In today's Episode We had a great conversation with Carolyn Vandyden. Carolyn Vandyken is a Registered Physiotherapist, Pelvic Health Educator, Researcher, Author and co-owner of Physio Works Muskoka. Carolyn is one of the co-owners of Reframe Rehab, a Canadian-based, international teaching company with a mandate to educate healthcare professionals about integrating a biopsychosocial approach into health care and to pelvic health. She has co-authored a patient-centered book called Why Pelvic Pain Hurts, and has co-authored five research papers on pelvic pain, low back pain and incontinence in peer reviewed journals and has contributed chapters to three international textbooks on pelvic pain and the overactive pelvic floor. Follow us @pelvicorerehab and share any questions you have on Pelvic Health or share your experience overcoming Pelvic Health related issues. Episode Notes: What you will learn from this episode: What is the state of physiotherapy today and where should we be heading? What are the challenges that we face in embracing a whole-person approach? What does the term central sensitization mean and how can we incorporate strategies into our pelvic health plan of care for clients to help them retrain a sensitive nervous system? How do bladder urgency/Overactive Bladder Syndrome and IBS fit with a sensitive nervous system? It's not enough to implement strategies to calm the nervous system, we need to phenotype what is going on through a series of questionnaires (SADD-CLIFFS) and base our strategies on the clients self reported answers. How does using a Biopsychosocial Approach complement pelvic health and healing and overcoming persistent pain? To truly help the patient in front of us with low back pain and pelvic health complaints, what are the skills that we need to develop in order to be effective clinicians (breaking down the silos between orthopedics, pelvic health, pain science and lifestyle interventions) Takeaways for listeners Change is hard but non-negotiable…. We have to move beyond “paying lip service” to the biopsychosocial approach and really engage with this practice. 2023 is the year of change for clinicians. Embrace it! The effects of this pressure can be disastrous and toxic for new moms on so many levels. In this episode of the My Sleeping Baby podcast, I'm having an honest and candid conversation with Surabhi Veitch, Registered Physiotherapist and Postpartum Fitness Coach all about why the bounce back culture is so problematic and unhealthy. “The fun part about running is every experience, every race, every training run is an opportunity to learn something. Put that into your back pocket and try to tease out what works best for you. It's kind of this endless curiosity of how do we just fine tune just a little bit more.” - Lindsay Scott After University, Lindsay Scott moved to Nepal, where she would spend the next eight months teaching life skills through sport play, leadership, and goal setting. The trip was also an opportunity for Lindsay to connect with the sport of running while discovering the community at the same time. The experience of running on her own terms gave Lindsay the luxury to fall in love with the sport without the pressure of competing. When Lindsay moved back to Toronto to pursue her Master of Science Degree in Physical Therapy, running became a means to commute from home to school. Eventually Lindsay would connect with the Toronto running community as a Lululemon ambassador where she would introduce people to the joy of running. In 2016, Lindsay started working at the Runner's Academy, a health and wellness clinic dedicated to helping anyone who enjoys, or wants to enjoy, running. As a Registered Physiotherapist, Lindsay strives to get to the root of runners' issues and aims to get them back in action, stronger than ever; she also enjoys helping clients achieve their personal goals through a balance of education, manual therapy, personalized exercise prescription, acupuncture, health promotion, and injury prevention. Lindsay is not only a student of the sport, she's helping others recognize their true potential by teaching them how to be better runners and it's not just runners she is coaching and mentoring; she also runs mastermind and mentorship programs to bring together a collective of like-minded clinicians and coaches who want to excel in supporting runners! This week's episode is about how to stay healthy and mobile while working at home. Due to COVID-19, many people are working from home in less than ideal situations. Our previous podcast - Creating a Virtual Study Space - discussed how to create work-life balance and use technology effectively while working from home to avoid distractions; however, we did not touch on the issues associated with sitting for long periods of time in front of a computer screen. Maintaining physical health, particularly improving flexibility and avoiding painful injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, while working at a desk is important. This week's guest is Nastassia Pailkoff, a Registered Physiotherapist and acupuncture practitioner. Nastassia graduated with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Queen's University and Medical Contemporary Acupuncture Certificate from McMaster University, after completing her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at York University. During her studies, she volunteered at the Black Creek Community Centre in a program that worked to manage chronic disease through exercise. Nastassia's treatment approach is focused primarily on patient education, exercise prescription and correction, and manual therapy. She currently works in the areas of pediatric cerebral palsy, and neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement in adults. She believes rehabilitation should be as personalized as the individual being cared for.

Keri discovered her passion for Pelvic Physiotherapy in 2013 and has continued to further her education in the areas of sexual pain, incontinence, special topics in women’s health including endometriosis, infertility and post hysterectomy treatment, gastro-intestinal disorders, and oncology. Keri enjoys her work with children with pediatric incontinence, her pre-natal and post-natal clientele as well as men and women suffering with pelvic pain because of bladder or bowel difficulties, interstitial cystitis, prostatitis, mastitis, and breast inflammatory conditions. Keri is also honoured to be a member of the Pelvic Health Solutions teaching team. Learning Points 1. What is the pelvic floor? 2. In the 6th episode of THE RUN LAB, host Brendon Ip, a Registered Physiotherapist, Gait Analyst and an avid runner himself explains the physiological barriers that stand in the way of getting faster. Learn about the practical techniques to improve your running and to systematically get faster by not only training harder - but smarter. Incorporate STRENGTHENING and CONDITIONING into your running to help develop speed - and save time by choosing the right exercises to target the muscle groups you want to target. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD1-eVhC2VGzKXHmyhFCx1Q?sub_confirmation=1"If Abdi (Abdirahman) at the age of 43 can perform to such a high level that he can still qualify for the Olympics then I don't think it is a stretch that with some speed work, a strength and conditioning program and perhaps even a tune-up on your diet that you can't set records for yourselves."
In the 5th episode of THE RUN LAB, the host Brendon Ip, a Registered Physiotherapist based in Vancouver, British Columbia details his journey in running including the time he stepped away from the sport completely. In this episode, we find out why it's so easy to start something but so difficult to stick with it. Brendon shares about how a busy schedule initially got in the way of his love of running, the negative consequences and how he bounced back and rededicated himself to the sport. We learn that the key to finding consistency is to recognize a deeper drive and motivation beyond the superficial reasons why we get started in the first place. "We all have our reasons for getting into running or for getting more exercise but I encourage you all to sit down and think about your choice of exercise – whether it's running, going to the gym or taking a class. Think about what you get out of it. What it is that you love about it. You already know why you got into it, you just have to find out why you should stay. "
In the 4th episode of THE RUN LAB, host Brendon Ip, a Registered Physiotherapist based in Vancouver, British Columbia starts a dialogue and challenges the reasoning behind some common practices when in the midst of training for a race. In this episode, we find out that there are inherently different risks associated with each phase of running whether it is during training, during the run or in the preparation leading up to race day. We also learn of the commonly overlooked areas that could greatly improve any runner's pursuit of improvement. Brendon also shares a little bit about some of his experiences with injuries and how he found the solution to getting back to doing what he loves. "And it has even taught me a lot about myself and digging deeper and the ability to set my sights on something and working towards it.""So learn from the mistakes of others and remember to always listen to your body and deviate from your plan if you need to. Afterall, improving as a runner is a marathon, not a race. "
In the 3rd episode of THE RUN LAB, host Brendon Ip, a Registered Physiotherapist, Gait Analyst and an avid runner himself, dives into the mindset of a runner and how to start running. Along the way, Brendon shares some of the experiences he has had which contributed to his love of the sport and he highlights the 5 principles that help build a healthy and longterm approach to running, 1) Setting goals and defining purpose. 2) Making it EASY, 3) Enjoying the little moments, 4) Celebrating achievements and 5) Consistency. "Learn to live for the moments – not the events and activities of your life but for the breaks in between. Learn to love the process of pushing yourself, of hearing the rhythmic pace of your feet striking the asphalt or gasping for air as you race to make a pedestrian light. Learn to love solitude and the last rays of sun as it sets behind the trees or the smile your partner gives you as you both jog along at whatever speed your legs want to. Just learn to love being in the present."
In the 2nd episode of THE RUN LAB, the host, Brendon Ip, a Registered Physiotherapist based in Vancouver, British Columbia gives his thoughts on the landscape of running shoes, where to start looking and shopping and the infamous minimalist shoe debate. In this episode, we learn about the components that go into a running shoe and what makes each shoe ideal for each situation which is something every runner needs to know before they get themselves on the road. "Because once again, we come back to the notion of improvement. And that every single time I lace up my shoes to go run, I have the chance to better myself and beat a previous time. "

On Episode 36 of Concussion Talk Podcast I talk with Katie Mitchell, MSCPT, CAT (C) of Thrive NeuroSport. Katie is a Registered Physiotherapist and Certified Athletic Therapist CAT(C) working at Woolwich Physiotherapy in Elmira, Ontario. She is currently doing her PhD. Katie's research is based on how vision guides movement in athletes, particularly in dynamic tasks. Katie assesses visuomotor performance and balance in athletes who are recovering from concussion to determine return to sport. We talk about how she has translated the findings into her own clinical practice. As well as some interesting future directions with neuro-optometry. Katie on visuomotor function: "vision guides movement, one of my favourite analogies is in a grocery store aisle and you see the item on the shelf that you want. Vision is what guides the reaching motion to pick up that item. Vision provides us with variables in our environment (ex: item on the shelf) that provide opportunities for movement. When that information becomes skewed, that's when we cannot perceive depth and motion properly and we become more unstable with our balance."

We are far more powerful than we've been led to believe. We can diagnose our own health challenges, find the root cause of our physical symptoms and heal ourselves with our own innate knowing in our body. I spoke with the gorgeous Emma Turton about 'medical intuition,' how emotional and energetic blockages cause physical symptoms, and how to treat your physical dis-ease with an 'energy first, physical second' approach. Emma is a Registered Physiotherapist with a Science degree in Physiotherapy, a Certified Transformational Nutrition Coach, and Meditation teacher. She's also a channel with a powerful non-local intuitive connection. She's literally pioneering the space where science meets metaphysics and helping us all know we have the power to listen to and heal our own bodies. This episode isn't just for those with dis-ease but for anyone who has ever had a cold, an infection or even long-term pain... This episode will literally change the way you look at any 'niggles' or serious health challenges you ever have. Inspired takeaways include: • Emma's personal health transformation from being obese, swallowing a handful of pills every day, and several conditions she was told would be 'lifelong,' to a life of absolute wellness and connection to her own body • The old paradigm - why the way we currently treat dis-ease isn't working and how to truly treat our symptoms at the cause • How the location of your pain, and the way your symptoms feel in your body, are the key to understanding the message behind your dis-ease • Why it's important to listen to our body's messages from the beginning to prevent them from showing up in more and more obvious ways (e.g. listening to a cold vs. waiting for a sinus infection or pneumonia) • How even stubbing your toe has an energetic message for you • How to clear your body energetically using nutrition to be able to receive your body's messages more clearly • How empaths can set boundaries around receiving energetic and emotional messages from others *Please note: This episode does not contain medical advice. This is a general discussion on the use of medical intuition, and should not be used as a substitute to seeing a licensed medical doctor.
