Last month, ago, an article was published on the Exponent II by Linda Hamilton titled “Mormon Microfeminisms”. I smiled while reading it and wanted to share some of the content. The Exponent does use the word “feminism” in their subtitle for their forum: Exponent II is “A feminist forum for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum.” I share some of my experiences as well. If you have had some, you can send me stories at unleashingsistersaints@gmail.com. List to the original blog post by Linda: Mormon Microfeminisms — Exponent II Blog
Mormon women wrote and published a newspaper for and about Mormon women. The paper had a small circulation and was replaced with the Relief Society Magazine shortly after the newspaper declined.

Back to Georgia and Tbilisi this week with the one and only Hamatsuki, resident DJ at the infamous Bassiani. Exponent of a versatile DJing style that runs the gamut from rugged techno wares to propulsive acid, via liquid electro, techno, house and everything in between, Hamatsuki treats us to a wild and effusive two hours of radical obliqueness, steering us constantly into murky waters, where life swarms and the metamorphic magic happens. Stacking crazy frantic wares one after the other in a Fantasia-like symphony of broken grooves, raging uptempo and hair-raising buildups, here comes one of Tbilisi's key figures with a massive, uncompromising blast-off of a set. Sonic boom inbound.

Here's what we got into:Deals of the Week: Ruth Foxe Blader is leaving Anthemis, albeit slowly; Exponent has a second fund set up, but without a pure fintech focus; and Alex wanted to talk about why 2024 could be a pretty alright year for crypto.Layoffs, shutdowns: Frontdesk laid off 200 people and is shutting down, which makes for a good conversation about its business model. Countdown Capital is also throwing in the towel, due in part to larger multi-stage funds inflating the entry point for hot seed deals. It's a trend worth keeping an eye on.Helping one another: Israel is working to support its startup industry which has been disrupted by the Israel-Hamas war, and how the new Tech for Palestine group was formed. And that's Equity for this week! Arteetude Episode 201 with John Adams: A Deep Dive into Environmental Art and Conscious CreationIn this riveting episode of Arteetude, Detlef Schlich invites listeners into the unique artistic world of John Adams. Broadcasting from Adams' gallery-house in Cove, Ireland, the two explore the meaningful intent behind his art, particularly his recent body of work titled "Animals Matter." This series focuses on the environmental struggles facing animals due to human pollution and overfishing, topics that have become increasingly important during the COVID-19 lockdowns.John Adams sheds light on the duality of art's impact on the environment, discussing his conscious efforts to reduce pollution. Through painting on reclaimed beach rubbish like corrugated metal, Adams sends a powerful message about the conditions faced by marine life. He is the Most Holy, the Most Glorious. Praise be to Thee, O my God, that the dawn of Thy Ridván Festival hath broken, and that therein one who had sought Thy presence hath attained his goal, O Thou our Lord, the Most Merciful! How numerous are Thy loved ones, O my God, who traversed the sands of Syria in their longing to gaze on Thy beauty but who were prevented from attaining the court of Thy transcendent oneness by reason of the misdeeds of Thy foes, who have disbelieved in Thee and gainsaid Thy sovereignty. O Lord! Look upon the oppressors of Thy people with the eye of Thine avenging wrath. By Thy might! Their iniquity hath reached such heights as none can reckon save Thyself, Who knowest all things. Thy loved ones acquiesced to captivity and confinement in this prison, and yet their enemies were still not satisfied, so intense was their hatred for the Manifestation of Thy Cause. Blessed be the man of insight who seeth in all that hath befallen him in Thy path naught save that which shall exalt his station and magnify Thy Cause, O Thou the Lord of the worlds! By Thy glory! Were all the peoples of the earth to join together to harm a single one of the people of Bahá, they would find themselves powerless, for all that they see as harming Thy chosen ones is as light unto them and as fire unto Thine enemies. Were it not for the confinement, in the Most Great Prison, of Him Who is the Exponent of Thy transcendent sovereignty, how would Thy Cause have been promulgated, Thy sovereignty manifested, Thy might proclaimed, and the truth of Thy signs established? Would that I Myself had borne all the tribulations of the world, out of love for Thee and for Thy creatures! O Lord! Open Thou the eyes of Thy servants, that they may behold Thee at all times seated upon the throne of Thy grandeur and supreme over all who are in heaven and on earth. Potent art Thou to do what Thou willest. No God is there but Thee, the Almighty, the Most Powerful. Mike Pullam was a successful Business Executive working in Supply Chain and Matt Stirling was already a successful health entrepreneur working in the Direct Marketing space. Both Pullam and Stirling came from strong athletic backgrounds with Stirling spending much of his early career in fitness and nutrition. Shortly after meeting, a friendship quickly developed between them, which later evolved into a business partnership. The two were convinced that health-conscious consumers would start to demand alternatives to high-sugar, high-caffeine, and artificial mass-marketed energy drinks, in search of a product that better aligned with their lifestyles. They were equally convinced that consumers were looking for more functionality beyond that of simple caffeine found in popular energy drinks. They believed that when someone required more energy in their day, their bodies needed more than just a short-term caffeine fix followed by a crash.Through countless hours of brainstorming and collaboration during the early stages of the pandemic, they created their vision for EXPONENT and personally funded all aspects of the startup to allow their vision to come to life. The vision was simple: They believed customers should not have to settle for less with their energy drink. Visionaries and overachievers have never settled for less, so why should they have to settle for an inferior energy drink?1. How did the dynamic duo start between Matt & Mark 2. The vision of the Exponent energy drink 3. What is entrepreneurship mean for Matt & Mike The 3 Flavours or Exponents 4. What is the first step of entrepreneurship? 5. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 18, 2022 is: exponent ik-SPOH-nunt noun Exponent refers to “someone who supports a particular cause or belief” as well as “someone who is known for a particular method or style.” // He was a leading exponent of animal rights. See the entry > Examples: “Onscreen, [Tom] Cruise is unmistakably our biggest movie star, as the New York Times reporter Nicole Sperling recently explained—the last true exponent of a century-old studio system that has been steadily eroded by the rising forces of franchise filmmaking and streaming.” — Calum Marsh, The New York Times, 5 July 2022 Did you know? You probably won't be surprised to learn that exponent and proponent have a lot in common. While the two share visual similarities and closely related definitions, they also have a common ancestor: the Latin ponere, meaning “to put.” Exponent comes from exponere, meaning “to explain, expound, or set forth,” while proponent comes from proponere, meaning “to expose to view, bring to one's attention, propose.” Today, proponent usually refers to someone who argues in favor of something. Exponent can also refer to someone who is an advocate, but it tends to refer especially to someone who stands out as a shining representative of something. In addition, it has kept its earlier meaning of “one who expounds,” as well as its mathematical symbol meaning.

Whitman is the Founder & CEO of Exponent Beauty, the first self-activated clinical skincare brand. After decades retailing “potent” clinical skincare products, Whitman had her A-HA moment while President and CMO of The Red Door by Elizabeth Arden: estheticians optimize precious active ingredients by mixing skincare fresh, in the moment. This led her to question how effective retail products actually are and was the insight for Exponent's innovative clinical form factor. As a Certified B Corporation, Exponent is proud to use the power of business to build a more inclusive, sustainable economy. In this episode, we cover:Liz's background in entrepreneurship and executive leadership in the beauty industryLiz's aha moment with self activated skincare & what was missing in the industryConsumer education on what we should be looking for in skincare aka The Exponent StandardFocusing on what products are FULL of, as well as FREE ofSkincare habits that should be ditched according to LizWhat Liz looks for when investing in a businessLiz's top lessons as an entrepreneur and advice to succeedCONNECT WITH THE GUESTWEBSITE | https://exponentbeauty.com/INSTAGRAM | @exponent.beautyRESOURCES:Check out the PurelyYou LibraryGrab your PurelyYou Membership free MONTH with code 'PODCAST'Grab your Seed Daily Synbiotic and use code ALYSIA15 for 15% off your first month of seed! #SeedPartnerTo shop all things PurelyPope, Alysia's favorites, eBooks, Amazon, etc., click HERETo connect with Alysia, click HERETo stay up to date with #ThePurelyPodcast, click HERETo schedule a COMPLIMENTARY 1x1 Health Coaching Consultation with Alysia, click HEREFor a chance to win a 3 month PurelyYou Subscription + 1 Health Coaching Session with Alysia, rate, review & subscribe to the podcast + send a screenshot to assistant@purelypope.com. This episode is brought to you by Yotpo. Liz Whitman has been in the beauty industry for 15 years - as an entrepreneur, investor, and executive - but her "ah-ha" moment for her latest brand came when she was getting a facial. The Founder and CEO of Exponent Beauty, a self-activated skincare system designed to deliver peak potency with each dose, was president of Red Door by Elizabeth Arden when a long-time aesthetician was bringing her up to speed on products and protocols. "She spent a lot of time telling me why, as part of our protocols, we mixed masks and serums and treatments fresh before applying them to guests," she says. "I'm sitting there, my eyes are closed. ... And I go to the next logical question: if that's true, then how effective can pre-mixed retail products actually be?" Fast forward through a move to the West Coast and lab research that confirmed her suspicion that a skin-care solution was needed. "It's wonderful to come up with something wildly innovative that truly works," she says. Liz has some words of wisdom she's gained after her career as an entrepreneur. "In some ways, I envy first-time founders on the emotional front because not knowing what's ahead is somewhat amazing - you have no fear whatsoever," she says. Liz offers these tactical suggestions to would-be entrepreneurs. "There are tons of people willing to give advice and feedback and share learnings, and it's never been easier than it is today to just get in touch with pretty much anyone through the Internet (and) through various social platforms," she says. "Don't be precious about your idea. Kick it around...Ask them what they like about it, etc. And that's really important and very hard to do. And I think this is in life in general, not just with entrepreneurship, but you have to create a safe space for real feedback." As for the future, Liz says to expect the unexpected from her brand. "I think you can fully expect that anything coming out of Exponent will be a think-outside-the-jar approach to new product development." In Part 2, Liz talks about: * Her background in the beauty industry. * The "ah-ha" moment for her new brand. * The four phases of development for Exponent Beauty. * Advice for other entrepreneurs. * Her continued attraction to starting new brands. * A guide to the brand's website and products. * The importance of establishing consumer trust. This episode is brought to you by Yotpo. Exponent Beauty wanted to provide the best clinical results with their skin-care line, so even the packaging is the result of two years of research and development, says Liz Whitman, Founder,, and CEO of Exponent Beauty, a self-activated skincare system designed to deliver peak potency with each dose. "I feel like beauty trails the food industry but lags by about a decade," Liz says. "If you think about this movement towards fresh foods and made-yourself, anti-pre-packaged, watered down, bottled up things - that's exactly what we're doing right in skin care. We're saying there's a reason why these ingredients are great. They're active ingredients. They're very fragile. And if they're pre-mixed, watered down, and bottled up for 18 months on a shelf before you take it home, it's just not going to be as beneficial as making sure you're mixing it fresh." Liz says maintaining the integrity of active ingredients is paramount in clinical skin care. "Our point is, even if you put in the optimal amount of active ingredients into a liquid form at the time of manufacture, you're going to see that degrade very rapidly," she says. "We're working to change that." Liz says she took the top-selling products on the market and sent them to a lab to determine the concentration of active ingredients. "Within eight weeks ... those products lost 40 percent of their active ingredient concentration on average," she says. "That's why we have introduced this line of powders that you then mix because when it's in powder form, it is protected from that degradation." Of the three years of R&D before Exponent Beauty launched, two-thirds of the time was spent on the dispenser and packaging. "Formulating with powders is not an easy endeavor, right? Because what we're trying to do is to get to part a powder and a liquid to mix quickly into something that you want to put on your face," she says. "Kudos to our product development and chemistry teams for figuring that out." In Part 1, Liz talks about: * Gratitude to her first supplier - her grandmother - Who supported her when she had her first business idea in third grade. * An overview of the brand. * Feedback so far to the brand's products. * How the food and skin-care industries are similar. * Testing for active ingredient degradation. * The advantages of mixing your products fresh vs. traditional storage. * Why the packaging design is so important. On today's episode we're going to be tackling a particularly tricky topic: how we and other women can—intentionally or unintentionally—become enforcers and perpetrators of patriarchy. Fortunately, we'll have not one, but three spectacular guests joining us to help unpack this phenomenon by sharing their own experiences, emotions, and insights. Each of our contributors—Heather Sundahl, Carrie Salisbury, and Heather Renfro—has a unique, invaluable story to tell and I'm so grateful to have them all with us. Heather Sundahl (she/her) is a writer and editor and studying to be a marriage & family therapist. Her favorite pastime is swapping stories with family and friends. Caroline Salisbury (she/her) lives in Los Angeles, California where she works as a musician, educator and business entrepreneur. She holds music degrees in Viola Performance and was homeschooled as a child and teen. Raised with doomsday preppers, Carrie frequently experienced childhood homelessness and poverty while preparing for upcoming global disasters. She is a survivor of a college sexual assault. Today she is President of the Suzuki Music Association of California - Los Angeles Branch, a music education non-profit for teachers and families, and owner of https://geronarose.com/ (Gerona Rose Music Studio). She has written about religion and feminism at https://www.the-exponent.com/author/violadiva/ (the Exponent blog) as ViolaDiva. She currently shares her creative projects, music, and writing at http://www.carolinesalisbury.com/ (www.carolinesalisbury.com) and on IG and FB @carolinesalisbury Caroline is mother to three children with her husband, pianist-composer Benjamin Salisbury. Heather Lewis Renfro (she/her) works as an educator at a high school in the San Francisco bay area and as a University Supervisor for beginning teachers. She is also a mom to two awesome teenagers. Outside of the things that keep her busy, she can be found swimming, reading, and walking her dog. *Please note that this episode contains some explicit language, as well as limited discussion of sexual violence*
