I also talk about why I choose to stay, and the "wrestle" many of us have with our minds and hearts in this space. This includes a conscious decision to make continuous efforts to keep our heart soft. I hope it is helpful for those who want to do the same.

Luke 16: 1-9 RMC's Susan Scott preached this week on what Jesus was trying to do when he spoke in parables. The parables Jesus spoke in are often confusing, indirect, and seldom leave the listener with clear answers to their questions. Why won't Jesus get to the point? However, this storytelling tactic forces the listener to actually listen, ponder, and wrestle in their minds with content of the story. The settings and people in the stories have familiar jobs and roles in Jewish society to draw in the listener, but their unexpected actions require a level of engagement for the listener that precludes the audience from "zoning out". Jesus primarily used two types of parable. One to undercut and derail the accusations of his detractors, and the other to prepare his followers for the radically new kind of kingdom Jesus was ushering in that had nothing to do with their current political subjugation. Furthermore, the parables of Jesus, regardless of the audience, at the end had a punchline that subverted expectations and taught valuable lessons to those with ears to hear. In parables, Jesus told the religious leaders that their obsession with following the law was all a hollow show without any sincere connection to God's will for people to live. Christ's followers in turn were called to live a life of soft hearts and hard feet. A life full of sacrifice, suffering, and radical gift giving that will not make sense to the world, but shows God's love in its fullness . We too must emulate our spiritual forebears and wrestle with these parables so that we may learn to also live with soft hearts and hard feet.

A soft heart moved by loving compassion, forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, care for others, meekness, humility, gratitude, and all fruits of the Spirit is a mark of maturity. If the natural man is self-centered and hard-hearted, then maturity in Christ must call us to be tenderhearted. Preached by Jared Kress on January 26th, 2025. Primary Text: Selected Passages. There are a lot of ways that we can find ourselves hardened to either follow the voice of the Lord, or even love people well. The scary thing is, if we find ourselves in a place of a hard heart, we often don't even realize we have one. This is why it's important to maintain a soft heart before the Lord, so that in His kindness, we can receive His guidance and even correction. In this message, we're going to discuss this important posture, and how we can make sure we're found in a place of welcoming the Lord in our lives, and not pushing Him away.Visit us online at http://www.fathershouseportland.org

In 1966, Jackie Pullinger left the UK on a boat, aged 22 and with just £10 in her pocket, not knowing where she'd get off. Docking in Hong Kong, she sensed God saying that was the place. Her work in the Walled City of Kowloon saw triad gang members come to faith, girls rescued out of brothels, and thousands of drug addicts over the ensuing decades being set free. That story was told in the best-selling ‘Chasing the Dragon', and she's still in Hong Kong with a network of faithful workers, ministering to many more broken people, living by faith and trusting God to provide for their needs. There are many reasons for and ways of becoming hard in our cruel world. You may think a hard heart is a good and protective thing. When harm or disappointment comes, a natural human response is to develop a tough and closed heart. But that also closes you off to the good things God intends for you and wants to work in you. Is there a way to cherish a soft heart in a tough world? Mother, writer, and teacher Charaia Rush is Dr. Carol's guest on this encouraging episode. They talk about how shame and pain can harden our heart, what a hard heart is and isn't, and God's process for softening our heart which opens us up to all His good things. Join us today as I recount my recent quadruple bypass experience and some of the things Yahuah showed me. While these things, many of which I did not talk about due to a time constraint, were 100% worth learning, I know for me the only way I would learn them was to go through this, No one could explain it to me, many have tried. These things might be obvious to most believers but were things I needed to learn and experience first-hand, and I typically only learn by doing. I feel that is the best teacher, sometimes I kinda wish I was not wired that way, it would certainly be easier if I could just trust what “they” tell me is true, but that was never Yahuah's design for me from my first day. A brief description of the operation is included so beware if you are squeamish, but it seemed important to the account, and might be helpful to anyone considering the same operation. There are many other things I experienced but those will have to be for another day. If you find yourself forced to consider a bypass, or lung, or heart transplant call me I would be happy to share what I know … unfortunately. And thanks to Kevin for walking me through this before and for the encouragement.

With each day that passes, I'm more convinced I have absolutely no power to change the hearts of my boys. Oh, I can change their behavior if I try hard enough. Anybody can do that. But I know that what's in the heart eventually comes out. I know that if their knees are ever to bend to Jesus as savior, their hearts must bend first. And that's God's business. I'm praying you'll grasp this concept so clearly that it will bring you strength and peace in the midst of your wildest storms. You can't change the heart of your boys. You can't. Period. It's not your job. ~ Brooke McGlothlin LINKS: Get your downloadable prayer calendar to complement this month on the podcast. Support the ministry with your $5 monthly gift through Patreon. In this Bible Story, Paul is nearly stoned to death by Jewish Christians who seek to control Gentiles by the law. They are dangerous and controlling. Yet Paul does not let the stones stop him. This story is inspired by Acts 14. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is Acts 14:19 from the King James Version.Episode 229: As Paul and Barnabas entered Iconium to preach, both Jews and Gentiles were receptive and restored by the message of love and mercy in Jesus that they brought. But not everyone in the city was happy about this change. Certain men of influence added poison to these teachings and stirred the people against Paul and Barnabas. So they fled to Lystra where they healed a man and were called gods by the men of the city. Just as Paul and Barnabas convinced the crowd that they were mere men, the elders of Antioch came and captured Paul, bringing him out to the city to be stoned. But because of what God did for him, Paul went right back to the city the next day to continue preaching the good news of Jesus.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast.
