Mckenzie, Warwick poet, musician, and creator of The Poe Underground, explores the possibilities of combining the voice of the guitar with the haunting words and expressions of poetry. In this episode, hear the poemsEther Darkness by James A.S. McPeek andSlow Rhythms (Chant Before Thought) by Rudolph Edward Kornmann accompanied by improvised classical guitar.Ether DarknessThis dark is beautiful. There is no pain,No sense is challenged by unmeaning sight—Only the thick cool blanket of the nightPresses the body and its fevered brain.Time is sewed quietly by needles of rain—There is no way to mark this moment's flightThat has no touch with any common light,Nor so much color as all day has lainHidden within a shadowed jonquil bloom. And in this quietude of nothingness,There is no sound, no dreaming, no distress—The darkness flowers to the edge of doom.Slow Rhythms (Chant Before Thought)How shall I sleep inthis liquid of moonlightstill and death-steep?You were breath and delight, and the moods of your eyes wereof slumberand fondness—How shall I sleep?Remembering your curvedness(stars at your breastsand the moons of your thighs)how shall I sleep—with the sighsof your fingertipshaunting my lips? How shall I sleep inthis liquid of moonlightstill and death-steep?You were gentle and whiteand the sound of your blood isthat breath which will wanderin thin broken twilightsof houses asleep—(old houses that drowse withthe pain of their wonderat that which lies under them, graven and deep). In this liquid of moonlight, how shall I sleep?Watch D.K. recordEther Darkness.See D.K. recordSlow Rhythms.Visit The Poe Undergroundwebsite.Tune in to The Poe Undergroundpodcast.

Warwick poet and musician D.K. Mckenzie presents excerpts from his spoken word and music podcast, The Poe Underground, in a Warwick Radio exclusive. In this episode, hear jazz-inspired, original music and the poems Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird by Wallace Stevens, Songs from the Dusk by Russell W. Davenport, and Infinity by D.K. Mckenzie. Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird I Among twenty snowy mountains, The only moving thing Was the eye of the blackbird. II I was of three minds, Like a tree In which there are three blackbirds. III The blackbird whirled in the autumn winds. It was a small part of the pantomime. IV A man and a woman Are one. A man and a woman and a blackbird Are one. V I do not know which to prefer, The beauty of inflections Or the beauty of innuendoes, The blackbird whistling Or just after. VI Icicles filled the long window With barbaric glass. The shadow of the blackbird Crossed it, to and fro. The mood Traced in the shadow An indecipherable cause. VII O thin men of Haddam, Why do you imagine golden birds? Do you not see how the blackbird Walks around the feet Of the women about you? VIII I know noble accents And lucid, inescapable rhythms; But I know, too, That the blackbird is involved In what I know. IX When the blackbird flew out of sight, It marked the edge Of one of many circles. X At the sight of blackbirds Flying in a green light, Even the bawds of euphony Would cry out sharply. XI He rode over Connecticut In a glass coach. Once, a fear pierced him, In that he mistook The shadow of his equipage For blackbirds. XII The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying. XIII It was evening all afternoon. It was snowing And it was going to snow. The blackbird sat In the cedar-limbs. Songs from the Dusk (Movement for an Imaginary Violin) Take me there, take me there—far, far within The scarlet cloisters of the clouds, hung over This glassy water-terrace rimmed with clover, O my imaginary violin! It cannot hush, it cannot hush—as thin, As wild, as sweet as miracle! Mad lover, My heart must almost perish to discover What ecstasy of wine we are—what kin. Yet you grow slow aloft, and falter—fall. I scarcely hear, I scarcely hear at all Those drops of tone. Warblers and swallows call Across the water, drawing shore to shore; The woodpecker; the dusk. Oh, play one more— One more—one more—one more note! That is all. Infinity Death pulls me one way You tug me the other Your giant eyes dance Bust forth with black hole gravity Atomic fusion is your smile with a voice of combustion There you go with the laughter of a thousand earthquakes Rattling the ground beneath your feet Never exhausting your gate of storms and fire Your kiss however is the thing The most powerful thing that topples the world And keeps the oceans from flowing The poison of time is postponed and so is death The universe is on hold when we're together We are immortal dancing, spinning, embracing Through the constants of infinity and true love Visit The Poe Underground website. D.K. Mckenzie, Warwick poet, musician, and creator of The Poe Underground, explores the possibilities of combining the voice of the guitar with the haunting words and expressions of poetry. In this episode, hear the poems Remembrance by Walter de la Mare and At Baia by Hilda Doolittle or H.D. accompanied by improvised classical guitar. Remembrance The sky was like a water drop in shadow of a thorn, clear, tranquil, beautiful, dark, forlorn. Lightning along its margin ran; a rumour of the sea rose in profundity and sank into infinity. Lofty and few the elms, the stars in the vast boughs most bright; I stood a dreamer in a dream in the unstirring night. Not wonder, worship, not even peace seemed in my heart to be: only the memory of one, of all most dead to me. At Baia I should have thought in a dream you would have brought some lovely, perilous thing, orchids piled in a great sheath, as who would say (in a dream), "I send you this, who left the blue veins of your throat unkissed." Why was it that your hands (that never took mine), your hands that I could see drift over the orchid-heads so carefully, your hands, so fragile, sure to lift so gently, the fragile flower-stuff— ah, ah, how was it You never sent (in a dream) the very form, the very scent, not heavy, not sensuous, but perilous—perilous— of orchids, piled in a great sheath, and folded underneath on a bright scroll, some word: "Flower sent to flower; for white hands, the lesser white, less lovely of flower-leaf," or "Lover to lover, no kiss, no touch, but forever and ever this." Warwick poet and musician D.K. Mckenzie presents excerpts from his spoken word and music podcast, The Poe Underground, in a Warwick Radio exclusive. In this episode, hear easily-consumed, original music and the poem September Midnight by Sara Teasdale and a suite of poems called Noir Night by D.K. Mckenzie. September Midnight Lyric night of the lingering Indian Summer, Shadowy fields that are scentless but full of singing, Never a bird, but the passionless chant of insects, Ceaseless, insistent. The grasshopper's horn, and far-off, high in the maples, The wheel of a locust leisurely grinding the silence Under a moon waning and worn, broken, Tired with summer. Let me remember you, voices of little insects, Weeds in the moonlight, fields that are tangled with asters, Let me remember, soon will the winter be on us, Snow-hushed and heavy. Over my soul murmur your mute benediction, While I gaze, O fields that rest after harvest, As those who part look long in the eyes they lean to, Lest they forget them. Noir Night Drenched sidewalks Neon lights blaze the night and then Jazz Takes over the shadows Dim candles burn over On that loose night While that smooth rain drops in Uninvited and unrestrained Mark the cars Mark the walls With those liquid clouds Now A band of fire trucks Races away towards the womb of the boulevard As that lonesome jazz plays As that tenor sax does play This is the type of music that must take place in heaven When wet streets reign and street lamps illuminate the desperate puddles below The bruised man With his sad horn Blasts and Wails Until the walls of night Vanish and the final hour of night Reaches its maximum limit Welcome to the African night Where jazz rules and drizzles Little nibbles of hurt, joy, and class On your soul All over your aching heart Let the jazz infuse you Let the warm jazz move in and through you Let the jazz compel you To ponder the enveloping shadows Visit The Poe Underground website. Double dipping in a man's world requires “extra” effort. You never know who's going to turn up in the stories on Elly McGuire's podcast, Shaking The Bushes—Yoko Ono, Jonas Salk, Richard Hatch (Richard Hatch?), even a former President, to name a few—as she shares humorous and often unpredictable autobiographical anecdotes and social commentary about living parallel lives in her "cozy" apartment in Manhattan and her childhood home in Warwick, Rhode Island. What you think might be so different from residing in the biggest city in the world and in the smallest state in the union can actually turn out to be very much the same. Author and adventurist Elly McGuire has traveled the world, rubbed shoulders with celebrated people, and is now "shaking the bushes" of her colorful past. Visit the Shaking the Bushes website.
