I've heard it said that questioning is okay but doubting is wrong, but I think doubting is okay too. God doesn't seem to mind when we doubt. In fact, doubt can be an opening for God to come closer and show us God's love and care; it can be a means to transformation. You can find all of the Scripture readings from the lectionary here: https://bible.usccb.org/readings/calendarby Sister Leslie Keener, CDPSign up to receive our weekly newsletter at www.GodSpaceCommunity.com. Darkness and light are neither good nor bad; they're both parts of the whole. We can't consider suffering apart from resurrection, and we can only enter into resurrection joy while bearing the experience of suffering. Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death and resurrection? Christ is with us in darkness and light. Maybe we, too, need to move through this time of disintegration. As things unravel and one struggle after another emerges, it can feel disconcerting and frightening. Not only does transformation always come, whether I want it to or not, but God's love is in that movement, whether I see it or not. And God invites me to see it. “See, I am doing something new! Welcome to a special episode of the Providence Podcast. Instead of our usual Scripture reflection, we'll be doing an interview about engagement, service, and working with nonprofits. I know there are a lot of people who want to get involved with making the world a better place, and Godknows we need that! So we'll be talking about that today – some of the gifts of volunteering and how to follow a call to get involved, whether that's full time or just the little bit of time you have to give. We'll talk about how to dealwith overwhelm and burnout, how to figure out what direction to move in, and how service can connect you with a community of other people. This conversation is part of a larger movement called the Podcast-a-thon. The Podcast-a-thon invites podcasters to interview someone connected with a nonprofitorganization, and so that's exactly what we're doing! https://www.podcasthon.org/ For this conversation, I consulted an expert, and one of myown sisters, Sister Alice Gerdeman. Sr. Alice has a background education, community engagement, leadership, and peace and justice work, among other things. She'll mention the organization Ignite Peace https://ignitepeace.org/ and her work on the Board of Network https://networklobby.org/, among other organizations. She's a person of many talents, someone who has graced a lot of us with her mentoring and care. I'm sure you'll appreciate hearing her perspective and her wisdom. If you miss having a scripture reflection, never fear! We each have the ability to produce good fruit, to act out of the goodness – the God-ness – inside of us, but we also have it in us to act out of what's not of God. The kind of hope that comes from God reassures us of God's love and presence, both in the future and right now, in this moment, in this first week of Advent, with all that's happening and all that will unfold. For Reflection: Have you ever experienced the hollowness of fear? What was it like? How was god with you in that fear? How do you experience God in the present moment? What does it mean to belong to God's kingdom, this realm not of this world? All we have to do to belong is listen and recognize the truth. We don't have to work hard to belong to Christ; Christ welcomes all of us with love and compassion, and all we have to do is recognize it. For Reflection: What do you feel like you need to let go of? What needs to be refreshed in your life? What truth is God trying to reveal to you? What truth do you need to acknowledge and even welcome? When you think about leadership, how does secular leadership differ from genuine spiritual leadership, especially that of Christ? So, we keep showing up. We trust that our two cents are enough. Even when we don't see much effect from our efforts, we keep showing up because God provides us with any coins we have and they don't belong to us. Whether we stay or go, God is still with us. Christ accompanies us, and we accompany Christ in the company of each other. Yes, sometimes it's hard. Sometimes we don't want to persevere, but somehow, by the grace of God, we do. How could we not? To whom shall we go? May we journey up to the mountaintop with Jesus and his companions and encounter God too. As Jesus revealed the fullness of who he is, may we reveal the fullness of who we are before God and those closest to us. And may we each hear God proclaim that we are God's beloved too, because we are. You can read the reflection and sign up to receive our weekly newsletter at www.GodSpaceCommunity.com. What if instead of wondering if someone is worthy, we focus on being humble, knowing that we're not perfect either? What if we live with patience, trusting that we're all just doing the best we can? What if we were to bear with each other in love instead of judgement? And what if we didn't even judge our own worthiness? Because why should we? God doesn't. I can't predict the future, but if I respond wholeheartedly to life's events, both good and challenging, I'll continue to grow into the person God created me to be. What I shall be has not yet been revealed. I do know that when it is revealed I shall be like Christ. Community is one of the best parts of our lives but also one of the hardest parts. Why is that? And if relationships are so hard, why do we keep persevering in them? For Reflection: When you think about the communities to which you belong, what have your experiences been like? Have you ever had an experience when you felt heard and seen and understood, cared for and loved? What was that like? How was God in that for you? Have you ever experienced conflict in community? Or hurt? Or misunderstanding? What was that like? Were you able to resolve it? How? How are you experiencing God's love in your life right now? Maybe you could take some time with God, listening and opening, and try to notice God's love and presence. The more that I, and we, live and grow into the fullness of being to which God calls us, the more we belong to God and ourselves. When we belong like that, we'll find belonging wherever we go. Happy summer! During this time, we'll be posting a few past episodes for your listening enjoyment and for the deepening of your prayer life. We hope they speak to your heart and mind and they resonate with what's happening in your life! And we always like to hear back from you about your thoughts on the readings, so feel free to reach out! Be sure to sign up for the God Space newsletter at GodSpaceCommunity.com to stay connected. There's a lot going on in this Gospel, and the quick pace makes it seem like Jesus's life is an action-packed adventure with lots of people who need help. Are these events just part of a busy day in the life of Jesus? These encounters have much to tell us about the healing ministry of Jesus – for those in the story and for us too.
