Today's Destination: Chickamauga National Park: Part 2 of Chattanooga episode. Today's Misstep- Driving over hills, a tire came at us Travel Advice: What exercises should I do when I travel?   FAQ: What do you wish you knew before booking your flight?   Response: A few more questions you can ask someone before you plan your trip are:  Did you experience any frustrations related to the destination or the actual traveling? If so, what should people be aware of to avoid those frustrations, hopefully? What websites or services were the most helpful for planning/booking your trip? What advice would you give someone going there for the first time? What was the most enjoyable or relaxing part of your trip?   Today's destination: Chickamauga National Park Part 2 of the Chattanooga series It's officially called Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park near Lookout Mountain. Use your National Park Pass for free entry. http://cityofchickamauga.org/ When I first visited Point Park, I explored this area on the border of Georgia and Tennessee for about an hour. It's across from the visitor center and was built by the Army Corps of Engineers.  You can see artillery from the Confederate fighting. The Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863, marked the end of a Union offensive in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia called the Chickamauga Campaign. The battle was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. It involved the second-highest number of casualties in the war, following the Battle of Gettysburg. It was the first major battle of the war in Georgia. The battle was fought between the Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg, and was named for Chickamauga Creek, which meanders near the battle area in northwest Georgia (and ultimately flows into the Tennessee River about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northeast of downtown Chattanooga) There is also a monument to peace, The New York Peace Monument, symbolizing reunification and reconciliation.    http://cityofchickamauga.org/about-history-chickamaugabattlefield.asp Look for marble and pink granite materials. Visit the museum at Ochs Memorial Observatory for views of the Chattanooga area from the terrace. You can continue hiking the trails to other scenic views from Lookout Mountain. I first visited this area on a bus trip with my high school friends in the 1970s, and this was my first visit to return.  I drove the two hours from Atlanta through some small towns and highways and finally to some neighborhoods and scenic drives. When you get to the neighborhood, you will drive on windy roads that take your breath away.  This is a Step 1 or Step 2 destination and easy to explore independently. There is also a cute Visitor Center with restrooms and a small museum. The awe-inspiring view from Lookout Mountain Battlefield over Point Park shows a bird' s-eye view of the Tennessee River and how it bends, a bit like a foot at the ankle. You see the city of Chattanooga from above when you go around the bend. You can even see the three bridges that cross the river to the town. The battlefield here was memorable, and you can follow the signs for the Chickamauga Battlefield Tour. Or you can just enjoy walking the grounds around the peace monument and listening to the birds chirping. It's an excellent way to enjoy your day in Georgia or Tennessee.   http://cityofchickamauga.org/about-history-trainmuseum.asp Today's Misstep- Driving on the road over hills, a tire came rolling at us and hit our car. You're generally safe from tires in a car, but this tire stopped us. We hit the tire and could not drive any further. We got a tow truck to bring the car home, about 200 miles away. It was an expensive tow, and I hope you don't have that experience.  Today's Travel Advice- What exercises should I do when I travel? Try to stay as active as you are when home, which means you should try to maintain the same levels of activities, even if you are on the road a lot. You may need to take frequent breaks in your drive to stretch, walk a bit, and even do more intensive exercise. Stretch every two hours on a plane or train. I try to find a pool where I can swim anytime I travel. I am a member of the YMCA, where I can go anytime. There are more than 2700 YMCAs in the USA and also in 120 countries around the world. That's how we both can keep our exercise routines when we travel.    Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

Don't Spill the Popcorn!

WELCOME BACK YOU POPCORN POACHING POTHEADS! It's been quite some time since you've heard from us and boy have we missed you all very much. Life has been crazy busy for the both of us and it's been tough to make time to record and edit an episode in full. Today's special return of Don't Spill the Popcorn! was recorded back in August and was only NOW just finished. Be sure to keep that in mind when you realize some references don't feel too recent. LOL This episode specifically is packed with an extra punch because co-host DILLON HOFFMAN worked on this show and played a critical role in making sure this film looked the best it could possibly look and has some fun behind the scenes stories. This episode is also extra special because we decided to get a good buzz on while we recorded so we're EXTRA goofy. We will be posting behind the scenes photos to our Instagram and Facebook so make sure you check us out and follow us if you want all of the best DSTP updates! There's another episode already recorded that will be on the way soon. (Also a good reason to follow us because you'll find out what it is. ;P ) THANK YOU AND LOVE YOU ALL! and remember DONT...... Good Morning it's Saturday June 26th, and this is The Wenatchee World's newest podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.    Today - Thirty-one wineries, breweries, cider houses, agritourism farms and farmers markets in Chelan and Douglas counties received a combined half a million dollars in pandemic relief grants this month from the state Department of Agriculture.   Now our feature story...   Thirty-one wineries, breweries, cider houses, agritourism farms and farmers markets in Chelan and Douglas counties received a combined half a million dollars in pandemic relief grants this month from the state Department of Agriculture.   The grants range from $17,000 each for the craft beverage producers to $15,000 for agritourism businesses and $10,000 for farmers markets.   The COVID-19 Relief and Recovery grants, funded through a partnership between WSDA and the state Department of Commerce, were part of $14 million distributed to 839 businesses across the state.    The application period for the grants ran April 9th through April 26th.   The program targeted four specific agriculture-related sectors that had been left out of earlier relief programs — craft beverages, agritourism farms, farmers markets and shellfish growers.   WSDA Director Derek Sandison said that these grants will boost the Washington state agricultural industry, helping prevent business closures and supporting the health and diversity of Washington state's overall economy.    He noted that our economy needs the businesses in these four sectors to recover from the pandemic for the health of our economy as a whole.   So here's the local breakout: Chelan County received 26 grants, in total $418,000.   The funds went to 19 craft beverage producers, 6 agritourism farms, and 2 farmers markets   Douglas County received 5 grants totalling  $83,000. Those funds went to 4 craft beverage producers, and 1 agritourism farm.    Grant County received 10 grants, totalling $167,000. Those funds went to 6 craft beverage producers, 2 agritourism farms, and 1 farmers market.   And finally, Okanogan County received 9 grants, $178,000 in total. The money went to 4 craft beverage producers, 1 agritourism farm, 4 farmers markets.   To read more on this story visit us at wenatcheeworld.com   Next,    The Fourth of July Fireworks Show at Walla Walla Point Park has passed its first local COVID-19 evaluation and is good to go according to the Wenatchee Valley 4th's Facebook page.   Large, outdoor events expected to draw more than 1,000 participants will still be evaluated based on COVID-19 metrics and local healthcare partners. Evaluations take place at 10 and five days before the event.   So organizers of the Fourth of July Fireworks Show at Walla Walla Point Park will be waiting as their first local COVID-19 metric evaluation approaches this Friday.   These metrics would be evaluated at 10 days and then five days before any large, outdoor events, according to the health district.   Last year, Walla Walla Point Park was closed to the public for the Fourth of July fireworks show, and people were encouraged to watch the yearly fireworks show from their cars or elsewhere.   But if everything goes smoothly at the upcoming evaluations, people will be able to go to the park this year to enjoy the event's fireworks, beer garden, music and food vendors.   You can find the latest updates on the event at wenatcheevalleyfourth.com.   Did you know that the Rocky Reach Dam is a hydroelectric dam operated by Chelan County Public Utility District which began operation in 1956? Located 7 miles upstream of Wenatchee, the project provides energy for more than 7 million people throughout the Pacific Northwest. They've been nationally recognized for their efforts to protect the local environment including a first-of-its-kind juvenile fish bypass system to help young salmon and steelhead find their way to the ocean. Believe it or not, water flows through their turbines at a rate of up to 145 thousand gallons per second!   Thanks for listening. On this week’s episode I have April Yanko on the Zoom talking acting, writing and staying out of the sun even while living in LA. We talk about Pittsburgh, self-promotion for actors, why somebody would move to Los Angeles, training, a little about “Method” and what famous people are from Pittsburgh like Michael Keaton, Quinton Tarantino, Gene Kelly and Christina Aguilera. From her website Aprilyanko.com: Actor | Writer | Overall Weirdo  I am an actor and writer living in Los Angeles. I moved here recently from Pittsburgh, where the bulk of my experience has taken place, so I have many stories on what indie film production is like (both from an actor's pov and from that of a producer, writer, and director). I made my TV debut on the Reelz Channel playing serial killer Karla Homolka, where I was flown to Dallas to shoot for four days. I've been a brand ambassador for different companies in Pittsburgh and LA, working many live events. Also, a birthday party princess, working mostly as Rapunzel and Anna. Commercial shoots, model shoots, voice over gigs, I've done a LOT of different jobs within the facet of acting. And, of course, I've gathered many stories along the way. I am a lover of cats and eater of pasta. I share internet things by the name Post March. "Post" means after, so my name is "after March," which should answer the question, "Is this a Post Malone reference?" (rather than focus on my videos, I want viewers to think about, understand, and then appreciate my riddle username). Here are some super fun facts about me, the one with the face: - I went to the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center where I learned how to create in all aspects of theater AND how to do it while concussed. - My first guest star was on a show called, "Murder Made Me Famous," where I played serial killer and evil Canadian Karla Homolka, part of the Ken and Barbie Killers. I got this role through self-pitching and relationship-nurturing. Because I'm a bad ass. It's also one of the best filming experiences I've ever had. - If you know Pennsylvania, I am from Johnstown, land of floods. If you don't, I am from Pittsburgh, land of potholes. - Since graduating Point Park, I've been in over 70 student films and over 30 other projects (I want to say the opposite of student film is "adult films" but that doesn't seem right in this context). - I narrate tutorials for VEXcode Robotics so maybe I've explained to your kid how to update the firmware of their V5 Brain. - My first self-written/directed/produced short film, "this is a garden," is currently on the festival circuit and recently won "Best Cast" at the Alternative Film Fest in Vancouver (and I'm one of two actors in it so that's pretty good). - My second short film, "Butt Stuff," is currently in post. It's about a sentient sex butt that is jealous of its owner's relationship with another human. - I make random goofy videos that I share online under various forms of "Post March," which you can find by following my social links in my header. -  My first feature with a starring role, "Force to Fear," forced me to learn a lot of fight choreography and how to properly condition my hair after the 80s style tried to fry it off of my head. - I just finished a pitching TV course where I learned how to better share my awesome adult cartoon, "Craig and Sophie." - During college I created a Feminist Collective, served two years in Residence Life, and worked at the library as a professional shusher. - Sure I have a BA in Acting; but more importantly, I have one in PR and Advertising. Just marvel at this website my degree taught me how to make. - My favorite voice actor is Jodi Benson and I think if I met her I would accidentally pee myself (much like her most famous character, Ariel, did when she turned into a human). Some other random tidbits: - I love all pastas equally. - I have a black cat named Artie who is my son. - I am incredibly fond of Futurama and the Powerpuff Girls. - All of my Neopets are alive and well. Even though he will turn 29 this summer, Antonio Carrillo is going to come back to Point Park for more season of college baseball in 2021. An opportunity to play that one final year is something that he has been wanting to do for nearly a decade. He was drafted out of high school in the 2009 MLB Draft but elected to attend San Diego State and play for MLB HOFer Tony Gwynn. However his college career didn't go as planned and he stopped playing after his sophomore season. After spending his Sundays playing in recreation leagues he decided he wanted to give it one more go even though he was now married with a pair of young children. It is a big puzzle to fit everything in as he works evenings in an Amazon warehouse and being an Uber driver to support his family while they support his dream of playing college baseball.
