Hazel Higgins Barker, age 96, of Richmond VA, passed away peacefully September 22, 2023. She will be missed dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Linwood Barker, and her nine siblings. She is survived by her daughter Betty B Tilman (Kenneth), grandsons Carter Tilman (Ashley) and Aaron Tilman, and a great grandson, Maddux Tilman. Interment private. In April 2021, singer-songwriter Dave Englund called his longtime friend, bassist and songwriter Steve Wolfe and asked if he'd be interested in creating an acoustic/electric Americana band, leaving the loud guitars in the rearview and opting for a more vocal-driven, vintage, thumping sound. Steve agreed. After running a series of specific ads tailored to each musician's seat, the phone calls started coming in. Drummer, percussionist and vocalist Mark Vadnais showed up to play on Dave's back deck. Immediately the snaky soulful grooves started happening. Two weeks later, Chris Taylor answered the ad, jumped on deck, opened his Gretsch case, and delivered his unique guitar vibe, insuring his ticket in. In November, an old acquaintance of Dave and Steve's, violinist and mandolin player Ernie Lau got the phone call asking him to come jam and see if he'd be a good fit for this new group. His focus on classical violin as opposed to bluegrass fiddle brought a new and needed color, and he joined in November. Rounding out the band a month later in December was pedal steel guitarist Jim Wishart who answered the final ad, having been a guitarist for many years but only recently started playing the steel guitar, his musicality and playing coated every song he played on. I have sung this song a million times, at the top of my lungs in my car, but I did not realize the song David chose was by a man originally, Badfinger. David is self-proclaimed to be fascinated with death.  He is in a band "In Lieu of Flowers" and chose their name in association with death.  David just loves the colorfulness of this song.  It is so rich with all the instruments and then they back off.  It's like just the music alone could move someone to tears because it conveys such emotion...and then you add the lyrics!! This week, SHP founders, Derek Gregoire and Keith Ellis, are joined by Attorney Keith McManus, from McManus Estate Planning. They will discuss how important it is to have a team of problem solvers working on your behalf, when planning for retirement. Next, In Lieu of the market report update, Keith and Derek will share two real life stories of couples they have worked with. The first story is about a couple named Steve and Liz, who came in to the SHP office with about 4 weeks to go before their planned retirement date. They had been working with an advisor, who never helped develop an actual plan for them. They came in for a second opinion and Derek will share how he was able to help. The second story is about a couple named Charlie and Sue. They didn’t think they had enough money to retire, but it turns out they weren’t focusing on the right areas. Keith will share what he did for them and how he guided them to retirement sooner than they thought.

You probably know Kimberly Williams-Paisley as Annie Banks in the popular Father of the Bride movies, from one of her many TV roles or as the wife of country music star, Brad Paisley. The NY Times bestselling author of "Where the Light Gets in: Losing My Mother Only to Find Her Again" opens up to Roxanne (who lost her own mother, Viola Ohlbaum just days prior to recording this interview) on a special episode of "Just the Right Book." Kimberly documents her mother’s rare form of dementia and tracks her family’s actions and emotions through the process and her death last year. “My mother didn’t want us to talk about her illness; she wanted it to be the family secret,” says Williams-Paisley. While she wanted to honor her mother’s wishes and “protect her pride, it was a mistake and I regret it. Four days a week, at 9am, for 20 minutes, the school becomes nearly silent.  Students gather in groups of 10-15 students all over the school to read with teachers.  Almost all of these reading breaks hum with engaged reading.   Engaged readers are not hard to spot.  They ignore distractions.  They continue reading through the morning announcements.  They settle into a peace and contentment we so rarely see in high schools today.   The enthusiasm for reading in students and in teachers is easy to see as well–they finish one book and have plans for the next, they bring in books to read and to share with each other.  They continually invite, rather than police, kids into reading, simply because they know how important it is.   Our school is committed to developing a community of readers.  I believe it happened because we hired a principal who used to own a bookstore.  Neal Moylan responded to growing apathy about reading with time for pleasure reading.  And, he tripled the English teachers library budget for them all to start classroom libraries, then also allocated money for any teacher in any content area to personalize their classroom library.  That with a shrinking budget. The teachers you ll meet today are not English teachers.   But they are passionate about reading, and they are advocates for individual kids.
