The Best Stretch for a Herniated Disc (That You're Not Doing)

Back In Shape

The best stretch for a herniated disc isn't the cobra or hanging from a bar — it's a rolled-up towel, and here's why it works. If you've got a herniated disc (a slipped disc, disc bulge or prolapsed disc) at L4/L5 or L5/S1 and you've been handed the usual stretches — the cobra, knee hugs, hanging — this session explains the one that actually addresses the root cause. A herniated disc happens through two forces working together: compression, and a flattening of your lower back's natural curve. The best stretch has to oppose both. A simple rolled-up towel under the lumbar spine does exactly that — supporting the lordosis while gently decompressing the segment.

If you have ever been left completely incapacitated simply by bending over to put on a sock or getting out of your car, you are not alone. It can feel deeply frustrating and mysterious when a herniated disc or sciatica keeps flaring up for seemingly no reason at all. However, once you understand the actual mechanics of the human spine, these unpredictable flare-ups make perfect sense. Unlike peripheral joints such as your elbow or shoulder, which you can consciously control and move independently, your spine is a stack of vertebral segments connected by ligaments. You have zero conscious control over individual segments like L4-L5 or L5-S1. When you suffer a lower back injury, you lose the structural tension at that specific segment, creating a weak link in the chain. Because you cannot consciously lock that single joint down, any sudden or unguarded movement will take the path of least resistance, funnelling directly into that damaged, wobbly segment. This is why traditional advice to "just wiggle it" or stretch often backfires—it forces more motion into an area that desperately needs stability. To stop the cycle of flare-ups, you must learn to use the "override switch." By learning to engage your core and stabilise the relationship between your ribcage and pelvis, you can protect the vulnerable segments of your lumbar spine, allowing the damaged ligaments the time they need to heal. Key Topics Covered

Why do autoimmune symptoms flare after stress, poor sleep, illness, or major life events? If autoimmune disease were simply the immune system attacking the body, symptoms would be constant. But for many people, flares follow a pattern. So what's actually driving them? In this episode, Dr. Alison Danby explains a system in the body that most autoimmune patients are never taught about in the doctor's office, and why understanding it may completely change how we think about autoimmune disease. You'll learn: • Why stress is the #1 trigger for autoimmune flares • Why cortisol may not be the real problem • The hidden communication system between the brain and the immune system • Why chronic stress changes immune behavior • The surprising research on stress resilience from Navy SEAL training • Why autoimmune disease might be responding to signals from somewhere else Once you understand how these systems interact, autoimmune disease stops looking random. And that changes everything. Next Episode Why pushing through fatigue may actually make autoimmune disease worse. Ready to go deeper? There is no magic treatment for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, POTS, or mast cell activation disorders, but there is strategy. In this episode of Bendy Bodies, Dr. Linda Bluestein is joined by Dacre Knight, MD, founding Medical Director of the UVA Health EDS and Hypermobility Disorders Center, for a practical and deeply thoughtful conversation about how complex chronic conditions should actually be treated. Rather than chasing quick fixes, Dr. Bluestein and Dr. Knight explore sequencing. What to address first when everything is flaring, how to balance short-term symptom relief with long-term sustainability, and why overtreatment can sometimes cause more harm than good. They discuss the pitfalls of siloed care, the insurance barriers that complicate physical therapy, and the importance of starting low, going slow, and minimizing treatment burden. The episode also tackles difficult but essential questions: What does “getting better” really mean in lifelong connective tissue disorders? How do clinicians avoid reactionary prescribing? And how can patients recognize the difference between a thoughtful care plan and a rushed one? Takeaways: There is rarely a single “magic” treatment for EDS, POTS, or MCAS—progress usually comes from strategic sequencing. Overtreating symptoms without addressing underlying patterns can create long-term setbacks. Physical therapy must be individualized in hypermobility, with an emphasis on pacing and trust. Shared decision-making improves outcomes, especially when treatment goals align with what brings the patient meaning and quality of life. Minimally disruptive medicine matters, reducing cognitive, financial, and physical treatment burden is part of effective care. Find the episode transcript here. Why Your Herniated Disc Keeps Flaring Up: The Truth About Spinal Stability

Many people struggling with a herniated disc find themselves trapped in a cycle of recovery and re-injury. You make great progress in the gym, only to "tweak" your back doing something as simple as picking up a barbell or a cup of tea. In this session, we break down why these setbacks happen and why your rehabilitation must be "on" all the time. Using a real-world example of a member who executed a perfect hip hinge but failed the "setup" and "pack away," we illustrate that the injury doesn't care if you're mid-set or just reaching for your shoes. Stability is a skill that must become a subconscious habit to protect your spine during the thousands of unregulated movements you perform every single day.We also dive deep into the clinical reality of conditions like Bertolotti syndrome, spinal stenosis, and post-surgical recovery. A common misconception is that a specific diagnosis changes the fundamental requirement for stability; however, whether you have a congenital abnormality or a post-surgical spine, the goal remains the same: learning to stabilise the spine in neutral to prevent micro-movements from irritating damaged tissue. We explain the "why" behind morning stiffness—focusing on inflammatory build-up and nocturnal spinal mechanics—and offer a clear roadmap for transitioning from relief strategies into progressive load-bearing to ensure your back becomes resilient enough for the demands of real life.Key Topics Covered

I talk about how your skin is biologically wired to respond to emotional stress and what that means for your acne, rashes, or flare-ups that seem to appear out of nowhere. If you're navigating chronic skin issues that no serum seems to solve, this episode is your roadmap to finally understanding what's really going on and what to do about it!

STEG is a research initiative that aims to provide a better understanding of structural change, productivity, and growth in low- and middle-income countries.  For many economies in the Global South, fossil fuel extraction has been both a blessing and a curse. Nowhere more so than Nigeria, where oil production generates huge revenues, but also creates an environmental and social burden for the people who live in oil producing regions. Arinze Nwokolo of Lagos Business School has investigated one aspect of this burden: how gas flaring that occurs as part of the oil production process affects local agriculture. He talks to Tim Phillips about the dramatic impact it has on agricultural productivity, and how the policy alternatives can change those outcomes. Today we were honored to host Mayor Lori Blong of Midland. Lori is a proud Midland native and previously served on the Midland City Council and as Mayor Pro Tempore before being elected Mayor in 2022. In addition to her duties as Mayor, Lori is a Founder and Partner of Octane Energy. She began her career as an educator in the Permian Basin and has deep ties to the community. We were thrilled to hear her insights on the Midland energy sector and broader community. In our discussion, Lori shares data on Midland's demographics and consistent population growth, highlighting that the city's largest age groups are 0-10 and 30-40 years old. We touch on the influx of workers and families from across the US and the world, growing demand for retail and lifestyle amenities, and recent commercial and national defense developments at the Midland Air and Space Port, including the development of a high-speed corridor for supersonic and hypersonic testing. Lori shares how Midland is addressing worker shortages through partnerships with local universities, the city's pro-development attitude, her inspiration to run for Mayor, priorities in improving community education and healthcare, and navigating the complexities of political campaigning. We discuss Lori's working partnerships with Congressman Pfluger and Senator Sparks to secure federal and state support, major infrastructure and transportation projects in Midland and the Permian Basin, and the critical support that the Permian Strategic Partnership (website linked here) and private investments have provided to bolster infrastructure and community services. We also cover Midland's long-term water planning, the importance of reinvesting in Midland, the city's high GDP relative to its population, opportunities to leverage excess natural gas for power generation, the city's confidence in its economic resilience, and much more. We ended by asking Lori for her vision of Midland in ten years. As you will hear, Lori is incredibly passionate about helping her community and we greatly enjoyed the discussion. Mike Bradley kicked us off by highlighting that the key word to describe market action right now is "digestion" as Trump begins nominating his Cabinet picks and investors begin to ponder how they might affect future policy. On the crude oil market front, WTI has traded sideways to slightly lower (~$69/bbl) this past week due to a surge in the U.S. dollar which is creating a short-term headwind for dollar denominated commodities. WTI prompt spread has moved into contango, signaling a loosening oil market. OPEC recently lowered its 2025 oil growth assumptions (again) which likely forces them at their December OPEC meeting to delay unwinding current production curtailments until sometime in Q1. On the broader equity market front, the S&P 500 was down a couple percent as markets were oversold prior to the election, jumped by ~4-5% post-election, and are now pulling back as Trump's equity market euphoria looks to be fading. He noted that broader equity markets will be laser focused on NVIDIA's results after the close on Wednesday, so expect pent-up market volatility as investors are hoping that Blackwell revenues are exceeding expectations and that the AI momentum trade is still intact. On the energy equity front, it was one of the few S&P sectors up last week (~1.5%) and energy investors seem to be very enthusiastic with Trump's picks for the Department of Interior (Doug Burgum) and the Department of Energy (Chris Wright). He ended by noting that a handful of SMR (nuclear equities) rallied 15-20% on expectations that the new Administration would be favorable to this technology. Jeff Tillery added his perspective and questions to the discussion. We hope you enjoy the conversation with Lori as much as we did. She was fabulous! Thanks to you all!

Resolute Podcast

Are you dealing with your anger and insecurity? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are reading 1 Samuel 18. I've titled this chapter "Allies and Adversaries." At this point, jealousy is ticking down in King Saul against David, and let's see how this turns out in verses 9-12: And Saul eyed David from that day on. The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, "I will pin David to the wall." But David evaded him twice. Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. — 1 Samuel 18:9-12 If you have been following me for this series, you see a strong contrast here. Two men, both anointed by Samuel, would be kings of Israel. But now, a harmful spirit rushes upon Saul, and David, as commissioned, tries to soothe this harmful spirit with worship to the Lord. David is fighting all kinds of battles, and they are all battles with a spiritual enemy. This time, the battle happens to be with an evil spirit possessing an ally, and the weapon in his hand is a weapon of worship. On the other hand, Saul holds a weapon of war in his hand and will misuse it against his ally, whom he perceives to be an adversary. Insecure leaders act this way and often fight the wrong enemy. They see every attack as an attack against them because they incorrectly associate their identity with the attack. Therefore, when allies try to help, it only seems to hurt and then they hurl words or harmful objects in their hands. King Saul is experiencing an undeniably harmful spirit. Those of you prone to anger know exactly what this feels like. You become consumed with rage when you perceive an attack. Then, all reason turns off, and you hurl words and objects. Unfortunately, you sometimes do this to people who are innocent of guilt and might be trying to help. You have to stop acting that way and get your heart and hands right with the Lord. Looking back to the beginning of Saul's story, we see that this is not a sudden progression. It has been brewing for a long time. But Saul has never addressed it, and now it will result in a miserable end. Thus, Saul will become a lasting example of someone who starts with a flare and finishes with a fizzle. That's not the goal. The goal is to finish with a flare, but the only way there is to escape the devil's snare. If you are possessed with anger, deal with it. Confess it to the Lord. Acknowledge your insecurities. Repent and reconcile with others. And for those who have started with a fizzle, you need to know it is never too late to finish with a flare. #SpiritualWarfare, #AngerAndInsecurity, #WeaponsOfWorship Ask This: How do you handle jealousy or insecurity when they arise, and what steps can you take to ensure you don't act out in anger towards those who are allies? How can you use worship or positive actions to combat negative emotions and conflicts, similar to how David used his music to soothe Saul's harmful spirit? Do This: Deal with your anger. Pray This: Lord, help me recognize and address the root of my anger and insecurity. Guide me to respond with worship and grace rather than hostility. Grant me the strength to see my allies clearly and to handle conflicts with wisdom and humility. Amen. Play This: Raise A Hallelujah.

Oil producers waste a lot of natural gas. Last year they flared 150 billion cubic meters of associated gas into the atmosphere, equivalent to about half the global carbon emissions of aviation over a 30-year period. So why are oil producers burning a valuable commodity like gas? In this episode, Shayle talks to Tomás de Oliveira Bredariol, an energy and environmental policy analyst focused on methane at the IEA. So far, multiple major global initiatives haven't made a dent in flare volumes, which have remained largely flat since 2010. Shayle and Tomás talk about the reasons why and the potential solutions, covering topics like: The nine countries responsible for about three quarters of flare volumes Why we don't just build more pipelines Why oil wells may choose expensive diesel instead of powering their equipment with associated gas Converting gas into more valuable forms, like compressed natural gas, liquid natural gas, or methanol The potential for regulation and financial incentives to push producers to cut flare volumes Recommended resources International Energy Agency: Curtailing Methane Emissions from Fossil Fuel Operations National Renewable Energy Laboratory: Stranded Natural Gas Roadmap World Bank: Global Gas Flaring Data Catalyst is brought to you by Anza Renewables, a data, technology, and services platform for solar and storage buyers.
