to Tyler, Texas.Starting in 2004 she began to dedicate more of her practice to the treatment of sleep and sleep disorders. In 2012 and 2016 she published two pivotal articles about the global struggle with worsening sleep, the possible causes and solutions, related to vitamin D deficiency and the intestinal microbiome.In 2016 she retired from her office practice to have more time to teach. They are often characterised as lazy and undisciplined - bad sleep hygiene, if you will. But is that UNFAIR? Could hitting the snooze button on your alarm clock in fact be beneficial? A new study published in the Journal of Sleep Research suggests just that - the study's lead author is Tina Sundelin, a sleep researcher from Stockholm University.

Do you press the snooze on your alarm?  If so, you could be getting better sleep than those who don'tGetting a few more minutes of sleep after snoozing your alarm could actually help avid snoozers wake up, new research suggestsThe study, published in the Journal of Sleep Research, found that people who snoozed regularly got additional sleep and were more alert upon waking, despite the disturbed sleep.The Stockholm University researchers surveyed 1,732 participants -1,195 people admitted they hit snooze or set multiple morning alarms at least “sometimes,” and a quarter of people blamed “feeling too tired to wake up” for pressing “snooze.”On average, snoozers — who were generally younger than non-snoozers by about 6 years and more likely to be night owls — reported more morning drowsiness, when waking immediately.Despite their sleep being disturbed by the alarm, snoozers, who still scored more than 20 minutes of sleep, weren't forced to wake from a deep sleep and performed better on cognitive tests after waking up.Photo Courtesy: Self.com

Dr. Romie's journey Dr. Romie is the daughter of South Asian immigrant parents. She was born and raised in the United States, and from the time she was born until she turned eighteen, her father always insisted she became a doctor. Her parents were STEMinists and raised her to be one too. When she entered the world of neurology, less than five percent of American brain doctors were women. In addition to seeing patients, she was also doing cutting-edge research. Although she loved her job, she suffered between 2008 and 2009 because she felt alone. Her patients noticed her suffering, but none of her colleagues did. She got so sick from all the stress that she had to have life-saving surgery in 2010. On her journey to healing after the surgery, she found her path to mindfulness and integrative medicine. Between working with healers around the world, returning, and getting board-certified in integrative medicine, she realized that American employees are being killed by the workload and all the stress. So she embarked on a mission to stop corporate America from hurting the brains of its employees. She did a TEDx Talk in 2018, and it went viral. Then the pandemic happened, and the mental health crisis that the experts already knew existed became publicly known, and people began to talk about it.  Dr. Romie got to where she is today because she does not want anyone else to feel alone and suffer without help. Breaking the stress-success cycle The mentality of professionals in the meetings and events industry, thinking they are only as good as their last event, must change because it is a recipe for disaster for their brains and can lead to burnout. Dr. Romie breaks it down into brain science and calls it the stress-success cycle. She points out that there is a way for event professionals to stop chasing a success high, keep an even keel in their brain, and allow that to translate to their business. Some symptoms of the stress-success cycle Waking up with no energy. Needing caffeine to get going in the morning and keep going throughout the day. Having a constantly-multiplying to-do list, yet being unable to focus. (Adult-onset ADD) Feeling anxious. Disturbed sleep. (Known as a busy brain) Not being able to take work out of your brain. Needing to use alcohol or supplements to take the edge off. Needing to take a sedative at night to calm down. A better way to function There is a better way to function. Events professionals can be successful in their business and with clients- even with a busy brain. The first step is to become aware that you are in a stress-success cycle and have a busy brain. (Take Dr. Romie's free online test to assess your stress level.) Sleep Research has shown that sleep is the foundational requirement for resetting a busy brain. So getting enough sleep is essential for professionals who want to be successful. In the brainSHIFT protocol, they say that sleep is the new status symbol of successful professionals. Chasing the dopamine-adrenalin high Some event professionals continue to do event planning because they are chasing the rush of the dopamine-adrenalin high that comes when an event has gone well. But constantly seeking that high is unhealthy for the brain because it can damage the HPA access and deplete the cortisol and adrenalin coming from the adrenal glands.  Finding balance To find balance, you must create micro-habits or make small brain shifts to maintain sustained dopamine and adrenalin levels. That will allow you to wake up each morning feeling energized without needing a crisis to fuel you. To get a natural dopamine high each morning, you must get more than four hours- preferably six to nine hours of sleep every night.  Easy actions to take at night Modern-day lifestyles do not give most of us the luxury of having mindful morning routines. A new study of more than 500,000 Chinese adults over seven years finds that participants who ate foods flavored with chili peppers every day reduced their risk of premature dying by 14 percent, as compared to people who ate chili peppers less than once a week. “Even among those who consumed spicy foods less frequently [one to two days a week], the beneficial effects could be observed,” says Lu Qi, professor of epidemiology at Tulane University. “Indeed, moderate increase of spicy foods would benefit.” While his study, published in the BMJ, doesn't address other foods, earlier research has indicated that horseradish, black pepper, garlic, and ginger may offer similar benefits.”There also is preliminary data from other studies showing such potential,” Qi says. Capsaicin in chili peppers may be what protects health, Qi says. It reduces risk of obesity, offers antibacterial properties, and helps protect against diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other conditions. Chili peppers also improve inflammation and reduce blood pressure and oxidative stress. Omega-3 may be helpful for attention, impulse control in adolescents University Pompeu Fabra (Spain), October 3 2022. Research findings reported in European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry revealed that higher blood levels of the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) were respectively associated with better test scores for attention and impulsiveness among adolescent boys and girls compared with adolescents who had lower levels. “Polyunsaturated fatty acids are critical for brain development and function, and their deficiency may have long-term functional consequences” authors Ariadna Pinar-Marti and colleagues explained. “Despite the established importance of DHA in brain development, few studies have evaluated whether it plays a role in the attention performance of healthy adolescents,” commented study coordinator Jordi Júlvez, PhD. “In addition, the possible role of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), another omega-3 but of plant origin, has not been as extensively studied.” In comparison with adolescents whose DHA levels were among the lowest one-third of participants, those whose levels were among the top third showed better attention performance as indicated by scores for reaction time and conflict response. Higher ALA levels were associated with less impulsivity. “The role of ALA in attention control is still unclear, but this finding may be clinically relevant, as impulsivity is a feature of several psychiatric conditions, such as ADHD,” Dr Pinar-Martí noted. Weighted blankets found to increase melatonin Uppsala University (Sweden), October 3, 2022 A new study from Uppsala University shows that using a weighted blanket at bedtime increases melatonin in young adults. This hormone increases in response to darkness, and some evidence suggests that it promotes sleep. The findings are published in the Journal of Sleep Research. Previous research has shown that weighted blankets may ease insomnia in humans. Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden experimented with 26 young men and women to examine if the bedtime use of a weighted blanket increases the production of sleep-promoting and anti-stress hormones like melatonin and oxytocin. In addition, they investigated whether the bedtime use of a weighted blanket (12% of participants' body weight) reduced the activity of stress systems in the body. To this end, saliva was collected repeatedly from participants while they were covered with either a weighted or a light blanket to measure melatonin, oxytocin, cortisol, and the activity of the fight and flight sympathetic nervous system. “Using a weighted blanket increased melatonin concentrations in saliva by about 30%. However, no differences in oxytocin, cortisol, and the activity of the sympathetic nervous system were observed between the weighted and light blanket conditions,” says Elisa Meth, first author and Ph.D. student at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences at Uppsala University. “Our study may offer a mechanism explaining why weighted blankets may exert some therapeutic benefits, such as improved sleep. However, our findings rely on a small sample and investigated only the acute effects of a weighted blanket. Thus, larger trials are needed, including an investigation of whether the observed effects of a weighted blanket on melatonin are sustained over longer periods,” says senior author Christian Benedict, Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences at Uppsala University. Clinical Trial: Vegetable Extract may Treat Autism Better than Drugs Harvard Medical School, September 30, 2022 A recent clinical trial has shown that one vegetable extract may have astounding positive effects on those with autism – broccoli extract. Along with an extensive Autism Spectrum Disease research database at GMI, there is evidence suggesting that broccoli extract (along with avoiding heavy metals, minimizing glyphosate exposure, and eradicating the diet of gluten) shows promise in improving ASD. The active ingredient in broccoli that seems to help is called sulforaphane, a molecule found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. A groundbreaking study published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA titled, “Sulforaphane treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD),” found that a broccoli sprout extract significantly improved the behavior of boys and men (those who most often suffer from autism). Sulforaphane was selected, in part, because its physiological effects are well characterized and ideal for those with ASD: “Dietary sulforaphane, of recognized low toxicity, was selected for its capacity to reverse abnormalities that have been associated with ASD, including oxidative stress and lower antioxidant capacity, depressed glutathione synthesis, reduced mitochondrial function and oxidative phosphorylation, increased lipid peroxidation, and neuroinflammmation.” The placebo-controlled, randomized pilot study of 44 males, ages 13-27, showed that after 18 weeks of treatment with a sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract, 46% had noticeable improvements in social interactions and 42% has improvements in verbal communication. More than half of all participants also showed a decrease in irritability, hyperactivity, and repetitive movements. Of note, once treatment with broccoli extract stopped, most of the behaviors associated with autism returned. The dosing schedule was determined by body weight: · 100 lbs or less: one capsule containing 50 µmol (232 mg) of sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract was given daily · 101–199 lbs, 100 µmol (two capsules of 232 mg each) of sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract was given daily · More than 200 lbs: 150 µmol (three capsules of 232 mg each) of sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract was given daily Social media use linked to developing depression regardless of personality University of Arkansas, October 3, 2022 Researchers in public policy and education recently found that young adults who use more social media are significantly more likely to develop depression within six months, regardless of personality type. Published in the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports, the study, “Associations between social media use, personality structure, and development of depression,” was co-authored by Renae Merrill, a doctoral student in the Public Policy Program at the University of Arkansas. This new study found strong and linear associations of depression across all personality traits.” Among the study's findings was that people with high agreeableness were 49% less likely to become depressed than people with low agreeableness. Additionally, those with high neuroticism were twice as likely to develop depression than those with low neuroticism when using more than 300 minutes of social media per day. More importantly, for each personality trait, social media use was strongly associated with the development of depression. The sample of more than 1,000 U.S. adults between the ages of 18 to 30 was from data collected by Primack and his colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh. The authors suggest that problematic social comparison can enhance negative feelings of oneself and others, which could explain how risk of depression increases with increased social media use. Engaging primarily in negative content can also enhance these feelings. And lastly, engaging in more social media reduces opportunities for in-person interactions and activities outside of the home. “Findings from this study are important during a time of technology expansion and integration,” Merrill said. “Connecting to people virtually may increase the risk of miscommunication or misperception that leads to relationship difficulties and potential risk for developing mental health problems.” “People have innate emotional needs for social connection and understanding,” Merrill added. “For example, social media experiences can be improved by becoming more aware of our emotions and our connection with others in various life circumstances. This awareness helps improve relationship quality by simply reaching shared meaning and understanding through more effective communication and concern for others and ourselves. Despite our differences, we have the ability to create a culture of empathy and kindness.” Which grains you eat can impact your risk of getting heart disease earlier Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (Iran), October 3, 2022 In one of the first studies to examine the relationship between different types of grain intake and premature coronary artery disease in the Middle East, researchers found a higher intake of refined grain was associated with an increased risk of premature coronary artery disease in an Iranian population, while eating whole grains was associated with reduced risk. According to the researchers, previous epidemiological studies have reported an association between different types of grain intake with the risk of coronary artery disease. The current study evaluated the association between refined and whole grains consumption and risk of PCAD in an Iranian population. Premature coronary artery disease (PCAD) refers to atherosclerotic narrowing of coronary arteries in males under 55 years old or in females under 65 years old. It is often asymptomatic early in the course of the disease but may lead to chest pain (angina) and/or heart attack with progressive development of narrowing (stenosis) or plaque rupture of the arterial wall. Risk factors for PCAD include smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Whole grains are defined as containing the entire grain, while refined grains have been milled—ground into flour or meal—to improve shelf life but they lose important nutrients in the process. The ACC/American Heart Association Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease recommends a diet that emphasizes the intake of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains and fish to decrease heart disease risk factors. The study recruited 2099 individuals with PCAD from hospitals with catheterization labs in different cities and ethnicities throughout Iran who underwent coronary angiography (women aged ≤ 70 and men ≤ 60). In total, 1,168 patients with normal coronary arteries were included in the control group, while 1,369 patients with CAD with obstruction equal or above 75% in at least a single coronary artery or ≥ 50% in the left main coronary artery made up the case group.
