Our Best Breakout Album this week, as we start the month of June '26, is "Hi Infidelity" by REO Speedwagon! It took a while for this Windy City group to find huge commercial success, but Epic Records stuck with them, and in November of 1980 came what would be a 10x Platinum Album, featuring hits like "Keep on Loving You," "Take it on the Run" and "In Your Letter." The album spent a record 15-weeks at the top of the Billboard Album Chart, becoming the LP of the year in 1981. Next week, Frank and I will take a look at another Breakout Album, "Silk Degrees" by Boz Scaggs. Enjoy!

After years of hearing his co-hosts rave about Styx, Joe Boclair finally made it to see them live at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Austin—the one built right into the Circuit of the Americas Formula One racetrack. He even bought a Mr. Roboto shirt as a playful nod to Paul Zotter, Ken Gregory, and Tom Corkran. (His wife Sarah came along too, naturally.) The triple bill featured Don Felder running through Eagles classics like "Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane," followed by the Kevin Cronin Band—yes, that's REO Speedwagon minus the REO Speedwagon name, possibly due to some contractual drama. Despite being in his seventies, Cronin's vocals were impressively strong. The crowd was unusually diverse for a prog rock show, featuring some unforgettable characters including one older gentleman sporting punk-rock style with blue-pink spiky hair and Batman tattoos. Then Styx took the stage. **Larry Gowan's theatrical keyboard theatrics** in his sparkly purple coat were mesmerizing, while Tommy Shaw remained refreshingly laid-back, content to let others shine while delivering impressive vocals. J.Y. held down center stage with his sharp metallic green Stratocaster. Tommy's performance on "Man in the Wilderness" exceeded all expectations—until lightning struck nearby and forced an evacuation during "Castle Walls." In 1981, the music world was still riding the wave of disco's afterglow while carving out the sounds that would define the decade. Rock was dominant on the charts, with bands like Journey, REO Speedwagon, and Foreigner packing arenas, while new wave acts such as The Go-Go's and Duran Duran were beginning to reshape pop with synthesizers and bright, punchy hooks. MTV hadn't launched yet—that would come in August of '81—so radio play and word of mouth still ruled how fans discovered music. It was a year where the classic rock giants coexisted with the fresh sounds of new wave, setting the stage for an explosion of styles in the 80s. Fast-forward to 1991, and the landscape looked completely different. Grunge had crashed onto the scene with Nirvana's Nevermind, turning the polished glam metal of the late 80s into yesterday's news almost overnight. Hip-hop was no longer underground—it was chart-topping, with acts like Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest pushing boundaries while mainstream rap stars like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were everywhere. Meanwhile, pop was thriving with Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Boyz II Men dominating radio. Unlike 1981, when MTV was just getting started, by 1991 music videos were the cultural centerpiece, shaping not just what people heard but what they wore and how they acted. She heads to work at the advertising agency. Her assistant Dana is getting married, but Cassandra's boyfriend, Peter, refuses to go to the wedding with her because he thinks weddings are boring.At the wedding, Cassandra is seated at a table full of children—except for one other adult, a man named Robert. They really hit it off, but she leaves before they can exchange any contact information.Later, she's hanging out with her mom and sister, who help her see that Peter isn't right for her. It becomes painfully obvious when, on a date to the batting cages, she just watches him hit balls the entire time—until she finally leaves.One day, while walking down the street, she sees Dr. Susie doing a book signing. Her sister insists they go in, and Cassandra is once again taken with Dr. Susie's advice.The next day, while walking her dog, Cassandra bumps into Robert—who is also walking his dog. Sparks fly, and he asks her out on a date!They go play putt-putt and then transition to pool. They have the best time, and she kisses him on the cheek.The problem? There are too many sparks—something Dr. Susie warns against. According to her, Cassandra should choose someone boring and dependable.Luckily, she soon meets a boring guy named George and decides to give it a shot.So, she starts spending time with both men. With Robert, it's all fun and excitement—he even brings her and her mom to an REO Speedwagon concert. With George, it's formal dinners and predictability.While discussing her dilemma with her mom and sister, opinions are split: Mom is Team Robert, but her sister believes Robert contradicts everything Dr. Susie preaches.Eventually, Cassandra makes her choice and brings George to meet the family. It's serious.But then she bumps into Robert at the mechanic. While waiting for their cars, they go bowling—and end up kissing. Cassandra panics and runs off.Trying to make things work with George, she kisses him too—but realizes there's no real spark and breaks up with him.She throws away Dr. Susie's book and rushes to find Robert at the town's Chinese New Year celebration. They kiss and enjoy the fireworks together.
