Flopcast episode 682! It’s another 80s-themed episode, and we’re up to 1982. And to keep this one short and silly, we’re just looking at the albums we bought from that year. It’s a mix of goofy mainstream pop (Hall & Oates, Air Supply, REO Speedwagon), some slightly cooler stuff (Elvis Costello, Devo, Midnight Oil), and […] The post Flopcast 682: Well, We’re Living Here in ’82 appeared first on The ESO Network.
Back from a little spring break with the mighty Pelican! Their newly released Flickering Resonance is a brilliant album and gave me the excuse I needed to finally get Trevor of the band on the show. We talk about a ton of things, from water park hotels, to flame meditation, basking in the warmth of creative energy and, yes, the first 11 REO Speedwagon albums (but only the first 11). Trevor certainly smartens up the place with some really insightful and fun conversation. PUSH PLAY! Nick catches us up on the news of the week. Zak Starkey is re-fired by The Who, BandCamp adjusts their terms and conditions, and Trump orders Springsteen investigated after The Boss criticized his administration on stage.Song: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - “Qwik Maff”Greg first caught wind of Sleep Token back in 2022 and he had a feeling they were going places. Their latest album, Even in Arcadia, is now the number 1 album on Billboard 200 and that caught the attention of our good old friends at Pitchfork. This week, we're back with a good old fashioned “Review the Review.”Songs:Sleep Token - “Emergence”Sleep Token - “Past Self”Jay was pondering Theseus's Paradox on a recent drive (not really, but go with me on this) which is the thought experiment that questions the identity of an object over time when all of its parts are replaced. There are some touring bands that one could apply this question to, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kansas, REO Speedwagon, Heart, and others. What do you think, is a band whose original members have all been replaced still the same band?
Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHCassandra comes back from a hike and turns on the news, catching an interview with Dr. Susie, who helps her realize that she always picks the wrong men to date. She heads to work at the advertising agency. Her assistant Dana is getting married, but Cassandra's boyfriend, Peter, refuses to go to the wedding with her because he thinks weddings are boring. At the wedding, Cassandra is seated at a table full of children—except for one other adult, a man named Robert. They really hit it off, but she leaves before they can exchange any contact information.Later, she's hanging out with her mom and sister, who help her see that Peter isn't right for her. It becomes painfully obvious when, on a date to the batting cages, she just watches him hit balls the entire time—until she finally leaves. One day, while walking down the street, she sees Dr. Susie doing a book signing. Her sister insists they go in, and Cassandra is once again taken with Dr. Susie's advice. The next day, while walking her dog, Cassandra bumps into Robert—who is also walking his dog. Sparks fly, and he asks her out on a date! They go play putt-putt and then transition to pool. They have the best time, and she kisses him on the cheek. The problem? There are too many sparks—something Dr. Susie warns against. According to her, Cassandra should choose someone boring and dependable.Luckily, she soon meets a boring guy named George and decides to give it a shot. So, she starts spending time with both men. With Robert, it's all fun and excitement—he even brings her and her mom to an REO Speedwagon concert. With George, it's formal dinners and predictability. While discussing her dilemma with her mom and sister, opinions are split: Mom is Team Robert, but her sister believes Robert contradicts everything Dr. Susie preaches.Eventually, Cassandra makes her choice and brings George to meet the family. It's serious. But then she bumps into Robert at the mechanic. While waiting for their cars, they go bowling—and end up kissing. Cassandra panics and runs off.Trying to make things work with George, she kisses him too—but realizes there's no real spark and breaks up with him.She throws away Dr. Susie's book and rushes to find Robert at the town's Chinese New Year celebration. They kiss and enjoy the fireworks together.

This week, we received our annual audit visit from corporate! That's right, The Chairman not only graced us with his presence, but he demanded we deliver to you this episode: “Grave Mistake: BÖC Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. One could argue that selling 24M albums would negate “Shoulda Been Huge” treatment. However, when most folks can only name 3 songs by this band, and one of them is due to an SNL skit, we think they fit the bill. This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category; however, there is a strong case to be made that they've been largely forgotten as innovators and architects of what we know as heavy metal. We think they should be remembered as titans of hard rock and metal! Hope ya dig!Songs this week include:Blue Öyster Cult - “Transmaniacon MC” from Blue Öyster Cult(1972)Blue Öyster Cult - “The Red & The Black” from Tyranny And Mutation (1973)Blue Öyster Cult - “Flaming Telepaths” from Secret Treaties (1974)Blue Öyster Cult - “Tenderloin” from Agents Of Fortune (1976)Blue Öyster Cult - “R.U. Chris and Sean begin march down musical memory lane remembering past concerts of U2, REM, Echo and the Bunnymen, RUSH, and REO Speedwagon on an everything 80's music rant - before remembering an esteemed member of the Arizona congressional delegation - Andy Biggs - is an accomplished musician. Andy is also leading Karin Taylor Robson by some 30 or 40 points in the Republican primary for Governor of Arizona - depending on what polls you look at - and was recently endorsed by President Trump - further complicating Karin's path to victory. Karin, meanwhile, was suspiciously absent at the Arizona Chamber Update from Capitol Hill Luncheon - which included Congressman Biggs, along with Juan Ciscomani, Eli Crane and Abe Hamadeh. AND, we can finally answer the question of #WhereIsMarkKelly? He attended the Update along with Arizona junior Senator Ruben Gallego to prove to the audience that the policies and politics of business and trade are not their strong suits. Chris and Sean remember the mentorship and fortitude of former Congressman Bob Stump and continue to marvel at his former Chief of Staff, Lisa Atkins, to whom they owe much for their love and understanding of politics. In fact, Arizona owes much to an Arizona delegation that has historically punched above it's weight with giant figures like Ernest McFarland, Barry Goldwater, John Rhodes, Mo Udall, John McCain and John Kyl. Regardless of our differences, the better angels of our delegation have always looked out for Arizona. #MustListen Follow Light Beer Dark Money on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LightBeerDarkMoney/ Follow Light Beer Dark Money on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lightbeerdarkmoney/ Follow Light Beer Dark Money on Twitter: https://twitter.com/LBDMshow Follow Light Beer Dark Money on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/light-beer-dark-money/ Link to the Light Beer Dark Money Blog: https://lightbeerdarkmoney.com/hypocrisy-and-the-aoc-oh-sandy/

One of the greatest rock bands in our generation was REO Speedwagon. At the beginning of this year, we received word that REO was officially no longer. But that doesn't mean that guitarist, song writter and lead vocalist Kevin Cronin is stopping. We had the opportunity to speak with Kevin not only about his upcoming tour (with many of the REO family members), but we spoke about his dad being in World War II, why REO broke up, how Stephen Stills is one of his all time heroes and a hint of his new book.
RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot open Episode 328 with some REO Speedwagon, a Morgan Wallen SNL debacle, and—sadly—no area code trivia. But it's all prelude to a full-on Mariners therapy session, as Mitch wonders why Gino Suárez and Teoscar Hernández are thriving elsewhere while the M's bats look like they're still in spring training. He also recalls a moment in a locker room with George Foreman that changed how he views leadership. First up: it's the Mariners No-Table with Brady Farkas (SI Now, Refuse to Lose Pod) and Joe Doyle (Over Slot). The crew breaks down the split with the A's, early warning signs with Julio, what Dan Wilson got wrong as manager, and whether this offense truly has enough talent to support the elite rotation. Then Danny Kelly of The Ringer joins to explain why all the top mock drafts have Seattle passing on offensive linemen at pick 18—and why fans might want to prepare for a linebacker, receiver, or safety instead. He also breaks down how the Seahawks could approach the quarterback class on Day 2. Finally, Jason La Canfora weighs in on the Seahawks' offseason: Is Sam Darnold a long-term solution or just Geno 2.0? Why does John Schneider refuse to spend on O-linemen? And which position group is so deep this year, every team could draft one? GUESTS • Mariners No-Table | Joe Doyle (Over Slot) & Brady Farkas (SI Now) • Danny Kelly | NFL Draft Analyst, The Ringer • Jason La Canfora | NFL Insider, Washington Post TABLE OF CONTENTS 1:00 | Mitch & Hotshot: Morgan Wallen SNL chaos, no area code trivia, REO Speedwagon deep cuts 6:35 | Mariners Misery, Pt. II: Roster rehash, ownership frustration, and George Foreman wisdom 22:47 | GUEST: Mariners No-Table — Joe Doyle & Brady Farkas dissect a frustrating A's series, Dan Wilson's early miscues, JP Crawford's arm, Julio's approach, and if the lineup is actually good enough 48:00 | GUEST: Danny Kelly (The Ringer) — Why O-line is being ignored in mocks, Matthew Golden's fit, the WR vs. trench pick debate, and possible QB targets on Day 2 1:13:25 | GUEST: Jason La Canfora — Why Darnold might stick, GMs avoiding O-line spending, Cooper Kupp's future, and how this year's DT draft class is historically loaded 1:35:52 | The Other Stuff Segment: Happy Gilmore 2, all four No. 1 seeds reach Final Four, Cal Raleigh signs 6-year deal, Russell Wilson joins the Giants, Resorts World fined over Shohei interpreter scandal, Carlin Pickens throws record 78 mph softball pitch, Rachel Uchitel gets engaged, all five Robert Morris starters hit transfer portal, Ice Cube delivers Dodgers trophy, Bronny James scores 39 in G League, Petino fan photobomb gets $200K offer, Jessica Simpson snake sperm claim, Richard Chamberlain, Dennis Arndt, RIPs: Dave Pelz, Dick Neuheisel Headlines: Idaho bans breast exposure and truck nuts, cop spikes office coffee with Viagra, babysitter finds man under child's bed

REO Speedwagon have been one of the most reliable American rock bands for over 50 years. Certain members may come and go, but that name, that quality, and the excellent songs of lead singer Kevin Cronin have been a constant for decades. Unfortunately, that recently came to an end with the departure of founding member Bruce Hall. Plus, Bruce took the name with him. The good news is that most of the same players are playing most of the same songs you've grown to love and rely on, they're just called the Kevin Cronin Band now. Kevin joins us this week to explain the new reality before he goes out on tour with Styx and Don Felder where he'll play the entire Hi-Infidelity album as well as the hits. We also discuss his relationship with original guitarist Gary Richrath, the stories behind songs and albums, how they became known for ballads, and much more. Kevin is a genuinely nice man and he's working hard to continue to deliver the goods (and set the record straight). We're lucky he's still at it. www.kevincronin.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod
In this episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we turn up the volume and dive into one of the biggest rock albums of the early 80s—REO Speedwagon’s Hi Infidelity. Released in 1980, this album catapulted the band to superstardom, blending arena rock anthems with heartfelt power ballads that defined the sound of the decade. Hi Infidelity is packed with iconic tracks like "Keep On Loving You," "Take It on the Run," and "Don’t Let Him Go," showcasing the band’s ability to balance soaring melodies with raw emotion. The album was a massive commercial success, becoming the best-selling rock album of 1981 and cementing REO Speedwagon’s place in music history. In this episode, we’ll explore the making of Hi Infidelity, the band’s transition from a hard rock sound to a more radio-friendly style, and the lasting impact of this record on classic rock. We’ll also discuss how REO Speedwagon’s mix of rock and romance resonated with audiences and helped shape the power ballad movement of the 80s. Join us on Dem Vinyl Boyz as we relive the magic of Hi Infidelity, an album that defined an era and continues to be a staple in rock history.

This is Play That Rock n' Roll's interview with former TNA Ring Announcer David Penzer about his new book, "SITTING RINGSIDE, Volume 2: The XWF, TNA and Life After Wrestling". And as an added bonus, we are joined by a special guest co-host: AAron Camaro from the Decibel Geek podcast! We discuss some of the topics Dave covered in the book, including an infamous confrontation between Rowdy Roddy Piper and Vince Russo, but most of this interview is actually about music! When Dave was here last time, he mentioned that he is a huge rock music fan and that he's seen over a thousand concerts. Since we're a music show, I figured this would be a great opportunity for Dave to share some stories and opinions on various rock and roll topics. In this conversation, Dave shares some hot takes on bands like KISS, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Chicago, and even Pablo Cruise. He also talks about his interactions with Gene Simmons and Rickey Medlocke from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Plus he tells us about some of the best concerts he's ever seen. This episode of Seeing Them Live features an in-depth and in-person conversation with Ray the Roadie and Hollywood Mike, hosts of the Rock and Roll Chicago podcast. Joined by producer and co-host Doug Florzak, the episode was recorded inside the Illinois Rock and Roll Museum on Route 66 in downtown Joliet, Illinois, where the Rock and Roll Chicago podcast is also recorded. The Rock and Roll Chicago podcast provides a platform for bands and musicians from the Chicago area, delving into the history of rock and roll in Chicago and Illinois, the current scene, and the challenges and opportunities for musicians today. Mike and Ray share humorous anecdotes, such as Mike jokingly proposing 'The Procrastinators' as a name for his next punk band, and Mike mentioning his varied musical activities, including performing with bands like Cadillac Groove and Mike and the Stillmasters, and his solo work. Mike also uncovers a rich musical heritage after meeting a cousin who fronts a Zydeco band in Louisiana, leading him to discover his extended family's significant contributions to various facets of the entertainment industry. Ray recounts his multifaceted career journey, involving roadie work, being a firefighter for 28 years, and later diving back into music and podcasting post-retirement. Personal anecdotes include Ray's memories of his first concert, seeing Chicago Transit Authority, and his best concert experience with ZZ Top, where he enjoyed backstage access and partied with the band. Mike fondly recalls his first concert, a Billy Squire show with Def Leppard as the opener, and his best concert experience, which was a transformative Buddy Guy performance that inspired him to become a musician. The episode concludes with Ray and Mike previewing their plans for upcoming podcast episodes and discussing the Illinois Rock and Roll Museum's ongoing development and various exhibits, including guitars from Buddy Guy, and its status as a non-profit organization reliant on donations and memberships for support.BANDS: 4 Non-Blondes, Alison Krauss, Billy Joel, Billy Squire, Buddy Guy, Cadillac Groove, Def Leppard, Flat Cats, Iron Maiden, Joker, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mabel's, Mike and the Still Masters, Outlaws, Rage Against A Machine, REO Speedwagon, REM, Robert Plant, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Train, Vulgar Boatmen, Wrought Iron Soul, ZZ Top.VENUES: Alpine Valley, Chicago Theater, El Macomber, Illinois Rock and Roll Museum, Illinois Rock and Roll Museum on Route 66, International Amphitheater, Mabel's, Ravinia, Rialto Square Theater, Rosemount Horizon, Route 66, Taste of Westmont, The Amphitheater, The Flat Cats, The Forge, The Riviera Theater. Send us a textAuthor, actor, and rocker, among other endeavors Peter Berwick joins hosts David C. Gross and Tom Semioli to discuss his book TOO WILD TO TAME: THE STORY OF THE BOYZZ independently published and available now.In the late 1970s, Chicago and its surrounding environs was fertile ground for such emerging acts as Cheap Trick, Styx, and REO Speedwagon – to cite a select few. One collective which failed to grab the brass ring was the only band that mattered: The Boyzz! Berwick documents one of the wildest rides in the history of rock and roll. Buckle up!
Vision Quest was released in theaters February 15, 1985. Based on a book that was hot in the young adult space, it featured a young Matthew Modine as Loudon Swain - a high school wrestler from Spokane, Washington who is looking to accomplish something big in his life. While the movie had limited appeal beyond teenagers (it only grossed $13 million), cable TV and video rental stores gave the movie continued life among teenagers for many years. A big reason it continued to draw 80s teens and carry such strong nostalgia today is the soundtrack. Put together by John Kalodner for Geffen Records, it featured some of the hottest pop and rock artists of the day and sold over 1 million copies in the US. Madonna, who was hot off her Like A Virgin Tour, contributes two songs - the unreleased as a single in the US Gambler and mega hit Crazy For You - and she had a cameo in the film singing them both. Journey offered Only The Young from the Frontiers sessions and the video, like Crazy For You, featured scenes from the film, helping the singles sell big numbers. Those two songs along with Red Rider's Lunatic Fringe set the tone for the film and make the songs and movie so intertwined. Some songs from bands like The Style Council, Don Henley and Dio might be overlooked as background music to certain scenes, songs like Change by John Waite (written by the legend Holly Knight) and Lunatic Fringe really keep you energized and engaged in Loudon's quest to drop 22 pounds and beat the unbeatable Shute on the wrestling mat. You have the tender Crazy For You for the romantic scenes, Journey for the training scenes and lots of rock and pop royalty. Even great songs by Berlin, Quarterflash and REO Speedwagon were left off the soundtrack but appear in the movie, including some solid work by Tangerine Dream. Maybe we like this film because as two former teenage boys, we could relate to what this guy was going through. But we continue to like the soundtrack because it had killer songs (with a couple of clunkers) that stand the test of time and play a huge role in the film. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. What better way to kick things off than where it all began? Here's a look back at episode one and our conversation with Jim Peterik. ABOUT JIM PETERIKSinger, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist Jim Peterik is best known as a founding member of the band Survivor and the co-writer of their Grammy-winning double platinum #1 hit single, “Eye of the Tiger.” But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Thirty-five of Jim's songs have appeared on the Billboard Pop chart, including seven Top 10 singles. His first major success came when his original band, Ides of March, took the Peterik-penned “Vehicle” to the #2 position on the Pop chart in 1970, spawning cover versions by Chet Baker and Shirley Bassey. After a stint as a solo artist with Epic Records, Jim formed Survivor in 1979, penning a string of hits for the band, including “I Can't Hold Back,” “High On You,” “The Search is Over,” “Burning Heart,” and “Is This Love.” While still writing hits for his own group, Jim forged a successful partnership with the members of 38 Special, co-writing classic songs, including “Rockin' Into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” and “Caught Up In You.” Widely respected as a top-notch collaborator, Jim has co-written successful songs with a number of artists, including the Beach Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, the Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Mindi Abair. The long list of those who have covered his compositions includes Paul Anka, Gloria Gaynor, Tony Orlando, Reba McEntire, Larry Gatlin, Blackhawk, and The Outlaws. He is the co-author, with Dave Austin, of Songwriting for Dummies.

Dana Edwards has written two NYTimes crosswords, and both have been uniformly excellent. This one had an ingenious theme to it (not that his first was a slouch, but this one just had a little extra sparkle), and the clueing was particularly tricky (i.e., great!). There's simply no other way to describe 53D, Kind of place that's beside the point?, ONES (nice!); 54A, Random number generator, DIE (duh!); and 19A, Valley in which it's easy to get a cab, NAPA (brilliant!).It's also Tuesday, time for our Triplet Tuesday segment, and Jean gives a quick demo of why, when she's in the zone and in the grid, she is, in the words of Sia, unstoppable.Show note imagery: REO Speedwagon (the vehicle, not the band)We love feedback! The guys get into the depths of the lyrics to REO Speedwagon's monster ballad Keep On Loving You. Known for its chorus proclaiming a never-ending love, the verses tell a much bleaker story that is often overshadowed.
Donald Trump thinks Call Her Daddy is a dummy, Teebs takes over the Detroit Tigers, Hurricane Milton & Lieutenant Dan, Drew's flat tire, Maz's poor vision, Marilyn Manson assault investigation, Lisa Marie's new book, and Jim's List: Songs with "Detroit" in the title. Drew missed Game 3 of the ALDS due to ANOTHER flat tire. Thankfully Derrick and AAA saved the day. Josh Teebs has become the Detroit Tigers superfan and we love it. Hurricane Milton destroyed Florida. Against every piece of advice Stuttering John didn't evacuate, but don't worry as he has plenty of booze. We check in with Tom Mazawey. After he disconnects himself and blames Marc, he guarantees a Lions victory over the Dallas Cowboys. At the Tiger's game yesterday Maz rudely snubbed KR Gibson and blamed it on his poor vision. Lieutenant Dan or Lieutenant Scam? Lieutenant Dan rode out Hurricane Milton in a boat. REO Speedwagon could not be reached for comment. He's been offered a streaming deal for some reason, but the doxxers are pointing out that he seems to be a grifter. Talk Tuah's audience is dwindling. Big surprise. Matty B should never have aged. Joy Mode brings you the Bonerline. Use promo code DREW. Call or text 209-66-Boner to communicate with the show. Diddy is now DEMANDING bail for the 3rd time. An old video has resurfaced of Diddy being really handsy with Justin Bieber. He's either patting him down to check for a wire, or he just likes touching Biebs' chest. Some people are saying both things are true. Piers Morgan interviews Diddy hater Jaguar Wright. Jay Z and Beyonce didn't like it so they called Piers immediately to get it edited. Marilyn Manson is ugly. He also isn't out of the weeds with his sexual assault allegations. Garth Brooks' accuser dropped a new text message from Garth. Is this really enough to convince us he's guilty? Call Her Daddy's Alex Cooper can't stop apologizing for her Kamala interview. One of her biggest fans, Donald Trump pulls out all the stops and calls her a dummy. Tua Tagovailoa is busted for his wife sharing a pro-Trump post. The new Lisa Marie Presley book sounds juicy. She lived with her dead son's body for two months. Michael Jackson was a virgin when they got married. Bill Maher gets Al Pacino's and Mick Jagger's sloppy seconds and thirds, respectfully. The Dark Side of Reality TV: Joe Millionaire. Something's going on and somebody's not telling me something. Robert Saleh BLOWN OUT by Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets. Michigan coach Chris Bryant was busted for getting into it with Washington fans. BUT...It will be handled internally and nothing will happen to Chris Bryant. Nothing to see here. New lawsuit against Kanye by a guy that was just fired by Kanye. Meghan Markle remains the worst. Jim's List: Songs with "Detroit" in the Title. Gene Simmons was a guest judge on Dancing with the Stars and he creeped viewers out with his comments. Visit Our Presenting Sponsor Hall Financial – Michigan's highest rated mortgage company.
