Sometimes we forget how much trust we place in the little things around us like a lock on a door or a badge on someone's shirt. We see those symbols and assume everything behind them is safe, but it doesn't always work that way. A person with enough confidence, or the right story, can slip through places we think are locked down tight, and most of us never notice it's happening. My guest today is Deviant Ollam, and he's one of the rare people who gets invited to break into buildings on purpose. He talks about how he fell into this unusual line of work, the odd moments that shaped his career, and why understanding human behavior matters just as much as understanding locks or alarms. Listening to him describe these situations, where he's walking through offices, popping doors, or blending in with repair crews, makes you realize how blind we can be to our own surroundings. We also get into the practical side of things: the mistakes companies make, the small fixes that go a long way, and why teaching employees to slow down and ask a few extra questions can make all the difference. It's an eye-opening conversation, especially if you've ever assumed your workplace is more secure than it really is. Show Notes: [03:24] Deviant shares how early adventures, abandoned buildings, and curiosity about locks pulled him toward physical security. [06:20] A story about a law firm reveals how an office "secure" door was bypassed instantly, exposing major hardware flaws. [09:16] Discussion shifts to how the locksmith and safe technician community reacted to his public teaching and how that's changed over time. [13:28] The topic turns to security theater and the gap between feeling safe and actually being protected. [16:18] An explanation of symbolic locks versus real security products highlights how easily people mix up the two. [19:11] Conversation moves into the lack of clear U.S. lock standards and why European systems make things easier for consumers. [21:51] Layered security comes into focus, emphasizing that the goal is to delay and deter rather than stop every possible attack. [24:35] Monitoring tools, overlooked windows, and forgotten blind spots show how attackers often choose the easiest entry point. [27:38] We look at the politics of penetration tests and why coordinating with building management is essential. [31:28] Escalation testing illustrates how long suspicious behavior can go unnoticed inside an organization. [34:34] The need for simple, obvious reporting channels becomes clear when employees aren't sure who to alert. [37:00] A breakdown of common cover stories shows why attackers lean on confidence and industry jargon. [39:50] Urgency and pressure tactics surface as key components of social engineering and why "polite paranoia" helps. [41:14] A viral prank underscores how easily an unverified person can be escorted into restricted areas. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. We had such a blast recording this great episode! The main science topic was a new study on improving fatigue resistance, which performance-matched athletes with different training approaches to see what led to better outcomes. The conclusion is a direct prescription for athletes looking to have better endurance. Being who we are, we throw some scientific turds in the study's punch bowl.We also talked about the new Leadville documentary “Nothing to Lose,” which is coming out on Thursday. Yes, there was a butt shot at mile 23. But most importantly, Director Cody Bare created a beautiful film about what happens after an athlete hits rock bottom. In other words: yes, there is emotional butt too.And this one was full of the best topics! Other topics: Megan's recovery lessons after the 50 miler, blood volume responses, why we love the new product “Dream Shot” so much (plus a 25% discount code), why we are so horrified by champion sprinter Fred Kerley joining the Enhanced Games, Harry Styles running an amazing sub-3 hour marathon, plus questions on post-race blues, headlamps, cross training, relationships, ethical dilemmas with bicarb responders v. non-responders, timing of strides, overcoming plateaus, rest days, and mid-run carbs for low volume training.May all of the ways you are weird be uplifted, even when they involve sneezing and toilets for some reason (that will make sense after you listen...maybe). One of the problems with voice over advice on YouTube and in general is that it often comes from successful people. Stay with me. Among the things it takes to be successful is time. So, the people that are successful today started years and often decades ago. And the problem with that is voice over is a very different business than it was 30, 20, 10, even 5 years ago. And so many of the strategies and paths and techniques that made successful voice actors even in the 20-teens don't apply today, here, now, in the mid 2020's and beyond. If you're just getting into the business today, that's a problem. So today I'm going to tell you exactly what I would do if I were a new voice actor. I'll give you the timeline and how I would spend my time, money, energy, attention. I'll tell you what tools I would use, gear I would buy, and just as importantly, mistakes I would not make that rookies today make often. Strength training is one of the best exercises you can do for weight loss and your overall health, but it can be hard to sift through all the info online about it. Physical therapists have extensive training and knowledge of anatomy, helping you to prevent and/or recover from injuries. The general personal training space is not nearly as regulated and personal trainers might not have that same knowledge. When you build muscle mass, you're actively combatting the natural muscle loss that comes with aging. Not only will your physique improve, but you'll also decrease your likelihood of falls as you get older, decrease loss of bone density, and increase the calories you burn in a day without tons of cardio. If you're just starting out with strength training and feel a little bit intimidated, start super small. Look for simple exercises that focus on one muscle group at a time (rather than compound movements), and start with body weight or 5 lb. dumbbells 1-3 times per week. Hi! People have asked us many times what we think of CrossFit, so it's about time we just laid it all out. In this episode we work our way through CrossFit's various philosophies, protocols, and teachings and highlight where we agree and where we don't. In general, the first half of the conversation is more critical while the second half is more positive. If you want to dive in on your own, we framed this conversation around the CrossFit Level 1 Training Guide, which you can download for free. They describe it as "the most comprehensive CrossFit training resource available" and "foundational to the CrossFit methodology" so it's arguably the best primary source for understanding the CrossFit system. We talk about all the classics in here: - Defining "fitness" and CrossFit's "fitness in 100 words"- What "functional fitness" means- Kipping- Nutrition (including Paleo and Zone)- Olympic Lifting- Uncle Rhabdo and Pukey the Clown And so much more... In one section we mentioned a series of articles on hydration. The Hyponatremia of Exercise is a 12 part series by Tim Noakes. Here's a link to part one which links to all the subsequent parts. Skip to part 4 if you want to see where the Army (and specifically USARIEM) got involved, but it comes back up throughout the series.

What if the key to peak performance lies not just in physical strength but in the intentional integration of breath, mind, and authentic living? In her new book, "Awake Athlete," mindset coach Jess Gumkowski offers a recipe for mental health that seamlessly integrates activity and awareness for sustained embodied engagement. Jess shares some incredible insights into where the intersection of mind and body becomes the gateway to sustained flow states and optimized performance. From conscious breathing practices to the art of living against the grain and "wise selfishness," our conversation navigates how to redefine your approach to endurance sports. I feel ready to breathe deeper this season and I hope you find the same inspiration. Here are some key takeaways: Meditation, breathwork, and mindfulness practices can help connect the mind and body and lead to greater calmness and performance. It's important to surrender to life's challenges and to open up to receiving help from others rather than trying to do everything alone. The ego is a tool that can be used for good when tamed, rather than letting it isolate us through comparison and lack mentality. Living against the grain means following your inner guidance and talents despite obstacles and what others think. There can be a "wise selfishness" to achievement when the goal is to serve others through sharing one's gifts and talents. Low heart rate training can work well for athletes of all levels (and ages), from beginners to advanced. In the episode we take a deep dive into Low Heart Rate Training with a detailed guide and cover: 1. What is low heart rate training? / Why? 2. How to train with a low heart rate? 3. How to overcome frustrations / challenges with low HR training? 4. The 10 common mistakes with low HR training 5. How much zone 2 training is right for you? 6. When and how to add speedwork? This episode is also available as full video here: https://youtu.be/taO8kKsx448 This is going to be a different episode than normal and I honestly don't know if this episode is going to work well in audio format. Let me explain. Recently I (Floris Gierman) recorded a 35 minute video of a low heart rate training guide. The only thing is that I recorded this video, while running a sub 3 hour marathon on a running track. I did use an external mic, however you do hear me huffing and puffing from time to time, because I'm running an average pace of 6:45 min / mile, so 4:12 min / km for 26.2 miles / 42.2km. “We have such a big pocket of people … that are unhappy. Chronic diseases … more than what it should be. … If there's a way to hopefully reach them and get them more involved in a box, I think that the CrossFit affiliate saves lives.” CrossFit Seminar Flowmaster and former Games athlete Eric O'Connor joins host Adrian Conway on the podcast to share his experience of becoming an integral part of CrossFit HQ. O'Connor was introduced to CrossFit in 2006 by multi-year Games athlete Chris Spealler. O'Connor — a former collegiate wrestler — enjoyed the workouts, but was skeptical. It wasn't until he started researching CrossFit and exploring The Journal that he was all in on the methodology and the sport. In 2008, O'Connor decided to take his Level 1 and began coaching. He eventually pursued his Level 2, interned on the Seminar staff, and now holds the highest CrossFit coaching certification — Certified CrossFit Level 4 Coach. Over his career, he has taught more than 450 CrossFit courses. In this episode, O'Connor dives deeper into his CrossFit story. He describes his journey as an athlete and coach through CrossFit's evolution, gives insight into coaching as an introvert, and discusses the benefits of feedback and being a continuous learner. He also explains his previous and current involvement in the company, from content creation to being a head judge to mentoring future CrossFit trainers. As always, stay to the end to hear O'Connor's answers to Conway's Final Five. Since Christopher McDougall released Born To Run in 2009, the story of Caballo Blanco and "The Greatest Race The World Has Never Seen" has become a running culture staple, introducing thousands of runners to the world of ultra and building the case that our bodies are biologically designed to hit the trails. 13 years later, Chris has again teamed up with Eric Orton, the coach that took him from a busted up runner to toeing the line at a 50 mile ultra in Mexico's Copper Canyons, and together they have released Born To Run 2: The Ultimate Training Guide. We sat down with Chris and Eric to talk about the book, tactical training tips, and what you can do today to quickly improve your form and add more joy to your running.
