The first half of the decade is now behind us, so let's look back at the best films that came out from 2020-2024. We sent out a poll to critics and made a list of the 50 best films of the decade so far. Last week on Part 1, we revealed picks 50-26. Now here is Part 2 where we count down picks 25 through number 1! Huge thank you to the following people for sending in voicemails on behalf of films that made the list: Calum Macnab, Bryan Loomis, Brodie Cotnam, Daniel Grant, Matthew Simpson, Alex Watson, Martyn Strange, Matt Schmidt, Aria, Nathan Sizemore, Todd Pengelly, John Richards, Sean Wilson, Bil Antoniou, Jeff Bulmer, Harper Thompson, Rachel Ho and Nate Storring. A year ago, John Richards the head of the Atheist UK approached me about the idea of celebrating Christopher Hitchens with a Hitchmas event, near Christmas, and on or about the anniversary of Christopher's death, on Dec 15, 2011. I realized that to do it right would require time and organization, and the proper panelists. I was thrilled that Christopher's friends and mine, Stephen Fry, Richard Dawkins, and Douglas Murray agreed to be part of the event, and that the HowTo Academy, which organizes wonderful events in London, several of which I had done before, agreed to coordinate the logistics with The Origins Project Foundation. A year later, the sold-out event happened, and we decided in advance to record it appropriately, with 5 cameras, and to have Gus and Luke Holwerda, who directed and filmed The Unbelievers, and with whom I began The Origins Podcast, edit the final product. As a special Holiday gift, we are making the advert free video version available to both paid and free subscribers here on Critical Mass. This post has the audio version for those who prefer that. If you want to watch the video, open the other Critical Mass post we are releasing this morning. Our YouTube channel will also host the video, and I encourage you to subscribe to that channel as well if you wish. No matter how you watch it, or listen to it (we will make the audio available on iTunes etc), we hope you find this set of reminiscences and the ensuing discussion a wonderful reminder of a remarkable man, and that it inspires you as much as Christopher inspired us. Happy Holidays to you all. Lawrence M. Krauss Get full access to Critical Mass at lawrencekrauss.substack.com/subscribe

John Richards was shortlisted for the Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Award in 2021 and the Glendower Award for an Emerging Queensland Writer in August 2022. The Gorgon Flower is his first published work of fiction. The Gorgon Flower is a wonderful collection of dark and macabre stories. I've always thought of short story collections like albums or mixed lolly bags. The best of them have something for everyone but you're probably still not going to share because you love it all. The range of ideas in The Gorgon Flower extends from the historic to the speculative. Each story challenges the reader with tilted perspectives and invites you in to discover the world in a new way. I'm not going to try and cover every tale in the book but I would like to give you a sense through the longest and perhaps darkest tale; the titular The Gorgon Flower. The Gorgon Flower In the mid nineteenth century Lord Tobias Henry Edmundson embarks on a quest to rediscover the enigmatic Gorgon Flower. The flower was first brought to European attention by Tobias' father, an eminent botanist. Since his youth Tobias has been plagued, some might say obsessed with the flower that he remembers as a carnivorous marvel that entranced those who saw it. His father's original find was destroyed in a fire that also took his father's life and now Tobias plans to pick up the trail This is a strange and dark story told in two parts; first through Tobias' field diaries and then through testimony from the ship's doctor.  Tobias' diary chronicles the long march into the jungle where the flower was last sighted. The expedition are met with horrific discoveries of missionaries left in some sort of decay that seems to pass over the indigenous inhabitants. The crew are alarmed, with many fearing it is only a matter on time before they are stricken by the horrible malady. The Gorgon Flower combines psychological thriller with body horror to create a kaleidoscopic spiral into Tobias' obsession.  Within the story the Gorgon Flower is both a siren and something of a post-colonial wrecking ball leveling the ambitions of those who would exploit the terrain. The prose is crafted just so to entice the reader to believe whilst sowing seeds of doubt (forgive the botanical reference). This is fun, intellectual horror at its best. And that's just one part of the collection!

Overcoming Dark Times: John Richards Shares Strategies for Mental Resilience and Growth

The Essential 11

At some point in life, we will experience a mental breakdown due to the challenges and adversities we are going through. Sadly, many people nowadays succumb to this dark energy and fall from it, suffering immensely. So how can we overcome this? Experiencing depression, you might want to run away, but instead, you need to fight back with those around you to push out this obstacle. John Richards shares his journey as a Navy SEAL and what he learned from it. Humans do different things, but we have one thing in common: we can all be mentally down and exhausted. In order to overcome this, we need to fight back and not run away. Doing so will help you overcome the dark energy and be stronger the next time it comes. Tune in as they chat about health, life, business, and more! Quotes: “When you feel that dark feeling roll in, lean into a dude and fight back, don't let it just sit there bound on you day after day. Throw some punches and show who's who. All that dark energy Go tell it to go away.” – John Richards “My no-fail mission right now is furthering the legacy of Richard's last name. How do I leave my last name better than I found it before I got it.” – John Richards “Learn how to get out in front of your problem. But to do that, you must sit down, plan, and think about where you're in life. And what it is you're trying to grow ” – John Richards Takeaways: When you are feeling down or depressed, don't run from it or be idle. Lean into your friends or family and fight back. Find out what you're passionate about, learn how to be great at it, have a vision, and stay proactive. Applying these things will make your life better. Careful thinking and planning are necessary to get out of your problems. Know where you are in your life and what your visions are. Those who move without a plan are just walking in a direction without a destination. Conclusion: It is normal to feel sad, exhausted and depressed when going through many hardships. But what you need to do to control that dark energy and force them away is to learn to face it. Don't let it ruin you inside; jump into action and show who you are. https://apogeestrong.comhttps://apogeewoman.com/https://apogeestrongdads.comhttps://apogeestrongfoundation.org

Lo! Peninsula - Super Glue (Cover) from the 2023 self-released album The Resurrection Of The Princess Of Woe And Her Vampire Hound Posse. Lo! Peninsula is a shoegaze/dreampop trio from Imphal, India that first caught the ears of KEXP's John Richards and his producer Owen Murphy back in 2018 with their debut full-length AKA Lo Peninsula. Murphy interviewed the band that year about making music in a conflict-torn area and their DIY recording process. Since then, they've only released less than a handful of singles but recently returned with “Super Glue.” The song is a cover of Indian noise-rockers Hoirong's 2013 original and appears on a covers album made in celebration of the tenth anniversary of Hoirong's debut album The Reincarnation of The Princess of Woe and Her Vampire Hound Posse. Titled The Resurrection of The Princess of Woe and Her Vampire Hound Posse, the album sees contributions from Indian bands like Pacifist, Disco Puppet, Mr. INDIA, and Audrey. Hoirong's version of “Super Glue” is a lo-fi affair with screeching warbles and fuzzed-out guitars while frontman Kamal Singh melodramatically sings, “Slowly comes an asshole and he looks so good /Slowly you become my menstruation /Funny how you try to be the super glue.” The original is so good that it's a nerve-wracking undertaking to cover. Instead of trying to mimic, Lo! Peninsula wraps the song in a sheeny haze, taking “Super Glue” to new heights. Watch the video for Lo! Peninsula's 2021 single “Kintsugi” and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
